00:03so we have the uh the tarix scoobal stuff on the table there tarix scoobal saying that he doesn't
00:08want to be traded says he wants to be here and then there's the rest of the sentence which is
00:15for the rest of the season what stage of denial do you feel like he's in let me just say
00:19this too
00:20because i think this needs to be said because i had to be fair to scoop and on the show
00:24we are
00:24nothing but fair he says he wants to be here for the rest of the season and then offers a
00:29reason
00:29why because he thinks that they can win this season he thinks they can win a world series this
00:33year which you know as a statement that part's great the part where you say you don't want to
00:38be traded is great and then there's the part in the middle for the you want to be here for
00:43the rest
00:43of the season dot dot dot and that's what's got everybody kind of going what why would you say
00:47if you're saying it that way then yeah i think the tigers do need to to look at moving you
00:52out
00:52and you started to make a point about framer valdez and the contract that he got and you think you
00:58you think that's there that's it that's the that's the limit i think that's the evidence
01:01that scoobal doesn't want to be there because remember before that what we'd heard was oh
01:05they only offered him 20 million that that was what was out there right was arbitration but right
01:09okay but but for amber valdez 38 million a year three years 115 million okay like that's proof that
01:16scoobal doesn't want to be here because he could have received three years 150 50 million dollars a
01:21year that's the smart deal 20 of the 25 largest deals in major league baseball history have flopped
01:28and you want to give a guy that who already has two major arm injuries i know by the way
01:33the procedure he had this year is evidence of wear and tear on his elbow no thank you on this
01:39show we
01:39we doug and i are totally lockstep we don't want to give long-term contracts wait eight years is
01:44ridiculous six is probably my limit on schnitz and grubin let alone my limit on on how many years you're
01:49going to give somebody a contract yes it was a blazing saddles reference i'm sorry love it
01:5415 is my limit on schnitz and grubin um but six years is my limit on schnitz and grubin i'm
02:00not
02:00going to go more than six years on a contract for a pitcher because you like you said an arm
02:06is a
02:06tricky thing and when you get to free agency that's as far as i'm willing to go now to give
02:10somebody
02:11who's younger a deal like if i were if the tigers were to say we're going to offer troy melton
02:14a six-year
02:14deal i'm like yep go ahead and do it knock it down 100 go ahead do it because you've you
02:19might
02:19feel confident that this young man is going to be here for a while and and be performing but the
02:25the contract with scoobal i mean last year the problem was that they they couldn't negotiate a
02:30deal that's the problem scott boris would not listen to the tigers in trying to negotiate a
02:36long-term extension he wasn't having it so there was no three or 150 million dollar offer to be had
02:43because they wouldn't listen whether there was from the tigers standpoint or not there wasn't but
02:48that's on scoobal though he employs force it is but but i'm just going through the understanding
02:52why this is where they're at and then you know it gets to arbitration and you know the tigers in
02:59a
02:59position we're like okay major league baseball is advising the tigers because that's what major league
03:03baseball does they advise the teams because it's team it's this is this is the whole you know uh
03:09players association versus major league baseball thing baseball helps advise the team and the agent
03:14helps helps advise the player so baseball says don't forget the 20 million go back to 19 million
03:20or whatever it was that's what you you need to offer knowing full well that scott boris and company
03:26are going to go through the roof and and and ask for what they're going to ask for and they're
03:30going
03:31to get it but because all the all the evidence was in in tarek scoobal's favor so it's like whatever
03:38the negotiation was if it was deemed an insult who cares it was arbitration you're going to get
03:43what your number is anyway tigers had no chance to win and if the tigers had offered 25 million do
03:48you think scoobal that uh uh boris and scoobal were going to take it they weren't going to take
03:53a 25 million dollar deal for arbitration they knew they had them against the short by the short hairs
03:58they're going to take it for 30 something million 32 or whatever it was right but but long term you
04:04can sell scoobal on look man the highest paid pitcher that value is always changing you take a shorter
04:09term deal you're going to make more in the long run because we'll always keep you the highest paid
04:13pitcher in the game but right now it's zach wheeler at 42 but they can't because boris won't listen to
04:18it that's the problem he employs boris so at some point he's got to tell his agent to shut the
04:23hell up
04:23uh maybe yeah i mean we'd all like that i didn't know no issue there i'd love to tell him
04:28to shut up
04:29uh because scott boris is uh so tremendously annoying uh stan is in shelby township stan welcome
04:36971 hey thank you so much guys great to talk with you my champ is obviously eduardo valencia
04:43in addition to the five pretend he did home runs a home run against the best lefty in all of
04:51baseball
04:51and he shows that he hits the ball to all fields and i get short sample side in deference to
04:58uh
04:59you know karsh you know he's reminding me of jd martinez a late bloomer so i'm really excited
05:06second my chump go ahead you want to say i think jd martinez is an interesting cop but uh go
05:13ahead
05:13with your chump my chump is aj for a couple of reasons the simplest ones we have lived through the
05:21whole first half of where he has spouted analytics when pinch hitting for uh with jami uh jami jones
05:31on uh carpenter and colt keith yet on saturday they come up the bases loaded with a right hander
05:39pitching and carpenter and uh you know uh colt keith on the bench and allows the guy and this is
05:49in
05:49deference to listening to you yesterday mark he has a 0.081 batting average the lowest in major league
05:59history when hitting it with the bases loaded spencer torkelson minimum 45 plate appearances
06:07has the worst batting average in the history of major league baseball and then the other thing he did
06:12was uh you know friday night the significant play out of the box was mckinstry's punt on saturday we
06:22came up against a good pitcher and no outs valencia and uh how you leave all get base hits and
06:32instead of
06:33punting them with mal jerry he strikes out and then mckinstry runs into a double play and my point is
06:41on
06:41sunday soto does bunt sparks the big inning for philadelphia and i just think that aj when it comes
06:50to bunting he's just being arrogantly unflexible and reading what needs to be done well he likes some
06:58guys and thanks to call stan we're up against a break here i i think you like it hinch's style
07:03or
07:03you don't like hinch's style i think aj hinch is an outstanding manager uh i i think there are certain
07:08players you can bunt with and other players you don't bunt with i don't know mel jerry's success
07:14in the minors as a bunter if that was part of his repertoire or if he was one of those
07:18guys that no
07:19you're not bunting with with ben mel jerry i don't know and yes everybody should well everybody should
07:23be able to bunt yeah okay to an extent i agree but particularly somebody who comes up from the
07:27minors uh interesting jumping off point we'll get to more of that next here uh 248-539-9797 this is
07:33971
