What does NFL HoF Ty Law make of the Christian Gonzalez situation? What would Ty Law do if he were in Gonzo/Gonzo's agent's position?
Law: "You are also setting up for the guy's (market) behind you"
Transcript
00:01It doesn't stop the people here at the Beachcomber, including our next guest, the Hall of Famer, Ty Law.
00:07Good morning.
00:09Feels good. Feels good to be back.
00:12Good time last night.
00:13Oh, yeah. We had a great time last night, man.
00:15Plenty of drinks going around.
00:17You know, shout out to Chavez, man.
00:20Bill Pyres, man. He hooked it up for us, man.
00:22It was a great time, man.
00:23It was awesome.
00:24High expectations for this Patriots team now that you were able to get A.J. Brown.
00:30Big time expectations, man.
00:31I mean, he's one of those guys that's a difference maker.
00:36You get a lot of guys that can catch the ball, but he's one of those guys that I really
00:39believe is a true difference maker,
00:41and he's going to make Drake May that much more explosive, especially when it comes to the deep ball,
00:48because his accuracy and A.J. Brown, he can stretch the field, and when he gets it in his hands,
00:53he can make something happen.
00:54But I want to throw something out there, because I would like to see this.
00:57Because I think that, along with A.J. Brown coming, if he's not gone, you need to bring Stephon Diggs
01:05on back, man.
01:06I really believe that.
01:07All right.
01:08I think they would be that strong, yes.
01:09So I'm just throwing it out there.
01:11Okay.
01:11What do you think he would be willing to play for?
01:14What was his salary last year?
01:16$21 million.
01:17He ain't going to play for that.
01:18I mean, he ain't going to get that one.
01:19But I would say maybe half of that $13 million.
01:23I like that.
01:24I mean, because that's where the market is at nowadays.
01:26I know it seems like an astronomical number, even for when we play Wiggy.
01:32You know, that's like a hell of a lot more than I got paid.
01:36I was starting.
01:37I was like, God damn.
01:39But I really think that he will still be a huge asset to the team.
01:42And I don't think he was a distraction as much people talk about, you know, I don't call it drama
01:49that came with him.
01:50Hell, that damn Cardi B coming to the games.
01:53You know what I mean?
01:53It's like it's bringing a little bit more attention to it.
01:56You know what I mean?
01:56But he is a good player.
01:58And I think he was a good teammate for the guys riding.
02:00So I'd like to see him back.
02:01Why would you guess he hasn't signed somewhere yet?
02:04That is, I don't know.
02:05I would think it's a money thing because, I mean, the money dries up.
02:09You know, you've got a salary cap.
02:11It is what it is.
02:12So is he willing to take that much less than what he would typically make?
02:17He was a 1,000-yard receiver.
02:19Look at the 1,000-yard receiver salaries there.
02:21You know, he probably wants to fit somewhere in there.
02:24But when there's no money left, you know, it's hard.
02:26So you've got to wait to see if someone gets injured or something like that.
02:29And when you're a veteran, who wants to go to training camp anyway?
02:32Amen.
02:33I know when I was a veteran, hey, if I could avoid training camp until the last week or so,
02:37damn it, I'm going to avoid it until the last week or so.
02:40Ty, you played in the NFL, and you played at the highest level possible,
02:45and you was considered one of the best in the league.
02:48Like, if you're Christian Gonzalez's agent, right?
02:54You're saying that like he's not.
02:56No, no, no.
02:57And Trent McDuffie set the market four years.
03:00I think it was $124,000 or $125,000 with $100 million guaranteed.
03:06What are you going to Robert Kraft and saying,
03:10here's how much I want Christian Gonzalez to make?
03:14I would say, you know, that's where we got to start.
03:17If you start anything less than that, it's not a conversation.
03:20You know what I mean?
03:21Because that's just the way it is.
03:22And you got to think, guys, it's not just what you want personally,
03:27but you're also setting up for the guys behind you.
03:30Right.
03:30It is a fraternity.
03:31You know what I mean?
03:32So when I got my contract, you think that, you know, Champ Bailey,
03:36and I wasn't talking to them, they're like, man, you got to go get it, man.
03:38You got to go get it.
03:39When Deion did his, hey, that was – it was my time next.
03:44The same thing with Roy Wilson.
03:45We all talk amongst each other, and you don't want to be that guy
03:48to mess up the market.
03:49If anything, you want to be the one to change the market.
03:51And I think, you know, by Christian Gonzalez playing the way he has been playing,
03:55he deserves everything and more, you know, whatever he gets.
04:00You know what I mean?
04:00Because I think Patrick Sertain is still considered the number one corner.
