00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For although Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied with
01:24anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead the greatest of indignity, in the manner of
02:00a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to Herod
02:06and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:18May I never feel any false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness and endure all
02:27things in silence for your honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence, give
02:54me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well-pleasing to you.
02:58Do not permit me to utter hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but
03:05give me grace to say what is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:13May I abhor the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart,
03:41and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of this world.
03:49Pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name,
04:07and may come before you day by day in a true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:17Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who didn't refuse to be set to nothing by Herod and
04:24his men of war,
04:25nor to be clothed in a white garment and to be mocked and laughed at as though a fool and
04:31a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness,
04:54I may be as nothing in my own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over
05:03my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment,
05:12from Herod the Pilate,
05:13and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:36and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy.
05:46Amen.
05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:04O be joyful in the Lord, holy lands, turn the Lord with gladness, and come with all his prayers and
06:16with a song.
06:18O Lord, be sure that the Lord needs God, We are his people and the sheep of his master.
06:37O do your way into this hatred and sin
06:43And into this God with praise
06:49Be thankful unto him and speak full of his name
06:57For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting
07:06As his truth endureth from generation to generation
07:20Glory be to the Father and to the Father and to the Holy Ghost
07:31As it was in the beginning
07:35Is now and ever shall be
07:41World without end
07:49Amen
07:59I know, said thou, I said thou, silent
08:04That thou canst soon be seen
08:09Where art thy goodness of all and to let me see
08:18Eyes of the margin and wickedness
08:23And with lights on clouds like a sharp razor
08:30Thou hast loved the righteousness more than more
08:36And to talk of light more than righteousness
08:44Thou hast loved to speak all worlds unto you that
08:50The one, said thou, I said thou, I said thou, I said thou, I said
08:56Where thou shalt destroy thee for ever
09:00He shall take thee and block thee out of thy tummy
09:06And block thee out of the world on your day

11:44Jesus gave orders to the unclean spirits, and it went out of them, and the boy was made well from
11:50that hour.
11:53Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why were we not able to send it out?
12:00Jesus told them, Because of your little faith.
12:03For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed,
12:07you will say to this mountain, Be moved from this place to that, and it will be moved.
12:11Nothing will be impossible for you.
12:15And while they were going about in Galilee, Jesus said to them,
12:18The Son of Man will be given up into the hands of men.
12:25This is the word of the Lord.
12:27Thanks be to God.
12:37There are two different ideas about the way in which the problems of the world are to be solved.
12:43Of the salvation of the world, whatever it is, is to be brought about.
12:48The secular view looks to man to do it.
12:51Let man go on thinking, inventing, planning, governing, and the results must surely come.
12:58On the other hand, the spiritual looks to God to do it.
13:04Let men lie still, purely, submissive, without a movement or a will,
13:09and God in his good time will bring the happy end.
13:14The first of those two ideas has no faith, and it fails.
13:19But the other also fails.
13:23Man standing aloof and expecting to see God redeem the world sees no such thing.
13:29Then too there is a lack of faith.
13:32Man learns that to simply trust God with the expectation that he will do everything is not faith.
13:40Then in the failure of these two ideas about the world's salvation comes another,
13:45which is distinctly different from either.
13:49Not man alone and not God alone is going to purify the world.
13:54But man and God made one by perfect empathy, by the entire openness of life between them.
14:04The two together.
14:06Nay, the two together are not two.
14:08They are the one which makes the old world into the new world through the driving out of sin.
14:14The principle which makes God and man to be one power is faith.
14:21In Christ there was the fulfilment of that which, when most men try to conceive of what the world needs
14:27most,
14:28is the complete expression of their fullest dreams.
14:31Man in God, God in man.
14:32The divine and human perfectly reconciled, perfectly united.
14:37Not two forces, but one force.
14:41That was the Christ who went from haunt to haunt of the devils.
14:47Driving them out.
14:48And they, the devils of hatred, cruelty, lust, selfishness, brutishness, superstition.
14:54They all fled at the very presence.
14:57And now to fill the earth with himself.
15:00That is his wish and purpose.
15:02That is what he is labouring for through all these slow, discouraging centuries
15:07in which, beneath the turmoil and distress on the surface,
15:11the watchful ear can never fail to hear below the sounds which tell us that he is still at work.
15:17What is the real meaning of his purpose?
15:20Is he not trying to make his brothers what he was,
15:23to assert in them as it was asserted in him,
15:27that it is an incarnation, a God in man, that is to save the world?
15:36There are two things very hard for our moral natures,
15:39and that is most necessary to our happiness.
15:42The one of these is that we should be very much afraid of our sin,
15:47and the other that we should not be afraid of our death.
15:52We know quite well that we ought to be both one and the other.
15:57But this is not enough.
15:59We need to learn how we may become so,
16:03as well as to know that we ought to become so.
16:07And it was for this end that Christ lived and died openly amongst us,
16:11and that the particulars of his death and his life and death were recorded.
16:18He might have borne our nature as truly and died for our sins as truly,
16:23had his life been passed away from the sight of men,
16:26or had he, like Moses, resigned his spirit on the top of some lonely mountain
16:30into the hands of his heavenly Father.
16:33But let me ask you,
16:35how much of that best support of our souls would we have lost had this been the case?
