21:05An expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying,
21:09Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

21:17What is written in the law? How do you understand it?
21:21The expert answered,
21:22Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and
21:27with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.
21:33Jesus said to him,
21:34You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.
21:39But the expert, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus,
21:44But who is my neighbor?
21:47Jesus replied,
22:16But the Samaritan, who was traveling, came to where the injured man was, and when he saw him, he felt
22:22compassion for him.
22:25He went up to him, and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them.
22:31Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
22:37The next day he took out two silver coins, and gave them to the innkeeper, saying,
22:41Take care of him, and whatever else you spend, I will repay you when I come back this way.
22:48Which of these three do you think became a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the
22:53robbers?
22:56The expert in the religious law said,
22:59The one who showed mercy to him.
23:02So Jesus said to him,
23:04Go and do the same.
23:10Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village,
23:13where there was a woman named Martha, who welcomed him as a guest.
23:18She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet,
23:21and listened to what she said, to what he said.
23:25Martha was distracted by all the preparations she had to make.
23:29So she came up to him and said,
23:31Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work alone?
23:35Tell her to go and help me.
23:38The Lord answered her,
23:40Martha, Martha,
23:42you are worried and troubled about many things,
23:45but one thing is needed.
23:47Mary has chosen the best part.
23:50It will not be taken away from her.
23:54This is the word of the Lord.
23:57Thanks be to God.
24:08The story of the Good Samaritan is well known to us all.
24:12The traveller,
24:13who was waylaid by brigands,
24:15and who is left for dead at the side of the road.
24:19The two upstanding officials who pass by
24:21and go out of their way to ignore what they see.
24:26The outcast,
24:27who is led by compassion to help,
24:29and who pays for the victim's recovery.
24:34The story came about as a result of Jesus
24:36being asked who our neighbour was.
24:38For the law requires that we love our neighbour.
24:43In this context,
24:44our neighbour is not the person
24:45who lives next door to us,
24:48but the people we meet as we go about our lives.
24:52The people we have dealings with
24:54are those who appeal to us for help.
24:58The woman on the bus,
25:00the old man in the supermarket.
25:06As Christians,
25:07it is our obligation to treat people
25:09the way that Jesus would have,
25:11with kindness and compassion.
25:14Too often we can scoff at people,
25:16look down at people,
25:17and even feel revolted by people.
25:21This is completely wrong,
25:22and we have to learn to do the opposite.
25:25Everyone is our equal before God,
25:27and everyone is worthy of our love.
25:32If Jesus could love sinners and tax collectors,
25:35then why can't we?
25:38If we can learn this simple secret,
25:41then we will find ourselves loving our neighbour,
25:43as Jesus intended.
25:49From this familiar reading,
25:51I would like to pull some less familiar thoughts
25:53and share them with you.
25:56First of all,
25:57we can read into this account
25:58that Jesus,
25:59even though he was king of kings,
26:01referred poverty to riches.
26:04He had no home of his own.
26:06He was entirely dependent
26:08upon the hospitality of his friends,
26:11one of whom was the Martha of this story.
26:15We can also presume
26:17from the language used in verse 38
26:18that it was the house of Martha,
26:21and that she was probably a widow
26:23with her sister living with her.
26:27Not surprisingly,
26:29Martha was annoyed that Mary was sitting,
26:31listening to what Jesus was saying,
26:33rather than helping with the preparations.
26:37To put this into context,
26:39consider that Jesus travelled
26:40with at least 12 other people,
26:43so a meal for 13 or more
26:45was to be prepared.
26:48That she threw herself into this
26:49wholeheartedly
26:50is to be commended.
26:53But there is an important question for us,
26:56especially for those
26:57of us who are engaged
26:59in working with Jesus.
27:02Is it possible
27:03that sometimes
27:04we become so engrossed
27:06in the work we are doing
27:08for Jesus
27:10that we run the risk
27:11of missing the point
27:12of our ministry?
27:15Here, Martha was so wrapped up
27:17in preparing the meal,
27:18in being the perfect hostess
27:20for her master,
27:21that she had forgotten the point.
27:25Yes,
27:25Jesus had come
27:26for something to eat
27:27and perhaps a place
27:28to stay for the night,
27:30but he had also come
27:31to share the gospel
27:32with his friends.
27:35I'm quite sure
27:36that he would not have minded
27:37waiting a while
27:38to eat
27:39or having a more simple meal,
27:42for he knew
27:43that Martha loved him,
27:44but what he really wanted
27:46was for her to stop
27:47for a few minutes
27:47and to absorb
27:49something of what
27:50he was trying to explain.
27:55The last two verses
27:56of the passage
27:57contain what must be
27:58the shortest sermon
27:59ever delivered.
28:01Even so,
28:02it is a sermon
28:02whose teaching
