After hearing what Skubal had to say, do you want the Tigers to trade him more?

00:08okay
00:11yeah this cody stevenhagen story in the athletic about scoobal and the elbow
00:17it doesn't read well for scoobal if you are just a fan of the tigers
00:25i want to read it and it's a long story with a lot of nuance in it
00:31and and things can be complicated and i'm not sure what he's truly admitting to here
00:37in the silence of january before the vortex was waging terrick scoobal realized something in
00:41his elbow did not feel right i knew something was wrong i didn't know what was wrong the story goes
00:49on to read consider this dilemma scoobal was a back-to-back cyan award winner entering his
00:53contract year with a chance to receive a record salary in arbitration his detroit tigers were
00:58projected to be amongst the best teams in the american league the baseball industry presumed
01:02that so long as scoobal made it through the 2026 season healthy he would eventually sign the most
01:06lucrative contract ever given a pitcher given all that scoobal did his best to ignore the symptoms
01:11to will them away looking back now in an alternate universe one without stakes and the frenzy bubbling
01:19in the distance scoobal might have gone done things differently quote if i could go back i probably
01:24should have got an mri in january and hammered it out to where i was done with it the off
01:29season
01:30but there were a lot of other factors at play i was going through arbitration the decision by the
01:35organization to take me to court i think that probably had some impact subconsciously
01:42why why is that a factor what do you mean why is why why is the arbitration a factor in
01:49whether or
01:49not you should get an mri because you've got discomfort in your elbow because you're a starting
01:54pitcher for a living because he's worried that the arbiter will side with the tigers because he's hurt
02:05and i think this is a case where maybe honesty wasn't the best policy
02:11closed mouth gathers no foot some people are going to be pissed i would imagine that he could have got
02:19the surgery done given their struggles when he was out
02:25that he i mean did he try and tough it out and i think where i like and we usually
02:31try you know i
02:32usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt when he says i think that probably had some impact
02:37subconsciously he's not coming out and admitting it but in retrospect he might be he might be saying
02:44here yeah maybe that impacted my decision to try and tough it out he's not fully admitting it right
02:51when you say subconsciously but still don't utter it yeah don't say you shouldn't have said it at all
02:56if you were my client i would say yeah i wouldn't say that there's a bit but there's a business
03:00aspect
03:01of it that almost never plays well with the fans when the business side of any sport gets in the
03:08way
03:09of what we want to see even though it's a reality people hate it yeah yeah well um
03:21i think people hate this more i i i don't like hearing this um and this is we heard weeks
03:28ago that
03:28he knew that there was i mean when he was going through it he said yeah i kind of felt
03:32something in
03:33january well hey maybe tell your employer what's going on but you're not going to because of arbitration
03:42or subconsciously or i mean that that's it's not subconscious that's the reason you're not telling
03:47him you're you're let's look at it logically okay try to look at this logical what you do for a
03:56living is pitch you pitch for the detroit tigers you're going to pitch for them the upcoming season
04:01even though you're you're going through arbitration but you're going to pitch for them based on either
04:06the number your camp is asking for the number the tigers are asking for you're going to be with
04:10this team they're your employer your arm is your living and something's wrong with it
04:19you don't hide that from everybody you'd be as transparent as possible because it is your
04:26livelihood well because you are going to be a free agent after the season you want to take care of
04:32us now asap find out at least what it is you could have a clandestine uh effort with a with
04:42an mri done
04:43i don't know if it's against the rules or not but i mean somehow yeah i would all parties to
04:47shut up
04:48about this that's that's probably what i would have recommended if he were my client is okay you're in
04:55the middle of arbitration you don't want this news to impact we don't want this news to impact your
05:00possible deal we don't know if this is serious or not i if you're an agent you can get your
05:06client
05:06a clandestine mri there's no question well i i i would also be logical to think that taric told his
05:15agent that he's hey i've got some discomfort maybe he did maybe he didn't and if he didn't
05:20i actually maybe feel better about it if he didn't tell boris but if you told boris i'm guessing
05:26that boris then said well by all means don't tell anybody let's start the season but does this add
05:33more to hey this is why he didn't pitch more in the world baseball classic he was limiting his arm
05:38as
05:38much as he could because he knew something was up with it i don't know and then you start the
05:43season
05:44you you look okay you don't look like the the cy young award winner of back to back but you're
05:50good
05:51but then all of a sudden hey um yeah something's up with the elbow let's get it checked out and
05:57then
05:57it turns out you're going to need this you know needle surgery or whatever the heck it was nano needle
06:03thank you and and and now he's now he's good to go he's great knock on wood he's back to
06:09being
06:09the tarix scoogle again the point is and this is the hard part to swallow
06:15is this is a team that struggled when he was out and he could have been out in the off
06:19season
06:20could have been out in the off season now what did he miss it was i don't know how many
06:26starts
06:26he actually made six or seven starts that he missed or more than that i'm not sure how many
06:30starts he missed but those are those are big yeah those are games that he would have been pitching in
