00:09:53And he took Peter, James and John with him

00:09:56and became very troubled and

00:09:58stressed. He said

00:10:00to them, my soul is deeply grieved

00:10:02even to the point of death.

00:10:04Remain here and stay

00:10:06alert.

00:10:08Going on a little further he threw

00:10:10himself to the ground and prayed that

00:10:12if it were possible

00:10:13the hour would pass from him.

00:10:16He said,

00:10:18Abba, Father, all things

00:10:20are possible for you.

00:10:22Take this cup away from me

00:10:24yet not what I will

00:10:26but what you will.

00:10:28Then he came and found them sleeping

00:10:30and said to Peter, Simon

00:10:32are you sleeping? Couldn't you stay

00:10:34awake for one hour?

00:10:35Stay awake and pray that you will not

00:10:38fall into temptation

00:10:40for the spirit is willing but the flesh

00:10:42is weak.

00:10:45He went away again

00:10:46and prayed the same thing

00:10:47and when he came again

00:10:48he found them sleeping

00:10:50but they could not keep their eyes open

00:10:53but they did not know

00:10:54what to say to him.

00:10:57He came a third time

00:10:58and said to them,

00:10:59Are you still sleeping and resting?

00:11:02Enough of that.

00:11:03Look, the hour has come.

00:11:05The Son of Man is betrayed

00:11:06into the hands of sinners.

00:11:08Get up, let us go.

00:11:09My betrayer is approaching.

00:11:13Right away while Jesus

00:11:14was still speaking

00:11:15Judas, one of the twelve,

00:11:16arrived.

00:11:17With him a cred

00:11:19armed with swords and gloves

00:11:20sent by the chief priests

00:11:22and experts in the law

00:11:23and the elders.

00:11:25Now the betrayer

00:11:27had given them a sign

00:11:28saying,

00:11:29The one I kiss

00:11:30is the man.

00:11:31Arrest him

00:11:32and lead him away

00:11:33after God.

00:11:35When Judas arrived

00:11:37he went up to Jesus

00:11:38immediately

00:11:38and said,

00:11:39Rabbi

00:11:39and kissed him.

00:11:41And then they took hold

00:11:43of him

00:11:43and arrested him.

00:11:45One of the bystanders

00:11:46drew his sword

00:11:47and struck the high priest's

00:11:48slave

00:11:49cutting off his ear.

00:11:51Jesus said to them,

00:11:53Have you come with swords

00:11:54and clubs

00:11:54to arrest me

00:11:55like you would an outlaw?

00:11:57Day after day

00:11:58I was with you

00:11:59teaching in the temple courts

00:12:00and yet you did not

00:12:01arrest me.

00:12:03But this has happened

00:12:04so that the scriptures

00:12:05would be fulfilled.

00:12:09Then all the disciples

00:12:11left him

00:12:11and fled.

00:12:13A young man

00:12:14was following him

00:12:15wearing only a linen cloth.

00:12:17They tried to arrest him

00:12:19but he ran off naked

00:12:20leaving his linen cloth

00:12:22behind.

00:12:24This is the word

00:12:26of the Lord.

00:12:27Thanks be to God.

00:12:35From the very entrance

00:12:36of our Saviour

00:12:37upon his public ministry

00:12:38his life

00:12:40was to be one

00:12:40of continual trial.

00:12:43All along

00:12:44symptoms of the

00:12:45approaching crisis

00:12:46appeared.

00:12:47All along

00:12:48the bitter cup

00:12:48was steadily filling.

00:12:50All along

00:12:51the crowds

00:12:51were gradually

00:12:52gathering.

00:12:53At length

00:12:54toward the close

00:12:56of his career

00:12:56the storm clouds

00:12:57in all their fury

00:12:58burst upon him.

00:13:01After his last

00:13:02entrance into Jerusalem

00:13:03the bitter cup

00:13:04became brimful

00:13:05and he was now

00:13:07to drink

00:13:07and even to drain it

00:13:08to its very trace.

00:13:11The anticipation

00:13:12of these sufferings

00:13:13he was to undergo

00:13:14had made a deep

00:13:15impression on his mind.

00:13:17forebodings of them

00:13:18had frequently

00:13:19disturbed his repose

00:13:21dread of them

00:13:22overwhelmed his spirit.