28:03goes far down
28:04into the truth
28:05of our hope
28:05and faith.
28:07Let us trace it,
28:09first,
28:09in the revelation
28:10made in Christ's word
28:11of the differences
28:12which the heavenly life
28:14comprehends,
28:15and secondly,
28:17in the council
28:17with regard to this life
28:18which Christ's word
28:20conveys.
28:25How interesting
28:26is the sketch
28:26of the two sisters
28:28in the house of Bethany.
28:29They are so lifelike
28:31that we feel
28:31as though we had seen them
28:33and known them.
28:35And indeed,
28:36we have,
28:36because they portray
28:37familiar types
28:38of character and temper.
28:40No person of candour
28:42will regard
28:42the elder sister
28:43as the only
28:44embodiment
28:45of worldly mindedness
28:46in contrast
28:47with the younger
28:48as the embodiment
28:49of spiritual mindedness.
28:52When we look
28:53more closely
28:54at the narrative,
28:55we see the injustice
28:56of this view.
28:59It is Martha
29:00who receives Jesus.
29:02It is she
29:03who provides
29:04for his comfort.
29:06If she is bustling
29:07and busy,
29:08this is only
29:08the sign
29:09of her devotion.
29:11Nor does Jesus
29:12tell us
29:13that in her anxiety
29:15about many things
29:16she had lost
29:17the one thing
29:18needful
29:18and that she had
29:20no share
29:20in the good part
29:21which could not
29:22be taken away.
29:25He is merely
29:26defending Mary
29:27against the temporary
29:28petulence of Martha
29:31and in doing so
29:32and in doing so
29:32he cautions her
29:33against the temptations
29:34incident to her
29:35activity.
29:40Jesus said
29:40to St. John
29:41loved Martha
29:42and her sister
29:43and Lazarus.
29:46Assume then
29:47that each of the two
29:48had a place
29:48in the communion
29:49of saints
29:49and see what
29:51this place is
29:52and how each
29:53is fulfilled
29:54in the other.
29:57The usefulness
29:58of the Martha
29:59character
29:59is at once
30:00suggested.
30:01It hears the
30:02impression
30:03of the liberal
30:03soul
30:04who devises
30:04liberal things
30:06who will take
30:07any amount
30:07of pain
30:08to oblige
30:09who is eager
30:10to serve.
30:11Honour
30:12to those
30:12who have
30:13the readiness
30:13to do
30:14and the lack
30:15of business.
30:16In such
30:17persons
30:18there is generally
30:19a vast amount
30:19of self-denial
30:20and you will find
30:21them toiling
30:22when there might
30:22be any excuse
30:23for resting.
30:25Prompt,
30:26energetic,
30:27shrewd,
30:28they go straight
30:28on,
30:29their activity
30:30being in a high
30:31state of development.
30:35All honour
30:36to the housekeepers.
30:37They enable
30:38the quiet
30:39and thoughtful
30:39to think
30:40and write.
30:42Erasmus
30:43and Melanthorn
30:44can study
30:45while Luther
30:46and Farrell
30:47are up and doing.
30:49The Latons
30:50can preach
30:51for eternity
30:51because the Melvilles
30:53and Hendersons
30:53preach to the time.
30:56The Mary
30:57could not sit
30:58at Jesus' feet
30:59unless the Marthas
31:00were going
31:00about the house.
31:03But the Marys
31:04too
31:04have their place.
31:06Busy people
31:07are often
31:07apt to underrate
31:09them.
31:10They exhibit
31:11something
31:11of the elder
31:12sisters'
31:13impatience.
31:14We are left
31:15to do it all.
31:15These dreamers
31:16do not help.
31:18Not help.
31:19It is Mary
31:20who sees
31:21into the truth
31:21of Jesus'
31:22sacrifice.
31:23It is she
31:24who,
31:25sitting and
31:25listening,
31:26divines the joy
31:27and the sorrow
31:28which meet
31:28in the heart
31:29of the Lord.
31:31By and by,
31:32when Martha
31:32makes a feast,
31:33she feels
31:34that the hour
31:35has come
31:35and she brings
31:37the alabaster
31:37box of ointment
31:38which she has
31:39been keeping
31:39for that hour.
31:42Against the day
31:43of my burying,
31:44says Christ,
31:44she has kept
31:45this box.
31:47This that she
31:48has done
31:48shall be spoken
31:49out for a memorial
31:51offer.
31:52The prophetic
31:54spirit belongs
31:55to the meditated.
31:57Martha is the
31:58worker but
31:59Mary is the
31:59seer.
32:02So the
32:03conclusion
32:03therefore is
32:04that the
32:04Marthas and
32:05the Marys
32:05abide together
32:06in peace
32:07and mutual
32:08self-respect.
32:09That the
32:10world of
32:10action and
32:10the world
32:11of letters
32:11recognise
32:12each in the
32:13other,
32:13the balancing,
32:15completing path.
32:17God has
32:17created minds
32:18male and
32:19female,
32:20the active
32:20and the
32:20contemplative,
32:21the communicative
32:22and the
32:23receptive,
32:23the objective
32:24and the
32:25subjective.
32:26The church
32:27of Christ,
32:28the progress
32:29of humanity
32:29demands both.
32:31If one is
32:32the guide,
32:33the other
32:33is the
32:33inspirer
32:34of movement
32:35and for
32:37permanent effect
32:38as well as
32:39for the
32:39discovery of
32:40truth.
32:41The Johns
32:42outrun the
32:43Peters.
32:44Let each
32:45person ascertain
32:46which of the
32:47two sides
32:47is predominant
32:48in him
32:49and seek
32:50the balance
32:50supplied by
32:51the other.
32:53Whoever is
32:54Martha-like
32:55should cultivate

32:56temperament.
32:57Unless he
32:58sits at
32:59Jesus'

35:46the bother

35:48The serving
35:49impeding the
35:50movement
35:50heavenward
35:51as a
35:52heavenly
35:52garment
35:53impedes
35:54the one
35:54who runs
35:55in a
35:55race.
35:57The many
35:57things run
35:58away with
35:59both the
35:59peace and
35:59the strength
36:00of the
36:00mind.

36:02not absolutely
