00:00Hello, very good morning to you. Storm Goretti is on its way, arriving later tomorrow and affecting us through tomorrow and into Friday, bringing some strong winds and some significant snow to central and perhaps southern parts.
00:13But before that, actually, there's a lot of dry weather around today. Worth factoring in if you're about to head out the door.
00:19Some icy surfaces, a lot of slippery conditions out there, similar to some recent starts. Much of the UK being affected by ice this morning.
00:28And then, yes, it is largely dry, but we're factoring in a few showers, which could be a bit of a wintry mix for some over parts of central Wales and central England.
00:37And then we continue with snow piling in across northern Scotland through much of the day.
00:41We could see a further 15, 20 centimetres on top of what we already have in some parts.
00:46So that's likely to cause some more disruption here. Otherwise, like I said, yes, it's largely dry.
00:51A good deal of sunshine on offer as well. And temperatures, if anything, well, they're going to be a degree or so higher than yesterday and more than that towards parts of the southwest,
01:00turning markedly milder here. But elsewhere, still cold, but not quite as cold as it was yesterday.
01:06Except we do need to factor in the strong winds, gusty winds, gales possible in some exposed parts towards the northeast.
01:13Those winds will make it feel even colder and they are likely to lead to some drifting, some blowing snow over parts of Scotland.
01:20So that's an extra hazard as well.
01:22As we go through later today, we are going to see more cloud building across Northern Ireland and parts of southwest England, Wales.
01:28That's because there's a weak front that pushes in.
01:30That will also bring some outbreaks of rain, but it kind of fizzles out as it makes its way across the country.
01:35So it doesn't push too far in, just bringing a bit of damp weather perhaps to parts of Wales and central southern England as we go through the early hours of tomorrow morning.
01:44Elsewhere, most places largely dry, but quite a bit of cloud.
01:48Seeing most of the snow across parts of Northern Scotland, which has continued for a fair while, that will start to ease and fizzle out as well.
01:56So turning mostly dry here.
01:58Despite the cloudier skies than the night just gone, there's colder air around us.
02:03So a fair few places will be a couple of degrees colder than it was last night.
02:08As a result, again, frost, ice, that will be a cause for concern in quite a few places.
02:14Still some slippery conditions as temperatures, even in some more built-up areas, dropping below freezing and in rural spots, dropping several degrees below freezing.
02:23And so then tomorrow, a cloudy, cold start for many places.
02:26A little bit of wet, perhaps wintry weather here and there.
02:29But our attention is really turning to the feature that's coming in from the southwest.
02:33Storm Goretti, named by the French Met Service because it's in France where we're going to see the strongest, most impactful winds.
02:40But nonetheless, it is going to bring wet, windy and wintry weather to central southern parts of the UK.
02:47As that rain pushes its way in, it hits against that cold air that we currently have across us.
02:51And so on the northern edge, we are likely to see some fairly significant snow as we go through later tomorrow and into Friday.
02:59Now, exactly where this system pushes in, how far north it gets, well, that's still all to play for.
03:05And so exactly where we see that significant snow, that's still a little bit uncertain.
03:09But the risk is there.
03:11Also, the risk of strong winds.
03:13We already have a wind warning out.
03:14That's because gusts could reach 60, 70 miles per hour around exposed parts of the southwest and south Wales.
03:21It is still going to be cold away from the southwest.
03:24Here it's actually relatively mild, perhaps.
03:27But elsewhere, still cold with temperatures for some perhaps remaining below freezing,
03:31particularly where there's still some lying snow over parts of Scotland.
03:34But then what does Storm Goretti do?
03:36Well, the low pressure itself drifts its way eastwards across the southern parts of the UK.
03:41But all the time, as the northern edge of that rain hits against that colder air, we're going to see some significant snow.
03:48There are already warnings out for snow across parts of central England and Wales.
03:52That's because we could see 20 centimetres, maybe a bit more.
03:55That's enough to cause some severe disruption before the feature clears away as we go through later Friday and head into the weekend.
04:01Now, the warnings for both the snow and ice that we have around at the moment and also for Storm Goretti,
04:06they're going to get tweaked and updated.
04:08So definitely worth staying on top of those.
