00:00There's been a lot of talk about heat waves and hot weather already this summer.
00:04Unsurprising, we're in our third heat wave of the year, and this is the longest one yet.
00:10High pressure firmly in control across much of the country at the moment,
00:14which is why we have so much sunshine and we have hot air across us as well.
00:18No wonder temperatures are so far above average.
00:21There is a frontal system towards the northwest of us bringing a bit more cloud, a bit of rain,
00:25but really high pressure, the hot air, that's going to continue with us through the end of the week and
00:30into the weekend,
00:31but the hottest air is shifting a little bit further westwards as we go through the next couple of days.
00:36Back to the here and now through Thursday evening.
00:39Yes, some clouds, some rain across northwestern parts of Scotland is pepping up a little bit as we go overnight.
00:45A few outbreaks of rain for Northern Ireland perhaps across the rest of the country.
00:49However, for the bulk of England and Wales, it's going to be a dry night.
00:53Largely clear, not totally clear, some cloud here and there,
00:55maybe even the odd pocket of mist and fog dotted around, but for most it will be a clear night.
01:00A big talking point, though, will be the temperatures.
01:02Last night, we didn't have a tropical night.
01:05It just about dropped below 20 Celsius everywhere.
01:08Meanwhile, this coming night, well, a greater chance perhaps around some parts of the London area
01:13could stay above 20 Celsius.
01:15Yes, technically a tropical night is quite likely, uncomfortable for sleeping.
01:19And even elsewhere, you know, temperatures for many, particularly in the towns and cities,
01:23holding up in the mid to high teens.
01:25So a very warm start to the day on Friday morning.
01:28But quite a cloudy wet one towards the northwest of the UK.
01:31Some further rain turning a bit more persistent.
01:33Some heavier bursts of rain as that feature drifts its way a little bit eastwards across the northern third,
01:39maybe half of Scotland.
01:40Likely to see a few outbreaks of rain across more southern areas and across Northern Ireland staying dry
01:45and across England and Wales staying dry with some decent sunshine as well.
01:49Not always wall-to-wall blue sky, but a fair amount of sunshine mixed in.
01:53Now, temperatures are going to be on the high side yet again.
01:56But as I mentioned, the highest temperatures, they're drifting a little bit further westward.
02:00So whilst still on Thursday, the peak of the heat was across central eastern areas,
02:04it's more across western parts by Friday.
02:07If we compare Thursday and Friday's highest temperatures or maximum temperatures with this chart here,
02:13and you can see down the eastern side, some places, well, several degrees lower,
02:16more comfortable perhaps for many places down the eastern side of the UK compared to Thursday.
02:22But on Friday, down the western side, well, some places, northern coastal parts of Devon and Cornwall,
02:27for example, could be around seven to eight degrees higher on Friday compared to Thursday.
02:34Later on Friday, more outbreaks of rain across northern parts of England.
02:37Need to highlight, actually, we could see one or two thundery showers developing across parts of England and Wales,
02:43but it's actually pretty unlikely that we'll see any of these developing.
02:47But it is staying cloudy and wet at times across much of Scotland,
02:50through into the early hours of Saturday morning, the odd spot of rain for Northern Ireland.
02:54Otherwise, yes, largely dry, just a bit of low cloud drifting in from some North Sea coastal parts
03:00that will push a bit further westwards through in the early hours of Saturday morning.
03:05Again, it is going to be a warm night, a little bit less warm than this coming night down the
03:10eastern side,
03:10but across western areas, temperatures, if anything, a little bit higher.
03:13So it could be a tropical night across some parts of Devon and Cornwall, for example, maybe south Wales as
03:18well.
03:20Saturday, then, a bit of rain across the northern areas, mainly Scotland,
03:24but some of the showers could develop across parts of southern Scotland, Northern Ireland,
03:28perhaps even northern England later on in the afternoon.
03:32Across the rest of England and Wales, though, it's another fine sunny day.
03:36Lots of sunshine on offer, a bit of a breeze towards the south coast coming in from the east,
03:41and temperatures won't be quite as high as they will have been through the last couple of days.
03:45So low 30s looks most likely for our absolute peak temperatures.
03:49But nonetheless, with that sunshine, high UV levels, something to watch out for.
03:53It is going to feel pretty hot indeed.
03:56Further north, a fresher feel with the cloud and the outbreaks of rain.
04:00Now, as we go through into Sunday, and high pressure is still going to be mostly dominant.
04:05So the frontal system that brings the rain as we go through the next couple of days, that's breaking up.
04:09So it's looking drier across northern parts on Sunday.
04:12And we still have that easterly flow coming in, so still some brisk winds around some south coastal parts.
04:17But the thing that I wanted to highlight is whilst the hottest air is starting to ease a little bit,
04:23it's not really going anywhere particularly fast.
04:25So we're still going to have some hot air across us,
04:28and temperatures still getting into the low 30s for some of us through the weekend
04:32and into the beginning of next week as well.
04:34Now, for more information about what we can expect with the continuation of our heat wave,
04:38why don't you check out our weather studio live, which the other Alex and I will be bringing to you
04:43on Friday at 12.15.
04:45Bye-bye.
