12:21If you do these things, reveal yourself to the words, to the world, for even his brothers didn't believe him.

14:04But he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

15:12The general principle affirmed in this text today is that there is an unauthorable connection
15:19between the perceptions of the mind and the moral state of the heart.
15:23Between the understanding of truth and the practice of godliness.
15:28In other words, that spiritual intelligence grows as proficiency in spiritual practice grows.
15:36And that's, all other things being equal.
15:40Even under circumstances of the most unfavourable intellectual disparity.
15:45Man will have the clearest, fullest, richest, deepest insight into divine things.
15:51Whose will is most obediently and deeply fashioned according to the will of God.
16:01This text holds good.
16:03Because a life of true obedience to the divine is most favourable to the operation of those
16:10thinking and feeling facilities, in and through which the knowledge of God reaches the soul.
16:18Religion, we must remember, addresses itself to the whole nature of man.
16:24That is, to the part of his intellectual, moral and spiritual being.
16:31No man could know the doctrine, whose whole life was consciously opposed to the will of God.
16:36For he is determined not to know it.
16:39He has raised as many obstacles as he can, in the way of knowing it.
16:44Used, for this reason, as far as he has used it, to sustain a false and foregone conclusion.
16:51Putting out his own eyes, in order that he may be in a position to say,
16:56I cannot see.
17:00But the principle of our text today, goes much further than this.
17:06Not only will a life opposed to the will of God raise up influences unfavourable to the reception of divine
17:13truth.
17:14But a life which is according to that will, or which tries to be according to it,
17:20shall be blessed with a particular and special measure of religious knowledge.
17:26An understanding hid from the wise and prudence of the deep things of God.
17:33Obedience strengthens love.
17:36And love induces likeness, and likeness is that which leads to the most perfect knowledge.
17:43Indeed, it is the very means by which, in our glorified state, we are to have a true vision of
17:49God.
17:51The steps, or processes of knowledge, are unbroken.
17:55We pass from light to light, from glory to glory, from a comprehending with all the saints,
18:01what is the breadth and length and depth and height,
18:05to a state in which, with the strong eagle gaze of our resurrection facilities,
18:11we see God face to face.
18:16Are we to judge men according to the appearance of their life?
18:20There is a general social judgment which we must give.
18:24We look upon the man's outer life and pass a sentence on it,
18:28either of praise or blame,
18:30and so far as appearance goes, that sentence may be just,
18:35as long as the matters it judges are within the sphere of the broad lines of right or wrong.
18:42But in other matters it may be quite unjust.
18:47The human heart is hidden from us,
18:49and out of that alone can be drawn the materials for a righteous judgment of the lives of men.
18:58Again, you are forbidden to judge the whole of a man's life from the result of his acts upon his
19:04own life.
19:05That is the way in which the world, while the man is alive, judges,
19:09and it is almost always wrong.
19:13We thank God that in the life of the Son of God,
19:16in the central life of history,
19:18a divine and eternal contradiction has been given to the world's lie.
19:24That obloquy and slander, suffering and poverty, shame and death,
19:30are any proof that a man's life is base or foolish or degraded.
19:35It is emblazoned on the walls of heaven and on earth by the death of Christ,
19:40that the prosperous are not always right,
19:43and the sufferer is not always wrong.
19:48Again, you cannot judge a man's character according to the appearance of any single act.
19:55You must know the man before you can blame or praise him for the act.
19:58You must know the circumstances which preceded it,
20:02and the many motives which entered into every act,
20:05the sum of which created it,
20:08before you can truly judge the man from the action.
20:14On the whole, we have scarcely any right to judge at all,
20:18because we know about nothing but the appearance.
20:22When we know more than we may with diffidence judge,
20:25but for the most part,
20:27we have no business to make the judgment,
20:30unless it happens to be a judgment of love.
20:35Still, after some long experience,
20:38a long labour towards certain qualities,
20:41we may attain some power of judging correctly.
20:45The first of these is to love men as Christ loved them,
20:49through our loss of ourselves,
20:52and the other qualities are secured by love.
20:55For with love comes patience and freedom from prejudice.
21:00These qualities are modes of love.
21:02And in truth, love includes all we need
21:05for judging righteously all men.
21:09Jesus highlighted how superficial
21:11the judgments and attitude of the Jews were.
21:16On the one hand,
21:17it was fine to do some things on the Sabbath,
21:20but not on others.
21:23Despite the fact that some things might be urgent,
21:27such as healing a sick person,
21:31we should try to avoid becoming set in our ways.
21:34Yes, we need to have rules to govern our relationship
21:37with God and our brothers.
21:39But if there is no love or compassion,
21:41what good are all the rules in the world?
21:45Indeed, without love or compassion,
21:47what possible use or good are we?
21:55Let us pray.
21:58Almighty and most merciful God,
22:00whose only gift comes that your faithful people
22:03give you true and laudable service,
22:06grant, we beseech you,
22:08that we may so faithfully serve you in this life
22:11that we will not fail finally
22:13to attain your heavenly promises
22:15through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
22:19Amen.
22:25May the Lord bless us
22:27and keep us from all evil,
22:29bringing us to everlasting life.
22:33Amen.
