00:00When it comes to Deshaun getting out there and speaking today,
00:05is it better late than never?
00:06Sure.
00:06It's been 20 months.
00:07It's been long enough.
00:08But the idea was is that we had to hear him.
00:11And Jake, he's got to get comfortable.
00:12If he's going to be quarterback one and he's had a bad day already today,
00:15but if he's going to be QB one,
00:17he's got to get comfortable again speaking in front of the media and doing
00:20this because you have to.
00:21You are NFL obligated to do it once a week during the season.
00:25Yeah, he's absolutely got to be comfortable.
00:26What if all the fun of this, he ends up,
00:29but you've been prefacing this throughout the beginning of the show.
00:32Don't expect anything groundbreaking.
00:33He just drops a bomb.
00:34He's like, actually, I tore my Achilles a third time.
00:37I'm out of the race.
00:40It'd be weird considering he's throwing reps with the ones today.
00:43It would be odd.
00:43That'd be an interesting development.
00:45I don't think it'll be that.
00:46What if he does?
00:46What if he drops a groundbreaking thing on you?
00:48What would be groundbreaking from Deshaun?
00:50See, that's the problem.
00:51Find me the groundbreaking because he practiced today,
00:54so we know he's not going to say I'm retiring from the NFL effective right now.
00:57So, like, what is the groundbreaking thing that Deshaun could say?
01:02I mean, I guess if he addressed the boos last time he was on the field,
01:05he could say something that is not groundbreaking,
01:07but he could say something shocking that he probably wouldn't expect him to say.
01:10I'm not expecting much, but I'm going to let you guys know that's not the point.
01:14The point is you can't hide, and you can't let the Browns protect you that way.
01:19And it's just a maddening thing that they threw Shador and Dylan out there and said,
01:23yeah, go talk to the media.
01:25And for Deshaun, it was simply, well, hey, we'll catch you when we catch you.
01:29And then they had all sorts of different media people tweeting out, like,
01:33we don't have to get everybody all at once.
01:35No, no, that's not the point, guys.
01:37That's not the point that I was trying to make.
01:40The point I was trying to make is if you're going to be the franchise quarterback,
01:43you have to speak.
01:44And you have to speak in those type of moments and those type of settings.
01:47That is not an unconventional ask to when you throw out all the quarterbacks
01:51to have Deshaun out there as well.
01:52So he's going to speak today, and that's the important part of this.
01:55Well, I think the idea of the Browns, and this is a protection moment,
01:59but the hope is that he would have played well in the beginning part of training camp,
02:03looked really good up until the point where he does speak.
02:05And then you're hoping that you probably get more positive conversations,
02:08positive questions his way,
02:10rather than maybe some of the negative ones that follow about the questions
02:13about him this year.
02:15If he just looked awesome, it might be like,
02:16hey, I mean, you've looked really good so far.
02:18Like, you might get more of those than, I mean,
02:21if Deshaun's out there throwing picks in, you know,
02:24in mandatory mini camp,
02:25I don't know that all the questions today are going to be very positive.
02:28Well, and here's where I put on my dark hat, okay,
02:30where I play the villain role a little bit.
02:32But if I was the Browns and I was setting this thing up for Deshaun,
02:36and then Deshaun was playing great,
02:38and Deshaun said, I don't want to do this yet,
02:40they wouldn't have him speak right now.
02:42They just wouldn't, because they didn't do it before.
02:44So the idea that they're throwing Deshaun out there,
02:47even when he's not looking good,
02:48picked off in practices today,
02:49and the momentum over the previous week and a half
02:51is suggesting that Shador Sanders is taking some,
02:54you know, a stranglehold on this.
02:56Well, maybe it's the Browns saying,
02:57we can't protect you anymore, we're not going to.
02:59I don't know, I don't know.
03:00But the reality is that if you're going to be the franchise quarterback,
03:03you have to speak, and he's speaking today.
03:05It only took him 20 months now,
03:06but now we're going to have some words out of Deshaun,
03:08and that happens this hour.
03:092-1-6-4-7-4-0-92.
03:12So Andrew Barry went on this podcast with Peter Schrager,
03:15and this does not mean that Andrew Barry
03:17is all of a sudden going to go on a bunch of national podcasts
03:20and do a bunch of this.
