00:23Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, from the cross, looked in upon your mother, overwhelmed with
00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,
00:42as also you commended John, and in him, all of us, to her maternal care.
00:50Grant me to love and honour your mother with the purest and most ardent love, that I may have her
00:57for my mother and be worthily acknowledged by her as her son.
01:02Grant that in every necessity, and especially at the hour of my death, I may find her ever present and
01:09at hand to help me.
01:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, with your wounds gaping and your head crowned with thorns,
01:21while hanging in misery upon the cross, declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation, I may fly with faith to you, my most

01:44entirely resign myself and trust in you.

02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.

03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting this, you might make satisfaction

03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,
03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving, whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, the taste of my heart, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing
03:44to you, and may find nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, wrought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your

12:42Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus
12:46About seven miles from Jerusalem
12:49They were talking to each other about all the things that had happened
12:54And while they were talking and debating these things
12:56Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them
13:01But their eyes were kept from recognising him
13:05He said to them
13:06What are these matters you are discussing so intently as you walk along
13:11They stood still looking sad
13:13And one of them named Cleopas answered him
13:17Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
13:19Who doesn't know the things that have happened in these days
13:23He said to them
13:24What things?
13:26The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene they replied
13:30A man who with his powerful deeds and words
13:32Proved to be a prophet before God and all the people
13:37How our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be condemned to death
13:41And crucified him
13:44But we had hoped that he would be the one who would redeem Israel
13:49Not only this but it is now the third day since these things happened
13:55Furthermore some of the women of our group
13:57A maesters
13:59They were at the tomb early this morning
14:01And when they did not find his body
14:03They came back and said they had seen a vision of angels
14:07Who said that he was alive
14:11Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb
14:15And found it just as the women had said
14:17But they did not see him
14:21So Jesus said to them
14:23You foolish people
14:25How slow of heart to believe
14:27All that the prophets have spoken
14:30Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things
14:33And to enter into his glory
14:37Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets
14:39He interpreted to them the things written about him
14:42And all the scriptures
14:46So they approached the village
14:48Where they were going
14:50And Jesus acted as though he wanted to go further
14:52But they urged him
14:53Stay with us
14:55Because it is evening and the day is almost done
14:58And so he went in to stay with them
15:02And when he had taken his place at the table with them
15:05He took the bread, blessed it and broke it
15:08And gave it to them
15:10And at this point
15:11Their eyes were opened and they recognised him
15:14And he vanished out of their sight
15:19They said to each other
15:21Didn't our hearts burn within us
15:23While he was speaking with us on the road
15:24While he explained the scriptures to us
15:29So they got up that very hour
15:31And returned to Jerusalem
15:34They found the eleven and those with them
15:36Gathered together saying
15:37The Lord has really risen
15:39And has appeared to Simon
15:43Then they told them what had happened on the road
15:46And how they had recognised him
15:48When he broke breath
15:51And while they were still saying these things
15:53Jesus himself stood amongst them and said
15:57Peace be with you
15:59But they were startled and terrified
16:01Thinking that they saw a ghost
16:05Then he said to them
16:06Why are you frightened?
16:08And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
16:11Look at my hands and my feet
16:13It is I
16:14Touch me and see
16:16A ghost does not have flesh and bones
16:19Like you see I have
16:23When he had said this
16:25He showed them his hands and his feet
16:28And while they still could not believe it
16:30Because of their joy
16:31And were amazed he said to them
16:34Do you have something to eat?
16:37And so they gave him a piece of broiled fish
16:39And he took it and ate it in front of them
16:44Then he said to them
16:45These are my words that I spoke to you
16:47While I was still with you

16:56Then he opened their minds
16:57So that they could understand the scriptures

17:28Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany
17:31And lifting up his hands

17:39And so they worshipped him
17:41And returned to Jerusalem
17:43With great joy
17:44And were continually in the temple courts

17:49This is the word of the Lord

17:59Two disciples on the road
18:01The afternoon of Easter day
18:02Came across a stranger
18:04Who walked with them
18:05Until their destination was reached
18:09They had no idea
18:10Who this man was
18:12And they told him
18:13All that happened in Jerusalem
18:15Over the weekend
18:16About how Jesus was crucified
18:19And appeared to come back to life again
18:24The traveller expounded the profits to them
18:26And still the penny did not drop
18:30Finally
18:31As they reached their village
18:32They invited the man in for a meal
18:34And as the bread was broken
18:36They recognised the man as Jesus himself
18:43One of the things I most like about this account
18:46Is the excitement of the two disciples
18:49It would have been already late
18:51But they immediately rushed
18:53The eight miles back to Jerusalem
18:55To tell the others
18:56That they have seen the Lord in person
19:00They did not wait to return the next day
19:02They straight away turned around
19:04And went back the way they had come
19:08It could well have been
19:09Well after midnight
19:10By the time they got back to the upper room
19:13Where the other disciples were hiding
19:18So how excited are we
19:19By the good news of Easter
19:21Would we walk eight miles
19:23With a stranger
19:24And then walk the eight miles back again
19:26To tell everyone we had met Jesus
19:29Or would we roll into bed
19:30And think we might phone somebody
19:32In the morning
19:36The disciples
19:37On the other hand
19:38Were having a hard time
19:39Believing what they saw
19:41They just couldn't quite rationalise it
19:45They thought they saw a ghost
19:47But yet
19:48Not a ghost
19:50For it ate fish
19:52Nothing was really making any sense
19:54So what was going on?
19:59Jesus opened their minds
20:00And told them
20:01That he had to die
20:02And that on the third day
20:04It was foretold
20:05He would rise again from the dead
20:09Slowly they begin to understand
20:11And the events of the last few days
20:13Start to form some sort of sense
20:18Sometimes life doesn't appear
20:20To make a great deal of sense
20:23Things happen
20:24Apparently for no reason
20:26Sometimes good
20:27And sometimes bad
20:29We sit perplexed
20:30Unable to take in things
20:32Or understand them
20:35We are taught at school
20:37That we are superior beings
20:38That we can rationalise everything
20:41And understand everything
20:44Science has the answers
20:46To all questions
20:48Then something happens
20:50That we cannot properly rationalise
20:52And we are knocked out cold
20:56The simple truth
20:57Is that we don't need
20:59To be able to rationalise everything
21:01Or to understand everything
21:03Indeed it is not even healthy
21:05To attempt to do so
21:07At the end of the day
21:08There are so many things
21:10That we cannot even begin
21:11To understand
21:12If we are truly honest
21:14With ourselves
21:16Only our God
21:17Our creator
21:18Has the answers
21:19And one day
21:20Our minds will also be opened
21:23And we will understand everything
21:27Until then
21:28Let us give thanks to God
21:29For the world that we live in
21:31And for all the mysteries
21:32We cannot begin to understand
21:36Let us stop trying to rationalise
21:39And begin to trust
21:40That God knows best
21:43I believe
21:44That God knows
21:45What he is doing
21:51Let us pray
21:54Let your merciful ears
21:56O Lord
21:57Be open to the prayers
21:58Of your humble servants
21:59That they may obtain
22:01Their petitions
22:02Make them ask such things
