00:00I like the fact that the Browns are buyers at the trade deadline and not sellers.
00:04It tells a lot about where this season is going
00:07and how this team might be looking to add talent to make a deep, serious run.
00:13We talked earlier in this program about all the big-name,
00:17marquee-name players that have been traded so far this season.
00:21And you and I would love to see the Cleveland Browns make some moves.
00:25But we're in alignment, I believe,
00:27and the type of moves that we want to see.
00:30How we want Andrew Barry to go about it.
00:33Sure, we want players that can complement the guys on this team now
00:37and make an impact now for us to make a deep playoff run now.
00:42But I don't think either one of us want a stopgap player.
00:46If we got 11 picks, and let's say hypothetically he's willing to part with five of them,
00:51whether it be for future draft capital or players now,
00:55let's make sure those guys can help us more past just this year.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Yeah.
01:02And that's why I said or I teased,
01:05I think the Browns got to take a Guardians-like approach to the deadline.
01:09And what I mean by that is,
01:11I know this year the Guardians did a little bit more than they normally do,
01:14so that was good.
01:15We all agreed that was good.
01:16But I'm saying most years, when the trade deadline rolls around,
01:21the Guardians look and they say,
01:22all right, let's make a move that makes us better,
01:26but that also gives us a player that we can control in the future, right?
01:33It's trading for Brad Hand.
01:35It was trading for Andrew Miller.
01:36It's like they had extra years on their deals.
01:38Now that's different in the NFL.
01:40A lot of the guys that are getting traded in the NFL are on the last year of their deals
01:43anyway.
01:43But what I mean by taking a Guardians approach is,
01:47John Sable brought up earlier Khalil Mack.
01:50And while I understand the premise behind,
01:54yeah, the Browns could use some edge rusher help,
01:56they could use some defensive line depth,
01:58go get Khalil Mack on a one-year thing to see what he can bring to the table.
02:03See, I view Khalil Mack as the type of player you're getting
02:06if you believe you are a true Super Bowl contender.
02:1049ers.
02:11Bills, yeah, those type of teams.
02:12Like those teams, like those are the teams I'm looking at who should go get Khalil Mack.
02:16Khalil Mack's 35 years old.
02:18He's making like $8 million this year.
02:21He might not re-sign with you, but you're not worried about that.
02:25You're all in on how can I go,
02:28how can I make my team better to win the Super Bowl this year?
02:31The Browns are in a different spot.
02:34Yes, they're ahead of schedule with the way they're playing this year,
02:37I think by all accounts.
02:39And yes, like, you should try to maximize this season because we know in Cleveland,
02:44you just never know how the future can go.
02:48If you get the quarterback, if you don't get the quarterback,
02:50that can either set you back or, you know, boost you for years to come.
02:54And so that's still kind of a mystery.
02:57So I understand where it's like, at this point I'm not selling if I'm the Browns.
03:01I know there's been the Jerry Judy conversations.
03:04Guys, I'm not depleting a room that was your weakness last year on this roster,
03:09and now it's a strength.
03:10Why would I?
03:12Not only that, not to cut you off.
03:13Why would you do that?
03:14Not to cut you off.
03:15I want you to finish this point.
03:16But you got young wide receivers, and even for as good as they are
03:19and what their potential are,
03:21it's not like Denzel Boston had the greatest performance out there last week
03:24against Tennessee.
03:25Or if one of those guys gets hurt.
03:26You still need somebody that knows what the hell they're doing out there.
03:28I don't know that I'm big on the selling thing at this point.
03:31And if they had a different record, of course, it would be a different conversation.
03:33But they don't.
03:33I think at the very least you stay on Pat.
03:36But if I'm thinking about moves they can make to be buyers,
03:40man, I'm telling you, or I'm thinking about like Yaya Diaby in Tampa,
03:46who, yes, on the last year of his deal,
03:48but that's more of a Guardian-style move because it's his rookie deal.
03:51Like you trade for him, all of a sudden it's like, okay,
03:54he's on the last year of his rookie deal, but we can resign him.
03:57He's only in his mid-20s.
03:58He's got, you know, he can be part of our future plans.
04:02I think Jermaine Johnson is another one for the Chargers,
04:04who's a defensive end, pass rusher, that if you trade for him.
04:09I like Tully, too.
04:09Yeah, Tully's another one.
04:11Like those are all guys I think fit that billing of you trade for them.
04:16Yeah, and even if you have to give up a little bit more to get them
04:19because they're younger players, like you feel like they can be part of your future.
04:25Andrew Barry told us at the Combine that they weren't going to be signing certain guys
04:30or guys of a certain age because it just didn't make sense for them.
04:33Now I understood like when they were trying to bullshit the defensive end room
04:36and they were trying to sign Jadeveon Clowney,
04:38that made sense when it was only, hey, we're just paying this guy.
04:42When you're just paying the guy, fine.