03:22But you mentioned earlier in the show
03:23the idea that last year we just never heard from Andrew Barry.
03:27And I think it was like twice all of last season,
03:30somewhere in that range.
03:31It was not a lot of times.
03:32He kind of removed himself from the public eye in many respects.
03:35And now you fast forward, he's had two really strong drafts.
03:39The team pulled off a trade involving Myles Garrett
03:43where he got people giving him kudos
03:45and flowers thrown at his feet left and right.
03:48And I just don't think it's an accident
03:49that now all of a sudden Andrew Barry
03:50wants to get out there and do national podcasts.
03:53It's definitely not an accident.
03:54I can tell you that much.
03:55It's very, I mean, Andrew gets to essentially pick
03:59when he wants to talk.
04:00He's a general manager.
04:00He has very few moments where it's dedicated of
04:03you have to show up today.
04:04I mean, yeah, I'd rather talk to the media
04:07when things are going well than when they're going bad.
04:09Unfortunately, as a general manager,
04:11you should be talking to the media at all times
04:13because that's part of your job.
04:14You're the one making the decision, setting up the team.
04:16But this is part of that bigger theme
04:17in that he was allowed to just kind of disappear and go away.
04:21And now when things seem like they're headed
04:22in the right direction for Andrew Barry,
04:24which is surprising because it's not like Vegas
04:26has projected us to win a lot of games this year,
04:28but things are going well for him.
04:30From a front-facing perspective,
04:33people believe in Andrew Barry as a GM.
04:34They think that he's a good GM.
04:36They think he's at least a good drafter.
04:38And they think that he's got this thing
04:39turned around in the right direction.
04:40And all of a sudden, he's popping up on podcasts.
04:42All of a sudden, he's talking with Peter Schrager
04:44and doing 40-minute sit-down interviews.
04:47This just isn't what we got previously.
04:49And I'm all right.
04:50Listen, I got no problems with Andrew Barry doing it.
04:53I'd prefer him to do it than not do it.
04:55The timing of it, though, we have to acknowledge.
04:57The idea that now when things are started
04:59to be heading in the right direction,
05:01Andrew Barry, like a groundhog,
05:02wants to pop out and all of a sudden show his face.
05:04Yeah, because, and listen, like you said,
05:06I don't think him being out in the media
05:09is like a bad thing.
05:10I'd much rather hear more from Andrew Barry than less.
05:12Not only for us, because it gives us more things
05:14to talk about, but also, as a fan,
05:16I'd like to know what his thought process is,
05:18what's constantly going through his mind,
05:19anything he's thinking.
05:20But again, you think about the questions he's asked.
05:23I mean, in this interview with Peter Schrager
05:24and questions that come up, it's,
05:26hey, you've had two really good draft classes,
05:27the guys you're excited about,
05:28guys that played well last year,
05:30trading Miles Garrett,
05:31which is now viewed as a positive
05:32based on the return that you got.
05:34If you would have stepped in front of the media
05:35at the trade deadline last year,
05:37I mean, half the conversations we were having was,
05:39he was essentially pulling the rug out
05:41from Kevin Stefanski and being like,
05:43oh, you want to play Joe Flacco?
05:44You might go back to him.
05:46Shador might not get a shot.
05:47You might not play the young quarterbacks.
05:48Guess what?
05:49You don't have that opportunity.
05:50He got money-balled.
05:51Like Kevin Stefanski got money-balled last year.
05:53He got money-balled?
05:54Well, we all got money-balled.
05:55Deep Odesta, thank you for that.
05:56This is true.
05:57I just, I don't know.
05:58I don't know if he was scared of Stefanski questions
06:00or if that's kind of what was hanging in there.
06:02I really don't know.
06:03I don't know if he had to have a personal relationship
06:06with Schrager, and so that's why he's doing that.
06:08I don't know.
06:09I just know that we didn't sear from him much,
06:12and now all of a sudden,
06:13in the span of even just a week and a half
06:15after pulling off this trade,
06:16it now feels like Andrew Barry's in a lot of places.
06:18And again, I don't hate this.
06:20One takeaway I had from listening to this,
06:22and we'll get into more of the clips,
06:23and we'll play, we played some in the first hour
06:25for Yodesty Rewind about Deshaun and Chador
06:27that Andrew Barry was talking about is,
06:29I was like, this is awesome.
