00:22Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:29Who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you
00:33Remained alone in the hands of sinful men
00:36Like a most gentle lamb
00:38Within the jaws of a ravenous wolf
00:43Strengthen my excessive weakness
00:45And confirm my too great unstableness
00:47By the support of your grace
00:49And join me to yourself with the bonds of love
00:53That I may neither have no wish nor the power
00:56Ever to depart or separate myself from you
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:04Who allowed yourself to be led around bound
01:07By an armed band and taken to Annas
01:12Allowing yourself to be stood before him
01:14As though you were a common criminal or robber
01:19O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer
01:22Look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward
01:27You uttered not a single word of complaint
01:30Or murmur or word of resistance
01:33But in silence you followed them wherever they led you
01:37Obeying their commands
01:39And permitted their wanton injuries to you
01:44Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me
01:47To the everlasting glory of your name
01:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:54King of heaven and earth
01:55Who in great humility
01:57As poor and needy and of no account
02:00Was stood before the proud High Priest
02:03And most sweetly endure the dreadful blow
02:07Which his impious servant put upon you
02:12Restrain, I beg you
02:13In me all outbreak of anger and passion
02:17Suppress all acts of indignation
02:20And quench within me all desire of revenge
02:24That when I am provoked by injury
02:27I may not be disturbed
02:28I may offer no resistance
02:31May suffer no disquiet
02:34But endure everything with a quiet mind
02:36May I even repay evil with good
02:41Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
02:43Who permitted himself to be led boned
02:46In a shameful manner to Caiaphas
02:48That you might deliver us from the penalty
02:51Of eternal death
02:52Restoring to us true liberty
02:56Make me most ready
02:58To endure every reproach
02:59And all contempt for your name's sake
03:03Grant that in the very middle of ridicule and outrage
03:06I may give you thanks with a perfect heart
03:09And by means of these trials
03:11May grow and increase more and more in your love
03:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:20Who, when three times denied by your Apostle Peter
03:26Mercifully turned and looked upon him with kindness
03:29And brought him to repentance and holy sorrow for his sin
03:33In like manner
03:34May you turn upon me also
03:37Your eye of mercy and love
03:39That I may weep over my past sins
03:42With the tears of true penitence
03:44And may never again commit them
03:47May I never be found sinning
03:49Against your goodness in word or deed
03:54Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:56Who stood before the elders and the people of the Jews
03:59With a calm countenance and humble look
04:02Who did not refuse to be falsely accused
04:05And to suffer many injuries
04:09Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:11Or to falsely accuse my neighbour
04:14But that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:17The calumniers that are heaped upon me
04:21Casting all my troubles upon you
04:23May I always, in silence
04:25Look for the grave and consolation at your hands
04:32Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
04:35Who, when Caiaphas the High Priest
04:38Adjured you by the name of God
04:41Declared the truth
04:42And proclaimed yourself the Son of God
04:44And did not refuse to be counted by him
04:47And the rest who stood by as a blasphemer
04:50May I fully abhor this contempt and defence against you
04:54May I in every place
04:57Reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty
05:03May I think of you
05:04Adore, praise and love you
05:07Above all things
05:08Forever and for ever
05:11Amen
05:15O Lord, open our lips
05:17And our mouths shall sing your praise
05:26O be joyful in the Lord
05:30Lord in hands
05:33Serve the Lord with gladness
05:37And come before his prayers and triggers on
05:43He is sure that the Lord
05:47He is God
05:49This is he that hath made us and not we ourselves
05:55We are his people and the sheep of his master
06:01Who do your way to his grace and pray
06:09And in tune in his cross with praise
06:13Be thankful unto him and speak full of his name
06:21For the Lord is gracious
06:25For the Lord is gracious
06:26His mercy is everlasting
06:31And his truth endureth from generation to generation
06:44Glory be to the Father
06:48And to the Son
06:52And to the Holy Ghost
