00:23Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, from the cross, looked in upon your mother, overwhelmed with
00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,
00:43as also you commended John, and in him, all of us, to her maternal care.
00:50Grant me to love and honour your mother, with the purest and most ardent love, that I may have her
00:57for my mother, and be worthily acknowledged by her as her son. Grant that in every necessity, and especially at
01:05the hour of my death, I may find her ever present and at hand to help me.
01:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, with your wounds gaping, and your head crowned with thorns,
01:21while hanging in misery upon the cross, declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation, I may fly with faith to you, my most
01:37holy Father, and putting no confidence in myself, grant that I may place all my hopes in you alone, and
01:44entirely resign myself and trust in you.
01:48Wound my innermost soul, with the remembrance of your wounds, write and imprint them upon my heart, satiate me wholly
01:57with your blood, that all my intentions may be fixed in you alone, and that I may seek and find
02:03and hold you fast, possessing you for ever and ever.
02:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when your body was exhausted from the loss of blood,
02:16gasped for breath, and cried out on the cross that you were tormented with thirst, while you burnt with unspeakable
02:23desire for our salvation.
02:27Give me grace to thirst most ardently after your honour, and the salvation of souls, and be ready cheerfully to
02:35spend myself for them, according to your will.
02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.
02:53But give me grace to love you above all, and with my whole soul, and quietly to rest in you.
03:02Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were thirsty, even at the point of death,
03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting this, you might make satisfaction
03:17for our gluttony, giving us an example of poverty.
03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,
03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving, whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, the taste of my heart, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing
03:44to you, and may find nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:24Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service, but a fervent spirit, always be ever renewed
04:31within me, that I may daily be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.
04:59You are dead, my beloved one, that I may live forever.
05:06What hope, what confidence is laid up for me in your death and in your blood, I glorify you, I
05:12give you thanks as far as in me lies.
05:15Give me grace to die entirely, to sin and all evil desires, and to live to you alone.
05:23May I think of you alone, may my understanding exercise itself in nothing except you,
05:30that, clad in your grace and with holy charity, I may soon after the close of this life come to
05:37you, the true paradise.
05:39O good Jesus, by your bitter passion and death, grant to me the living pardon and grace, and to the
05:46faithful departed rest and everlasting light.
05:50Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, at whose death the sun withdrew its light,
05:57and the veil of the temple was divided in two, the earth quaked, and the rocks were cut, and the
06:04graves opened.
06:07May the rays of your grace never leave me, I beg you, you son of righteousness,
06:14you that are my God, may they always lighten even the very inmost recesses of my heart,
06:21that I may joyfully serve you for ever.
06:25Tear away from me the veil of hypocrisy, make the ground of my soul quake with saving penitence,
06:32rend in tomb this heart of stone of mine, that, being wholly renewed within,
06:38I may despise anything perishable, and love only the things that are of heaven.
06:45Amen.
06:49O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:02O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:20O Lord, open our lips, and our tears, and our hearts join your praise.
07:30O Lord, be to you, O Lord, open our hearts as well.
07:37O Lord, be to you, O Lord,

13:27his accounts a man who owed 10 000 talents was brought to him because he was not able to repair
13:36to the lord ordered him to be sold along with his wife children and whatever he possessed
13:42and repayment to be made then the slave threw himself to the ground before him saying
13:49be patient with me and i will repay you everything the lord had compassion of the slave and released
13:58him forgiving him the debt after he went out the same slave found one of his fellow slaves
14:05who owed him 100 silver coins and so he grabbed him by the throat and started to choke him saying
14:13pay back what you owe me then his fellow slave threw himself down and begged him
14:20be patient with me and i will repay you but he refused instead he went out and threw him into
14:27prison until he repaid the debt when his fellow slaves saw what had happened they were very upset
14:35and went and told their lord everything that had taken place
14:42then his lord called the first slave and said to him evil slave i forgave you all that debt because
14:50you begged me should you not have shown mercy to your fellow slave just as i showed it to you
14:58in anger his lord turned him over to the prison guards to torture him until he repaid all he owed
15:08so also my heavenly father will do to you if each of you does not forgive your brother from your
15:14heart
15:16now when jesus finished these sayings he left galilee and went to the region of judea beyond the jordan river
15:24large crowds followed him and he healed them there this is the word of the lord thanks be to god
15:38so far the directions given by jesus have been with a view to the good of the offending brother and
15:45the
15:45honor of christ and his cause it remains to be seen how the offended person is to act on his
15:53part
15:53here the rule is very simple forgive what satisfaction then is the offended party to get
16:04the satisfaction of forgiving that is all and it is enough
16:12it will be observed indeed that our lord in his discourse up until the point we have reached
16:18in the current gospel i said nothing directly about forgiveness it is fairly implied however in the
16:27manner of due process in the very first act of it indeed for no one will go to an offending
16:35brother
16:35with the object of gaining him for christ unless he first forgive him in his heart
16:43peter appears to have been revolving this in his mind and in so doing he cannot get over a difficulty
16:50as to the limits of forgiveness he was familiar of course with the traditional rabbinical limit of the
16:58third offense after which the obligation to forgiveness ceased impressed with the spirit of his master's
17:06teaching he no doubt thought he was showing great liberality in more than doubling the number of times the
17:12offense might be repeated and still be considered pardonable lord how often shall my brother sin against
17:21me and i forgive me and i forgive him seven times it has been thought that some of his brothers
17:28had perhaps
17:29been treating peter badly so that his patience was a little tried be that as it may the question was
17:37not at all unnatural but was founded on a fallacy which our lord clears away in his answer thoroughly exposed