06:31And not that, and listen, I'm not being like,
06:33go listen to it right now for a couple reasons.
06:35One, we have a big hour coming up.
06:36You don't need to go anywhere.
06:38You'll probably end up being bored by it
06:39more than you were entertained by it.
06:41I found a lot of myself being bored
06:42by Andrew Barry discussing things.
06:45His breakdown of the finals was
06:48like a little too in-depth for me,
06:50if I'm being honest.
06:51Oh, all right.
06:51So he's got big breakdowns.
06:53A little too in-depth.
06:54Okay.
06:54I thought his roster knowledge of the Knicks,
06:56a little too good for what I want
06:59out of my GM of a football team.
07:01He was talking to Sam Presti.
07:02I don't know if you know this about me or not, though.
07:04I'm also the guy that,
07:05I like coaches that have no life.
07:08If you're going to be a coach of my football team,
07:10I want you to basically be the coach
07:12that'll tell me you spend 15 minutes with your kid a week.
07:14Kind of like the guy that just won the Super Bowl
07:16in Seattle said, okay?
07:17Like, that's my type of coach
07:19because I don't care if you have
07:20a good balance relationship in your life.
07:22I want you to coach my football team.
07:23I want you to be obsessive about football.
07:25And so Andrew Barry, you know,
07:27doing a little bit too much basketball knowledge in there.
07:29I was like, this is seven minutes too long
07:31in the NBA finals.
07:32And you're going deep into why Jalen Brunson
07:34is actually pulling it off as a 6-2 guard.
07:37I got a little too in-depth for me.
07:38But I loved the actual, the stuff that Andrew Barry
07:42gave Peter Schrager as far as his personality was concerned,
07:45I thought was about as good as I've ever heard
07:48from Andrew Barry.
07:49Like, that's the type of stuff that,
07:50it just goes a long way with fans
07:52when you seem like a real person.
07:54You know, Schrager referenced him
07:56with Pat McAfee at one point
07:57and how McAfee had talked about Andrew Barry
08:00sleeping in the offices in Indianapolis
08:03when he was coming up in football.
08:05And Andrew Barry talking about
08:06what a problematic that thing.
08:07Like, that's not good.
08:08We shouldn't have been doing that.
08:09But obviously, it's what he had to do at the time.
08:12He told a great story
08:13about talking to the chaplain
08:15involved with the Colts
08:16and telling him that he went to Harvard
08:18and the chaplain looking at him
08:19and being like,
08:20why are you here then?
08:22You know, and like some of that stuff,
08:23I just, I love.
08:24You don't hear those type of stories.
08:26There's like seven stories
08:27I've never heard of with Andrew Barry.
08:28And we're year seven into this.
08:30It shouldn't have taken this long.
08:31No, but I think that's the Andrew Barry we get.
08:33Like, I mean, so much of what we get out of Andrew Barry
08:36feels like the conversations about,
08:37you know, what we got out of Kevin Stefanski.
08:39It was, I mean, Kevin would jump on the station
08:42and you could tell he had a personality.
08:43He liked to crack jokes.
08:44Yeah.
08:44There was a real person inside there.
08:46But as soon as you set him up
08:47to talk as, you know,
08:49for the Browns in front of a podium,
08:50it was nothing but that we're going to get that fixed.
08:53Is this the Munkin effect on Andrew Barry?
08:55Maybe a little.
08:56I mean,
08:57Are we loosening up the ties over there in Berea?
08:59Are we all of a sudden letting the hair down a little bit?
09:02I mean, we definitely got personality out of Todd Munkin.
09:04It's got to loosen everybody up a little.
09:05Like, I still think.
09:06I actually thought Munkin was going the other way.
09:07I thought Munkin was kind of morphing into them.
09:10There's probably a little bit of both, right?
09:11Like, they're probably blurring the line
09:12somewhere in the middle of like,
09:13hey, Todd, maybe you got to pull it back a little bit.
09:15And Todd being like,
09:16well, maybe you got to pull it up a little bit.
09:17Like, we can't just be sitting there
09:19and give him nothing.
09:20You do end up becoming, you know,
09:22the five people you spend the most time with.
