00:00Daryl, how are we doing on this fine Tuesday?
00:02We are doing well.
00:03That's good to hear.
00:04We got to see Browns in action.
00:06Not only a couple more training camp days, but legitimate football.
00:10Daryl, the football season now, does it feel officially back that we've gotten real football?
00:14I don't know that I would call what you saw on Saturday legitimate football.
00:19Easy there, Sailor.
00:20I mean, we saw touchdowns.
00:23We saw field goals.
00:24We saw three and outs.
00:26Not scored by the Browns.
00:27Hey, they had a couple of those three and outs.
00:29Three run plays off the rip.
00:31Felt like it was almost guaranteed, but.
00:33That did make you feel like it was football season.
00:36The Browns went three and out.
00:37There you go.
00:38There you go.
00:39Everything's back to its normal state, Daryl.
00:41All right, quarterbacks back on Saturday.
00:46Week one, they play the Bears.
00:47How did you see the quarterback battle kind of play out between how Deshaun played and how Shador played in
00:53their limited time?
00:54Well, it's over.
00:56Deshaun Watson's going to be your week one starter.
00:58So I've seen nothing from Shador Sanders to convince me otherwise that, you know, the Browns and Todd Munkin are
01:08going to decide to go in a different direction.
01:12You know, I thought Deshaun managed the game fine, and that's what it was.
01:18He got in and out healthy, played a full half.
01:22The offense put 10 points on the board in the first quarter against the Bears' better players.
01:28That's a positive sign there.
01:31But, you know, outside of that, I mean, you know, there were a couple plays where you could see some.
01:41He's not seeing the full field yet.
01:43He doesn't have the complete feel for the game just yet.
01:48Maybe that'll come back.
01:50It probably won't.
01:52But, you know, I think that he is definitely going to be the Browns' week one starter.
02:02Darryl, if you're Todd Munkin and the Browns, why drag this thing out another week, split up the reps in
02:07joint practice on Thursday?
02:09I mean, ultimately, Saturday feels like a little bit less important at this point.
02:13The starter's likely out.
02:14But why continue this week with the quarterback battle still going on?
02:18Yeah, well, I think because Todd wants to be a man of his word, and especially when it comes to
02:25in the locker room, right?
02:26Trust is very, very important when you're talking about the locker room.
02:32So I think because Todd Munkin promised Shadur Sanders would start a preseason game, he's going to stick with that.
02:40The circumstances are not going to be equal, though.
02:43Deshaun Watson got a couple series with the ones.
02:47Shadur Sanders is not getting that on Sunday.
02:50Or, I mean, Saturday, I should say, in the preseason game.
02:54Now, obviously, he'll get the throw to Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston because the rookies will play.
03:01But he's not going to get time with the ones like Deshaun did.
03:07And you look at the way this week has been scheduled out by Todd Munkin.
03:14I mean, just read the delays, people.
03:16It's not going to be Shadur Sanders unless something happens to Deshaun Watson.
03:21Like, that's just the reality that I think people need to come to terms with.
03:27I, you know, like I thought this is playing out exactly how I thought it would play out.
03:32And through two practices this week, I haven't seen anything from Shadur Sanders to where I can sit here and
03:40say,
03:40yeah, Todd Munkin absolutely needs to think twice about starting Deshaun Watson.
03:45And I say that telling you that Deshaun Watson has not been all that remarkable in this training camp.
03:52So, that should tell you where Shadur Sanders is.
03:57Like, if he can't beat out Deshaun, clearly there's work that needs to be done with his game.
04:02And that's okay.
04:03Fifth-round pick, doing things he's never had to do before.
04:06I can't stress that enough.
04:07Like, this is a completely different situation that he has had to deal with.
04:15At least this year, though, he's gotten an opportunity to get practice reps, or meaningful practice reps, I should say.
04:22And so, you know, but he's not there yet.
04:26And, you know, so instead of playing the sabotage card and we're all a bunch of haters and racists and
04:36all that kind of stuff,
04:38just understand Shadur very well may someday be a good NFL quarterback.
04:45Today, here on August 18th, he is not.
