00:22Let us pray.
00:28Let us pray.
00:56May all arrogance be ever cast down.
00:59May all longing for the praise of men be extinguished.
01:02May all wantonness of self-conceit be quenched within me.
01:07Give me grace, O Lord, to flee any honour, to hate distinction,
01:12and to submit myself with readiness to all men for your sake.
01:17Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:20who, as a little child, did with your tender mother suffer persecution,
01:25and did not refuse to be carried as an exile fleeing into Egypt.
01:31Give me grace amidst the storms of adversity and the blasts of persecution and misfortune,
01:37to fly for refuge to you alone, to seek you, to call upon you.
01:44Grant that I may receive all things with gladness at your hands,
01:48may endure all things in meekness of heart,
01:51and may cleave with thanksgiving without wavering to you.
01:56Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:59who, when you remained behind in the temple,
02:02your mother sought for sorrowing,
02:05and at length with joy found you sitting in the midst of the doctors,
02:09hearing and asking them questions.
02:12May you so give and communicate yourself to me,
02:15that I may never be separated from you,
02:18and never be without the comfort of your blessed friendship.
02:22Drive sloth from my heart,
02:25dispel any dullness that is displeasing in your sight.
02:29Grant me perfect devotion,
02:31and such an ardent thirst after piety,
02:34that my soul may be so affected and possessed by it,
02:38as never to feel satisfied with worshipping you.
02:43Praise, honour, and glory be to you,
02:45who gave yourself up to live in concealment for thirty years,
02:50to be reputed by the Jews the son of Joseph the carpenter,
02:54and be subject to the commands of your mother and the same Joseph.
02:59May your grace, I beg you,
03:02root out and thoroughly pluck up
03:04from the innermost recesses of my heart
03:06any ambition and seeking of glory,
03:10that I may become belittled in my own eyes,
03:13and may love to be unknown and considered of no account,
03:17submitting myself to all,
03:19and obeying them for your honour.
03:22Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:25who did not refuse to come to the River Jordan,
03:28and be baptised there by your servant John.
03:33May you thoroughly cleanse me by your merits in this life,
03:38that freed from all vices and sins,
03:41I may be filled with the love of you,
03:44and long for my heavenly country.
03:47Make me, I beg you,
03:49before my soul quits this body,
03:52pleasing to you in all things,
03:54that, departing from this life,
03:56I may be for ever in heaven with you,
03:59to see you,
04:01to enjoy you,
04:02and to praise your holy name for ever and ever.
04:06Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:09who for our sake dwelt in the wilderness,
04:12amongst the wild beasts,
04:14and fasted and watched in prayer for forty days and forty nights,
04:19permitting yourself to be tempted by the devil,
04:21whom you overcame when angels came and ministered to you.
04:26Grant me grace to discipline, overcome,
04:29and bring into subjection my sinful flesh
04:32with its evil affections.
04:37Give me grace to be instant in prayer
04:39and all other spiritual exercises,
04:41and grant that with your continual help
04:45I may completely overcome sins of gluttony
04:48and may escape the snares and schemes of the devil.
04:54Let no temptations, I beg you,
04:56defile me,
04:57nor separate me from you,
04:59but may they rather purify me
05:02and unite and join me with you.
05:06Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
05:09who gave himself up to preach repentance,
05:13to call to you disciples,
05:15and from them choose the twelve apostles
05:16to be the special heralds of the faith,
05:20gathering together the children of God
05:22that was scattered abroad.
05:24Draw me after you,
05:26and powerfully excite my heart to love you.
05:30Do not permit me to neglect the grace
05:33with which you called me,
05:34but make me ready to despise the world
05:37and all perishable things,
05:39following you,
05:40taking your humility and charity as my example.
05:44Give me grace to look for you alone,
05:47and with earnest longing
05:48to sigh continually after you.
05:52Amen.
05:56O Lord, open our lips,
05:59and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:08O be joyful in the Lord,
06:13O be glad,
06:15serve the Lord with gladness,
06:19and come in light,
06:21present with a song.
06:25Be sure that the Lord,
06:29he is God,
06:31which is he that can fail us,
06:34and not we ourselves.
06:37We are his people,
06:40and the sheep of his pasture.