00:13:24He foresaw all

00:13:26he anticipated all

00:13:27he in a measure

00:13:29tasted all.

00:13:32Accordingly

00:13:35Now I am troubled

00:13:58the circumstances

00:13:59that precede

00:14:00the agony

00:14:00we find that

00:14:01the Wednesday

00:14:02and Thursday

00:14:03before the Passover

00:14:04our Lord himself

00:14:05spent at Bethany

00:14:06while on the latter

00:14:08day his disciples

00:14:09went to Jerusalem

00:14:10to engage

00:14:11in an apartment

00:14:11and prepare the lamb

00:14:13for the coming

00:14:13solemnity.

00:14:15When the evening

00:14:16of the day

00:14:17was come

00:14:17Jesus also

00:14:18went into Jerusalem.

00:14:21Having there

00:14:21joined his disciples

00:14:22he sat down

00:14:23with them

00:14:23to the sacred feast

00:14:25which had been prepared

00:14:26and which he purposed

00:14:28to render still

00:14:29more sacred

00:14:30by enjoining

00:14:31as we have seen

00:14:32the new festival

00:14:33to be observed

00:14:34in remembrance

00:14:35of himself

00:14:36as a memorial

00:14:37of his death

00:14:38and in exhibition

00:14:39of a broken body

00:14:41and bloodshed

00:14:41for many

00:14:42for the remission

00:14:43of sin.

00:14:46were the order

00:14:46and the connection

00:14:47of the events.

00:14:49The Passover

00:14:50had been observed

00:14:51that Passover

00:14:53which he had so

00:14:54earnestly desired

00:14:55to eat

00:14:55with his disciples.

00:14:57The sacrament

00:14:58of the supper

00:14:59had been instituted

00:15:00by our Lord

00:15:01and kept

00:15:02for the first time

00:15:03in the company

00:15:04of his faithful followers.

00:15:07Then he delivered

00:15:08their touching

00:15:09at pathetic

00:15:10yet almost

00:15:11consolatory

00:15:12and truly

00:15:13sublime discourse

00:15:14recorded in the

00:15:1614th, 15th,

00:15:1716th chapters

00:15:18of St John's Gospel.

00:15:21He had poured out

00:15:22from the fullness

00:15:23of his heart

00:15:24the fervent

00:15:25and beautiful prayer

00:15:26contained in the

00:15:2717th chapter

00:15:28of John's Gospel.

00:15:30He warned the disciples

00:15:32against deserting him

00:15:33in the hour

00:15:33of temptation.

00:15:36He selected

00:15:37three of them

00:15:37specially to attend

00:15:39him in his sorrows

00:15:40and then late at night

00:15:41after delivering

00:15:42the discourse

00:15:43and praying the prayer

00:15:44and making the

00:15:44arrangements referred to

00:15:46he left the city

00:15:48for the scene

00:15:48of his agony.

00:15:53The place

00:15:54where this occurred

00:15:54was a spot

00:15:55often frequented

00:16:26was a garden

00:16:27a little more

00:16:28than half a mile

00:16:29from the city

00:16:40had not been laid out

00:16:41for the production

00:16:46The name of the garden

00:16:47as we are given

00:16:48by Matthew

00:16:49and Mark

00:16:50was Gethsemane

00:16:52so called

00:16:53from two words

00:16:54meaning

00:16:54oil press.

00:16:57As suggested

00:16:58it appears

00:16:59to have been

00:16:59a frequent

00:16:59and favourite

00:17:00spot of our

00:17:01Lord and his

00:17:01disciples.

00:17:03He often went

00:17:04and used it

00:17:06as a meeting

00:17:06place with his

00:17:07disciples

00:17:07scattered through

00:17:09the city

00:17:09during the day

00:17:10according to

00:17:11the meaning

00:17:12assigned by some

00:17:13to the term

00:17:14rendezvous.

00:17:17Thither the

00:17:17Savior often

00:17:18retired from

00:17:19the world

00:17:19and to be

00:17:20alone with God.

00:17:22Thither he often

00:17:23went for prayer

00:17:24and meditation.

00:17:25There he often

00:17:26spent the night

00:17:27in intercourse

00:17:28with heaven.

00:17:30There amid the

00:17:31deep gloom

00:17:32of that solitary

00:17:33plantation

00:17:33was the place

00:17:35of the memorable

00:17:35and most effective

00:17:36scene to which

00:17:37this section refers.

