00:00that brian baldinger who is the odyssey nfl analyst do you kind of laugh when you hear
00:05basketball guys talk about physicality when you come from the sport of football
00:12uh i do a little bit but i have um back in the day played on the same court as
00:19some of these
00:19nba players and their elbows are sharp and they do possess a lot of power and uh they are fast
00:26so there is something about if you were going to low post with lebron um you know that that might
00:33uh
00:33that might qualify as being pretty physical all right baldy uh you i i'm guessing if you're like
00:42everybody else you looked at what the browns were able to pull off in a draft that we were told
00:46was
00:47not going to be anything special and yet a lot of guys that were mocked in the first round at
00:51one
00:51point the browns end up getting four of these dudes somehow thanks to andrew barry what did
00:58you think in totality of how they did i thought uh andrew barry for the second year in a row
01:04was
01:04pretty surgical uh you know to trade back with kansas city uh to take offers from dallas uh but
01:10to get the guy that they wanted which was funnell to go right to left tackle and uh you know
01:15compete
01:15and take that and then you know can casey conception honestly like i thought he was kind
01:21of a gadget guy but the more he studied the more you realize you know he's just a really good
01:27football
01:27player and denzel boston a lot of people had him as the fourth or fifth receiver um emmanuel mcneil
01:34warren people had him you know for most of uh the whole process as the second or third best safety
01:39so i mean you can go on and on and on but i i thought he you know last year
01:43he crushed it i thought
01:44uh there's many six you know rookies play including you know carson schwestinger who's
01:50the defensive rookie of the year i mean i thought for the second year in a row they've really upgraded
01:54the talent of this roster baldy with with fano we heard so much in the pre-trap process about
02:01the arm length thing and he was trying out and working out for teams i should say at different
02:06positions including center uh he came here and emphatically said he doesn't think that matters
02:12for him because he's athletic enough that he can play the position regardless and play tackle
02:17regardless but do you think we make too big of a deal out of the arm length part of this
02:22when it
02:23comes to deciding before they even get a chance to play whether or not they can they can make it
02:29at
02:29tackle at the in the nfl level yes i do i i mean we only started hearing it really in
02:35the last four or
02:36five years and um i don't ever i don't i have no way i played for 13 years i have
02:42no idea how long
02:43my arms are i have you know i have never i have never even thought about it i've had shirts
02:48you know
02:48measured and um you know some clothes made but i still don't even know what the tailors uh told me
02:55what my arms are like i i just think we were you know i mean how high a guy jumps
03:00you know or how long
03:01his arms are like i i don't know like i i don't know what any of it means like you
03:07can just watch
03:08spencer play and you know like that guy's a great athlete you know he stays on his feet he can
03:13change
03:13direction you know it looks like he could put 20 pounds on you wouldn't even know it you know the
03:18way his frame is like i just i think yes to answer your question yes i think we make way
03:23too much of
03:24it and you could tell me well you know in the 65th percentile of guys with 33 inch arms or
03:31less
03:31you know they just don't all right fine but like let's let to your point let's let him go
03:36play let's let him go up against you know the best defensive player in this league every day see how
03:42he
03:42does like guys like me that since i'm not exactly studying the film i listen to the people that talk
03:48about floors and ceilings and then we assess value to that in the draft and i'm guessing you're very
03:53different someone like you who's studying the way they move and their their body type you might have
04:00a different sense of this but the only thing they said about spencer that's bad is that all right he
04:06has a limited ceiling but a very high floor is that something you would ever sign off on or do
04:13you
04:13think that's silly to put any kind of a ceiling on any of these prospects yeah no i i i
04:18don't want
04:19to put any limits on these guys coaching matters you know who plays quarterback matters uh who plays
04:25next to the left tackle matters um you know i think all that stuff matters and so i don't you
04:32don't play
04:32the game in a vacuum you don't play it in a phone booth separate from everything else everything else
04:38around it matters uh they've rebuilt this you know offense line uh it looks like on paper it looks
04:45like it could be a pretty good group uh really you know how they play together is the most important
04:51thing and so i think you know the opposition matters and who you're playing and where you're
04:57playing them all that stuff matters uh you get 17 cracks at it uh you know you want to see
05:02improvement
05:03as a group now that you've kind of identified probably the five starters or you know at least
05:09the eight guys are going to make this football team and try to make them better i think right now
05:14they're in a pretty good position but i think all this stuff matters and uh the only thing that matters
