00:41What you saw was a player who was scared, and Jacksonville did not respect him

00:51He looks like that on Sunday, this is it.

01:09When he talks like that, people take it the wrong way.
01:12I think people are looking for things that take the wrong way anyway.
01:15But when he goes even further, and he says our expectations are a little bit too high,
01:22well, again, that seemed to send people right up the wall.

01:27What did it mean that Todd stuck with you after a rough week one,
01:31and was there any doubt in your mind that you were going to be the starter of this year?
01:34No, I mean, I didn't hear anything, so I didn't hear anything about that.
01:40My bar is low for him.
01:42When he mentions the media in these clips and talks about 400 yards
01:47and five touchdowns and things like that, like he's going to mention here.
01:51No, I think personally, I think all that is for the media.
01:55I mean, I think the media has this expectation that I'm supposed to throw 400 yards
01:59and five touchdowns every week.
02:01So until that happens, I guess it's going to be the same situation.
02:04So, again, my job is to make sure I'm operating well so we can try to get a win
02:09and keep moving forward from that.
02:12I'm a member of the media.
02:13I'd like you to throw for 200 yards and a couple of touchdowns and no interceptions.
02:16That's no turnovers.
02:17That's what I'd like.
02:18Well, what's crazy is I remember him having games like that in Houston,
02:21and I thought he was going to be able to do things like that.
02:23And now we're so far removed from that that I'm just like,
02:27can he be a game manager for most of a game?
02:31Is that possible?
02:33And you look at how he played in game one, and you're like, well, it's hard to believe.
02:36It's hard to even – hard to try to extract that from whatever the game plan is.
02:43Can you just get him to not make those horrific mistakes?

02:51I think that the criticism's in his head.
02:53I think he's broken.
02:55And I don't think I'm hearing much pushback on that.

03:03but was Baker Mayfield satisfied with his performance?

03:07In week one, he wasn't.
03:08You're talking about the opener against Bengals.
03:09Yeah, he wasn't.
03:09He put the ball on the ground three times.
03:11And somebody I know very well who works in media
03:15and would be a voice that people pay attention to
03:18had said they didn't see the game.
03:20They were watching the Browns.
03:21They did not see what had transpired.
03:22He goes, well, Baker didn't look bad.
03:23I go, no, no, no.
03:24Baker put the ball on the ground three times.
03:25He single-handedly lost in the game.
03:27Yeah, he blames himself for that.
03:29Oh, didn't know.
03:30So when you look at the numbers, you go, well, a stat line isn't that bad.
03:34This is why you've got to watch the games.
03:35This is why you've got to get into the minutia of it a little bit.
03:38Because our former quarterback is holding himself to a higher standard.
03:41Our current quarterback is blaming the media, blaming the fans,
03:44blaming everybody else, it seems, for the problems.
03:48And yes, I know I'm probably being overboard and being too hard.
03:51I don't care anymore.
03:52Well, yeah, that's the thing.
03:53Like, if it were anybody else and we didn't have this body of work,
03:57I would have listed off a bunch of excuses that I would only list for probably
04:02week one, maybe week two of the season, which is, all right, new head coach,
04:07new terminology, completely revamped offensive line, zero running game,
04:13they had none to speak of, and then young wide receivers.
04:16And you're going up against a Jacksonville team that has real expectations,
04:20that won, what, 13 games last year.
04:22Like, I would have all these excuses ready to go if it were anybody else.
04:27And by the way, I would have given those excuses for Shador.
04:30I know people don't believe that.
04:32I would have said, guys, it's his eighth game as a pro.
04:35But with Deshaun, nobody is stepping up willing to give a benefit of the doubt.
04:40And I could say, well, look at the passing chart for Patrick Mahomes in his win over Denver.
04:46It was just as bad.
04:47It was just as close to the line of scrimmage.
04:49Bo Nix, Bo Nix, same thing.
04:52Somebody put up a funny graphic in their living room with a Bo Nix flathead and said,
04:58all right, here's the couch, and here is the TV.
05:01And that depth of target, four and a half yards, was exactly what it was in the opener.
05:05But nobody's willing to do that for Deshaun Watson.
05:08I'm not trying to not pay attention to what you're saying.
05:10I think it goes back into it, but I couldn't help but think.
05:12I go, this is a powder keg every single week.
05:15Like, he has to perform unreasonably well on Sunday.
05:19And I just don't think he's capable of it.
05:21Like, there have been a couple of people who've gotten in our mentions and sent us a few emails.
05:25And like, this is ridiculous of people.
05:27He's still a quarterback for the Browns.
05:29I hope he throws for 405 touchdowns despite you guys.
05:33I go, yeah, you might as well wish for world peace, too, while you're at it.
05:36Because neither are capable.