04:04Christian Gonzalez is a very close second, and he's younger.
04:09So if – and it's always about the youth.
04:12If Patrick Sertain considered the number one guy, somebody else set the market
04:17by getting $100 million guaranteed, it's his turn in line.
04:21So if he got 100, damn it, 101 is minimum that we're talking about.
04:26Right.
04:26Now, if he want to go 104, 105, that's one thing.
04:30But he is not only holding himself for his family and himself,
04:34but he's also being held accountable by the other guys behind him
04:37because, damn it, we want a contract too, man.
04:39So go and set the bar as high as you can.
04:42You negotiated with the Patriots.
04:43Yes.
04:44Obviously, Bill Belichick's not there.
04:46Did they try and use – maybe Brady wasn't quite Brady at that point.
04:50Like, the fact that guys had taken less to stay against you?
04:55Oh, yeah.
04:56Oh, hell yeah.
04:56They're going to do that.
04:57I mean, think about it.
04:58I mean, absolutely.
04:59And I've always taken the approach that Brady, I'm expendable.
05:04You're going to fire my ass.
05:05You're not firing Tom Brady.
05:07So when everybody talking about Tom tooks less, and they will try you like that,
05:11it's like, yeah, that's Tom Brady.
05:13I mean, he has a whole lot longer rope than the rest of us have.
05:17You know what I mean?
05:17So we got to get what we can while we can.
05:20And that's just the name of the – that's just the name of the game.
05:22But they will absolutely try that.
05:23And then when you're talking about the best player on the team, you know,
05:28taking less, you know, that is – I mean, from the optics from you guys,
05:33like, well, Tom did it.
05:34You can do it.
05:35Tom ain't getting fired, y'all.
05:37Shit, Tom ain't getting fired.
05:39And what was it like – because you negotiated with the Jets and with the Chiefs.
05:43How was it different with the Craps versus those organizations?
05:45Were they more ruthless?
05:47No, I mean, it's always, you know, the same.
05:50It's, okay, what is demand, the supply and demand?
05:52I think, you know, a lot of times with your home team, you know,
05:55they play on the heartstrings.
05:57And, you know, and because of, you know, the success and the championships
06:01and you got guys that will – you know, everybody points out
06:04that Tom took less money.
06:07You know, Tom could have got more.
06:08But Tom, to his credit, he was looking at, you know, winning.
06:11He's going to make, you know, more winning, being the greatest of all time.
06:16You know what I mean?
06:16He was able to do that.
06:17And plus, you know, he's making a bunch of goddamn money off the field too.
06:22Did it bother you if it took less?
06:23I said, man, hey, I drink Dunkin' Donuts every day.
06:25They ain't never called me.
06:27So I'm going to put it out there.
06:28I said, yeah, they ain't never called me.
06:29I ain't never played a game without drinking Dunkin' Donuts,
06:32and I ain't got to call yet.
06:33But see, my point is that they're going to make – he's going to continue to make money.
06:37Everybody didn't have that opportunity.
06:38You know that.
06:39We had to get what we can on our contract.
06:41If another opportunity came, you know, great.
06:43We looked at him sideways, though, like, Tom, what is you doing?
06:46Oh, yeah.
06:47Now, like you said, it's the brotherhood, and it's about setting the market.
06:51Right.
06:51And now we're like, oh, damn, if Tom's taking less, they're going to, like you said –
06:56No, they expect everybody –
06:57And that's not a good look amongst us.
06:59We're like, man, go get that money.
07:00Yeah, exactly.
07:01But, again, when you're the quarterback, the most important, you know, position on the field,
07:06you can play with it, you know, a little bit.
07:09They're going to always come back to you, and you can restructure your contract.
07:12You can do this.
07:13And, of course, you know, it's going to look favorable because, you know, you're the best player.
07:18But the rest of us, we don't always have that.
07:21You know what I mean?
07:21So that's the difference, and then we get kind of crucified for it a little bit.
07:25Team that got to the Super Bowl last year, what's your expectation this year adding A.J. Brown?
07:32I expect the same thing.
07:34If, one, you've got to stay healthy.
07:35You know, guys, people don't talk about it enough because, I mean,
07:38injuries happen, but you have to stay healthy.
07:41You've got to start clicking at the right time.
07:43Like, you know, late October, November, that's when you're going to tell what type of team that you really have.
07:48But I think health is important.
07:50But A.J. Brown coming into the fold is going to be big.
07:54But I still say they're going to need somebody else like a Stephon Diggs to make the whole thing whole.
08:00You know what I mean?
08:01Because he's going to move the change.
08:03A.J. Brown, he's going to get you that touchdown.
08:06He's going to be that big, and he's going to force the double teams.