17:46by means of the striking parable which followed the fallacy was this that we have the right to resent
17:55an injury that in refraining from this we are forbearing to exercise our right and consequently
18:01that there is a limit beyond which we have no call to exercise such forbearance
18:10our lord by his answer cleared away any such limit and makes the obligation unconditional and universal
18:21the parable shows the reason why there should be no limit that all believers or members of the church
18:28by accepting from god his unlimited forgiveness that has been extended to us
18:34and therefore we are implicitly obliged to extend a likewise unlimited forgiveness to all others
18:45there is no duty on which our lord insists more strenuously than this duty of forgiving those who
18:52trespass against us always connecting closely together our forgiving and our being forgiven and in this
19:00parable it is set out in the strongest possible light the greatest offense of which our fellow man can be
19:10guilty
19:11is as nothing to the sins we have committed against god the proportion suggested is startling the larger
19:21sum is more than two million pounds on the current possible computation but the smaller is not much more than
19:29than four shillings this is no exaggeration seven times altogether for a brother's offenses seems almost unpardonable
19:41do we not offend against god as many times in one single hour so think of the days and the
19:49years of our sin
19:51this is a startling thought on the one side but how cheering on the other for the immensity of the
20:00debt
20:00does not interfere in the slightest with the freeness fullness and absoluteness of the forgiveness
20:08truly there is no more satisfying or reassuring presentation of the gospel than this parable
20:14especially these very words which rang like the unmerciful servants here i forgave you all that debt
20:28but just in proportion to the grandeur of the gospel here unfolded is the rigor of the requirement that as
20:36we have
20:36been forgiven so must we also forgive while we gladly take the abounding comfort let us not miss the stern
20:47lesson
20:48clearly given by the very strongest of feelings our lord paints the picture of this man in the most hideous
20:55color so as to fill our minds and our hearts with a proper loathing of the conduct of those he
21:01represents
21:03the same intention is apparent in the very severe terms in which the punishment is denounced
21:11his lord was wroth and delivered him to the tormentors
21:16after this how awful is the closing sentence so likewise shall my heavenly father do to you
21:25if you in your hearts do not forgive everyone his brother in their trespasses against him
21:35is that tender name of father out of place by no means for it is not the outraged love of
21:42god that cries
21:43out against the unforgiving soul of the words from your hearts are they not so hard on poor frail human
21:52nature
21:54it is easy though to grant forgiveness with the lips but how about from the heart
22:01and yet so it stands written it only shows the need we have not only of unmeasured mercy but of
22:08unmeasured grace
22:10nothing but the love of christ can constrain to such forgiveness the warning was a solemn one but it
22:19need need have no terror for those who are truly learning the lesson of the cross and welcoming the spirit
22:25of christ to reign in their hearts for i can do all things through christ who strengthens me
22:35there is an admirable fullness and harmony in christ's teaching of this subject as on every other
22:43the duty of unlimited forgiveness is most plainly enjoined but not that weak forgiveness which consists
22:51simply in permitting a man to trespass as he chooses
22:57forgiveness and faithfulness go hand in hand the forgiveness of the christian is in no case to be the
23:04offspring of a weak unmanly indifference to wrong but it should spring from gratitude and love
23:13gratitude to god who has forgiven our enormous debt and love to the enemy who has wronged him
23:22it must be combined with that faithfulness and fortitude which constrains him to go to the offending
23:28party and frankly though kindly tell him his fault christ's doctrine of forgiveness has not one atom of
23:38meanness in it and his doctrine of faithfulness not a spark of malice the wisdom that is from above is
23:47first
23:47pure then peaceful gentle and easy to be entreated full of mercy and good fruit without partiality and
23:57without hypocrisy and the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace
24:10there were two main roads from galilee to jerusalem one passed through samaria to the west of the jordan
24:18and the other through perea to the east and it was by the former that our lord went northward from
24:26judea to
24:27begin his work in galilee and it is now by the other that he comes south to complete his sacrifice
24:34in jerusalem
24:37as he must need go through samaria so then he must need through go through perea now
24:45the main thought in his mind is the journey but he cannot pass through the large and important
24:50district beyond the jordan without bringing the kingdom of heaven near to the people
24:55and accordingly we read the great multitudes followed him and he healed them there
25:02we learn also from saint luke's gospel that he went through the cities and villages teaching
25:07on his journey toward jerusalem from there the details recorded especially the mission of the 70 which
25:16belongs to that period it is evident that these circuits in perea must have occupied several months
25:24during the work of these months our evangelist is silent just as he was silent concerning the earlier
25:31work in judea and samaria as recorded by saint john we are reminded by this of the fragmentary nature of
25:40these memorials of our lord and when we consider how much is omitted in the narratives we can understand
25:48how difficult it is to form a closely connected history without any gaps between and with accurately
25:55fitted connections at the intersections of the different accounts
26:01there is however no difficulty here for by comparison with the third gospel we find that our evangelist
26:08admits all the circuits in perea and takes up the story again when our lord is just about to leave
26:15that region for jerusalem when we take his point of view we can see how natural this would have been
26:23it was his special calling to give a full account of his work in galilee and hence the haste with
26:31which
26:31he passes from what is necessary for him to tell of the early years in the south until the work
26:37in galilee
26:38began and in the same way now that the work in galilee is done he hastens on to the great
26:45crisis in
26:45jerusalem in following the journey southward he lingers only in two places each of them seem to be
26:53associated with a special memory one is capernaum where jesus as we have seen tarried for a few days
27:01before taking his leave of galilee the other is the place beyond the john the place where in baptism
27:11he had solemnly entered on his work where again he remained for a brief period before going up to
27:20jerusalem for the very last time
27:28let us pray
27:31grant our lord we beseech you that the course of this world may be so peacefully ordered by your governors
27:38that your church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness through jesus christ our lord amen
27:53may the lord bless us and keep us from all evil bringing us to everlasting life amen