06:56As it was in the beginning
07:00Is now and ever shall be
07:05World without end
07:13Amen
07:14Amen
07:26Hear my prayer alone
07:29And consider my desire
07:33Father not to be
07:36For thy truth and righteousness sake
07:41And enter voting to judgment with thy servant
07:47For the might's high shall know
07:52And living be justified
07:56For the enemy hath persecuted my soul
08:02He hath smithed my life down to the ground
08:08He hath laid me the darkness
08:12As the men that have become dead
08:17Therefore is my spirit next within me
08:23And my heart within me is desperate
08:30Where do I remember the time past
08:36I use upon all my words
08:42May I exercise myself in the words of thy hands
08:51I stretch forth my hands unto thee
08:57My soul gaspeth unto thee
09:02Where do I remember the time past
09:07Hear me, O Lord, and that soon
09:10Draw my spirit, wax and fate
09:15Hide not thy face from me
09:19Lest I be lying unto them
09:24That go down into the pit
09:28O let me hear thy loving kindness
09:31Be tight in the morning
09:34For in thee is my trust
09:39Show thou be the way that I should walk in
09:44For I lift up my soul
09:48Whom to thee
09:52And walk me down to thee
10:01For I think unto thee to hide thee.
10:09Teach thee to do the thing that pleases thee.
10:13For thou art my God.
10:18Let thy loving spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness.
10:28May them be, O Lord, for thy name's sake, and for thy righteousness's sake, bring my soul out of trouble,
10:42and of thy goodness slay my name amidst, and destroy all them that begs my soul.
10:52For I am thy servant.
11:04Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
11:16As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, and without them shall come.
11:52A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 19.
11:58When he came near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain that is called Olivet, he sent two of his
12:05disciples, saying,
12:07Go your way to the village, and on the other side, in which should you enter, you will find a
12:12colt tied, which no man has ever sat upon.
12:16Untie it and bring it.
12:17If anyone asks you, why are you untying it?
12:20If anyone asks you, why are you untying it?
12:20Say to him, the Lord needs it.
12:23Those who were sent away and found things just as he had told them.
12:30As they untyed the colt, its owner said to them, why are you untying the colt?
12:34They said, the Lord needs it.
12:38They brought it to Jesus.
12:39They threw their cloaks on the colt and set Jesus upon them.
12:44As he went, they spread their cloaks on the road.
12:48As he was now getting near at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples
12:54began to rejoice and praise God,
12:57with a loud voice, for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying,
13:02Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.
13:07Blessed in heaven and glory in the highest.
13:11Some of the Pharisees from the multitude said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples.
13:18He answered them, I tell you that if they were silent, the very stones would cry out.
13:26Now when Jesus approached the city and saw it, he wept over it, saying,
13:31If you had only known of this day even you the things that make for peace.
13:35But now they are hidden from your eyes.
13:38For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you
13:43and surround you and close in on you from every side.
13:47They will demolish you, you and your children within your walls.
13:51And they will not leave one stone within you on top of another.
13:56Because you did not recognise the time of your visitation from God.
14:03Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling things there,
14:08saying to them, It is written, My house is a house of prayer, that you have turned it into a
14:14den of robbers.
14:17Jesus was teaching daily in the temple courts.
14:20The chief priests and the experts in the law, the prominent leaders among the people,
14:24sought to assassinate him.
14:27But they could not find a way to do so, for all the people hung on his very words.
14:34This is the word of the Lord.
14:37Thanks be to God.
14:43Something akin to a royal procession is described here.
14:48On the foal of an ass, on which it comported as well with oriental ideas of honour,
14:54as with Christian ideas of peace that he should writhe,
14:58the king came meek, but not without attention and acclaim into Jerusalem.
15:04A large company of the curious, the devout and even the enthusiastic welcomed him,
15:09as the king that came in the name of the Lord.
15:13At last, thought his disciples, his hour has come.
