00:03I saw the reports yesterday, and I want to know, I want to ask you this, because I got
00:14really excited.
00:15Parker Brailsford got starting reps yesterday, or he was with the first teamers yesterday.
00:19Is this correct?
00:21I should have asked Mary Kay about this, but Parker Brailsford.
00:24Okay.
00:24Parker Brailsford is the fifth round, if I'm not mistaken, fifth round rookie center
00:29for the Cleveland Browns, and I know there's Luke Whipler out there, but Parker Brailsford
00:36is.
00:37Round five, pick 146, Parker Brailsford, center out of Alabama, formerly out of Washington,
00:43came over with old Kalen DeBoer.
00:46So if he ends up playing, and he ends up starting, and he ends up playing well, I want to
00:51take
00:5295% of my criticism that I've ever had to Andrew Barry and throw it on Paul DiBodesta.
00:56Is that right, or do I just want to be right?
00:58I want you to be very crystal clear about what I just asked.
01:01Not about wrong.
01:02Is that, am I right, or do I just want to be right on that?
01:06Because yeah, there's the great big elephant in the room, that's Deshaun Watson.
01:08Okay, that's 5%, maybe more, because maybe you just don't like Deshaun Watson that much
01:12and hate that move that much more.
01:13That's fine.
01:14But my God, I have Bucky Brooks over the last, like I told you, I've heard Bucky Brooks,
01:19that podcast with Daniel Jeremiah is over, they just ended it, the move the sticks.
01:23I've heard Bucky Brooks like three times mention in a side, like he's not, they're not going
01:29to go right after guys, really, but he's mentioned like three times, Bucky Brooks, former player
01:36and, and scout TV guy, the whole thing has been like, yeah, it's amazing.
01:40Ever since Paul DiBodesta has gone, Andrew Barry's starting to knock it out of the park.
01:43I wonder what's going on there.
01:44I'm going, oh, I'm getting excited.
01:46But if Parker Brailsford's a fifth round guy and he ends up being a solid center for
01:49you, I mean, this is, you go back to last year's draft, this year's draft that people
01:54are excited about.
01:56What am I to do, Tone?
01:57Because you know, I'd love to scapegoat a guy who's no longer here.
02:02You know, I'd love to.
02:04Am I right by doing that?
02:06That's why I'm asking you, like this is a question for both of you guys to get in my
02:09head, maybe even John.
02:10In this equation, do they actually win games eventually?
02:13This year?
02:14No, I just mean, you could tell me about all the different players they have and the good
02:18drafts that they have.
02:19Does it matter if they don't win games?
02:21The Jets had good drafts.
02:22The Saints had good drafts.
02:23They didn't win games.
02:24So part of being a general manager, yes, got to start landing draft picks.
02:28And they finally got first round picks again.
02:30That's, that also coincided, you know, happened to coincide with DiBodesta being gone.
02:34Oh, look, now we have first round picks because they finally had their first round
02:38picks back.
02:38You probably would have thought DiBodesta was okay if they had more first round picks,
02:42but those were used.
02:43We understand why.
02:44What I'm saying is the draft is part of it, but being a GM is more than just the draft.
02:51Also like being a quarterback is more than just some mini camp throws.
02:54There's so much more to being a GM.
02:57It's do these pieces and parts add up?
02:59Like for instance, we all thought Andrew Barry nailed the draft last year, right?
03:03But did he also hurt the football team by taking the two quarterbacks in the third and
03:08fifth round?
03:08Is that good general managing?
03:11Does that, does that, does that kind of, would they have won more than five games had
03:15they had not taken two quarterbacks in that draft?
03:18Well, what, what would have happened?
03:20Like, let's, let's think about this.
03:21Would they have kept Joe Flacco?
03:23Would they, you know what I mean?
03:24Like probably less, cause they would have put Dylan Gabriel in there.
03:27Or would they move down from Dylan?
