11:07As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
11:14His disciples asked him,
11:16Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind?
11:21This man or his parents?
11:25Jesus answered,
11:27Neither this man nor his parents sinned,
11:29but he was born blind,
11:31so that the act of God may be revealed through what happens to him.
11:36We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me,
11:39as long as it is daytime.
11:42Night is coming, where no one can work.
11:45As long as I am in the world,
11:47I am the light of the world.
11:52Having said this, he spat on the ground and made some mud with his saliva.
11:58He smeared the mud on the blind man's eyes and said to him,
12:03Go and wash in the pool of Siloam,
12:06which is translated, scent.
12:08And so the man went away and washed,
12:11and came back, seeing.
12:15Then the neighbours and the people who had seen him previously as a beggar,
12:19began saying,
12:21Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?
12:25Some people said,
12:27This is the man.
12:28While others said,
12:30No, but it looks like him.
12:33The man himself kept insisting,
12:36I am the one.
12:39And so they asked him,
12:41How then were you made to see?
12:44He replied,
12:46The man called Jesus made mud,
12:48smeared it on my eyes and told me,
12:50Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.
12:53So I went and washed,
12:55and was able to see.
12:59They said to him,
13:00But where is this man?
13:02He replied,
13:03I don't know.
13:06They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.
13:10Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.
13:17So the Pharisees asked him again how he had gained his sight.
13:21He replied,
13:23He put mud on my eyes and I washed,
13:26and now I can see.
13:29Then some of the Pharisees began to say,
13:32This man is not from God,
13:34because he does not observe the Sabbath.
13:37But others suggested,
13:39How can a man who is a sinner perform such miraculous sights?
13:43And so there was a division among them.
13:48So again they asked the man who used to be blind.
13:52So,
13:53what do you say about him since he caused you to see?
13:57He is a prophet,
13:58the man replied.
14:01Then the Jewish religious leaders refused to believe
14:04he had really been blind,
14:05and had gained his sight,
14:07until at last they summoned the parents of the man
14:10who had become able to see.
14:14They asked the parents,
14:16Is this your son who we say was born blind?
14:19How is it then that he can now see?
14:23His parents replied,
14:25We know that this is our son and that he was born blind,
14:29but we do not know how he is able to see,
14:32nor do we know how he was caused to see.
14:37Ask him.
14:38He is a mature adult and he can speak for himself.
14:43His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders.
14:49For the leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ
14:54would be expelled from the synagogues.
14:57For this reason his parents said,
15:00He is a mature adult.
15:02Ask him.
15:06So they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him,
15:10Promise before God to tell the truth.
15:13We know that this man is a sinner.
15:17He replied,
15:18I do not know whether that man is a sinner or not.
15:23For they know I do know one thing,
15:25that although I was blind I can now see.
15:31Then they said to him,
15:33What did he do to you?
15:35How did he cause you to see?
15:39He answered,
15:41I have already told you and you didn't listen.
15:44Why do you want to hear it again?
15:46You people don't want to become his disciples too,
15:49do you?
15:52They heaped insults on him saying,
15:55You are his disciple.
15:57We are disciples of Moses.
15:59We know that God spoke with Moses.
16:02But we do not know where this man comes from.
16:05The man replied,
16:07This is indeed a remarkable thing,
16:10that you do not know where he comes from
16:12and yet he caused me to see.
16:15We know that God doesn't listen to sinners.
16:17But if anyone is devout and does his will,
16:20God listens to him.
16:23Never before has anyone heard of someone
16:26causing a man born blind to see.
16:29If this man were not from God,
16:32he could not do anything.
16:36They replied,
16:38You were born in sinfulness,
16:40and yet you presume to teach us.
16:42And they threw him out.
16:47Jesus heard that they had thrown him out.
16:50And so he found the man and said to him,
16:53Do you believe in the Son of Man?
16:56The man replied,
16:58And who is he, sir,
17:00that I might believe in him?
17:03Jesus told him,
17:05You have seen him.
17:06He is the one speaking with you.
17:10He said,
17:12Lord, I believe.
17:14And he worshipped him.
17:17Jesus said,
17:19For judgment I have come into this world,
17:22so that those who do not see may gain their sight,
17:25and the ones who see may become blind.
17:31This is the word of the Lord.
17:34Thanks be to God.
17:40This passage opens with the comment that Jesus,
17:43with his followers,
17:44happened to pass by a blind man,
17:47one who had been so since birth.