15:18At last their master was entering on his heritage to assume his kingdom.
15:23At last their long delayed hopes were to be fulfilled.
15:28Gladly, they accepted and sustained the greetings of the multitude,
15:32and fondly, we may be sure, they hoped that a triumphant issue would be at hand.
15:39But it had no such ending as they looked for.
15:42Jesus went into the temple, healed the sick, received the adoration of the children,
15:47whose voices, as weak and well believe, were the last to sink into silence,
15:53and then went quietly back to Bethany.
15:57What then did it mean?
15:59What was the service and significance of the scene?
16:03It was a valuable reminder of his power of self-restraint.
16:08He had been moving amongst men as one that serves, as one that ministered.
16:13He had moved as a very humble traveller along the path of human life.
16:18How easy it would have been for him to call forth the honour of the people,
16:22and to live amid the excitement of popularity and to reach the high places of power.
16:28But this he absolutely declined to do, choosing deliberately the lowlier but more noble path of humble holy service.
16:38It was an indication of his acceptance with the people.
16:44No one can say that Christ's teaching was not profound.
16:48It was as deep as any fountain of truth.
16:52No philosophy went further.
16:54He went down deep into the places of the human soul.
16:58And yet, while the philosophers made their appeal to the culture,
17:02Christ addressed himself to the multitude, to the common human heart.
17:07And all the people were attended to him.
17:12So here, while the men who prided themselves with their knowledge looked on with angry disdain,
17:17the people and their children were enthusiastic in his favour.
17:21They recognised in the prophet of Nazareth the true teacher that had come from God.
17:28Better to be numbered amongst the simple-hearted who can appreciate the divine
17:32than amongst the learned and wise who misread the providence of God
17:37and stand sullen and silent while everyone else is inviting joy and praise.
17:44Better to be the ignorant cottager whose heart is full of respect,
17:48or the little child who has the songs of Zion on his lips and the love of Christ in his
17:54heart,
17:55than the learned critic who never bends the knee or bears the heart in homage to the true and the
18:01eternal.
18:03It was a hint of Christ's true royalty.
18:07The Messiah of the Jews was to be a king.
18:10To that conclusion, prophecy painted with an unfailing finger.
18:15And on that event, Jewish faith rested with gathering food.
18:20The son of David was to occupy his father's throne.
18:23The daughters of Jerusalem were to rejoice because her king was coming.
18:29Claiming the Messiahship, Jesus was bound to claim this sovereignty.
18:34But how to do this without encouraging the current fallacy as to his temporal and visible royalty?
18:42Is not this simple seed the answer?
18:45Christ then and thus said,
18:47I am the king, you are awaiting.
18:50But its extreme simplicity and its transiency showed that he did not intend to wear the trappings
18:56and be surrounded with the common grandiose of earthly royalty.
19:00It showed, instead, that he came not for pomp and pageantry and outward triumph,
19:05but to seek a sovereignty of another kind in another realm altogether.
19:10That very simple and passing regal state was only an emblem of the spiritual sovereignty
19:17which was immeasurably higher and more to be desired.
19:22Sweet to his ear may have been the claim of the populace and the hosannas of the children.
19:28But how much sweeter is the voice of the man or woman or of the little child
19:33who goes in glad submission to his feet, to offer loyal service to their divine Redeemer,
19:40to place heart and life beneath his gracious and benignant sway.
19:47It was a prophecy of far future glory.
19:50Never on this earth will that scene be re-enacted.
19:53But there is an hour coming when, in another realm, it will be amplified and perpetuated.
20:00Christ will be acknowledged King by all the celestial and terrestrial hosts.
20:05The transient gladness of the sacred city will be nothing to the everlasting joy of the new Jerusalem,
20:11the passing enthusiasm of that happy demonstration,
20:15to the abiding blessedness of the life in the heavenly land.