03:29You know, they got injured anyway.
03:31Would they just played with 10?
03:31I mean, the only reason they moved down from him when they did was he got injured.
03:34Okay.
03:35So it wasn't just that he was bad.
03:36Would they, so they would have kept Kenny Pickett.
03:38They would have kept Joe Flacco.
03:39Yeah, that's what I'm wondering.
03:40Kenny Pickett's aunt would have been saying nasty stuff to us.
03:42Nothing that the quarterbacks did won them games.
03:44That's what I meant.
03:45Yeah.
03:45But what I'm saying.
03:47You could have played quarterback, Ken.
03:49Yeah.
03:49They were a 5-1 team.
03:50The Steelers game, I could have played quarterback.
03:52What I'm saying is the Jets added good players over the course of how many years.
03:56The Saints had good drafts.
03:58Yeah.
03:58They didn't win games.
04:00So like even in the great draft that he had last year, was that really going to result
04:05in a lot of games?
04:06If anything, what did we argue about all camp, the quarterback thing?
04:11Why did they take Dylan Gabriel in the third round and then compound it with muddying that
04:16position with Shador in the fifth round?
04:19And then we are left to complain about reps and did the receivers ever get the reps with
04:24the quarterbacks?
04:24Did you end up kind of cutting your nose off to spite your face?
04:29Well, going back to that, I think they were just throwing it at the wall.
04:32But my bigger point is...
04:33I've always asked, was Andrew Barry the one that made that decision?
04:36My bigger point is being a GM is more than just drafting the players.
04:40Yes, that's huge.
04:41You've got to land some drafts.
04:42Well, Andrew Barry yesterday with Peter Stryger, he brought up it's more than just the draft.
04:47Let's hear that.
04:47Yes, it's not like the draft supersedes what you can do in the fall.
04:52I think, number one, the ability to compete every season is sacred.
04:55That doesn't mean that at times you don't have to make strategic decisions at the trade
04:58deadline or something along those lines.
05:00We don't want to put a ceiling on a team.
05:02I think when we went to the playoffs in 2020 and 2023, our Vegas win totals may have been
05:07like five or six games.
05:08So you don't know.
05:09To rewind a year, how many people anticipated New England being in the Super Bowl or that
05:15Washington, Kansas City, Cincinnati would be picking in the top 10.
05:18You just don't know how things are going to progress.
05:20I think the beauty of our sport is the parity and the fact that it's not like baseball or
05:25maybe I would imagine a little bit hockey where you have to have five-year rebuilds to
05:30get a team back on track.
05:31I think the beauty of youth is like there is a level of like variance in the positive
05:36direction that makes you really excited going into the season.
05:38Also understanding that also there ends up being a little bit of a lower floor as well.
05:42I like how we're positioned because we're really excited about the players that we have
05:45going to fall and we're looking forward to winning as many games as we can, but also
05:50knowing that we are well stocked from like a resource standpoint as it pertains to the
05:5527 through 29 drafts.
05:56I, again, like I, I, I easily want to scapegoat.
06:02I don't know if I'm going to be allowed to scapegoat.
06:05And so when you say these things, like this is me talking here now, I would love to put
06:09it all on D Podesta.
06:11I told you, I didn't really care for the guy.
06:13Uh, I didn't like how everybody he seemed to meet always had to reintroduce themselves.
06:19Uh, just wasn't a fan was not a fan.
06:22He only seemed to come around when things were going well, not a fan.
06:27And Andrew Barry's had to sit in there and he's had to deal with some sincere criticism
06:31from all of us, some sincere nastiness from the fan base as well.
06:35And it does feel a little bit like he's coming out on the other side.
06:38Now it's June 11th.
06:39I don't know what's going to happen during this year, but if I'm picking them to win six
06:42games, that means he's still going to have to keep his head down a little bit because
06:45there's going to be some fans who are a little bit upset.