17:51We should note that we are not told,
17:53as was the case in other miracles,
17:55that he asked for help.
17:57But the first of all,
17:58the disciples asked why the man was blind.
18:02The response of Jesus,
18:04was that the man was blind,
18:05in order that he could be made to see,
18:07the true light.
18:12You can see the heart of Jesus,
18:14going out to this man.
18:16And the reaction of Jesus was immediate.
18:19It is possible,
18:20to feel him walking over to the man,
18:23while still discussing the answer,
18:24to the disciples' question.
18:27And for me,
18:28this is the key to the passage.
18:31Jesus was loving,
18:33and compassionate beyond belief.
18:35He could never stop working.
18:37He could not pass this man,
18:38without stopping to help him.
18:42More so,
18:43because he was passing by,
18:45we see that he was on his place,
18:46from one place to another.
18:47But even when he was travelling,
18:50he stopped,
18:51and spent as long as it was going to take.
18:55For we read in verse 35,
18:57that Jesus was still in the area,
18:59and the man was converted.
19:04The Pharisees worked themselves up,
19:06into such a lather,
19:07that the blind man,
19:09or the man who was once blind,
19:11was running rings around them,
19:13in their arguments.
19:14And he could see,
19:15that they were stubborn,
19:16and beyond listening.
19:19Not only did Jesus cure,
19:21the man's physical affliction,
19:22but also his sinful state.
19:25He recognised Jesus as Lord,
19:27and became a believer,
19:29despite the fact,
19:30that in doing so,
19:31he was to go on,
19:32to become an outcast,
19:34of his community.
19:37Following Jesus,
19:38is both a miraculous experience,
19:40and a painful one.
19:43For you stand to get ostracised,
19:44by your friends,
19:46your family,
19:47and your community.
19:49The bottom line,
19:50is that people in general,
19:52do not like being confronted,
19:53by the truth.
19:54And if they,
19:55if you embrace it,
19:57they,
19:58will reject you.
20:02The instinct,
20:03that there is a connection,
20:04between sin and penalty,
20:06is universal,
20:07and from God.
20:11The grossest forms,
20:12of sacrifice,
20:13that have been made,
20:14in the names of religion,
20:15horrible,
20:17at their root,
20:18in a true instinct.
20:20The revelation,
20:21of God in Christ,
20:22came not to uproot,
20:23this belief,
20:24but to interpret,
20:26to guide,
20:27and to lead it,
20:28to bear fruit.
20:30Bodily sickness,
20:32is to a certain extent,
20:33the lot,
20:34of every single one of us,
20:36and we may not,
20:37show ourselves anxious,
20:38to connect it,
20:39with the notion of punishment,
20:41or specific acts.
20:43We have learnt too,
20:45since the days,
20:45of the first Christians,
20:47something more,
20:47of the laws of hope,
20:48than they were acquainted with.
20:50And this knowledge,
20:51tends to reduce,
20:53within narrower limits,
20:54the afflictions,
20:55which we designate,
20:56as judgments.
20:58But the tendency,
20:59to view sin,
21:00and punishment,
21:01as different things,
21:02and the connection,
21:03between them,
21:04as arbitrary,
21:06is unhappily,
21:07not less strong,
21:08in the full light,
21:09of the present century,
21:11than in the glimmering dawn,
21:13in which the first Christians,
21:14walked.
21:19Jesus said,
21:20Neither has this man sinned,
21:22nor his parents.
21:25We are to understand,
21:26this answer,
21:27with reference,
21:27to the question,
21:28which profited.
21:31The man had,
21:32we are sure,
21:33been a sinner,
21:34and also his parents.
21:37But there was no special,
21:39unrighteousness,
21:40either in the parents,
21:42or the child,
21:43which had brought upon them,
21:44this sad calamity.
21:49The works of God,
21:50were to be made manifest,
21:52in this man.
21:53Not one work only.
21:55Therefore,
21:56not the miracle,
21:57of a sudden restoration,
21:58of sight,
21:58by itself.
22:01The miracle,
22:01is a sign,
22:02a witness,
22:03as it were,
22:04of the nature,
22:05of him,
22:06who wrote it.
22:08The incident,
22:09which opened the eyes,
22:09of the poor vagrant,
22:11is one of those,
22:12which have left in light,
22:13upon a sin-blinded world.
