09 May - National Morning forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Good morning. I think one thing many of us will notice this weekend and into next week is the drop
00:06in temperatures.
00:07There's going to be quite a bit of a chill in the air, especially for the time of year.
00:11Currently, there is a cold front sitting across the UK, and this is bringing some rain to parts of northern
00:17England and southern Scotland.
00:19And it's also forming the boundary between milder air in the south and colder air across northern parts.
00:23That colder air will plunge its way southwards as we go through the weekend.
00:27So we wake up today, a lot of cloud, a lot of rain across parts of, yes, northern England, southern
00:33Scotland, where we have that front.
00:34A few outbreaks of rain across parts of Wales and into the Midlands.
00:37And that's what we're looking at as we go through the rest of the day.
00:40To the north of this, largely bright sunny skies across much of northern Ireland, much of Scotland.
00:45But do watch out for a few showers across northern parts of Scotland.
00:48And these could be a bit of a wintry mix, some sleet, a bit of soft hail, maybe even a
00:53bit of grauple, perhaps even to lower levels.
00:55And maybe some snow over higher ground further south.
00:58And a few sherry bursts of rain will be coming in from the south later on as we go through
01:03the afternoon.
01:04Now, temperatures in the south are still going to be a bit above average for the time of year.
01:08We still have that milder air here to the south of that front.
01:11So highs of around 22, possibly 23 Celsius, perhaps in some places.
01:15But much colder across northern parts, just about getting into double figures for some places.
01:21Some places for Edinburgh, for example, may just about stay in single digits.
01:25This front then kind of continues for a bit, but it is going to fizzle out and break up as
01:31it gradually pushes a bit further southward.
01:34So a few outbreaks of rain into the evening and the start of the night across parts of Wales and
01:39the Midlands.
01:39But largely turning dry through the early hours of Sunday morning.
01:43Meanwhile, across far southern parts, a bit of rain coming in and still a few showers across the far north
01:49of Scotland.
01:50And still these could be a bit of a wintry mix.
01:52Elsewhere, though, lots of dry weather, cloudier towards the south.
01:55And where we have that cloud, then it is still going to be a relatively mild night.
01:59Temperatures for quite a few places towards the south, holding up in double figures.
02:02Meanwhile, further north, it's a chilly night ahead, quite widely seeing a bit of grass frost and even a touch
02:08of air frost in some prone spots.
02:10So over the higher ground, even some of the sheltered valleys could see temperatures dropping a bit below freezing.
02:16So a north-south split when it comes to our temperatures and also sunshine amounts through Sunday morning.
02:21Sunnier towards the north, cloudier further south.
02:24There will be some rain coming and going as well across southern counties.
02:27But it doesn't look especially heavy and a bit of uncertainty as to exactly how far north it pushes through.
02:33All the while, the weather system coming in from the north is going to gradually make its way southwards through
02:40Sunday afternoon across parts of Scotland.
02:42And this could be a bit heavy at times.
02:44There could be some blustery winds mixed in with it as well.
02:47Also a bit of a breeze towards the south on Sunday.
02:49And this will make it feel even colder than the temperatures may suggest.
02:54Bearing in mind, these are several degrees, about six, seven degrees down, if not more, compared to Saturday.
03:00So a bit of a chill, especially when you factor in the wind, albeit across more central parts of the
03:04country, actually the winds are pretty light.
03:07But here, despite the fact that there will be some sunshine, temperatures only just about scraping into double digits.
03:12Those temperatures well down on what we'd normally get at this stage in the year.
03:17As we go into next week, then, we are going to see that weather system across northern parts continuing to
03:22make its way further southwards through Sunday night and into Monday.
03:25So there will be a bit of rain around at times.
03:28It doesn't look especially heavy for the time being.
03:30But one thing that we can see quite clearly is a continuation with the northerly winds.
03:35So our air continuing to come down from the north.
03:37And so temperatures are going to stay on the low side, perhaps even dropping a little bit lower for some
03:42of us.
03:42So a bit of a chill in the air as we go through next week.
03:45But of course, we will be keeping you up to date with the forecast.
