00:22Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:29Who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you
00:33Remained alone in the hands of sinful men
00:36Like a most gentle lamb
00:38Within the jaws of a ravenous wolf
00:43Strengthen my excessive weakness
00:45And confirm my too great unstableness
00:47By the support of your grace
00:49And join me to yourself with the bonds of love
00:53That I may neither have no wish nor the power
00:56Ever to depart or separate myself from you
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:04Who allowed yourself to be led around bound
01:07By an armed band and taken to Annas
01:12Allowing yourself to be stood before him
01:14As though you were a common criminal or robber
01:19O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer
01:22Look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward
01:27You uttered not a single word of complaint
01:30Or murmur or word of resistance
01:33But in silence you followed them wherever they led you
01:37Obeying their commands
01:39And permitted their wanton injuries to you
01:44Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me
01:47To the everlasting glory of your name
01:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:54King of heaven and earth
01:55Who in great humility
01:57As poor and needy and of no account
02:00Was stood before the proud High Priest
02:03And most sweetly endure the dreadful blow
02:07Which his impious servant put upon you
02:12Restrain, I beg you
02:13In me all outbreak of anger and passion
02:17Suppress all acts of indignation
02:20And quench within me all desire of revenge
02:24That when I am provoked by injury
02:27I may not be disturbed
02:28I may offer no resistance
02:31May suffer no disquiet
02:34But endure everything with a quiet mind
02:36May I even repay evil with good
02:41Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
02:43Who permitted himself to be lead-boned
02:46In a shameful manner to Caiaphas
02:48That you might deliver us from the penalty
02:51Of eternal death
02:52Restoring to us true liberty
02:56Make me most ready
02:58To endure every reproach
02:59And all contempt for your name's sake
03:03Grant that in the very middle
03:05Of ridicule and outrage
03:06I may give you thanks with a perfect heart
03:09And by means of these trials
03:11May grow and increase more and more
03:14In your love
03:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:20Who, when three times denied by your Apostle Peter
03:26Mercifully turned and looked upon him with kindness
03:29And brought him to repentance and holy sorrow for his sin
03:32In like manner
03:34May you turn upon me also
03:37Your eye of mercy and love
03:39That I may weep over my past sins
03:42With the tears of true penitence
03:44And may never again commit them
03:47May I never be found sinning against your goodness
03:50In word or deed
03:54Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:56Who stood before the elders and the people of the Jews
03:59With a calm countenance and humble look
04:02Who did not refuse to be falsely accused
04:05And to suffer many injuries
04:09Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:11Or to falsely accuse my neighbour
04:14But that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:17The calumnies that are heaped upon me
04:21Casting all my troubles upon you
04:23May I always in silence
04:25Look for the grave and consolation
04:28At your hands
04:32Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
04:35Who, when Caiaphas the High Priest
04:38Adjured you by the name of God
04:41Declared the truth
04:42And proclaimed yourself the Son of God
04:44And did not refuse to be counted by him
04:47And the rest who stood by as a blasphemer
04:50May I fully abhor this contempt and defence against you
04:54May I in every place
04:57Reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty
05:03May I think of you
05:04Adore, praise and love you
05:07Above all things
05:08Forever and forever
05:11Amen
05:15O Lord, open our lips
05:17And our mouths shall sing your praise
05:27O be joyful in the Lord
05:30O be joyful in the Lord
05:32O be joyful in the Lord
05:33Turn the Lord in gladness
05:37And come in all his prayers
05:41And with your tongue
05:43Be sure that the Lord
05:47He is God
05:49If we see us and pray us
05:53And not we ourselves
05:55We are his people
05:58And the sheep of his pasture
06:01O Lord, open our hearts
06:04Who do your way
06:05Into his peace
06:06We thank you
06:08And into his hearts
06:12We praise
06:13Be thankful unto him
06:17And speak to the Lord
06:20Of his name
06:22O the Lord is gracious
06:25His mercy
06:28His mercy
06:29His mercy
06:30Is everlasting
06:31And his truth
06:34Endureth
06:35From generation
06:37To generation
06:45Glory be to the Father
06:49Glory be to the Father
06:50And to the Son