06:44O do you pray,
06:47into this place we can see,
06:50and into this gospel place,
06:55be thankful unto him,
06:59and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:04O the Lord is gracious,
07:08his mercy is everlasting,
07:14and his truth endureth
07:17from generation to generation.
07:27Glory be to the Father,
07:31and to the Son,
07:34and to the Holy Ghost,
07:38as it was in the beginning,
07:41his love and ever shall be,
07:48world without end.
07:55Amen.
07:56Amen.
07:59Amen.
08:10Amen.
08:11O Son, to Thine hand, Thou hast burned away the captivity of Jacob.
08:21Thou hast forgiven me, O friends of Thy people, and covered all their sins.
08:31Thou hast taken away all my displeasure, and turned my stem from my wrathful indignation.
08:45Thou hast taken away all my displeasure, and turned my stem from my wrathful indignation.
08:54Let Thou be this peace that has fallen
08:59And let Thou stretch out Thy love from one generation to another
09:08Let Thou not turn again unto the cross
09:15That Thy people may rejoice in Thee
09:20Show us Thy blessing, O Lord, and counsels Thy salvation
09:30Bring the heart of what the Lord God has saved on Sunday
09:37For He shall speak peace unto His people
09:42And so He saves that big sun once again
09:48For His salvation is life and life's living
09:54That's longing, grace, heaven, and heaven
10:00The sin and truth are mixed together
10:07Righteousness and peace have kissed each other
10:12So shall flourish all the people
10:17And righteousness hath lost all the men
10:23With the Lord shall show love in Jesus
10:29And all land shall be born in peace
10:35Righteousness shall only come
10:41And each of my best is going with the Lord
10:56Glory be to the Father
10:59And to the Son
11:02And to the Holy Ghost
11:06As it was in the beginning
11:10Is now and ever shining
11:16As we have saved
11:23Amen
11:38A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, Chapter 1
11:46In the beginning was the Word
11:48and the Word was with God
11:50and the Word was fully God
11:53The Word was with God in the beginning
11:56All things were created by Him
11:58and apart from Him
11:59not one thing was created that has been created
12:03In Him was life
12:04and the life was the light of mankind
12:08The light shines on in the darkness
12:10but the darkness has not mastered it
12:14A man came sent from God
12:16whose name was John
12:19He came as a witness to testify about the light
12:22so that everybody might believe through Him
12:26He Himself was not the light
12:28but He came to testify about the light
12:33The true light
12:34who gives light to everyone
12:36was coming into the world
12:38He was in the world
12:39and the world was created by Him
12:41but the world did not recognize Him
12:45He came to what was His own
12:47but His own people did not receive Him
12:50But to all who have received Him
12:53those who believe in His name
12:55He has given the right to become God's children
12:59Children not born by human parents
13:01or by human desire
13:03or a husband's decision
13:04but by God
13:08Now the Word became flesh
13:09and took up residence among us
13:11We saw His glory
13:13The glory of the one that only
13:16full of grace and truth
13:17who came from the Father
13:20John testified about Him
13:22and shouted out
13:23This one was the one about whom I said
13:26He who comes after me
13:28is greater than I am
13:29because He existed before me
13:33For we have all received from His fullness
13:36one gracious gift or another
13:38For the law was given through Moses
13:41but grace and truth
13:42came about through Jesus Christ
13:46No one has ever seen God
13:47The only one Himself God
13:50who is in Christ's fellowship with the Father
13:52has made God known
13:58Now this was John's testimony
13:59when the Jewish leaders
14:01sent priests and Levites
14:02from Jerusalem to ask Him
14:04Who are you?
14:08He confessed
14:09He did not deny but confessed
14:11I am not the Christ
14:15So they asked Him
14:16Then who are you?
14:18Are you Elijah?
14:19He said
14:19I am not
14:21Are you the prophet?
14:22He answered
14:23No
14:26Then they said to Him
14:27Who are you?
14:28Tell us
14:29so that we can give an answer
14:30to those who sent us
14:32What do you have to say
14:34about yourself?
14:37John said
14:38I am the voice of one
14:39shouting in the wilderness
14:41Make straight the way
14:43for the Lord
14:44As Isaiah the prophet said
14:47Now they had been sent
14:49by the Pharisees
14:50So they asked John
14:52Why then are you baptizing
14:54if you are not the Christ
14:55nor Elijah
14:56nor a prophet?