05:19is how well you play on sundays right now you mentioned the rebuilding of the offensive line you
05:24obviously mentioned casey concepcion a little bit earlier clearly a lot of draft capital invested on the
05:30offensive side of the ball in this draft and rightfully so do we know there's a quarterback
05:35competition that's unfolding here in cleveland do you now feel that whoever wins that job is now
05:42supported by the offensive talent around them to where we can sort of go through this next season
05:47and get a true feel of we have a franchise quarterback or we need to maybe invest in one
05:54next year in 2027 yeah i mean i think the team around whoever plays quarterback um is much much
06:02better the the receiving core was horrible last year and you know which between the drops and
06:07inability to get open i don't care who's playing quarterback flack ocean or dylan it was it was a
06:12horrible group i think adding the two pieces that they did the the tight end coming back for second
06:18year the run the rookie running backs last year now getting a year underneath them they should be much
06:22better around whoever's playing quarterback and much more competitive we know the defense is going
06:27to be good it's a strength of the team um but you know if you could keep the score at
06:3317 points uh the
06:35offense this year with what they have whoever's playing quarterback should be able to generate 17 to
06:4020 points and have a chance to win a lot more of these games so uh baldy join us right
06:45now in the
06:46hotline the odyssey nfl analyst uh there's been some early reporting after just a few install days
06:52that sean watson is actually the leader right now of course is still so early uh we had todd munkett
06:59in studio on friday and he says he'd love to get just a a depth chart rounded out at the
07:05quarterback
07:06position by june how do you feel about that do you feel like there should be that kind of urgency
07:11to get that taken care of because obviously we see some of these quarterback competitions go
07:17right up until the start of the season well you can build i mean look todd can try to get
07:23the the
07:24depth chart figured out going into training camp that means you know at the end of june here when
07:29the otas all finish up you can get the depth chart figured out some of these players not just
07:36quarterbacks some players don't play great until you know the until the it's real football i mean you
07:45could go through all these training camp practices and you can you can chart you know how many completions
07:51they make a day or how many good throw you can do all that stuff and then you play these
07:55preseason
07:56games and sometimes you get a different result and then you get to the regular season you get a
08:01completely different result so yes i think what what coach munkin is saying is he'd like to get a
08:08depth chart so that he knows who his number ones are and they're going to get the majority of the
08:12work getting ready for the season but honestly september is the new august and so sometimes you don't realize
08:19you know what somebody is or how they move the team or how they make decisions until it really counts
08:26and so you could do it so that all right uh should or you know is going to get x
08:32amount of snaps
08:33the sean's going to get x amount of snaps with the first team in the first offensive line and you
08:37can
08:38evaluate it but um that's just uh that's just good in theory until you actually go out there and try
08:44to
08:44win a real football game and try to get to 1-0 right now off of that i think locally
08:49at least browns fans
08:51are we're we're intrigued by what we saw from shador sanders last year but want to see more we
08:57understand that based on what's been reported so far that like maybe deshaun is the leader in the
09:01clubhouse however this shakes out and however whatever order these guys end up in whoever plays first
09:07whatever sort of games to show excuse me shador gets or you know as he's kind of working and trying
09:14to get better in the in the preseason and training camp what do you what are the things that you
09:19need to
09:20see from shador to get a to feel like he can be the future for this this franchise at that
09:25position
09:26well i mean just all the basics you know the completions you know a number of completions
09:33does the team move when he's out there on the field can they convert on third down stay on the
09:38field
09:38uh you know can he go through his progressions and find the right receiver against the right
09:44you know coverage all the stuff that quarterback play is about can you lead
09:48did his team respond to you in the huddle um all those all those things uh you you can i
09:55think
09:55the naked eye can see it but you know todd munkin knows what he's looking at he's coaching us he's
10:01coached in the nfl and he's coaching college he understands the the necessity of the position
10:06to play at a very consistent rate not turn the ball over finish drives in the you know in the
10:13end zone
10:13and not kick field goals all those things uh you know he's had a chance to watch the mvp of
10:18the league
10:18two-time mvp of the league do it in practice do it in games um so i think he has
10:23a pretty good measure
10:24of what it takes right now uh i i trust his judgment at that that's why he's the head coach
10:30right now
10:30and so he's got to make the right decision and that's going to probably go a long term to a