08:09You need a guy like Stephon Diggs that is going to win one-on-one, and he's going to move
08:13the chain on third downs.
08:14And I think, man, you've got to get that guy back if he can come back for a reasonable price.
08:18Going back to Gonzalez, from the outside, it looks like both sides are trying to stay very respectful right now,
08:24clearly in negotiations.
08:26At what point this summer training camp, preseason, do you, from your experience, look at it and say, everybody should
08:35be wearing now?
08:36It's gotten to a point where it does not look like it's good.
08:39Well, if you go into the season, you know, with a guy like that, and then, plus, you drafted him
08:45here.
08:45It is a little bit different when it's your own.
08:49You know what I mean?
08:49You want to be able to take care of those guys because you're also sending a message to the rest
08:52of the league,
08:53or if you get drafted by this team, they're not going to take care of their own.
08:56So I think they're going to get it done.
08:58It is a salary cap.
08:59You know, you did bring in A.J. Brown, an outsider.
09:03Basically, you've got to pay him, you know, this.
09:05He's a part of, you know, the Patriots now.
09:06But, you know, again, he comes with a huge salary.
09:10So I think it's just some numbers manipulation that have to go on to make everybody happy.
09:15But I think if you don't see him in training camp, when the real bullets start to fly, that's when
09:20it's time to worry.
09:21So, like, pads on, he's not out there, we're going to start going, what is going on here?
09:25Or if his pad's on and he's still in sweats and shorts and not really participating, even though he's there.
09:32And I think that's the tactic, you know, that people do.
09:35Now, look, hey, I'm here, but I'm not playing.
09:37The tactic when I was playing is, hell, I'm not coming at all.
09:40You know what I mean?
09:41If they change the rules, so now you can't get the money back that you held out with.
09:45So that's why guys are coming because of the new CBA.
09:47If you were Christian Gonzalez, would you go to training camp?
09:51I mean, probably not.
09:52Would you be on the field in training camp without the CBA?
09:55Hell no.
09:55Hell no.
09:56No.
09:56No.
09:57No.
09:57And it was different.
09:58When I played is in training camp, guys, I don't know what the rule is now, but it was you
10:04can only get fined.
10:05Because everybody get paid the same thing from Tom Brady down to the other guy in training camp.
10:10You know, you can only get fined $5,000 a day, you know, for that.
10:14So guess what?
10:16I ain't coming for $5,000 a day.
10:18That's the only thing that you can fine me for.
10:20So, you know, hey.
10:23I'll be back for that salary, though.
10:25What if you were a second-round pick?
10:28Would you be a minicamp?
10:30A second-round pick in minicamp?
10:32Gabe Ackes.
10:32No, because if you're a second-round, you're talking about if you're up like Christian Gonzalez?
10:37No, no, no.
10:38This Gabe Ackes, who was just drafted in the second round, he's not participating right now.
10:43There's speculation.
10:43Is it because he wants his contract fully guaranteed before he works out with it?
10:48That's what they're doing now, though.
10:49He need to sit his ass down.
10:51You ain't got no leverage, bro.
10:53You're not a Christian guy.
10:55Come on, Wiggy.
10:55You can't do that in the second round.
10:57He tried to interject.
10:58He tried to interject to get you on his side.
11:00No, no, no.
11:01I'm not trying to interject.
11:01Here's the difference, though.
11:03Here's the difference.
11:04What Mago didn't explain to you.
11:06Oh, sorry.
11:07Is the new draft picks now in the second round.
11:10Why no?
11:10They're asking and getting their contract.
11:13No, no.
11:14Fully guaranteed.
11:15Some are.
11:15That's what I said.
11:16He wants his contract to be.
11:17Fully guaranteed.
11:18What did she say?
11:19Okay, but I'm saying, like.
11:20I didn't say it right.
11:21Who started that precedent?
11:23As far as the second round.
11:25It was Jaden.
11:26I want to say Jaden Higgins from Houston, the Texans, last year.
11:29He basically said, I'm holding out.
11:32And they've guaranteed his contract.
11:34And so now there's a lot of second rounders who get their contract fully guaranteed.
11:39That's, you know.
11:39And that's an organizational type of decision from the ownership.
11:44But I don't think that as a second round pick to have a fully guaranteed contract.
11:50Like, if you can get it, by all means, ask for it.
11:52But this is the Patriots.
11:55Show us what you got.
11:56Show us what you got.
11:57And then, you know, you talk that.
11:58But I can't see that happening.
12:00It is awesome to see you.
12:02Thank you, man.
12:02Thanks for being here.
12:04You're on the back.
12:04We're here for the great Ty Long.