14:59John answered him
15:01I baptize with water
15:03Among you
15:04stands one
15:05whom you do not recognize
15:06who is coming after me
15:08I am not worthy
15:10to untie the strap
15:11of his sandal
15:13These things happened
15:14in Bethany
15:15across the Jordan River
15:16where John was baptizing
15:21This is the word
15:22of the Lord
15:23Thanks
15:24Be to God
15:36The first few verses
15:38of John's Gospel
15:39are quite difficult reading
15:41He does not let you down
15:42gently
15:43for the words
15:44are full on
15:45and come straight at you
15:46Very quickly
15:47the scene is set
15:50First there was
15:51the word of God
15:52and then came John
15:54to prepare the way
15:55for Christ
15:55and this is how it happened
15:58This is not a cozy
16:00fireside chat
16:01about how Jesus
16:02lived his time
16:03on earth
16:05This is degree level
16:06theology
16:08But it is however
16:09a great summary
16:10of what our faith
16:11as Christians
16:12is all about
16:14of how Christ
16:15was sent to live
16:15among us
16:16to show us
16:17the way to God
16:17and to give us
16:19the opportunity
16:19to be reconciled
16:21to him
16:24Rumors had reached
16:25the authorities
16:26of John the Baptist
16:28So a delegation
16:29was sent from Jerusalem
16:30to find out
16:32who he was
16:32and what he was up to
16:36They thought perhaps
16:37he might be the Messiah
16:38but he denied this
16:40and said that
16:40he was yet to come
16:42He went on to deny
16:43that he was a prophet
16:45either
16:47The Pharisees
16:48must have been asleep
16:49because Job told them
16:51in no uncertain terms
16:52exactly who he was
16:54with reference
16:55to the prophecies
16:56but this seems
16:58to have passed them by
17:00So let us not be
17:01like the Pharisees
17:02Be alert to the world
17:04around us
17:05Pray for enlightenment
17:07for eyes to see
17:08and ears to hear
17:09lest like them
17:11we miss the truth
17:12when it is laid
17:13in front of us
17:16Why is it
17:18that as we turn
17:19the page
17:19from Luke chapter 24
17:21to John chapter 1
17:23we seem to pass
17:25into another climate
17:27indeed perhaps
17:28even another world
17:31The answer is
17:32at least twofold
17:34First of all
17:35there was so much
17:35to tell
17:37Facts and teachings
17:38of so much
17:39deeper meaning
17:40than those
17:40which the first
17:41three evangelists
17:42have brought
17:43before us
17:45It is secondly
17:46that in the growth
17:47of thoughts
17:47of respecting
17:48the Christ life
17:49and the Christ nature
17:51they had now
17:52grown up
17:52with the full demand
17:53for the full answers
17:54to the numberless
17:55questions
17:55which St John
17:57and St John alone
17:58sets at rest
18:02It is curious
18:03to note
18:04how in each
18:05of the three
18:06Gospels
18:07Matthew, Luke
18:07and John
18:08it is the genealogy
18:10which strikes
18:11the keynote
18:12and how the keynote
18:13dominates
18:15their confidence
18:18In St Matthew
18:19the genealogy
18:19carries you
18:20as far as Abraham
18:21and the whole
18:22Gospel exhibits
18:24the Jewish Messiah
18:26In St Luke
18:27the genealogy
18:29he goes as far
18:29as Adam
18:30and you have
18:31throughout the Gospel
18:32the Saviour
18:33of mankind
18:34the compassionate
18:35brother of the race
18:38But in St John
18:39the genealogy
18:40is taken all the way
18:41back into eternity
18:42It tells you
18:44of a divine
18:45eternal existence
18:46with God
18:46not a separated
18:48existence
18:48but with God
18:50and of work done
18:51and functions
18:52fulfilled
18:53in that eternal
18:54existence
18:55creation
18:56life
18:57and light
18:58of a certain
18:59mysterious
19:00contradiction
19:01on the path
19:01of darkness
19:02to the light