16:44We are not only told briefly that he took our nature upon him,
16:48that he lived upon earth for more than 30 years,
16:52but we are made in a manner the witnesses of his birth,
16:55the companions of his manhood.
16:57We see him forsaken,
17:00we see him insulted,
17:00we see him enduring the extremities of bodily pain.
17:05We see him,
17:06and it is the divinest mercy of all,
17:09suffering the extremity of inward trouble,
17:12of desolation and fear.
17:14We see him in all these situations,
17:17and we see him triumph over them all.
17:20And we hear him,
17:21when all were over,
17:23passed,
17:24giving up his spirit into the hands of God,
17:27to show that in all things we too may be more than conquerors,
17:31through the one that loved us.
17:35The book in which we may read all this is in our hands,
17:39and we can use it when we will.
17:41It hardly matters what particular chapter of the gospel we open,
17:46for Christ's life is in every part of it more or less our pattern.
17:50The readiest way to have our faith so strengthened,
17:53as that it may cast out the evil in our hearts,
17:57is to make ourselves fully acquainted with all the particulars of Christ's character,
18:02life and death.
18:03making his words on every occasion familiar sounding to us,
18:08bringing before our minds his actions,
18:11and imagining,
18:12for surely we may and should try to do so,
18:15his very voice,
18:16and look,
18:18may we bring our souls into constant communion with him.
18:24The ground of faith in God and immortality
18:27is not authority in demonstration,
18:30but in our sense of right.
18:33First,
18:33the very fact of our having a sense of right
18:36makes it probable that God exists.
18:39We do not know where that sense of right comes from.
18:42It is the one thing which the theory of development
18:45has to stop short of.
18:46It is the one thing it cannot give any credible reason for.
18:52It can only be that there is an intelligent will outside of us
18:55who is the source of truth,
18:58a living goodness which does not grow into being in us
19:01through ages of development,
19:03but which has been always and is.
19:09Let us take this sense of right with us
19:11and look at the world around us.
19:15How shall we explain its fear?
19:18There are two theories of the world,
19:20as we have discussed.
19:22The atheistic and the theistic.
19:26We are bound as scientific men
19:28to choose the theory that probably,
19:31truly explains the best,
19:34the greatest number of facts,
19:36which agrees and harmonizes best
19:39with what we have observed.
19:41We find order,
19:43intelligence,
19:45progress to an end,
19:47unity amongst infinite diversity.
19:50And the conclusion is
19:52that it is probable in a very high degree
19:54that there is a thoughtful will
19:57behind and in the universe.
20:01Turning to the spiritual world,
20:04we find existing in ourselves
20:05and in the greater number of mankind,
20:07a whole world of feelings
20:09which belong to this idea of God.
20:12We find,
20:13looking back through history,
20:15that these and similar feelings
20:17existed in all civilized communities.
20:20Even in savage nations,
20:23even before the social ideas took shape,
20:26these existed in some crude form.
20:31Did these ideas develop
20:33out of nothing?
20:34Are they going in the end to nothing?
20:38All my sense of right in matters of feeling
20:40denies that.
20:42I must suppose that someone
20:44who is himself
20:45the feeling source of all this feeling
20:47and who is its end.
20:50Thus, probability is added
20:52to probability in our minds.
20:54And by such addition,
20:55faith is built up.
20:56Built up not out of spiritual feeling only,
20:59but also out of the confessions
21:01of probability,
21:02which the intellectual sense of truth
21:05and the moral sense of right
21:06are induced to make.
21:10We are presented today
21:12with a crisis of confidence
21:13for the disciples.
21:16They had been brought
21:17a young boy to be healed,
21:19but they had been unable
21:20to do so.
21:23After every spiritual high,
21:25we can expect a full broadside attack
21:27from the enemy.
21:28And this is exactly
21:30what was waiting for Jesus,
21:31Peter, James and John
21:32as they returned
21:34to the rest of the fellowship
21:35waiting for them
21:36at the base of the mountain.
21:39Jesus told them
21:40that their faith
21:41was too small
21:43because they had not yet
21:44been filled with the Holy Spirit.
21:46They had not stepped out
21:47in confidence.
21:50Sure, they thought
21:51they could perform the miracle,
21:53but they were not certain
21:55of it.
21:59Very often
21:59I am asked
22:00if I believe in God
22:02and I say no,
22:03I do not believe in God.
22:05I know God.
22:09There is a fundamental difference
22:10between believing something
22:12and knowing something.
22:17waiting at the bus stop
22:18someone might ask me
22:22is there a bus
22:23in a few minutes
22:24to take me into town?
22:28I could say
22:29I believe so
22:32or I could say
22:33yes, there is.
22:36which of those two statements
22:38gives you the most confidence
22:41to know something
22:42or to believe something?
22:46One of the greatest blessings
22:48of the Holy Spirit
22:49is this confidence.
22:50The knowledge that God
22:52is with us
22:52and in his name
22:54we can achieve
22:56the previously unachievable.
23:03Let us pray.
23:06Grant, O Lord,
23:07we beseech you
23:08that the course
23:09of this world
23:10may be so peacefully
23:12ordered by your governors
23:13that your church
23:15may joyfully serve you
23:16in all godly quietness
23:19through Jesus Christ
23:20our Lord.
23:22Amen.
23:27May the Lord bless us
23:29and keep us
23:30from all evil
23:31bringing us
23:33to everlasting life.
23:35Amen.
23:37Amen.