04:44But when you've got to give up draft capital, like Earl,
04:46I know that we're not trying to talk draft right now,
04:48and I know we're not trying to think about like what these assets can become.
04:51And ultimately like day three picks are always the biggest crapshoot.
04:54So if you're giving up like a fourth-round pick for a guy, whatever.
04:57But I just think this team's in a position where it's like if you're adding to this roster,
05:02if you're going to give up some of that capital that might help you in April
05:05move up and down the board, if you're looking for a quarterback
05:07or whatever the quarterback situation looks like, you want to hold on to those things.
05:11I get it.
05:12I'm not giving up picks that are just for guys that are going to be like one-off players
05:16who are here this year.
05:17I'm giving up picks for guys who I think I have a chance of retaining
05:21and bringing back and being part of what you're building here.
05:23That's the approach that I'm taking to the trade deadline.
05:25Yeah, and I definitely agree with that approach.
05:27And I think another position that we need to look at and evaluate is
05:30the Browns desperately can use another tight end in that room, right?
05:34Yes, that's the second.
05:35You need another tight end that's a pass catching and a blocking tight end
05:39because, yeah, it was great to see Harold Fannin really get his money off last week,
05:43but it's been inconsistent on the part of Deshaun Watson as far as getting him involved.
05:48And then when you go back and you look at some of the film,
05:51Harold Fannin is being asked to do certain things because of the lack of depth
05:55that we have at that position.
05:57And maybe getting another tight end in here that's a pass catching tight end
06:01or somebody else that can help in a blocking game.
06:03You know who might work with that?
06:04Who?
06:05Mo Alley Cox.
06:06Mo Alley Cox.
06:07And here's the thing.
06:08That kind of goes against what I said.
06:10He's an older guy.
06:11He's 33.
06:11But his contract's like $2 million.
06:13Who's the guy that the Browns were trying to chase after in free agency
06:16that ended up signing with the Chargers that was with the Ravens last year?
06:21Oh, shoot.
06:22I know who you're talking about.
06:23Charlie Kohler.
06:23Yeah, that's it.
06:24Charlie Kohler.
06:24I knew exactly who it was.
06:25I can remember the name.
06:26That's another guy.
06:27It's not, again, not a household name, but it's a guy that's familiar with.
06:31That's a great pull.
06:32That's a great pull because he played with Todd.
06:34He's familiar with Todd.
06:35He's familiar with Warhop.
06:37He's familiar with Travis Schweitzer.
06:38And I think he can help out a lot in teaching people the system.
06:41And he signed a three-year deal.
06:42So, it's like you traded for him.
06:44He's here for the next couple years.
06:45You can build with him.
06:46You can build with him.
06:47I like that.
06:48I'm going to bring that up now.
06:50Him, the guys you mentioned, Diaby, Jim Rain, Johnson, if he becomes available.
06:55He is 6'6", 250 pounds, 27 years old.
06:59And so, like you said, if he's on the contract for the next two or three years,
07:02then in my opinion, that's a guy that –
07:05because you don't really know what you got in Royer.
07:07Like, the whole Joe Royer thing is like what it is to where we don't know what's going on
07:14and it's been so kept under wraps that I'm convinced he's probably not going to be a part of our
07:19plans.
07:19And so, if you can get a guy like in here that can help free Harold Fanning up
07:24but still kind of help you with the run blocking and everything else,
07:28I think that's a guy that you can trade for.
07:30And I don't think that would be – that would be another situation to where it's not costing you
07:34probably no more than a fourth-round pick.
07:36Yeah, I would agree.
07:37And I don't know what – I like that you brought up Kohler.
07:40I think the guys you brought up as defensive end options are there.
07:43But, yeah, that's – Kohler totally fits the idea where I'm going with here,
07:48which is, again, that Guardian's approach of is this a guy that's only helping us now
07:52or is it a guy that's helping us in the future?
07:53I do like Mo Ali Cox, though.
07:55Yeah.
07:55Dallas Goddard is another one that I like.
07:57That's maybe the one exception.
07:58Goddard might cost you a little bit more, but he's also in the last year of his deal
08:01and his contract's different.
08:02But, like, Mo Ali Cox is making, like, $2 million.
08:04So, it's like, I guess that one makes a little more sense.
08:06You're probably only giving up, like, you know, a late day three pick for a guy like that.
08:10But if the Colts are having a fire sale, maybe that helps.
08:13But, yeah, I'm with you.
08:15Like, my focus is on guys that you can have longer-term control with
08:20rather than, you know, just simply trading for guys to trade for guys
08:25and giving up draft capital that you might want come April.
08:28And I thought the comp was fair because you look at guys like Nathaniel Lowe
08:32and Joe Adele, you know, one thing that we've seen Steven Vogt do later in the season
08:37was stabilize their Guardians lineup.
08:39And as a fan, we know that those two guys are going to be a part of what we do
08:44for at least next season.
08:45And those are the type of moves that we're looking to see the Cleveland Browns make.