06:52And to the Holy Ghost
06:56As it was in the beginning
06:59Is now and ever shall be
07:05World without every joy
07:13Amen
07:23Help me, Lord
07:26For there is not one God
07:30Be granted
07:31For the faithful of his
07:36Come on
07:37The children of men
07:41They talk of vanity
07:44Every one
07:46With his name
07:48They do but flatter
07:51With their lips
07:52And descend
07:55With their double heart
07:58The Lord shall move
08:02And down to all his
08:03Be for his
08:05And the tongue
08:08That speaketh
08:09From his
08:11Which has said
08:14Without some
08:16Will we be healed
08:18We are there
08:20That ought to speak
08:22Who is Lord
08:25Over us
08:27Love for the comfort
08:30Let's
08:30Come on
08:32Speak of the need
08:34And because of the
08:38De-smiling
08:40Of the fruit
08:43I will
08:45Off
08:45Save the Lord
08:47And we'll
08:49Help everyone
08:50From him
08:51That sweareth
08:52Against him
08:53And we'll
08:55Set him
08:56At rest
08:58The words
09:00Of the Lord
09:01Are pure words
09:04Even as
09:06The silver
09:07Which on the earth
09:09Is dry
09:10And glorified
09:12Seven times
09:14In the fire
09:16Thou shalt
09:19Keep him
09:20O Lord
09:21Thou shalt
09:23Preserve him
09:25From this
09:26Generation
09:27Forever
09:29He and
09:31Thou shalt
09:32Devote
09:33On every
09:34Side
09:35When they
09:37Are exalted
09:39The children
09:41Of them
09:42Come on
09:45To you
09:48Look
09:51Glory is
09:53The love
09:54And to the
09:56Son
09:57And to the
10:00Holy Ghost
10:02As it was
10:04In the beginning
10:05Is now
10:08And never
10:09Shall we
10:11World
10:13Without
10:14Him
10:18Amen
10:21Amen
10:22Amen
10:26Amen
10:27Amen
10:29Amen
10:31A reading from the Gospel according to St John chapter 8
10:38Jesus went to the Mount of Olives
10:42Early in the morning
10:43He came down to the temple courts again
10:46All the people came to him
10:47And he sat down and began to teach them
10:51The experts in the law and the Pharisees
10:53Brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery
10:58They made her stand in front of them and said to Jesus
11:01Teacher
11:01This woman was caught in the act of adultery
11:05In the law Moses commanded us to stone to death such women
11:09What do you say
11:12Now they asked him this in an attempt to trap him
11:15So that they could bring charges against him
11:20Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger
11:26When they persisted in asking him
11:28He stood up straight and replied
11:31Whoever among you is guiltless
11:32May be the first to throw a stone at her
11:36And then he bent over again and continued writing on the ground
11:44Now when they heard this
11:46They began to drift away one at a time
11:48Starting with the older ones
11:51Until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him
11:56Jesus stood up straight and said to her
12:00Women where are they
12:02Did no one condemn you
12:05She replied
12:06No one Lord
12:09Jesus said
12:10I do not condemn you either
12:14Go and from now on do not sin anymore
12:20Then Jesus spoke out again
12:22I am the light of the world
12:24The one who follows me will never walk in darkness
12:27But will have the light of life
12:32So the Pharisees objected saying
12:35You testify about yourself
12:37So your testimony is not true
12:41Jesus answered
12:43Even if I do testify about myself
12:46My testimony is true
12:48Because I know where I came from
12:49And where I am going
12:52But you people do not know where I came from
12:54Or where I am going
12:57You judge by outward appearances
12:59And I do not judge anyone
13:02But if I do judge
13:04My evaluation is accurate
13:06Because I am not alone when I judge
13:08But I and the Father who sent me
13:10Do so together
13:13It is written in your law
13:15That the testimony of two men is true
13:18I testify about myself
13:19And the Father who sent me
13:21Testifies also about me
13:26Then they asked him
13:27Who is your Father?
13:30Jesus answered
13:32You do not know either me or my Father
13:35For if you knew me
13:36You would know my Father too
13:41Jesus spoke these words
13:42Near the offering box
13:43While he was teaching in the temple courts
13:47And no one seized him
13:48Because his time had not yet come
13:53Then Jesus said to them again
13:54I am going away
13:56And you will look for me
13:58But will die in your sin
14:01Where I am going
14:02You cannot come
14:06So the Jewish leaders began to say
14:08Perhaps he is going to kill himself
14:10Because he says
14:12Where I am going
14:13Then you cannot come
14:16Jesus replied
14:18You people are from below
14:19And I am from above
14:21You people are from this world
14:23I am not from this world
14:26Thus I told you
14:27That you will die in your sins
14:30For unless you believe
14:31That I am he
14:32You will die in your sins
14:36So they said to him
14:38Who are you?