22:17In all evil,
22:18in disease,
22:19and in disorder,
22:20is a work of God,
22:22made manifest.
22:23Because we see,
22:24these things to be evil,
22:26through the light,
22:27which is his.
22:29The sin,
22:30that is seen to be sin,
22:31the disease,
22:32and death,
22:33are recognised,
22:33as the enemies,
22:34of the divine order.
22:37And so,
22:38we are aware,
22:38just like St Paul,
22:40of a body of death,
22:41to which we are bound to prisoners.
22:44That,
22:45in fine,
22:47we feel,
22:47the punishment of sin,
22:49is a matter,
22:49for profound thankfulness.
22:52The principle,
22:53which makes work,
22:54Christian,
22:55is the will,
22:56and the glory of God.
22:58In the midst,
22:59of our working life,
23:00in the midst,
23:00of our religious thought,
23:02in our times,
23:03of devotion,
23:04in our times,
23:04of prayer,
23:06Jesus speaks,
23:07to us,
23:08and bears,
23:08his unflinching testimony,
23:11calling,
23:11upon the Christian,
23:12to persevere,
23:13making,
23:14his work,
23:15true.
23:17This,
23:18he does,
23:18in three ways.
23:20He does it,
23:21because he has robed himself,
23:24in our humanity.
23:26Putting on,
23:27in our humanity,
23:28Jesus added,
23:29a dignity,
23:30to our nature.
23:32It was made,
23:33in the image,
23:33of the eternal.
23:35It was created,
23:36indeed,
23:37with the stamp,
23:38upon it,
23:39which even,
23:39original sin,
23:40could not wipe out,
23:41altogether.
23:43But Jesus,
23:44through the incarnation,
23:45has done more.
23:47He has robed himself,
23:48the most high God,
23:49in that nature.
23:51In that way,
23:53he has added dignity.
23:54And by the fact,
23:55that you have been dignified,
23:57by your nature,
23:58being taken into God.
24:00By that fact,
24:01you are taught,
24:02that the dignity,
24:02of that nature,
24:03is never satisfied.
24:05Unless entirely,
24:06you aim,
24:07in your work,
24:08to do God's will,
24:10and to set forth,
24:11God's glory.
24:12So he has borne,
24:14and is bearing,
24:15his witness.
24:18He bore it further,
24:19by himself toiling,
24:21and teaching,
24:21in that nature.
24:23He showed it,
24:24to you and me,
24:26not only,
24:26in its dignity,
24:28but in its power.
24:30The power,
24:31of human nature,
24:31is all but infinite.
24:34But all,
24:35infinite,
24:36as seen,
24:37in the work,
24:37that it can do.
24:39when it is assisted,
24:40by the power,
24:41which our blessed master,
24:43exerted most,
24:44the power of God.
24:46You have,
24:47in a sense,
24:48power to do,
24:49even as God does,
24:50rising up,
24:51into the life,
24:52of God.
24:56And need it be added,
24:57that he witnessed it,
24:59by his death.
25:01Not only,
25:02by being robed,
25:02in humanity,
25:03not only,
25:04by showing the power,
25:05of humanity to God,
25:07but by dying,
25:08in this humanity.
25:10By exhibiting,
25:11to us in this way,
25:12the immensity,
25:13of the value,
25:14that God placed upon it.
25:16He taught us,
25:17it only ended labor.
25:21If the Christian,
25:22is to do his work,
25:23it does not matter,
25:24about the dimensions,
25:25of its outward expression.
25:27It does not matter,
25:28about the texture,
25:28of the material.
25:30The great point,
25:31for you and me,
25:32to see,
25:33is the principle,
25:35lying behind it,
25:36to be real.
25:37One that is maintained,
25:39in its reality,
25:40by the grace,
25:40of the blessed spirit.
25:42By the example,
25:43of our divine redeemer.
25:46That principle being,
25:49in its aim,
25:50and object,
25:51the will,
25:52and the glory,
25:53of God.
25:59Let us pray.
26:01Almighty,
26:02and most merciful God,
26:04whose only gift,
26:06comes that your faithful people,
26:07give you true,
26:08and laudable service.
26:10Grant,
26:11we beseech you,
26:12that we may,
26:13so faithfully,
26:14serve you,
26:14in this life,
26:15that we will not,
26:16fail,
26:17finally,
26:17to attain,
26:18your heavenly promises.
26:20Through the merits,
26:21of Jesus Christ,
26:22our Lord.
