00:06we're going to play a little Aditi Kinkabwala here from the morning show
00:09talking about the changes she's seen in Deshaun Watson.
00:13There's no question that Deshaun Watson handled the operation a bit more smoothly,
00:18that he is indeed the veteran, that he's seen a lot more defenses.
00:21I'll tell you, in all the years that I have been around Deshaun Watson,
00:25this is the best that he is mentally.
00:28The space that he is in right now, his focus, the way that he stayed in Cleveland all summer,
00:34went to work quietly every day, didn't ask anything of any of the staff in the building at all,
00:41was simply focused on living with his wife and working on football and his rehab.
00:46Just the conversations I have with him on the side, different.
00:49And I think that there's an acknowledgement that this is it.
00:52This is his opportunity.
00:53If he's going to still be a player in this league, be a starter,
00:57be a force of any kind, this is his chance right here.
01:00I'll also say the fact that he hasn't pulled away with the job,
01:02the fact that he hasn't done enough,
01:04means that Todd Munkin is enticed by the potential that Shadour is showing
01:09and the growth that Shadour has shown.

01:12So there's a few things here.
01:14But when we talked about Deshaun from the last practice we were at,
01:20where Deshaun said,
01:21it's in the best place I've ever been and all these things,
01:25it was the same energy, the same vibe with Deshaun.
01:29Well, it felt very phony.

01:31Which also, by the way, a lot of Saturday felt phony to me too.
01:33Well, what's interesting is in his,
01:36well, I think it was a third quarter interview with Aditi,
01:39I don't think there's anything phony about that smile.
01:41That looked like a man who felt like he had discovered light again.
01:44I can't take anything he does seriously though.
01:46So maybe that's where I have the hang up here.
01:48And if we're going to call him phony for what he did in the press conference leading up to it,
01:52then I'm also going to probably call him phony for,
01:54not probably, I'm going to call him phony for what happened on Saturday.
01:57I think he knows the battle he's got right now in trying to prove to Todd Munkin
02:01that he gets to be quarterback is showcasing that million dollar smile.
02:04It's flashing the pearly whites and letting Todd Munkin,
02:08oh yeah, this guy loves football again, doesn't he?
02:10He has a real desire.
02:11He's just doing what it takes.

02:14Smart of Deshaun to recognize that what people like Todd Munkin
02:18needed to see is a love for the game.
02:20That's what I need to see.
02:21Cause he definitely flashed it.
02:22I thought he almost went over the top with it though.
02:24Oh, I actually, I got to say, I think he's been faking it.

02:28He has been so guarded the last four years that whether it's smiles or like he,
02:34every, I feel like we've seen him fake smiles for the last four years.

02:41kind of look like he was pissed off and not wanting to be there.

02:44He hasn't faked it.
02:46But I think when he's tried to act like whatever previous iteration of Deshaun,
02:51it's never felt entirely real.
02:53He looked, he looked lighter on Saturday during the game.
02:56I think the idea that Todd Munkin spoke to it the way he did and was clearly
02:59looking to find out if Deshaun Watson was having fun again.
03:02I think he knew part of the test he had to pass was looking like he was having
03:05a great time.
03:06Now maybe he was actually having a great time and that's why the smile existed.
03:09But I would also say, if I think he's a great actor, I feel like he was acting in
03:13that spot because he knew that that's what Todd Munkin wanted to see.
03:16I don't think he is a great actor.
03:17And listen, I,
03:18I still am very out on the idea that the actual football part of this will come
03:23through.
03:24But last week when we talked about Deshaun,
03:26I had said,
03:27it's the same words,
03:29the same shrug,
03:30the same general hostage look that he has had for four years,
03:35five years now that I got,
03:38I have to say that I think Saturday was the one time that it hasn't felt like
03:41that.
03:42So I said,
03:43when I see something that looks different,
03:45I'll say it,
03:46but I can say it,
03:47that at least look different.
03:48Well,

03:49the football part of this can take him right back to football zombie again,
03:53but for one day and one day only,

03:58I just don't think it's an accident that he needed it.

04:02And then all of a sudden he delivered the smile that I haven't seen in years.

04:09She saw it where it felt like mentally Deshaun Watson was in a much better
04:12spot,

04:14the one thing that in the previous couple of years has been the biggest
04:16hurdle for him to have to overcome.
04:18We could say a lot about Deshaun,
04:19but mentally he's been cooked in a Browns uniform.
04:23And so like,
04:23if you're going to try to show people that you've evolved and you've grown,
04:26and this is a different Deshaun,
04:28that would be one of the ways that you would do it.
04:30The weirdest thing about this is,

04:32yesterday we talked about Deshaun and,

04:36not post-game comments,
04:37but in-game comments with Adidi and,
04:40and all that.
04:42And then Chris Sims,
04:43I saw him saying things that were very similar to what I said on the air

04:48which were positive.
04:49He looks lighter.
04:50He looks at all this stuff.
04:51And while he was saying it,
04:52I found myself getting annoyed.
04:53And I was like,
04:54with your own comments,
04:55but well,
04:56but by somebody else making the same points that I had.

05:02Basically that it's a new Deshaun.