20:20Yet may we take that one hour of Jerusalem's acceptance of her King as a prelude
20:25and as a prophecy of the adoration which the redeemed of every kindred and tribe shall pay him
20:31when they cast their crowns at his feet.
20:37It is not difficult to find the meaning of our Lord in the hyperbolic utterance of his.
20:42Why should I silence my disciples, he says?
20:46Of what use would it be to suppress such strong feelings as theirs?
20:51Feelings will always find vent.
20:54If suppressed in one form, it will express in another.
20:58If driven underground, in one spot it will come up somewhere else.
21:04If these human beings whose stone hearts are so filled with exultation or silence,
21:10the very stones will cry out.
21:13It is useless, indeed worse than useless,
21:18to try to extinguish enthusiasm by a hard, repressive commandment.
21:25The folly of suppression and the wisdom of allowing and inviting,
21:29indeed providing, the means of suitable expression,
21:33will apply to many things.
21:38Curiosity is an irrepressible thing, it will be satisfied.
21:45Age cannot extinguish it, try however it may.
21:49It may have occasion to check it, but its true wisdom is to guide it,
21:54to take the necessary trouble to satisfy it in the best possible way.
21:59Curiosity is not a plant of the evil one,
22:02it is rooted in the soul by the heavenly Father.
22:05It is a main source of knowledge, it ought to be wisely but amply nourished.
22:11If we endeavour to suppress it, we will find that it will not be suppressed,
22:15but will find other ways of satisfaction than those we disallow.
22:21A desire for freedom and independence is a strong sentiment of the human soul.
22:27Where intelligence exists, there it will arise and assert itself.
22:31It will not be put down, it cannot be put out.
22:36Authority may rebuke it, as the Pharisees wanted Christ to act on this occasion.
22:41But the Lord of our nature knows that it will be heard and must be respected.
22:49Neither domestic nor social nor national or ecclesiastical despotism
22:53can survive beyond a certain time.
22:57The aspiration of the human soul for freedom will not be denied.
23:03If not permitted a wise and rightful form of action,
23:07they will take improper and harmful ones.
23:12Philosophy has tried to silence the voice of faith.
23:15It has undertaken to rebuke the disciples and it has temporarily and superficially succeeded.
23:22But it has found that so deep and so strong is the religious sentiment in man
23:27that when religion is driven below the surface,
23:31it comes out again in superstition in some form or another.
23:36The sense of the Supreme, a yearning of the human heart for the living God,
23:41is not to be erased from the soul, is not to be removed from the life of man.
23:51These also are not to be suppressed.
23:53Men have taken very various views of the doctrine of the Christian faith.
23:59And as we know only too well, opponents have not only been rebuked
24:04but tried arrogantly and forcibly to silence those who have differed from them.
24:10But they have not succeeded.
24:12Religious conviction is an inextinguishable force.
24:17Slain in the persons of its champions, it rises again and reappears with a tenfold power.
24:25To the words of our Lord, primarily and most properly apply to this.
24:31Religious fervour may frequently be disposed to take a form which we do not think best,
24:37or even suitable or becoming.
24:39But we must take care how we deal with it.
24:42For it is not a thing that can be suppressed.
24:45It is to be encouraged and enlightened and guided.
24:48It is, or has within it, a true living power.
24:53This power is of God and is for good.
24:57Abruptly or harshly rebuked and silenced,
25:00it will assert itself in other and more questionable forms.
25:03But treated with Christian sympathy and encouragement,
25:07informed and enlightened by superior intelligence,
25:10directed into wise channels,
25:12it will do noble work for the Master and for mankind.
25:17Do not let a young enthusiasm be mindful only of its own exuberance.
25:23Let it be in regard of the judgment and feeling of experience.
25:27And let that experience be tolerant of eager-hearted enthusiasm,
25:31and be prepared to count it amongst its friends.
25:40Descending towards Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives,
25:43Jesus looked out in front and saw the city panorama.
25:49A lesser man would have wept for himself, knowing what lay ahead.
