00:06back to your phone calls coming up two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven
00:11tigers lose last night um you know winnable game it's a winnable game one that got away from them
00:17oh it was winnable casey mize uh pitched pretty well into the sixth then got in trouble and gave
00:22up the go-ahead runs half inch doug yep less than half an inch is what decided that game last
00:29night
00:29on the review yep no did you have him struck out look like he was struck out no half an
00:35inch
00:36and it was two pitches later um chisholm hit the home run yep and chisholm chisholm had quite a
00:44night when he slipped rounding second did everybody think he fell on dirt cam
00:50everybody thought so right after the whole game got him after the whole thing where he was
00:54freaking out about dirt cam and the in the dirt in the game on monday night when he slipped
01:00rounding second on tuesday everybody thought that was dirt cam's revenge right got him back
01:07uh ben maljiri first pitch single ended up with two hits decent debut that's a great debut yep and uh
01:16had a chance in the outfield to show off the arm to prevent the runner from scoring on a
01:20what would have been a sack fly attempt the runner thought better of it and that throw was perfect
01:25so good for ben maljiri a real nice debut for the tigers um in the meantime you have
01:35you have questions about somebody well
01:40let's just say that um you know watching runners on base i appreciate being aggressive on the base pass i
01:48think it's one of the things that has helped the tigers to get to the postseason two straight years
01:53they go first third better than any team in the league i don't i mean the times that guys get
02:00thrown
02:00out at third base they're few and far between right they've done a great job of that however
02:08coming home is a different story and last night there was a play was a base hit to left field
02:15and riley green is on second base running to third he's not at third base yet and bellinger's got
02:23the ball already in his glove and ready to throw before riley green even reaches third yet core has
02:29got his arm waving him home bellinger has all the time in the world sets up throws a makes a
02:37nice throw
02:37into home and riley green's out by seven feet you know that by the time the ball comes into the
02:44catcher
02:44there's all that separation now the catcher's just waiting for the slide to come in and he can tag him
02:50and if this just happened once in a while i wouldn't have an issue but this isn't once in a
02:55while this
02:56feels like okay in games i've watched recently this has happened several times dylan dingler got thrown
03:01out it was last week and it was worse than what we saw last night was like by 15 feet
03:07he was halfway
03:08down the line when the catchers got the baseball like dylan doing could have maybe put on the brakes
03:12and gone back to third base i'm worried that this is becoming an issue like he i think i think
03:18court needs to be reeled in i think does a great job of making sure that the runners are paying
03:22attention from first to third but he's got to be better at it's when he sends guys home and you've
03:29got to know what you you know bellinger's got a decent arm i don't you got to know what you're
03:34working with and i i suspect he does and maybe he just got overexcited i but it was a bad
03:39call
03:39because bellinger's got a good arm he's got a good arm in he's got a track record of being good
03:47at when to wave guys and when not in spite of what you might see last year the tigers their
03:54attempt
03:54percentage above average like when they would take that chance they had three of the top 11 players in
04:02baseball in the attempt percentage above average so trying to get that extra base they they were
04:09really good at it last year and and the truth is this year i think they have quite a few
04:14guys near
04:15the top as well i have to update the stats here um yeah kevin mcgonigal hold on wrong stat
04:25uh when sal perez is in the top 10 uh mcgonigal and mckinstry are ranked so i mean there's
04:35still pretty good i mean with the good comes the bad right when you are aggressive if you're going
04:41to be aggressive it comes with some risk yeah you're going to have guys thrown out when you're
04:45aggressive i i think what we've seen lately it's too aggressive well it feels like the and not just
04:49because they get thrown out it's like when an outfielder has the baseball in his hand before
04:55the the runner is rounding third that's a problem well then part c here's why i'm okay with it now
05:01the reason i'm okay with it i think the tigers are short on talent so they got to find other
05:05ways to
05:05create wins and being aggressive on the base pass has worked for them there's good and bad if they
05:12had if they had comparable talent to the best teams in the game i would say play more conservatively
05:16and let your talent speak so i'm willing to take the risks now with that said you can go too
05:23far
05:24and last time was a bad call on bellinger you can't run there he's got the ball in his hand
05:28and that's all i'm saying that was i think that was a bad call i don't think to answer your
05:32question
05:32i don't think it needs to get reeled in because i'm not sure they can win playing traditional
05:35baseball win big playing i'm not saying be conservative i'm just saying understand your
05:41situation and where the runner is when the ball is being fielded and i i just feel like it's almost
05:48a no-brainer that if you've got a guy that's just slightly above average and and running
05:55or maybe a little bit of above average and running and he hasn't hit the bag yet and you're waving
06:00him around and the outfield is already throwing a ball that's a problem that was a bad call it was
06:04a
06:04bad call but i'm not bad but i guess my point is i've seen this bad call several times now
06:10and i don't want to take away the aggression i just wish it was you're gonna be aggressive be
06:15aggressive with somebody who's a really good runner or be aggressive because the outfielder doesn't
06:21have a great arm i would hate to see them that combination did not work i would hate to see
06:25them
06:27lose what has been a competitive advantage for them because of some consecutive bad calls
06:35but i guess at some point you reach a breaking point and you obviously are considering this
06:39close to being a breaking point um ultimately that's aj hinch's call but i i'm trying to think
06:46other ways they can make up for their lack of talent against some more talented teams in a league where
06:50you just got to think if you're playing traditional baseball are you really if you're playing the same
06:57game they're playing are you really gonna win more often than not do you really have a chance to
07:04win and i feel like the answer is no they've got scouting reports on outfielders they know how
07:08well outfielders throw they've got all this stuff they know that the the speed of their own base
07:12runners they know they have all this right and it's a lot to calculate but they do have the time
07:17to calculate it and they know this i mean you're a third base coach it's your job to know how
07:21fast
07:22your guy is and if the balls hit the left field how strong that left fielder's arm is
07:26and make the call 248-539-9797 rich is in detroit and next on 97.1 hello rich what's going
07:36on fellas
07:37hey rich so a couple things can be true at one time uh the pistons draft just makes me look
07:47at
07:47uh last season proved that shooting uh three-point shooting uh stretch four is a huge need for this
07:57team uh and if if they go in and they don't have a a starter above tobias here so that
08:05four position
08:06um langdon to me did not do his job in the offseason but that pick yesterday is exciting to me
08:15uh because um i believe that this guy not only led the acc i thought what i looked up said
08:24that
08:25he set the acc scoring record uh i doubt for points per game for a freshman yeah for a freshman
08:36or all
08:37time i think for a freshman i think he set the freshman scoring record for the acc conference i think
08:45he just led the let's take a look uh notable single season freshman scoring total point averages
08:54number one abuka okori stanford there it is so uh when i think back i think michael jordan anthony
09:03davis cooper flag all these players who come out of the acc duke north carolina all of those
09:12historic schools historic schools these historic players if your name is anywhere up there um then
09:20there should be some excitement around your drafting uh and then not only that but in this year where all
09:29these teams have tanked to get at these draft picks from this year because it's quote unquote a historic
09:36draft this dude is tied for sixth in scoring in college for the whole country what what's the problem
09:48here i mean this guy is i think because his name like we didn't know his name going in and
09:56the the people
09:57the experts quote unquote weren't talking about him i don't know i mean on a surface level on a surface
10:05level looks like they got a special player and if he lives up to the scouting report my god is
10:09it going
10:09to help question is how fast that's a fair question it's a fair question how fast 248-539-9797 phone