19:05St John's prologue
19:07is no mere
19:08collection of
19:08theological dogma
19:09stuck on to
19:11the beginning
19:11of his Gospel
19:14It is rather this
19:15that he exhibits
19:17the earthly
19:17Christ life
19:18as the prolongation
19:20into mundane
19:20existence
19:21of what had been
19:22going on
19:23in the unseen
19:24from the everlasting
19:25reality
19:26This is clearly
19:27his intention
19:28and you see it
19:29reflected throughout
19:30his selection
19:31of facts
19:31and discourses
19:34The special
19:35aspects
19:36on which St John
19:37dwells in his
19:38picture of the
19:39Christ life
19:39are those which
19:41exhibit him
19:41as being still
19:43with God
19:43as well as
19:44with men
19:49So it is
19:50that St John
19:51who is so careful
19:52to tell us
19:53why Christ
19:53was made flesh
19:54and dwelt
19:54among us
19:55It is St John
19:57who is so careful
19:58to exhibit
19:59the death
19:59of our Lord
20:00as a voluntary
20:01surrender
20:03pleasing to the
20:04Father
20:04freely rendered
20:05on his own
20:06part
20:06and pleasing
20:07because it
20:08was so freely
20:09rendered
20:11Except in John's
20:12view
20:13except his picture
20:14of the visible
20:15Christ life
20:15as the visible
20:16half of the
20:17duplex whole
20:18and the puzzle
20:19vanishes
20:21The gospel
20:22which deals
20:22with the deepest
20:23mysteries
20:24becomes in truth
20:25the gospel
20:26of explanation
20:29The church
20:30in her creed
20:31has been
20:32unequivocal
20:33testimony
20:34to Christ
20:35as the saviour
20:37When we say
20:39that the Son
20:39of God
20:39made the worlds
20:40we do not
20:41speak as
20:42on act
20:43of his
20:44independent
20:45and disconnected
20:46from the
20:46Father
20:47For this
20:48from the nature
20:49of the Son
20:49of God
20:50is impossible
20:52The creative
20:53work of the
20:53Son is carrying
20:54out the creative
20:55purpose of the
20:56Father
20:57Not as by a
20:58subordinate
20:59agent
21:00to whom it
21:01may be said
21:02do this
21:02and he does it
21:04For the Son
21:05of God
21:05is co-eternal
21:06and co-equal
21:06with the Father
21:08and acts
21:08in accord
21:09with him
21:09as a divine
21:10personal agent
21:12delighting
21:13to do
21:13his will
21:14and to
21:15fulfil
21:15his purpose
21:18So let us
21:19return to
21:20the gospel
21:20narrative
21:21and connect
21:22this high
21:22truth
21:23with the
21:24Lord's
21:24humiliation
21:26We are not
21:27sufficiently
21:27accustomed to
21:28do this
21:28We are apt
21:29to forget
21:29his glory
21:30and his
21:30majesty
21:31in the
21:32meanness
21:32of his
21:33earthly
21:33investiture
21:35To us
21:36Christians
21:36who believe
21:37in him
21:37as the
21:38creator
21:38of all
21:38things
21:39It is
21:40a matter
21:40of deep
21:41interest
21:41to watch
21:42every simple
21:43word that
21:43falls from
21:44him
21:44in delusion
21:45to nature
21:47and her
21:47processes
21:48to man
21:49and his
21:49capacities
21:51Knowing as
21:52we do
21:52that such
21:52words
21:53will be
21:53spoken
21:54not from
21:54the weak
21:55and imperfect
21:55store
21:56of the
21:57knowledge
21:57of manly
21:58possession
21:58but from
22:00the inexhaustible
22:01store of
22:01divine wisdom
22:02which first
22:03devised them
22:04and brought
22:05them into
22:05being
22:06themselves
22:10Let us
22:10note the
22:11references
22:11and the
22:12consequences
22:12of this
22:13great
22:13doctrine
22:13relative
22:14to
22:14ourselves
22:17What do
22:17you think
22:17of Christ
22:19is the
22:19most important
22:20question
22:20which can
22:21be asked
22:21of us
22:24Tell them
22:25all the
22:25things that
22:25were made
22:26by him
22:28What then
22:29is the
22:29world to
22:29us
22:30Christians
22:31What