25:53But not so our Lord.
25:55He did not think of himself at this point,
25:58but saw the vision as to what would happen within a generation of his death.
26:04How often can we say that we have wept over someone else's trauma or suffering?
26:10Probably not that often.
26:13And yet, here we read of Jesus brought to tears by the brutality,
26:17the suffering and destruction that he saw in the future.
26:21It had not even happened at this point in history,
26:24but he already felt the pain,
26:26as though it was happening to him right there and then.
26:32The events of this prophecy were to come true in 70 and 71 AD,
26:37when the Roman army lay siege to Jerusalem.
26:41Goaded and taunted by the Jewish garrison,
26:45when the city fell, the Roman soldiers ran out of control,
26:48slaughtering and burning at will.
26:52According to Josephus, the contemporary historian,
26:55there would have been more than one million families in the city at that time,
27:00for it was the Passover and they had come to make their offering.
27:04Nobody was spared.
27:06The temple and its surrounds were raised to the ground,
27:10never to be rebuilt.
27:12The city's destruction was total.
27:15In many ways the Jerusalem of old had it all.
27:19It was populated in the main by the chosen people of God.
27:22It had been given to them as their inheritance
27:25through the long-standing covenant with Abraham and his descendants.
27:29It had enjoyed the benefit of having the prophets to guide its people.
27:34Now it was to host the entry of the Messiah.
27:39However, what had this city, this stubborn people,
27:42done to take advantage of the opportunity?
27:46Nothing.
27:46Nothing.
27:47It was as filled with wickedness and godlessness as any pagan capital.
27:52And within the course of the week,
27:54it would deride and put to death the very one who would come to save them.
27:59Let us, who have the benefit of the Gospel,
28:02make sure we do not live in the heritage of Jerusalem,
28:05but set ourselves apart as truly holy,
28:08showing the world that we belong to the one true God.
28:14The prophet Malachi spoke of a time when the chosen one of God would come upon the temple
28:19as judge, purifier and witness.
28:22And now as Jesus entered Jerusalem in the days before his crucifixion,
28:26this would come to pass.
28:30In Mark 11, we read that on the day Jesus entered the city,
28:34he entered the temple and looked at all that was going on in judgment.
28:41In this short reading from Luke, compared with Mark's account,
28:44we can assume that it must have been the following day
28:46when Jesus entered the temple in anger, in purification.
28:52There is a subtle change in the language used from the previous time he was in the temple.
28:57Or in that case, he referred to the temple as his Father's house.
29:02Here, it is referred to as my house,
29:06as Jesus is now in the city to reveal himself and draw attention upon himself.
29:13It was not so much the fact that animals were for sale,
29:16so that people could make sacrifice that Jesus was so angry about.
29:21For the people who lived in the city would not have had their own animals to offer.
29:25But the fact that these traders, these robber merchants were taking advantage of the people.
29:31They literally had a captive market,
29:33and would probably have been charging obscene prices,
29:36making fat profits from the piety of the people.
29:41This was what was so upsetting to them.
29:45Today, if we take a walk around some of the great pilgrimage sites we have,
29:50we see the same thing in evidence.
29:53The streets are filled with kiosks and shops,
29:56selling what can only really be truly described as junk.
30:00And those that are selling proper and useful things,
30:03can often be charging far more than you would expect to pay elsewhere.
30:09It is this profiteering on the back of people's piety and need that is so very wrong.
30:16Yes, people want to buy these things in these places,
30:20just as they need to buy lambs and doves in Jerusalem.
30:23But let us have modest, fair prices that do not take advantage of the vulnerable.
30:34Let us pray.
30:37O God, whose never-failing providence orders all things, both in heaven and on earth,
30:44we humbly beseech you to put away from us all hurtful things,
30:48and to give us those things which are profitable for us.
30:53Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
31:02May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
31:06bringing us to everlasting life. Amen.
