00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust

03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own

03:49Pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.

20:04A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 23.
21:01There were also others, two criminals, led with him to be put to death.
21:06When they came to the place that is called the Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one to
21:13the right and one to the left.
21:16Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.
21:23Dividing his garments amongst them, they cast lots.
21:27The people stood and watched.
21:29The rulers with them also scoffed at him, saying, He saved others, let him save himself, if this is the
21:36Christ of God, his chosen one.
21:40The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar, saying, If you are king of the Jews,
21:47save yourself.
21:50An inscription was also written above him, in letters of Greek, Latin and Hebrew, This is the king of the
21:57Jews.
22:01One of the criminals, who is hanged with him, insulted him, saying, If you are the Christ, save yourself and
22:09us.
22:11But the other answered, rebuking him, saying, Don't you even fear God, saying that you are under the same condemnation?
22:20And we, justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.
22:28He said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
22:34Jesus said to him, Most assuredly, I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.
22:43It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.
22:50The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
22:56Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
23:03And having said this, he breathed his lust.
23:08When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

23:26All his acquaintances and the women who followed him from Galilee stood at the distance, watching these things.
23:35This is the word of the Lord.
23:38Thanks be to God.
23:48We have today in the opening verses of this passage, two lessons.
23:54The first is the right and the wrong view of Christ's passion.
23:58Weep not over me, but weep for yourselves.
24:03These women were indulging the emotion, the sentiment, the luxury of weeping.
24:09They wept, as all that is human in us does, at the sight of pain, at the spectacle of sorrow,
24:17at the unchecked march of death.
24:20But their weeping was misapplied.
24:24As a merely natural expression of sorrow, it was out of place.
24:29There was something in that spectacle above, beyond and beside the mark of pity.
24:35There was something in that death which was in danger of being obscured,
24:40and being lost sight of, if it was going to be wept over.
24:46If they could not see the death in a higher light than pity, then they had better turn their weeping
24:51another way.
24:52They had better anticipate a terrific future which would claim a monopoly of tears for themselves and for their children.
25:01Though these things are our examples, they were written for our benefit.
25:07The passion of our Lord is not in itself a thing for tears.
25:10He himself, long centuries ago, went back into heaven of his holiness and of his glory.
25:17To weep after him, year after year, as these daughters of Jerusalem wept too, is too much or too little.
25:28He needs not, asks not, nor accepts our compassion.
25:35If these things are done in the green tree, what must happen in the dry?
25:40If he knew who knew no sin suffered in this way, then how much more the wicked and the sinner?
25:49The sufferings of Jesus Christ say to us, see, look what sin is, by seeing the sinless suffer for it.
25:57If the green tree burnt as it burns on Calvary, in misery, anguish, and in hiding under God's countenance, and
26:07the very dying under that cloak.
26:10If these things were done in the green tree, if these things were done in the green tree, how would
26:13it be in the dry?
26:15How shall anyone escape the confrobation, who is his right fuel for it?
26:22How shall he escape the everlasting burnings, who has here despised the riches of God's goodness, and forbearance, and longsuffering,
26:32and treasured up for himself wrath in a day of wrath?
26:43We read that Jesus prayed.
26:47It is something to be capable of prayer in acute anguish of body.
26:52But he prays not for himself, that is more.
26:56A cry for pity, for relief, for mitigation, for death, a cry of patience, for faith, for grace, for heaven,
27:03this might be.
27:05But to forget self altogether, in suffering, to think of others, and to use that breath of life, each gasp
27:12of which is torture, in prayer for another life or another soul.
27:17This is not of the manner of men, but it is the prayer of Christ.
27:24Once again, to think even then, of some loving and beloved one, some life next to our own, and to
27:30pray for its welfare, and its salvation.
27:34This too might be, might just be.
27:38Jesus prays for his enemies, for his murderers, for his crucifiers.
27:43He prays and inspires the prayer.
27:46The first master, Stephen, prayed it after him.
27:49Lord, do not lay this sin to their charge.
27:58Inventive love, it has been written, makes ignorance a plea for mercy.
28:04These rude executioners, the direct objects of the intercession, might not the sufferer have arraigned them for that ignorance which
28:13was doing despite to God himself.
28:17In the display of every hateful characteristic of the fallen and sinful nature.
28:26Evidently, the ignorance is no innocence.
28:28Else, why the prayer, forgive them?
28:32St. Paul's ignorance was no innocence, for he speaks of himself in the same breath.
28:38Thus, needing mercy, and mercy is, by definition, kindness to the sinful.
28:45We see in all this the exceeding love, the self-forgetfulness of Jesus Christ.
28:53His considerateness, stronger than death, even prevalent because of death, toward men who pierce him.
29:02His unprovoked nature by slight or insult.
29:06His far-seeing hope for the ungrateful and the evil.
29:11He looks to the end, the eventual state, the eternity to be lived through.
29:17Let him see of the travail of his soul, in that one case over which you alone have control, your
29:24own.
29:25It has been written, one day I wear you well, but sooner or later you must come at last to
29:32the place of a skull.
29:35Let it be to that Golgava, where Christ gave himself to be life from the dead.
29:44Let us take a look at the circumstances of this prayer.
29:49They were surely as unpropitious as any in which a heavy-laden sinner ever sought the Lord.
29:56How terribly short is the time he has left to devote to the business of eternity.
30:03Think, then, how hard it must have been to fix his thoughts and to raise them upward at such a
30:09time.
30:11In no case is a deathbed scene the fittest place for serious thought and breath, and his was no ordinary
30:18deathbed.
30:20But even then his mind was clear and his spirit strong.
30:26The urgent demand of his suffering body did not hinder the upward aspiring of his soul.
30:34Let no one then throw on his circumstances the blame of the neglect of his soul's concerns, which is all
30:41his own.
30:43The spirit that is truly in earnest will press through all these obstacles.
30:51Not only did hell lie all about him, but close at his side, vexing his soul with impious blasphemies,
30:58and almost shredding from view the blessed form on which he is striving to fix his eye, in a cloud
31:06of scorn.
31:09Yet even these adverse circumstances were turned, through the mighty power of grace, into an instrument of good.
31:20He is not satisfied with merely rebuking his companion's blasphemies.
31:25He happens to cast himself at the Saviour's feet whom he'd last been.
31:35Let us look at the nature of the prayer of the sinner.
31:40We notice its brevity.
31:42Such prayers are the soul's swift arrows, glowing sparks thrown off from the burning heat,
31:49gleaming for a moment and then vanishing out of sight.
31:54If the words are few, how pregnant and vast is the sense!
31:59It was an act of worship.
32:02Lord, remember me!
32:05It was an act of supplication.
32:07And as such, how all embrace him.
32:11Lord, remember me!
32:14What needed blessing, what conceivable work and gift of divine grace is not included in it.
32:23And look at the success of this prayer.
32:25How prompt, how immediate was the Saviour's reply to the cry of the penitent thief!
32:32No sooner is the prayer offered than it is answered.
32:36While he is yet speaking, the Redeemer hears.
32:40He is in haste to meet the returning prodigal,
32:43and to present him with the blessings of his goodness,
32:47the seals of his pardoning love.
32:54Let us pray.
32:57Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants,
33:03that they may obtain their petitions, make them ask such things as will please you.
33:09Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
33:18May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil, bringing us to everlasting life. Amen.
