22:08This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
22:17The angel here appealed to the senses of those who stood about the tomb to attest the truth
22:23of Christ's resurrection from the dead. The empty tomb at once proclaimed the actual resurrection
22:31of the Saviour. The resurrection is proclaimed to be a fact, firstly by the testimony of
22:40human witnesses. The disciples were men of property and had no worldly advantage to acquire from
22:47the publication of such a circumstance. Indeed, quite the opposite. They had known Christ surely
22:54long enough to recognize him again when he appeared amongst them. And with one concurrent
23:00voice they testified, He is risen from the dead. Secondly, we have the testimony of the angels
23:08and by their various appearances as bearers of the news. Thirdly, the resurrection of Christ was not
23:17denied even by his enemies, but was covertly recognized and admitted, even while the Jews agreed to a
23:24traditional falsehood to conceal from their posterity that which they knew to be a fact.
23:32Fourthly, the apostles constantly attested to the fact, as did the fathers of the primitive
23:37Christian Church, such as Ignatius and Polycarp and the other venerable custodians of the truth.
23:46Finally, Christ rose likewise in precise accordance with the scripture and with the same body as that
23:53in which he had lived and died. The language of the text expresses the great humiliation of Jesus Christ.
24:03Christ, come, see the place where the Lord lay. We cannot meditate beside the place where the Lord
24:12lay without learning something of the infinite love of God. Neither can we look upon the empty tomb
24:21without being convinced of the divine faithfulness, faithfulness as to promises, types, shadows and predictions.
24:33This visit to the place where the Lord lay must bring with it too a striking evidence of his divine
24:39sovereignty.
24:41I have the power to lay down my life and I have the power to take it back again.
24:48And if thus he held in his sovereign hand the issues and the destinies of his own career,
24:53he can in like manner overrule and control the destinies of his people.
25:02Is not this vacant tomb an almost satirical evidence of his triumph over his enemies and ours?
25:12Come and see the place where the Lord lay, that you may behold in it the certain and the glorious
25:18pledge of a perfected salvation.
25:25The angel told the women to have no fear, for they were searching for Jesus.
25:32Quite apart from any other aspects of today's reading, this statement contains a great promise.
25:40For if we too are genuinely in search of Jesus, then we too have nothing to fear, for we are
25:48well on the way to our own salvation.
25:51For those of us who are still searching, this gives us the confidence to continue our search and to find,
25:58claiming our reward in heaven in the process.
26:04Let us search on in confidence, as we too may find every choice.
26:14The question meets us today as we think of the narrative of the text.
26:19How do we stand related to that assembly on the Galilean mountain and to that last command of our adored
26:27Lord?
26:29The answer which I trust we shall all feel inclined to give is this, that we are related to that
26:36assembly just as though we had formed part of it originally.
26:41To that last command, as though we had heard it in audible words from the lips of our Lord.
26:49That we may be confirmed in this conviction, let us ask and answer some further questions.
26:56Is the need of the world any greater or less now than it was then?
27:02Substantially it is the same.
27:04It was great and most urgent then, and it is great and most urgent now.
27:12Go, therefore, into the busy world immediately around you, and into the wider world beyond with the good news of
27:19God.
27:20Tell men that God loves them, that Christ is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God
27:26by him.
27:29Such is the great commission, the most important effort entrusted to men.
27:34Note its universality, its intellectual character and its gentleness.
27:43Are the encouragements given to those who put themselves instantly in a way of obedience with this last command,
27:50in any manner or degree less than they were at first, or through the primitive ages?
27:58Christ's assertions regarding his power and presence were immediately put to the proof by his followers,
28:04and in no long time they were able to point rejoicingly to certain deafenest results,
28:10not only in the inward experience, but in the lives and characters of men.
28:18The most marvellous changes took place, such as had never been obtained under any other teaching or influence whatsoever.
28:27In a state of society like our own, which has long been under more or less of the general Christian
28:33culture,
28:34we cannot expect to see many changes so visibly striking as those of early times.
28:41But those of us who will look below the surface of things will see that changes the same in essence
28:46are being produced all of us,
28:49and that the same sanctified grace is still at work.
28:54When men and women go forth and teach the true gospel in the spirit of love and loyalty,
28:59the Lord works with them and confirms the word by signs following them.
29:05It is a great work, so great that no other can be likened to it.
29:11All other good works are only parts of it.
29:15It will be a long and hard work, but it will be done.
29:20As surely as God is the Father, and Jesus Christ the Son,
29:25there will be glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will towards men.
29:34In a manner of speaking, we are all priests, but we all have a duty to tell others the gospel.
29:40And Jesus tells us to go out and spread the word, and to be assured that he will be with
29:46us always.
29:50Moses told the people of Israel about the prophets that God would call to lead his people.
29:56These people will speak the word of God, and those who hear and do not believe will be condemned.
30:01However, it will be much worse for the false prophets.
30:06We are not called to be prophets, but we all have been called to share the gospel with others,
30:15both directly and by example in the way we live our daily lives.
30:39Be grateful, O God.