04:50And, again, Daryl Ryder with us here on the hotline.
04:53And, Daryl, I'm obviously iterating there.
04:55I'll re-up on it very quickly.
04:57But people are going to have the conversation, especially as it surrounds Shadur.
05:01But you feel like throughout this entire process, Todd has operated in a way that has given Shadur an opportunity.
05:06And Shadur has lost his battle on his own merits.
05:09If it happens that way, obviously.
05:11Yes, I do.
05:12A hundred percent.
05:13Now, there's, I mean, and Todd will tell you there's no such thing as equal and fair.
05:18In sports.
05:19But I think that this was as, this was as fair as I think you could ask for.
05:29Shadur has had opportunity.
05:32And I don't think that he has developed his game or his game has developed to a level to where
05:41he could seize it.
05:42And, again, I'm not criticizing Shadur Sanders.
05:46I really am not.
05:47But, like, he has come a long way.
05:51And he has shown marked improvement.
05:53And when he does play this season, which, by the way, he's going to play this season, when he does,
05:57he's going to be a better quarterback than we saw last year.
06:00And that's somewhat exciting.
06:02And it's part of the reason why I have always been in the camp of start him week one.
06:08But I think Todd Munkin, being a first-time NFL head coach, 60 years old, he is going to go
06:14with the veteran who actually has experience or more experience than Shadur does.
06:20And I'm going to start with him.
06:22And then when it goes off the rails, and it will go off the rails, Shadur Sanders will get to
06:26step in.
06:27And hopefully that's not before the season is completely sunk, because I would say I don't think that's fair to
06:33Shadur that his first two years with the Browns, he takes over untenable situations.
06:38He took one over last year in the final seven games of the season, right?
06:41And for the first couple weeks of that, he was week-to-week.
06:44Kevin Stefanski was playing those games until finally he relented and said, yeah, sure, fine, Shadur can start the rest
06:49of the season, whatever, who cares, right?
06:54And so, yeah, I think that Shadur just needs to keep doing what he's been doing, put in all the
07:02hard work that he has been putting in, continue to do that, continue to grow and develop behind the scenes
07:10and on the practice field.
07:11When those opportunities come, so that when we get to weeks four, five, six, seven, whenever it's going to be,
07:18and it is his time, he really will be in a much better position for success than what was handed
07:26to him last year, which was basically he was thrown to the Wolves.
07:30All right, Dale, the idea of Deshaun being the starter for the Browns for week one, obviously, Shadur first fans
07:38aside, we're just talking Browns fans first.
07:41How do you think the fan base reacts to Deshaun being named the starter?
07:45It's probably a good thing that the Browns are on the road for the first two weeks of the season.
07:51Now, if those two games go terribly, I would recommend the Browns start Shadur Sanders in week three for the
08:00homeowner.
08:01I would highly recommend that.
08:04Yeah, I don't know that one would look pretty.
08:05I don't know that anybody's signing up for that again.
08:07They go well, though, Daryl.
08:09Listen, my advice tends to be on point, and I highly suggest that if the first two games go belly
08:19up and it's unwatchable,
08:23they definitely should start Shadur Sanders week three at home and let him be the starter the rest of the
08:30season.
08:30In other words, a very tight, very short leash for Deshaun Watson.
08:37Now, Daryl, that can be your advice.
08:38Do you feel like the Browns actually operate under that protocol and Deshaun living on a short leash?
08:42Or does him be named the starter with Todd Munkin being the first-time head coach?
08:47Does that maybe probably give him a little bit extra of leeway?
08:50No.
08:51See, part of their problem is they don't take my advice, and they probably should.
08:55Things would go better for them if they did.
08:56So, no, I don't think that they will be looking at it through the same lens that I'm looking at
09:03it through, and that'll be too bad for them.
09:05But, yeah, because, look, I think if the first two weeks are bad, and then they come home and it's
09:12bad,
09:13like, do you really want fans booing and that in your home opener?
09:17Right?
09:18Right.
09:18Do you want that?
09:20No, you don't.
09:22So, that, like, and also, what are you doing right now?
09:25You're trying to sell PSLs and suites, and you're not even trying to sell tickets to your common fan right
09:33now for your new stadium.