06:47Now I know that the draft class and what's just happened, maybe that changes.
06:51I just want to know, cause you guys, you do hold me accountable.
06:54Owen holds me accountable.
06:57Am I right?
06:58Or do I just want to be right?
06:59Because when I hear this, when I hear these things about Paul D.
07:02But as to tone, like I get the, by the way, that audio courtesy of the Schrager hour, um,
07:06I get excited and then I start to think, man, what did this guy do?
07:10But you're always the type of guy you've always said, you're not the type of guy.
07:13You've always said, eh, I think you're overrating what he actually did.
07:16I think you're overrating what he actually did, which makes me think that he's one of
07:19your sources to be honest with you.
07:20But, uh, you've always kind of poo-pooed how important he is to all this thing.
07:26And I've been on the other side calling the guy Rasputin and it's just odd to me that
07:32they're doing some things right and he's gone.
07:34He's in baseball.
07:36It's, it's just very weird to me that I kept going, man, Andrew Barry played the game.
07:41He had teammates.
07:43How does he not know how to do this?
07:45And then the guy who didn't play at, I don't know, at any level, the guy who does not have
07:50a history in football, that guy's gone.
07:52And I'm sure he did some good things there, but that guy's gone.
07:56And all of a sudden these drafts are, are doing well.
07:58Like they, they get lauded for their draft and how great it was this year.
08:01We'll find out.
08:02They got to actually put pads on last year's draft class was fantastic.
08:06Even when you took a guy that nobody seems to like in the third round and that they can't
08:11wait to get rid of in the third round.
08:12And we put that on Kevin Stefanski.
08:14Like here I am.
08:16One guy's gone to Atlanta, the other guy's gone to Colorado, and I just can't get caught
08:21in fan mode here and say everything's their fault, not Andrew's fault, because Andrew's
08:25still the one here.
08:26I just, I'm, I'm, I'm troubleshooting and I want to make sure that everything is on the
08:30up and up here because again, we're going to start a season.
08:33And when we start the season, I can't go hide behind the things that I said in June.
08:36But that's what I say.
08:36Are we going to say the same thing if they win two or three games this year?
08:39And they're one of the worst teams in football.
08:40Are you going to say, wait, cause I'm going to come back and go, wait, Dibonesta's gone.
08:44What happened?
08:44If they end, yeah, but you can win two or three games and still have some good players on
08:48this team.
08:48Every team in the NFL has good players, Ken.
08:50I understand that, but I'm talking about the young guys here.
08:53Did you not hear what I said?
08:54Yes, yes.
08:54And I told you, the Jets had good young players.
08:57They didn't win.
08:57The Saints had good young players.
08:59They didn't win.
09:00And I get that.
09:00And I think that one of the lessons they're trying to learn or they're trying to follow through
09:04with is not throwing the baby out with the bathwater and restarting every other
09:08year like they had in the past.
09:09Cause the Jets do that a lot.
09:11And that's why they have to trade these tremendous draft classes every other year because they
09:16keep switching it out every other year.
09:17They, they, I love the Travis Hunter trade and I said, I said, I would, I wanted Mason
09:22Graham like that.
09:23That to me was a safe pick, but there were other guys that could have taken did Mason
09:26Graham.
09:27Is he going to help you win games over the next few years compared to other guys?
09:31Yeah.
09:31They took Carson.
09:32Compared to a quarterback.
09:32Swessinger is awesome.
09:34A linebacker doesn't win games the way we used to think they did in the eighties.
09:37But if you have a quarter, if you have the quarterback, that's why I, if you get to,
09:41if you're end up drafting number two overall and you get Dante Moore, which hopefully he'll
09:46be playing better this year.
09:47He played really well last year.
09:48I just hope he doesn't have a fall off.
09:49If you end up getting the second overall pick and it's like, all right, we're going
09:52to take a quarterback.
09:53You take Dante Moore.
