00:00Storm Goretti is battering the southern half of the UK. There's heavy rain, there's some significant snow building up, but most concerningly, some very strong damaging winds, which is why we've issued a rare red wind warning for parts of Cornwall as we go through the rest of today. And as well as this, we still have an amber snow warning out across parts of Wales and central England as we go overnight into Friday morning.
00:24Now, the lower itself deepened rapidly as it headed towards the UK and is now tracking eastwards across southern parts. It will clear away into the near continent as we go into the weekend with quieter weather for at least the start of the weekend. But we have more unsettled weather to come as we head through Sunday. More on that in a second. For the time being, let's focus on Goretti with the unsettled weather around across much of England and Wales.
00:49Rain is pushing its way northwards and as it goes, we're going to drag in more cold air from the north and so more snow developing across much of Wales and into the Midlands. Elsewhere across the southern half of the UK, lots of heavy rain around and those very strong damaging winds.
01:05gusts of 80 to 100 miles per hour across parts of the southwest as we go through this evening. All the time across northern areas, it's largely dry, not totally dry. There will be some showery bursts here and there, but mostly dry.
01:20Worth bearing in mind, there are lots of warnings out. Snow and ice across Scotland, ice for northern Ireland, rain for southwest Wales and also eastern parts of England and also yellow warnings for snow across much of Wales and the Midlands even into northern England and a yellow wind warning that covers the southwest parts of southern Wales and also across much of southern England as well.
01:42But I want to focus on the amber and red warnings. First, the red wind warning. Like I said, it's rare that we issue red wind warnings, but in the southwest, we're going to rapidly see the wind strengthening as we go through this evening, going from 30 to 40 miles per hour to gusts of 80 to 100 miles per hour.
02:01These are damaging winds. It's going to cause some major disruption. Do take care, particularly if you're in this red warning area, as well as this, this amber snow warning across parts of Wales into the Midlands because we could see 20 to 30 centimetres of snow building up, and that's enough to cause some significant disruption as we go into Friday morning.
02:21Overnight, an unsettled picture then across much of the southern half of the UK. As a result, temperatures here not dropping especially low, generally getting close to maybe a little bit below, a little bit above freezing.
02:31But further north, where we have drier, clearer weather, well, similar to last night, we could see temperatures dropping into negative double figures across some parts of Scotland. So a very cold start to the day here.
02:43Meanwhile, across the south, it's a wet, blustery start, but Goretti is clearing away towards the east. Takes quite a while for that rain across eastern parts to clear away, though, so it is going to stay wet here, and we could see some flooding as a result of that.
02:56Meanwhile, many other places turning largely dry, some showery bursts of rain, sleet, perhaps even some hill snow here and there, but also some glimmers of sunshine breaking through, though most places staying largely cloudy.
03:08It is going to be a cold day for most, temperatures for some in parts of Scotland staying below freezing. A fair bit milder than this, though, towards the southwest, where we could get to high single figures.
03:17As we go through the end of the day on Friday, we stick with some rain continuing across eastern parts of England. It is eventually going to fizzle out, and then we have some drier, clear weather across many parts.
03:30And because of that clearer weather, in a fair few spots, it's going to be a little bit colder than this coming night, so more widely seeing the frost developing with temperatures around or a little bit below freezing.
03:40Again, temperatures across parts of Scotland, especially where there's still some lying snow, could once more drop below freezing.
03:46There will be some showers here and there, and again, these are going to be a wintry mix, mainly towards the west, but also towards the east.
03:52Through Saturday itself, actually a lot of dry weather, still those showers towards some western parts and towards the east, still a bit of sleet, a bit of hill snow mixed in, but actually a lot of fine sunny weather for most parts.
04:03But there is a system waiting out towards the west, and it's worth bearing in mind Saturday is going to be a cold day, with temperatures several degrees below average for most, just a fair bit milder still towards the southwest.
04:15Now, as we go through the latter part of the weekend and this weather system towards the west, which has milder air with it, bashes against that colder air across us, well, we could see some disruptive snow.
04:26Some uncertainty about the timing of this, but nonetheless, it's worth staying on top of that, because there could be some further disruption as a result.
04:34Either way, it looks like things are going to turn milder as we go into next week, but before all that, do stay on top of the warnings in association with Goretti, because we are going to see some significant disruption.