09:34Your focus and attention is on the whales, okay?
09:40That's, you know, the gambling community, you know, the big spenders in the casinos, they call them the whales, right?
09:45Well, that's what the Browns are going after right now when it comes to their new stadium and the sales
09:50process right now.
09:53And, you know, so do you, when you're trying to extract that kind of money from the business community and
09:59the wealthy community
10:01that can actually afford to pay those prices, you want fans booing during your home opener
10:07if Deshaun Watson is bad the first two weeks and then he starts out bad in week three as well?
10:13I don't think so.
10:15To me, that's just bad, dumb, that's just dumb and bad business.
10:19That's how I look at that.
10:20But at least Shador Sanders is popular.
10:23And I realize you can't make football decisions based on popularity, even though the Browns, they have a long history
10:30of doing that.
10:33But if there's ever a time to go by popularity, this is the year, okay?
10:37The Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel year was not it.
10:40But this, this is the year where you want to go for the popularity amongst fans
10:44when you're trying to sell them suites and them club seats and all them fancy schmancy seating areas
10:51in your new stadium that's opening in three years, okay?
10:54Now's the time you want to go for popularity.
10:57You want people to be excited about your football team.
10:59And I, I just, I just don't see much from Deshaun in practice that gets me really excited about him
11:07as a starting quarterback.
11:09Daryl, when we watched him on Saturday, I mean, isn't something that we have to see at some point is
11:14Deshaun kind of unleashing it.
11:16It did feel maybe slightly adjacent, not quite just check down Charlie, but it felt like a lot of check
11:20down Charlie.
11:22Well, also some, some opportunities, right?
11:25Right.
11:25That he just didn't see there, there, there were opportunities with guys open and he just wasn't reading it.
11:33So, um, I mean, Todd Munkin is just, you know, tickled pink right now because he, you know, they only,
11:39they had that one pre-snap and, you know,
11:42he was able to do the cadence and the pre-snap and all that kind of stuff.
11:45Right.
11:45Which I don't know.
11:46Last time I checked, that's just basic being a quarterback stuff, but, you know, we're going to sit here and
11:50just, you know,
11:51ooh and ah over that stuff.
11:52Like, what are we doing?
11:54I, I just, you know, uh, I want to ooh and ah on, you know, throws and catches and things
12:00like that, you know, big explosive plays.
12:02Those are the things I want to get excited about.
12:04I don't care about your pre-snap operation.
12:05Just don't get penalties.
12:07Um, like that's just the basic, the basics of the job.
12:10So, um, yeah, yeah, that's just, that's just where I come out with this.
12:16And, um, you know, you'll see Deshaun in the third quarter and, and you know what, here you go.
12:21Jake, the third quarter is going to be pretty important Saturday.
12:24He should light up the Buffalo bills in the third quarter Saturday because the bills will be into like their
12:30practice squad by then.
12:32Right.
12:32And, and I, you know, that's what was so alarming about Dylan Gabriel Saturday in Chicago was that's, that's like
12:39the practice squad.
12:40And he barely, he couldn't function against the bears practice squad or, you know, guys that are, you know, roster
12:47spots.
12:47I don't know, 53 to 90, right?
12:50He couldn't function against those guys.
12:52That, that's what, that was very bad for Dylan Gabriel.
12:56Um, so, uh, sure Sanders at least showed the ability to function against those guys.
13:01So, um, yeah, it's, uh, the quarterback situation is not great, but, uh, it is what it is.
13:08And this is what the Browns have chosen to do.
13:10So we'll see how it works out for them.
13:12So, all right, Daryl, uh, and again, Daryl Ryder with us, but outside of quarterback, uh, Browns have now lost
13:17out on the Jadavion Clowney sweepstakes and the Zadarius Smith sweepstakes.
13:23Uh, why don't DNs want to play in Cleveland right now?
13:26Um, I don't know.
13:27Am I supposed to shed a tear over that?
13:29I mean, I prefer Zadarius over Clowney.
13:32I would agree.
13:33I don't care about, I'm, I'm actually glad Clowney didn't come back to be honest with you.