10:36long time
10:37to deciding how long he's the coach of the cleveland browns right now but just because it went so bad
10:42with watson when he was able to play and then since then he had the surgeries i asked coach last
10:49week
10:50like are you supposed to be an objective impartial observer like a like they instruct the jury like
10:56how can you come in here and act like that hasn't happened i mean a new coach how can they
11:01separate
11:02themselves from all that bad tape and try to find a way to either pin that on situation and that
11:09they
11:09can coach that out of them yeah i don't know exactly how that all gets done i i think you
11:15have to
11:16kind of come in tabula rasa like just a clean slate and let them just compete for wherever they're at
11:22whatever age they are whatever injuries they'll overcome whatever off the field issues there have
11:27been uh i just think you gotta try to make it as fair as possible and evaluate from what you
11:34see i
11:35i mean i think todd munkin remembers when deshaun watson went to baltimore on one leg and beat him
11:41you know a couple of years ago i think todd was probably the offense coordinator there in baltimore
11:46he probably witnessed it you know i was there that day i saw it i mean i didn't think it
11:50was really
11:51possible but he had a friend he made some incredible plays some incredible athletic plays
11:56uh that day and i remember his his ankle was terrible or knee or whatever it was i mean i
12:02know
12:02he was hobbling at the end of the game but you know he found a way to win so um
12:07i think it's just
12:09the only fair thing to do is just uh you know literally not have any sort of memory bank of
12:16what's
12:16happened before and let them that's why he's there still they still think there's some football left in
12:21them and uh let him let the best man win the job right now and i think that's what they're
12:27going
12:27to try to do with as much clarity as possible you talk about todd munkin and he's been very clear
12:33since he got here baldy about his offense and that it's not really like a set system that his goal
12:38is
12:39just to find what his players do well what his team does well what his offense does well and maximize
12:45those things it's honestly kind of refreshing to hear to a degree why aren't there more coaches
12:51that take that approach to offense or if they're a defensive coach their defense and they kind of
12:57end up just end up in a lane of of we do this specific thing uh well i think that
13:06some coaches
13:08just know a particular system but you know i remember when um you know i've seen it so many
13:16times where they're just married to a system and that's all they can coach and that's how they got
13:20the job but i think what todd's doing i mean he's been in college he's been uh the coordinator you
13:25know
13:25he's gone back and forth i mean i think this is a guy that's going to adjust his uh program
13:30right now
13:31and his offense to the talents that's around him what they do best it might depend on who's the
13:36quarterback and what we're going to do that's the way it should be you should be able to be flexible
13:42and i remember when uh terrell owens came to philadelphia and andy reed was a west coast
13:47offensive guy and the x receiver was going to get 80 catches and the z's going to get 60 in
13:52the tight
13:53you know and then t.o came and it was like bombs away well we got a great deep threat
13:58why can't
13:59why wouldn't donovan mcnab take these shots down the field they went all the way to the super bowl
14:03so i think that's what you should do you shouldn't be married and all good coaches you know whether
14:09it's bill walsh or i don't care cliff cainsbury like they should have 10 new plays up on the board
14:14every single monday getting ready for the next week depending on who's healthy who's that quarterback
14:20who the opponent is and we're going to attack this way with with what with who's healthy and who's
14:27there that's what they should do they should not be married to a particular system
14:32baldy we'll wrap up with this and we appreciate your time the odyssey nfl analyst so terrific on
14:37social media as well are you sick and tired of aaron rogers
14:42uh no because you know he adds a lot to this league whether it's um whether it's decision and
14:51what he wants to do we're talking about it you know like what else are we talking about um
14:56um right now if aaron rogers is in pittsburgh practicing or aaron rogers has retired we're
15:03talking about him he gets people to talk about the game and that's what we want 365 you know 24
15:097
15:10and he gets you to do that you know whether it's good or bad or whatever or if it's off
15:15the field
15:16stuff or whatever his uh thinking is at the time uh is he married is he married who's who's he
15:21married
15:22too like we he gets us to talk about him and so that's not a bad thing sounds like he
15:27needs uh
15:27just a reality show and baldy will be a subscriber wherever it is yeah is he is he gonna if
15:33he goes
15:33up for celebrity jeopardy is he the favorite right now i mean that's that's aaron beautiful all right
15:39baldy we appreciate you coming on thanks man we'll do it again all right guys you got it man all
15:43right
15:43brian baldinger had uh something very interesting very john lockian for you ancient philosopher types
15:51on the tabula rasa the clean slate for deshaun watson are you capable of doing that as a browns fan
