09 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good morning to you. The strongest winds from Storm Goretti have now passed,
00:06but we're still seeing some significant snow building up. The feature is now across parts
00:11of southeastern UK. It's clearing away towards the east as we go through today, but nonetheless
00:16still a fair amount of snow across parts of Wales and parts of the Midlands still to come,
00:21and there will be some winteriness in other places. Also watch out for heavy rain affecting
00:25eastern areas. We could see some flooding, some further travel disruption, and whilst
00:29the strongest winds have eased, it is still going to be quite windy across eastern parts
00:33as well. Otherwise, we do have drier weather following in behind, some sherry bursts of
00:37rain, sleet and hill snow across parts of Wales, northern England, and further wintry showers
00:42across some coastal parts of Scotland too. But yes, it is turning drier for quite a few
00:46places, and there will even be a bit of sunshine breaking through. Some brighter spells for
00:50some, some sunshine across parts of Northern Ireland and maybe towards southwest England
00:54and Wales later on. Temperatures near normal towards the southwest, so high single figures
00:59just about, but elsewhere it is going to feel pretty chilly. Temperatures for some where
01:04there's lying snow over parts of Scotland likely to stay below freezing, so feeling pretty raw
01:09indeed. Then as we go through into this evening, storm Goretti does clear away fully, and it takes
01:15a little while for the rain in the east to fully clear away, but it is going to fizzle out
01:19and turn mostly light with just some sherry bursts. But even here, they could have a little
01:24bit of a wintry element to them. Also, a few sherry bursts across some western areas, Northern
01:29Ireland, western Scotland, feeding down through Wales and southwest England, and again, they
01:33could have a bit of a wintry element too. Elsewhere though, lots of dry, clear weather, and where
01:38we get those clear skies, well in some places it's going to be a fair few degrees colder than
01:42it was through last night. So a more widespread frost, quite a bit of ice around, do watch out
01:47for that because of the wet surfaces after all the rain that we've had through the last
01:51well, 24 hours or so. And also again, similar to last note really, where we have lying snow
01:57over parts of Scotland, temperatures could once more drop into negative double figures,
02:02so a very cold night to come here again. So a cold, frosty, icy start for many of us tomorrow,
02:09and we still have cold air across us, so that cold thing continues through much of the day.
02:13As a result, yes, there will still be some sherry bursts towards both the west and the east,
02:18and these could have a bit of a wintry element to them, mainly over higher ground, but not confined
02:23to higher ground. Towards the north could see a little bit of sleet and snow to lower levels
02:27as well. Actually, a good deal of dry, bright weather away from those sherry bursts, but worth
02:32noting there is a weather system that's coming in from the west, and that's going to arrive
02:36as we go through Sunday, bringing some wet, but also perhaps wintry weather, some disruptive
02:41snow as possible, as that hits the colder air across us. Like I said, colder air across
02:46us, so temperatures still suppressed, most places staying in low single figures, just
02:51getting to mid, possibly high single figures towards the southwest of the UK.
02:55As I mentioned, we do have this weather system towards the west bashing against that cold air
03:01as we go through this weekend. Bit of uncertainty as to exactly when that's going to arrive, but
03:06we're going to have mild air eventually making its way across, more likely sometime through
03:11Sunday, perhaps later Sunday. And as that pushes in, well, that brings the potential for some
03:16rain, yes, but also some disruptive snow. Thereafter, well, things are set to be milder as we go
03:22through next week, but there has been a little bit of uncertainty about that, so definitely worth
03:26staying on top of the forecast. I'll see you again soon. Bye-bye.
03:29Bye-bye.
