00:01All right, it's Carson Anderson outside Comerica Park.
00:04By the way, there is breaking Detroit Tiger news as, hey, guess what?
00:09Scoobal's going to pitch Saturday at Cleveland.
00:11There we go.
00:12Go to Jason Peck, MLB.
00:14He's going to pitch Saturday.
00:16That's awesome.
00:17I think we were expecting the news.
00:19I think A.J. Hinge wanted to confirm it, but he couldn't quite confirm it this morning
00:22until he met with Tarek Scoobal and the rest of the guys.
00:26Now it's confirmed.
00:27He will start Saturday.
00:29So how much time has he missed?
00:32Five weeks?
00:33Something like that.
00:34I mean, that's incredible.
00:36That's modern medicine, man.
00:38That's awesome.
00:39Good for him that it wasn't a major issue.
00:42Yep.
00:42And they can get him back and, you know, get this, keep this run going.
00:48Six and two in June.
00:49Let's go.
00:49Let's win the series today and take over Cleveland.
00:52Okay.
00:54So, look, the A.J. sound I thought was really good this morning,
00:58and he does a great job of addressing the criticisms because these guys are asking specifically,
01:05are you going to gear back your pinch hitting?
01:07It isn't working.
01:07And he basically said, no, I think he said, no, I think it's going to work.
01:12I think it's going to work for us.
01:14It hasn't.
01:15They're in the bottom third of baseball in pinch hit success rate.
01:18They've spent the last two years being in the top third in baseball in pinch hit success rate.
01:24It is what it is, right?
01:25I mean, it's what he does.
01:27This is like Dan Campbell on fourth downs.
01:28And I will tell you, when it comes to criticism of A.J. or Dan Campbell or any coach,
01:38I look at something that's illogical.
01:41And you do something that feels illogical in the moment.
01:46Because I don't want to just argue it based upon result.
01:49Right?
01:50The result, you could do something logical and it doesn't work.
01:55That doesn't mean it was a bad decision.
01:58Like, you know, because everything's not a thousand.
02:01You don't bat a thousand.
02:02Right.
02:03You don't have a thousand percent success rate.
02:05So arguing the result with the result as the reason why you're making the argument,
02:10well, it's a very safe place to be.
02:11When you do something completely logical in the moment,
02:14that's where I'll come in and say, this doesn't make any sense.
02:17When A.J. explains it, he makes it sound logical.
02:21He does.
02:22It's logical.
02:23No, it's completely logical, but I will take issue.
02:27And I don't think he'd have a problem with it,
02:29but I want to play the other cut before I say what I'm going to say.
02:32Because Jemai Jones is a guy that we've been talking about.
02:35His ineffectiveness this year has been over and over and over again.
02:37And one of us in particular, not me, has been really critical
02:43and had enough with Jemai Jones.
02:45It's nothing personal.
02:47No, it's just it's not working this year as much as it has in the past.
02:49Because he was great last year, and I loved watching him pinch it last year.
02:52And they've got a guy down at AAA, a journeyman that they could call up.
02:55I've got a bunch of guys at AAA.
02:56I know a lot of people want to see Max Clark, Max Anderson, want to see the kids.
03:00Those guys aren't going to come up here to be part-time players.
03:02Right.
03:02You need to season them and season them and season them until they're ready.
03:06If they come up here and are part-time players,
03:10A, there's a good chance they're not ready, and so they'll be ineffective.
03:13And B, you'll stop their growth when they're sitting on the bench.
03:16So, you go get the veteran 4A guy who's hot.
03:21In particular, the guy you keep bringing up is?
03:23Corey Jolks.
03:24But Jemai Jones is struggling, and AJ was asked specifically, what about Jemai?
03:39Jemai Jones is struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and
03:47he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling,
03:47and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's
03:47struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and
03:49he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling,
03:51and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's
03:54struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling, and he's struggling
04:21okay what do you make of that response all right so again i understand the logic behind it and and
04:27i applaud him and i don't want aj to aj hinch to change his thoughts i you know if you
04:32want to
04:32keep using pinch hitters that's fine what i want what i'd like to see because what i want doesn't
04:38matter but what i'd like to see is a change in who you're using it's that simple it's not the
04:45philosophy the philosophy i completely agree with you know when he talks about hey we want an advantage
04:49at bat yeah okay lefty lefty for carrie carpenter isn't very good but lefty righty for a guy who
04:56can hit lefties makes sense go get a guy who can do that and right now jami jones can't and
05:01so i
05:03take two things out of us first of all it confirms what i what i keep saying is that get
05:07somebody else
05:07to do it but also and this is me just reading maybe too much into what he just said i
05:13feel like
05:14the the experiment which my jones is about to end if he doesn't get it done against cleveland and
05:19houston because he's going to get plenty of opportunities to show that he can hit lefties
05:23because of all the lefties are going to be coming his way bingo he said literally we need him to
05:29produce and i think that is code for uh you better start hitting and i look i don't i don't
05:37i've said
05:39this all the time throughout the years one thing you've discovered is the teams organizations coaches
05:44are way more patient than fans way more patient than fans and still more patient than media like
05:52they are they will let things play out almost across the board way longer and sometimes they're
05:59rewarded for and sometimes they're not um and and an example is i was thinking back to some of the
06:05criticisms dylan dingler over the past couple years can't hit can't hit can't hit well well yeah and
06:11i'm not i'm not somebody who's rooting for my own narrative no i know i know you well enough to
06:16know that's the case yeah and and other people are going to be different but for me it's i'm not
06:20rooting for my narrative it's just it's something that's an observation i've made it's something that
06:24i think is in our position we have to call things out and be critical at times and this is
06:28one of those
06:28things nothing would make me happier if jami jones goes five for his next five with two home runs and
06:34a
06:34couple doubles and and all of a sudden shows that that's the reason why and that jj's patience is going
06:39to pay off i hope that's the case you know until until it's time for him to make the change
06:44but
06:44you know would i've made the change a while back i would have but i understand his philosophy why
06:49he's sticking with it based on a longer track record of what jami jones has been in the major
06:55leagues but this year it's been different either pitchers have adjusted to him because they've seen
06:59enough at bats and the book comes out on the player or jami jones isn't the one making the
07:04adjustments where he's just i don't know you know i can appreciate him saying oh he hit the ball hard
07:09last
07:09night but the results aren't there and if the results continue to not be there you're going to
07:14have to make a change so you know looking in the mirror i think one thing unfortunately that i get
07:18prone to is here you got a guy who's really honest makes it sound logical and i'm like okay i'm
07:26on board
07:27but it doesn't mean it's gonna work like i i appreciate his honesty a ton i guard myself against
07:37saying because of that honesty i'm i love the guy uh but i feel like he does a great job
07:43of
07:43opening the window into what he's thinking yeah uh but i look it's the number one criticism we get
07:49of aj hinch he addressed it this morning with very pointed questions from our morning show i want to
07:54know what you the tiger fan thinks of that of what he just had to say do you go okay
07:59sold me on it or
08:01you know what it doesn't matter it's a bottom line business and the results haven't been there
08:07and you know it's he is betting that the results will be there he is betting that they will start
08:14to get more production out of the guys that he that the cards that he plays when he plays them
08:19two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven got a bunch of texts on this
08:22watch your phone calls as well your reaction to what aj hinch had to say today hey news school
08:27back coming back saturday that is the breaking news this morning aj said in the morning show they
08:32would he would meet with scoobal and sure enough as we uh hit the first break today news was uh
