06 January - National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. The wintry weather is going to continue to bring some significant hazards in a fair few places.
00:07We have an amber snow warning out across parts of Scotland with yellow snow and ice warnings out across much of the rest of the country.
00:15There's low pressure to the north of us and there's also a front making its way southeastwards.
00:20This front is bringing a lot of that snow across parts of Scotland.
00:23It's also going to bring some outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow to other places as well.
00:27It's crossing Northern Ireland at the moment, pushing into parts of England and Wales.
00:32And like I say, a wintry mix, particularly over the higher ground of northern England, further south and to lower levels, it's mainly going to be falling as rain.
00:40The most impactful weather is set to be across parts of Scotland.
00:43We do have a significant amount of snow still to come.
00:47If we look at that amber warning now, it's in two chunks and it talks of the potential for a further 5 to 10 centimetres quite widely
00:54and perhaps 15 centimetres above 200 metres.
00:57That's on top of the significant amount of snow that we already have.
01:01So further severe transport disruption and other issues are set to continue as we go through today.
01:07It is a cold day.
01:09Temperatures well below average for the time of year.
01:11There was a lot of frost, a lot of ice around this morning.
01:13And in places that ice is going to continue through much of the day, particularly across some eastern parts here.
01:18Temperatures well below average.
01:20Temperatures well below average across some western areas, ever so slightly milder than on Monday, but still feeling pretty cold indeed.
01:27Then as we go through the evening and overnight, that front continues its way south and eastward.
01:31So further outbreaks of rain, bit of sleet, bit of hill snow making its way across parts of England, eventually clearing away towards the east.
01:38Wrapping around that area of low pressure, that front continues and then brings more showery, rain sleet and mainly snow across parts of Scotland.
01:48And so the snow risk continues, particularly across northern areas as we go through the early hours of tomorrow morning.
01:53Otherwise, actually, a lot of dry weather around.
01:56Yes, a few spots of rain here and there, but a lot of dry weather, a lot of clear skies.
02:00And so, yes, it is again going to be another cold night, perhaps not quite as cold as some recent nights.
02:05But nonetheless, whilst most towns and cities may just about hold up a little bit above freezing, many rural spots will dip below.
02:12So again, there's going to be some ice around first thing on Wednesday morning.
02:17Then otherwise, as we go through Wednesday, a fair few snow showers continuing across parts of northern Scotland in particular, some of them feeding further southwards into some central parts too.
02:26A few spots of rain otherwise early on, but a lot of them clearing.
02:30And then actually a lot of dry, sunny weather around as we go through the day.
02:33But it is still going to be cold, not quite as cold as today for many.
02:38Temperatures may be a degree or so higher, but still a chilly feel for sure.
02:43And we have some strong gusty winds towards the northeast, touching gales in some places here.
02:49As we go later on in the day, there's going to be cloud pushing in across western parts of Northern Ireland and across parts of southwest England and southwest Wales.
02:56And a bit of rain arriving as well.
02:58Then later this week, as we go into Thursday, potential for a deep area of low pressure to track somewhere towards the south of the UK.
03:06And that's set to then bring a multi-hazard event.
03:09So we're talking strong winds, significant rain and also some further snow.
03:14There's also the potential for some further snow as we go through this weekend.
03:18But if you want more information about all of that, well, check out the deep dive, which Aidan will be bringing to you later.
03:23Bye bye.
