08 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Storm Goretti is pushing across particularly the southern half of the UK as we go through the rest of Thursday into Friday.
00:07Lots of warnings out, including an amber wind warning across parts of the southwest and an amber snow warning across parts of Wales and the Midlands.
00:15Now, looking at the earlier satellite imagery, and it's this swathe of cloud, which is Storm Goretti.
00:21If we put on the isobars and we can see the low itself at five o'clock this morning, it wasn't actually that developed.
00:28But over the last few hours, it's gone through something called explosive cyclogenesis.
00:34As it's pushed its way towards the UK, it's deepened rapidly.
00:38To count as explosive cyclogenesis or a weather bomb, it needs to deepen.
00:42So the centre of the low needs to deepen by at least 24 hectopascals in 24 hours.
00:48In this instance, we're looking at it deepening by around 30 in around 18.
00:53So it is really intensifying.
00:55And that's why we're seeing some heavy rain, yes, but also some very strong damaging winds.
01:01These winds are going to strengthen increasingly across parts of the southwest, especially as we go through the rest of today.
01:08Now, as well as the rain, we also need to be prepared for some snow.
01:11We have colder air cutting in from the north.
01:14So initially across parts of Wales, but later on into the Midlands, we are going to see some of that rain falling as snow.
01:19And some significant totals are expected.
01:22Across much of Northern Ireland and much of Scotland and northeastern parts of England, it's actually largely dry.
01:28A few showers here or there, but also some glimmers of sunshine to be had.
01:32But it is also going to be cold.
01:34Temperatures in some places, particularly where there's lying snow over parts of Scotland, staying below freezing.
01:40Markingly milder towards the southwest.
01:42But obviously, with those very strong damaging winds, it's not going to feel particularly mild at all.
01:48Then as we go through this evening, the winds strengthen further across parts of the southwest.
01:53This is when we're likely to see the strongest winds across parts of Cornwall and also across the south-southwest.
01:59In total, we are looking at some very windy conditions indeed.
02:03More snow developing across parts of Wales and the Midlands.
02:07And then the wet weather pushing its way eastwards across some eastern parts of England as well.
02:13All the time, staying mostly dry further north, just a few coastal showers.
02:17Now, there are many warnings out.
02:19We have snow and ice across parts of Scotland.
02:21Ice for Northern Ireland.
02:23Rain for both eastern England and also southwest Wales.
02:26A large snow warning, a yellow one across much of Wales, the Midlands, into northern parts of England.
02:32And also a yellow wind warning across parts of the south-southwest.
02:36But it's the amber warnings that I wanted to look at in a little bit more detail.
02:40Across this central part of Wales, towards the east as well, feeding into parts of the Midlands.
02:46It's in this area as we go through particularly the early hours of Friday morning
02:50that we have the greatest chance of seeing some significant snow.
02:54We're talking 20, 30 centimetres building up.
02:57Meanwhile, in the southwest, as we go through the latter part of Thursday,
03:00we're seeing the winds really strengthening.
03:02We're likely to have damaging winds.
03:04This is a notable event.
03:07And we could see gusts of around 100 miles per hour in the most exposed parts.
03:11That's really going to cause some problems if those extreme winds do come off.
03:16Then, as we go through the second part of the night,
03:19the most extreme winds, they will start to ease.
03:21But it is going to stay windy across southern and then later southeastern parts.
03:25A lot of the unsettled weather, it starts to push away towards the east.
03:28But it stays wet.
03:29It stays wintry in some areas, particularly across parts of Wales, the Midlands,
03:33and perhaps some parts of northern England too.
03:36All the time, largely dry across as much as Scotland, Northern Ireland.
03:39Still just a few showers around.
03:40But there is going to be quite a marked temperature contrast across the UK tonight.
03:45Southern areas are staying around freezing.
03:48A little bit below in some places, a little bit above in a few others.
03:51But across parts of Scotland, similar to some recent nights,
03:53we could get into negative double figures, minus 11, minus 12 Celsius.
03:57So a harsh frost.
03:59Well, there's going to be a lot of lying snow continuing here.
04:01And that's why those icy conditions continue as well.
04:04Then through Friday, a lot of the more unsettled weather clears away towards the east.
04:10But it is going to stay wet down that eastern side of the UK, which is why we do have a rain warning
04:14with the potential for some flooding, further travel disruption here.
04:18Otherwise, something a bit drier than we have through much of today for many places,
04:23albeit a few showers.
04:24And some of these could be falling as sleet or snow over modest high ground in particular,
04:28and also the further north.
04:29But even some snow showers likely across parts of Wales.
04:32Also, some glimmers of sunshine breaking out towards the west.
04:35But for many, it is going to be largely cloudy.
04:38Still quite blustery, but not as windy as it will have been through today.
04:42Still cold across northern parts temperatures, but low freezing in some places.
04:47That's the maximum temperatures.
04:49Further south, a bit milder than further north.
04:51Not as mild as on Thursday, but perhaps feeling less unpleasant for sure,
04:57with some glimmers of sunshine breaking through and much, much lighter winds as well.
05:01That feature then clears away towards the east as we go through the end of Friday.
05:06There is the potential for more unsettled weather to come this weekend.
05:10Saturday's looking cold.
05:11And then as the system bashes against that cold air on Sunday,
05:15well, that could bring some further disruptive snow.
05:17For more information about that, check out our weekend forecast,
05:20which Alex Deacon will be bringing to you later on.
05:22Bye-bye.