14:41Jesus replied
14:43What I have told you from the beginning
14:46I have many things to say
14:47And to judge about you
14:49But the Father who sent me
14:51Is truthful
14:51And the things I have heard from him
14:53I speak to the world
14:56They did not understand
14:58That he was telling them
14:59About his Father
15:02Then Jesus said
15:04When you lift up the Son of Man
15:06Then you will know that I am he
15:09And I do nothing of my own initiative
15:11But I speak only what the Father taught me
15:15The one who has sent me is with me
15:17He has not left me alone
15:19Because I always do the things that please him
15:23While he was saying these things
15:25Many people believed in him
15:29This is the word of the Lord
15:32Thanks be to God
15:40This well-known passage
15:42Carries a couple of important lessons for us
15:47First of all there is the issue
15:48Of being tempted to judge others
15:52It is not for us to sit in judgment
15:54On those around us
15:55But what gives us the right to do so
15:59The worst form of judgment
16:01Is of course gossip
16:02And we know that this is completely forbidden
16:05In Christian circles
16:08The issue for us is very simple
16:10We simply do not know the facts of the case
16:15Only God knows all the facts
16:17And most important of all
16:18He knows and understands our motives
16:23Sometimes something really bad can happen
16:26But because of the good intentions
16:28Of the perpetrator
16:31Not only do we not have all the information
16:33But judgment is the prerogative of God himself
16:37For he alone
16:39Has a pure heart
16:40And is without sin
16:43The problem here
16:44In this particular case
16:46Is that not only
16:47Was the woman caught in the act of sin
16:50But her accusers
16:51Were so angry and caught up in the matter
16:53They were lusting for her death
16:58In verse 9
16:59We read that they were conscious
17:01Of what was in their hearts
17:04It is easy for us to get angry
17:06And to forget our principles
17:08Of love, compassion and mercy
17:13In the years before television
17:15Brought the news graphically
17:17Into our living rooms
17:19It used to be a legal principle
17:21In trials
17:22In high profile criminal cases
17:24That they would not be heard
17:26In the region where the crime was committed
17:30This was because it was considered difficult
17:33To find a jury
17:34That was unaware of the hype
17:36And hysteria of the case
17:37And who was a result
17:39Had probably already prejudged
17:42The defendant
17:44Nowadays this is virtually impossible
17:47Anywhere
17:47Because the details are force fed to us
17:50Every few moments
17:52Over the media
17:56Finally
17:57We have the conversation
17:58Between the woman and Jesus
17:59He shows us an insight
18:02Into his boundless mercy
18:04And compassion
18:06Again offering us
18:09An example of how to live
18:10Our own lives
18:13Jesus could see
18:14That the woman had been so scared
18:15That there was no way
18:17She was going back
18:17To her life of sin again
18:20But nevertheless
18:21He gave her a warning
18:22Not to do this
18:25There was no need for him
18:27To sit in judgment over her
18:29For she had already
18:30Sat in judgment over herself
18:32And condemned herself
18:35You could almost hear Jesus
18:37Saying
18:37It's okay
18:38Let's forget all about it
18:41But don't do this again
18:45This is the forgiveness
18:46Of Jesus in action
18:48Forgiveness
18:49Is wiping the record
18:51Clean
18:54There is also
18:56A warning here
18:57Summed up in verse 21
18:59To those who persist
19:00In their stubbornness
19:01Of unbelief
19:03Jesus told the Pharisees
19:05He was about to leave them
19:07And although they would come
19:08Looking for him
19:09They would die in their sin
19:10Because they would not find him
19:15How could this be?
19:16For Jesus told us
19:17That if we seek
19:18We shall find
19:20Matthew 7-7
19:21And Luke 11-9
19:25The problem for the Pharisees
19:27And also for some of us
19:28Is that we have to
19:30Genuinely accept
19:31Just who Jesus is
19:34If we truly accept
19:36Jesus as the Son of God
19:37Then we know where to go
19:38Looking for him
19:41The Pharisees
19:42On the other hand
19:43Refused to accept Jesus
19:45As being the Son of God
19:46And so if they went
19:48Looking for him
19:49As they often did
19:50They would be unable
19:52To find him
19:56Unless we look for Jesus
19:57In the right place
19:58By lifting our eyes
20:00Upwards and towards heaven
20:02We are left looking
20:03Downwards and continue
20:04Our lives of sin
20:08Jesus told the Pharisees
20:09That they could not come
20:10Where he was going
20:12Why?
20:13Because they had not
20:14Accepted him
20:16Unless we accept Jesus
20:17And place him
20:18At the centre of our lives
20:20Constantly looking up
20:22To him in heaven
20:23We will continue
20:24In our sinful state
20:25And be refused entry
20:28The Pharisees were vain
20:30And full of their own importance
20:33To a greater or lesser extent
20:34Many of us today
20:36Suffer from the same problem
20:37And sadly
20:38It can become a block
20:40To their spiritual well-being
20:43If we look to ourselves
20:44And see only what is good
20:46And worldly
20:47How can we ever hope
20:48Hope to see our sin
20:49And the things that are heavenly
20:52Until we accept our sin
20:53And approach Jesus
20:55In genuine humility
20:57We can never even begin
20:58To hope to find him
21:00And invite him into our hearts
21:02Following him home
21:03To the place
21:04He has prepared for us
21:05In heaven
21:11Let us pray
21:14Almighty and most merciful God
21:16Whose only gift comes
21:18That your faithful people
21:20Give you true and laudable service
21:23Grant we beseech you
21:24That we may so faithfully
21:26Serve you in this life
21:27That we will not fail
21:29Finally to attain
21:30Your heavenly promises
21:32Through the merits of Jesus Christ
21:34Our Lord
21:35Amen
21:41May the Lord bless us
21:43And keep us from all evil
21:45Bringing us to everlasting life
21:49Amen
21:50And keep us from all evil
21:50And keep us from all evil
21:50And keep us from all evil
21:51And keep us from all evil
21:53And keep us from all evil
21:53And keep us from all evil
21:54And keep us from all evil
21:54And keep us from all evil
21:54And keep us from all evil
21:54And keep us from all evil