09:54All of a sudden Carson Swessinger looks a hell of a lot better.
09:56It's a Steelers principle.
09:57What I said, Carson Swessinger is already a really good player, but they look better when
10:02they're around that type of QB.
10:03And when you have that type of QB for a long time, what did I say?
10:07There's a lot of guys who we overrated for years just because they wore that uniform,
10:12just because they play with Mahomes, just because they play with Lamar or with Josh Allen.
10:17We do that all the time because we don't pay as close of attention to them as we do with
10:21quarterbacks.
10:22So I know, and Browns fans know, that Carson Swessinger is great.
10:26He's wonderful.
10:28He'll look even better when he's playing with good quarterback play.
10:32And I'm just trying to make sure that I hold myself accountable because when I see that
10:40Parker Brailsford is getting starting reps and I know that there were people going,
10:44Hey, they, they really like him.
10:45Like I'm going back to what I was talking about with Nathan on the air and all the other
10:49things I go, man, I got Brailsford here.
10:52I got Barbara as a future swing tackle, Emmanuel McNeil Warren.
10:55That looked like a steel Denzel Boston.
10:57He already looks faster.
10:58That Zach Jackson saying that, and Zach doesn't say anything nice about anybody unless they
11:02100% earn it.
11:03Casey Concepcion, he's a burner.
11:05You got to get the ball in his hands.
11:06He's got to hold onto the ball, but there's a lot of nice things about him.
11:08And obviously we think Spencer Fano is going to be a really good offensive lineman for us
11:11for a long time.
11:12Now, now we're doing really, really well.
11:14What'd you think of the, a couple other tidbits in there?
11:17One, he, he, and he's, he said he was noticed first.
11:21Pat McAfee noticed him first because he was sleeping in the facility.
11:25Notice who first, um, when he was working in Indy, Andrew Barry, notice Andrew Barry
11:29first that he was sleeping and he said, Oh, I knew back then he was going to be really
11:33good at what he does.
11:35And he loves football, obviously.
11:36And then Andrew Barry is like, I don't advise anybody to do that.
11:39We don't do that.
11:40Like, I wish I wouldn't have done that back then.
11:43And I know Kevin had said the same thing with us.
11:45I think that was maybe more off the air, but he said anybody who prides themselves in sleeping
11:49in the building, uh, that stuff's for losers.
11:51That stuff is not, not for winning football.
11:54That's not acting smart.
11:55That's not working smart.
12:00It's, it's, it's apples and oranges.
12:02I understand we internalize everything.
12:04You remember when I did that Sunday night show and would turn around and do the morning
12:06show.
12:08I would sleep in here every now and then.
12:10And it really messed with my psyche.
12:12It's not good.
12:13It really doesn't help.
12:14It made me really depressed.
12:16I'd be tired all the time.
12:17Yeah.
12:1724 seven.
12:18He also said he goes scouts games, like in the sec, he just shows up playing clothes
12:23like a civilian buys tickets in the stands.
12:26And he wants to observe that way.
12:28I actually think that's, that's really smart.
12:29I actually made a documentary about a guy who did a lot of those same things.
12:37You think he's helping Princeton?
12:40Well, he went to Harvard.
12:41His brother went to Princeton, right?
12:43Eddie, which one's, which I can't tell they're identical.
12:46Well, the, the, the, the Ivy stuff, the Ivy league, the twin brothers, it throws me
12:51off.
12:52I got a text from somebody like two years ago, who was at an sec game who thought they saw
12:57him in the stands.
12:57Yeah.
12:58Like, I'm like, he wouldn't be in the stands.
12:59Yes, he would.
13:00Does not do the press box.
13:01Doesn't want to be on the sidelines.
13:03Well, that's what me and him agree on.
13:04We, I mean, I like Andrew, but I certainly hate press boxes too.
13:08Don't videotape it and don't buy tickets for your mom to sit on the other side and videotape
13:13it.
