00:47I don't have any preconceived notions of who they've been or where they're going.

01:56What he is saying is all of us need to cool our jets when it comes to the quarterback evaluation,
02:04the quarterback competition, who's in the lead, and the day-to-day charting of everything.
02:13So I shouldn't be crunching the completion percentage tomorrow is what you're telling me.
02:17But it's the first practice in pads.
02:19No completion percentage for me is what you're telling me.
02:21What he's saying is the first training, first eight training camp practices, they're doing
02:27offensive install.
02:28You know, there was this narrative out there, well, the Browns haven't scored any touchdowns.
02:31And then yesterday, everyone was making the jokes of, oh, hey, what do you know?
02:34The Browns scored a touchdown.
02:36It's the first touchdown of camp.
02:37Now, in fairness, yes, I get it.
02:39There were no explosive plays.
02:41The first three practices offensively were boring.
02:45I'm not going to lie.
02:46They were boring.
02:48It was like watching Eric Mangini practices offensively.
02:53That's not good.
02:53Okay?
02:55But I have to be fair.
02:57They weren't working on that.
02:59They were working on some third down situations.
03:02They were working on other situations.
03:04They weren't working on the explosive plays.
03:06Because yesterday, they worked on vertical passing game and red zone.

04:15So they slept in and they didn't have time to get all dressed up.
04:18And so they go trotting in in the middle of the ceremony.
04:21And they get asked, Winger gets asked, where's your drill sergeant?
04:25And he goes, blown up, sir.
04:30That's what I thought about.
04:31Yeah, Mike Hall got blown up.
04:33When I saw Mike Hall, Jr. get absolutely de-cleated by Quinshawn Judkins, who then just proceeded
04:40to go right into his route.

04:44It was one of the meanest chips I've ever seen in a practice.

04:54After we heard that from Munkin, that they're installing things, we're four practices in deep

05:01So the installation will be complete on Thursday.

05:06So for me now, the clock on the quarterback evaluation starts with Friday's practice
05:13because that will be camp practice number nine.
05:16Yeah.