05:39Like, if we're wishing upon stars here, you might as well really go for the gusto
05:43instead of just Deshaun Watson in a week two game.
05:45Well, I even realized that I felt foolish telling you either on the phone
05:50or maybe I did it on the air.

05:52That, all right, the deep ball was one thing.
05:55Talk about four times today other than the radio.
05:56Yeah, the deep ball to Boston.
06:00And then that anticipation throw that I told you about in the second half to KC.
06:05And I'm like, look at what I'm doing.
06:06I'm sitting here pointing to two throws as if that's kind of expected in the NFL.
06:12You should be able to hit on a deep throw every game.
06:15You should be able to hit on an anticipation throw 20 yards down the field.
06:19Those are great throws.
06:20Guess what?
06:21It doesn't counterbalance all the other nonsense that started the game.
06:26And I hate to use your own words against you at times,
06:28but I know that that's the things you've attacked some of the fans of the other quarterback about.
06:32Is that I can't just sit there and go for three throws where it's like, hey,
06:36you know, they can all make those throws.
06:37Especially when the game's over.
06:38They can all throw bombs.
06:40Okay?
06:40This is the NFL.
06:41Everybody can now.
06:42Yeah.
06:42You've got to be able to diagnose.
06:43And I could take you down a weird rabbit hole about transfer portal and stuff like that.
06:46Deshaun's before all that stuff.

06:48So, he doesn't get the benefit of that.
06:50And he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt on anything with this fan base anymore.
06:52But what I point out is that he has to be – I think that this has got to be
06:57his last start
06:58because he's got to be unreasonably good.
07:00He'd have to completely do a turnaround from last week, which is probably unrealistic.

07:06It's a desperate Tampa Bay team.
07:08To throw the team on his shoulders.
07:10And I'm not saying win because I don't know what your defense is going to do.
07:13So, if they end up in a 34-31 shootout loss, well, I guess we'll have a different conversation on

07:19But I just don't believe he's capable of that.
07:21And if he's not capable of that and he just turns in a one touchdown, one pick, 175 yards,
07:30depth of target ain't that great, maybe took less sacks, I hope he would take less sacks,
07:34you have to have a serious conversation because, okay, fans might not boom as much.
07:40They're still going to boom when he takes the field.
07:42And then if he starts doing poorly, things are going to get really surly.
07:46And I have to bring it up, which seems to be ridiculous.
07:50But he brought it up.
07:52So, now I know that the fans are in his head.
07:55So, things off the field, in the stands, quite literally, affect his play on the field,
08:00which is affecting my football team if I put him out there.
08:03So, when I hear him say these things, I don't think it's even an arrogance.
08:07I think that he feels he needs to somehow play the victim here in his own way about the media
08:13and the fans and all these other things to try to rationalize his poor play in any way possible.
08:19I think he hates that he's a villain.
08:21I think he hates that he's reviled around the league and by his own fan base that's supposed to be
08:26his own fan base.
08:27All those things are true, though.
08:29And the only thing that's going to change it is good play.
08:31And I don't think he's capable of it, and neither does anybody out there.
08:34Well, and I think of all the bets you could make on this game of all the bets that you
08:40could make around the NFL,
08:41I think the surest bet is that this will be the last start for Deshaun Watson, and I'll be surprised.
08:46I will absolutely be surprised if he's starting week three at this point.
08:49And the only thing, like, I want this to end.
08:52I can't bring myself to root against him for this to end quickly.

10:50and looking like the weaker of the units of the two for the Browns.
10:54We're hoping that's a lie.