06:37and would have been sitting on the uh in the dugout with the rest of the team helping him out
06:42best he
06:42can but he wasn't this i don't this is not a good look for terror no it's not but i
06:48i again like i
06:49immediately see this response here from twitch you're right gator him saying subconsciously is
06:54trying to save face as an excuse that's from debt 313 i think he if he's being i i take
07:01people at
07:02their word until i know otherwise and so i think by him maybe being too honest by saying maybe
07:09subconsciously that had something to do with it it very well could have been subconscious and i you know
07:15probably shouldn't have said anything at all probably shouldn't have said anything at all
07:18i would have advised my client we're never going to talk about this um and also would advise my
07:22client to get the mri done clandestine back in january but google is being way too honest by admitting
07:31this much you know and taking him for his word gator or doug you're right i mean i look i
07:36people always
07:37call me naive but when i'm judging people i want to judge them on what i know not what i
07:41think i know
07:42or think that it's the worst or think that it's the best i i'll take him at his word here
07:47now it's
07:47a bad look if you're a fan of the detroit tires and the team but if you're a tarik scuba
07:51if you're
07:51in his position i totally get where he's coming from you're trying to get you're trying to win
07:55arbitration right now you're in this to get as much money as possible then we'll deal with that later
08:01you know and so he played his cards right from that point of view but from this point of view
08:06where
08:06you're like hey how how does this affect the team yeah you're not going to be happy about that
08:10and i think that's what people worried about going into this whole thing anyways was how much are you
08:14worried about the team and how much you worried about yourself in getting paid like not pitching
08:18in the world baseball classic or not giving it everything in spring training or whatnot because
08:21you're worried about or even this whole season not giving everything you have because you're worried
08:26about what your next contract is going to look like well i have a different view and i meant i
08:31said
08:31this yesterday he doesn't want to get traded right he has said that publicly he said he wants to win
08:40here with his guys he wants to add okay all that is fine and dandy i have no issue with
08:46that that
08:46that's what he wants and he can but i hope the tigers don't not trade him for that reason and
08:53i can't
08:53imagine that they would but secondly and more importantly i want to see this guy make sure that
09:00there is zero question about whether or not you could have gone out in the seventh inning at 99 pitches
09:06like if you want detroit to run this thing to the end with you when everybody knows you're not coming
09:12back then you better run the thing to the end with us i'm i'm comfortable with aj hinch's decision
09:20because i trust aj and what happened last year in the postseason however this year there can be no
09:27questions there should be no debate there should be i'm giving it everything i can for this organization
09:33that did if they keep him and they add that did what i asked well the arbitration award he was
09:41awarded the arbitration uh win on february 5th
09:47and yes if you disclose that you have some sort of issue before you go to arbitration before the
09:54panel hears it it could affect your your your standing there of course it could but it's short term
10:01and if you know that this nano needle or whatever mike what is it was that right nano needle the
10:07nano
10:07needle was was likely to be successful and only keep you out for a month or two at most um
10:15you're
10:16banking on the free agent contract anyway right so you're just delaying that a little bit i guess in
10:21the meantime you're still going to get 19 million dollars but this is this is going to run people the
10:27wrong way i can understand why people are mad yeah i can understand why people are mad i'm trying
10:31to be as fair as we can possibly be i hear you yeah it's two different sides though it just
10:36depends
10:36if you're if i'm terrick scuba i totally understand 19 million is a lot 32 million is a lot more
10:40yeah
10:40you know and on top of that it's surgery how successful it may be it's still surgery you don't
10:46know how you're going to react after that so from scuba's point of view i totally get it from a
10:51pocketbook thing he played it right now from an organizational standpoint from a fan standpoint yeah
10:56you don't like that you don't like to hear this that's why i don't understand why this is even out
11:00there he never should have said he never should have said he just never should have said just go
11:05through it and like you know anybody asked you about it just i don't know man you started feeling
11:10something i don't know what it was yeah i don't answer questions
11:15i treat it like an investigation or interrogation from a police officer on a traffic stop
11:20i don't answer questions i don't agree to any searches seizures i mean it looks terrible for
11:28him to come out and say this stuff and it's out there i think it can be interpreted as as
11:32all
11:32as bad and you're right 100 right looking at from 360 degrees is it possible that it's all you know
11:39what he's saying is is honest like i think it might be he says i think i don't know maybe
11:43subconsciously that i think it was i think he is honest about it um but it doesn't make it a
11:50better
11:50look and it i would imagine this gives people that if people were on the fence about wanting to trade
11:57him or not probably tells them gives them that that edge to say yeah go ahead if you've been a
12:02if you've been critical of him for coming out after six innings in seattle this is not this just
12:07well if you're critical of him for coming out after six brilliant innings of work against seattle
12:11in that in that game five if you're critical about that then you're nothing he does is gonna
12:17is gonna endear him to you ever carson anderson 97 one