05:18And that is in line with what Todd Munkin was saying.
05:21All he was saying is, look, yes, we're evaluating the quarterbacks at all times.
05:25But as far as this in-depth, nitpick everything the way we in the media and obviously the fans
05:34who are out there attending the camp practices, the way we're nitpicking things, that's not
05:39what he's doing right now.
05:41Right.
05:41He's just kind of taking it in.
05:43He's observing, hey, how are these guys adapting to the installation?
05:47Are they executing what's being installed on a given day?
05:51Okay.
05:52When there are interceptions, and there have been plenty, especially from Deshaun Watson,
05:57you know, are they throwing to the right spot?
05:58Andrew Barry talked about this this past week because I asked him a question along those
06:03lines as far as evaluating independent of the results or the outcome of the plays, and
06:08he gave a great, insightful answer to that.
06:11But like, okay, so if you throw a pick, did you at least go to the right read on that?
06:15You know, okay, then is it a byproduct?
06:17Did you make a bad throw?
06:18Hey, did your receiver run the wrong route?
06:21Was the route as crisp as it was supposed to be?
06:24So like, there are, like, we just see the interception.
06:27Right.
06:27We don't know if, hey, was that ultimately the right thing the quarterback should have
06:32done there as far as where they threw the ball?
06:34Was it actually a bad throw?
06:37Was it a byproduct of a guy not running around correctly?
06:40Here's the thing that makes me a little bit worried about that, though, Daryl.
06:43Like, all sounds great.
06:44It does.
06:45It all sounds great in a vacuum.
06:46Here's my issue with it, though.
06:48When it comes to Deshaun Watson, I've heard that four other summers.
06:52Yeah, I know.
06:53We've done four other summers of, well, there's context around the interceptions that
06:57he throws at practice.
06:58And it is just practice, so we can't look too far into this because maybe he's a different
07:02player when he gets out of practice and into the games.
07:05You know, when the moments are bright, when the pads come on, maybe you'll elevate.
07:08Like, we've played that game so many times.
07:10So it's like I'm trying to identify what is these quarterbacks just learning a brand new
07:15offense that Munkin hasn't been here.
07:17And these guys are genuinely going through these plays on the practice field with all
07:22of us there for the very first time, or if not the very first time, the first couple
07:27of times that they've ever run these plays.
07:29Mistakes get made.
07:30That's life.
07:30Yeah.
07:31But at the same time, when it comes to this specific quarterback, we've seen summers of
07:37interceptions that lead to fall of interceptions that lead to, unfortunately, injuries.
07:43You know, so like, I am trying to figure out if I've seen this movie before, or if this
07:47is a new movie, or if it's the same movie with just a slightly different subplot.
07:53Here's the thing.
07:54Both of these quarterbacks continue to be wildly inconsistent, practice to practice, okay?
08:00Between the two, I think Shador Sanders has been the more consistent.
08:04But still, from my view, not on the level that it needs to be, okay?
08:09I think Dylan Gabriel, of all the quarterbacks, practice to practice, has been the most consistent
08:17quarterback.
08:19Has he been the best quarterback?
08:20I don't know about it, but he's been consistent.
08:22Day in and day out.
08:24Now, that does not mean I am sitting here advocating for Dylan to be the starter, not by a long
08:29shot.
08:29I was making the joke with a couple of colleagues yesterday, because everyone knows my feelings
08:34on Dylan Gabriel.
08:35It's nothing personal.
08:36I think he's a great kid.
08:37I think he was a really good college quarterback.
08:42The good Lord did not bless him with the physical traits that are required to play that position.
08:50Like, if you put Dylan Gabriel into Green's body, you might have something there, okay?
08:59But you can't do that.
09:02You just hop on Madden and create a MyPlayer?
09:07He is what he is, okay?
09:09There's nothing he can do about the fact that I'm taller than him.
09:14That's not his fault, okay?
09:16But unfortunately, in the National Football League, it matters.
09:20I just wonder, right?
09:22Okay, so they say that there are eight practices is what it's going to take to do all this install
09:27work,
09:28and then we can start evaluating them on the ninth practice, which is Friday.
09:31Because that's when you go into a little bit of a game-planning mode and a little bit of a,
09:35hey, we're practicing against our defense.
09:37It's no longer about situational stuff.
09:40It's no longer, hey, today we're working on third and short.
09:42Tomorrow we're working on third and long.
09:44The next day we're going to work on going vertical with the pass game.
09:47We're going to work on our red zone efficiency, our red zone offense, right?
09:53And so there has to be some context in there as well.
09:59It's easy to sit there and say, yeah, they didn't score any or many touchdowns in the first three practices.
10:03It was virtually unwatchable at times.
10:06Well, I do think that there's an element in there, Nick, of the unwatchability was built in.
10:12In other words, just because we're sitting there, look, every time we go out there, and the same thing for
10:18fans too.
10:19When you're going out there, you want to see these quarterbacks slinging it all over the fields, okay?
10:24You want to see the explosive and the highlight plays and the vertical passing game and receivers running away from
10:30defensive backs
10:31and receivers mossing defensive backs, right?
10:36I mean, that's what you want to see as a fan.
10:38That's what we, covering the team, those are things that we want to see.
10:41Mostly a lot because, well, that's the modern NFL, but also too, we don't get to see a lot of
10:47that.
10:48In Browns camps, it is, you know, dink and dunk.
10:52And that's what the first three days of practice looked like.
10:54They were dink and dunk practices, which again...
10:56Are they going to have enough time?
10:58Yeah, there's plenty of time.
10:59You're allowed 16 padded practices.
11:02And he said that that's what he's going to base.
11:04Well, that was the reason why he did it.
11:06They're going to have, I'm guessing, around three of those padded practices this coming week, okay?
11:12They're not going to be in pads every day.
11:13They'll be in pads, I believe, Monday and Tuesday, okay?
11:17I'm making a guess.
11:18I don't know this, so don't hold this against me.
11:20I'm going to make an educated guess that maybe Wednesday won't be a padded practice.
11:24It's just like, if we're not supposed to judge these interceptions now, and you're only allowed 16 of them,
11:30it's like, man, and that was the reason why...
11:32But they're not in pads yet either.
11:33But the padded practice thing was the reason why we didn't name a starting quarterback yet.
11:38Yeah, but again, they're not in pads right now anyway.
11:41Right, but I'm just trying to make sure that when they put the pads on Monday...
11:44They've got plenty of time.
11:45Like, the evaluation still ain't started then.
11:47Like, we're just supposed to watch these interceptions and just be like, okay, nothing to see here.
11:52Nope, nope.
11:53No reason to overreact or anything like that.
11:57We got four more of these installation-style practices for the offense, okay?
12:01Now, the defense does not look like they are doing much installation of anything.

13:20But before everyone freaks out about that, they're not in pads.

13:25Yeah, the engagement that they're doing with the defensive line is very limited because they're not in the pads.
13:32Like, we can have the conversation about—but I did say, because I made the defensive line my camper of the
13:37day,
13:37because they were disrupting a lot of what the Browns' offense were trying to do from the installation standpoint with
13:44the vertical passing game.
13:45And that's all you could ask for from those guys is be hungry.
13:48Mason Graham looks like he's the Hulk right now.
13:51Well, what's awesome about that, though, is, like, Mason said in the spring, somebody asked him about, like, how Fano's
13:58coming along.
13:58And he's like, look, you're not going to be able to know that until he puts the pads on, you
14:02know?
14:02So, like, it is cool that they are kind of capitalizing on this opportunity where the offensive line can't be
14:09as good as they can be on their best day just because nobody's in pads.
14:13So, yeah, that defense—I like that they're feeling good right now, especially after the gravity of that Miles Garrett trade.
14:19Remember, we were saying, like, how would a guy like Graham respond to that?
14:23And it seems like he's hungrier for the bigger opportunity and the bigger role, which I'm so pumped about.
14:30And, again, that's why I'm trying—you know, both Lance and I are trying—it's easy for him.
14:37He's a coach, so he doesn't overreact to anything.
14:39But, like, from my standpoint, that's why I'm not trying to overreact to the interceptions.
14:42That's why I'm trying not to overreact to the first three boring practices because there's context that come with all
14:48that stuff.