00:17:40That garden

00:17:41if tradition

00:17:42has rightly

00:17:43marked the site

00:17:44remains to

00:17:45the present day.

00:17:46The enclosure

00:17:47still stands

00:17:49surrounded by

00:17:50a wall

00:17:50formerly of

00:17:51loose stones

00:17:51but now

00:17:52plastered and

00:17:53whitened

00:17:54and contains

00:17:55eight large

00:17:56and venerable

00:17:56olive trees.

00:17:58Up to the

00:17:59present time

00:18:00it is a gloomy

00:18:01and forsaken

00:18:02place

00:18:02yet from its

00:18:04associations

00:18:04it must ever

00:18:06be to the

00:18:06Christian

00:18:07a sweet and

00:18:07sacred spot.

00:18:09To this day

00:18:11it is a

00:18:11peculiarly

00:18:12sombre

00:18:13as well as

00:18:13solitary place

00:18:14with that

00:18:16rude stone wall

00:18:16enclosure

00:18:17and those

00:18:18grey old

00:18:19olive trees.

00:18:21it was here

00:18:22an event

00:18:23took place

00:18:24the full

00:18:25purpose of

00:18:25which eternity

00:18:26can perhaps

00:18:27alone

00:18:28reveal.

00:18:30In all

00:18:31events for

00:18:32suffering and

00:18:33sorrow

00:18:33it ranks

00:18:35next to the

00:18:35actual crucifixion

00:18:37itself.

00:18:39But as sad

00:18:39and sorrowful

00:18:40as the memories

00:18:41are that are

00:18:42associated with

00:18:43Gethsemane

00:18:43it is invested

00:18:45with a sacredness

00:18:46that makes it

00:18:47unspeakably

00:18:48dear to every

00:18:49Christian heart.

00:18:51Let us imagine

00:18:53ourselves then

00:18:53in that sombre

00:18:55and solemn

00:18:55enclosure on the

00:18:56eve of man's

00:18:57redemption

00:18:58in the company

00:18:59with our Lord

00:19:00and with Peter

00:19:01James and John.

00:19:03These same

00:19:04three have been

00:19:05spectators of

00:19:06the Transfiguration.

00:19:07These same

00:19:08three had stood

00:19:08by while their

00:19:09master restored

00:19:10to life the

00:19:11ruler of the

00:19:11synagogue's

00:19:12daughter.

00:19:13These same

00:19:14three are now

00:19:15privileged to be

00:19:16witnesses of the

00:19:17fearful struggle

00:19:18of our

00:19:19Redeemer's soul

00:19:20called in this

00:19:21passage

00:19:22is agony.

00:19:25And as we

00:19:26stand in that

00:19:27society

00:19:28and on that

00:19:29spot

00:19:29eastward

00:19:30rises high

00:19:31above us

00:19:32the lofty

00:19:33summit

00:19:33of the

00:19:34mantle of

00:19:34olives.

00:19:37Westward

00:20:46It rather

00:20:47means a

00:20:47conflict

00:20:48or struggle.

00:20:49It was

00:20:50the word

00:20:50which the

00:20:51Greeks

00:20:51applied

00:20:52to their

00:20:52games.

00:20:53Thus

00:20:53the runner

00:20:54in the

00:20:54race,

00:20:55the fighter

00:20:56in the

00:20:56combat

00:20:57and the

00:20:57wrestler

00:20:57in the

00:20:58contest

00:20:58were

00:20:59properly

00:21:00said

00:21:00to

00:21:00agonise.

00:21:03Pain

00:21:03connected

00:21:04with the

00:21:05struggle

00:21:05became

00:21:06only

00:21:06as

00:21:07secondary

00:21:11the nature

00:21:12struggle?

00:21:18holy,

00:21:18harmless,

00:21:19undefiled

00:21:20and separate

00:21:20from sin.

00:21:22It was

00:21:23not

00:21:23with the

00:21:24development

00:21:24of any

00:21:24unholy

00:21:25tendency

00:21:25or the

00:21:26uprising

00:21:27of any

00:21:27evil

00:21:28passion

00:21:28from which

00:21:29all such

00:21:30his

00:21:30humanity

00:21:31was

00:21:31exempt.