13:38We're good.
13:39Uh, I didn't like his attitude out the door and, uh, you know, that's a, even if he did speak
13:44some truth and I do feel like, uh, you know, I understood his frustration.
13:50Right.
13:51And, uh, but there, there are just things, there are just things you don't do and that, and you just
13:56don't do that.
13:57So, um, you know, Zadarius going down to Atlanta is kind of a little curious.
14:03Um, but, um, yeah, I mean, there's playing time here.
14:07Like, that's the thing.
14:08Like, there's going to be some playing time here if you do sign, uh, with the Browns.
14:13But they, uh, you know, I think Todd Munkett acknowledged today, they, they need some defensive line help in depth
14:18there.
14:19They need some help in the secondary right now.
14:21And I'm going to be honest with you.
14:22They need some help on the offensive line too.
14:25Like this, this starting five has not exactly blown me away.
14:29Now, either that or the Browns have the greatest, uh, defensive line since the steel curtain.
14:37Okay.
14:37And look, they're good, but like, it's, yeah, uh, uh, I'm, I'm a little concerned about the Browns.
14:43Oh, line.
14:44So you would lean more towards a concern for that group.
14:46And based on what we saw in a little bit of their work on Saturday here in training camp, uh,
14:51more so than just maybe a group that needs a little bit of time and is eventually going to put
14:55it together.
14:55Well, I mean, that's what I'm concerned about, right?
14:58They are going to need time to, to put it together, but you, you mix that with quarterbacks that don't
15:03process, uh, as quickly as you need to process.
15:06And that's just a disaster waiting to happen.
15:08Right.
15:09Um, and so, uh, you, you hope that you can get into the season to your point, right.
15:16Where they just get some games under their belt.
15:19They get used to working next to each other in, in, in that setting.
15:22It's a little different than being in practice.
15:24Right.
15:24Uh, and, and, and,
15:25and hopefully it gets better as the season goes on.
15:28And also too, hopefully they stay healthy.
15:30Right.
15:30Because I don't know that they have the depth right now to, to sustain injury, uh, in that group as
15:34well.
15:35Like the, the depth is not that good.
15:37It's not just the starting five.
15:39It's linemen six, seven, eight, maybe nine, depending how many Andrew Barry decides to keep.
15:46Uh, Daryl, Michael Jr.
15:48Back at camp today, he was obviously out for a while following the, uh, quench on Judkins little, uh, incident
15:54that they had gotten into.
15:56Oh, quench on got his today.
15:58That's why practice ended early.
16:00Yeah.
16:01You got paid back.
16:02Before I even get into my call there.
16:03What did my call might be saying?
16:05It might, might be sending Aiden Huntington, uh, a beverage or two to his hotel room tonight.
16:10Uh, yeah.
16:11What happened today at the end?
16:12Well, uh, someone got a little too close to Shadur, uh, and then, uh, Aiden, you know, bumped Quinchon pretty
16:21good.
16:22And Todd Munkin lost his cool.
16:24And that was it.
16:25And then I'll, I mentioned this in the YouTube recap today.
16:28I don't know what Todd Munkin said to him.
16:30I just heard a bunch of F bombs.
16:33Okay.
16:33I, those I heard, I couldn't tell what he was, you know, saying and talking about, but I did hear,
16:38I did hear a few select words.
16:40Okay.
16:41None of which I'm allowed to repeat.
16:43Um, and so he was clearly angry at the over aggression.
16:47He even yelled at Mike Rutenberg to the defensive coordinator.
16:50So that, yeah, I mean, that's the second time this camp that Todd has lost it and, and called off
16:57practice once was because the offense was a mess.
17:00And then this time, because the defense was getting a little too physical.
17:05All right.
17:06Well, good to know, Daryl.
17:07Obviously, uh, we'll be talking to you again next week, another training camp under the belt, maybe a starting quarterback
17:12named.
17:13And, uh, I look forward to it.
17:14From your lips to God's ears, may we have a starting quarterback by the next time we speak.
17:21We're going to be crossing our fingers.
17:23Thanks, Daryl.
17:23You bet.
