00:00Sonic X Episode 4
00:02So Chris took this long to understand that Chaos Control sent the heroes to his world.
00:07He's talking as if only just now has he been told how they got here.
00:14The heroes have been the star of the episode talking about the Chaos Emeralds.
00:18Which they've only just now started talking about.
00:21So why do they think the Emeralds are on this planet?
00:25Well at least Chris is saying if they're on this planet.
00:28But they're just assuming this.
00:30Probably because the Emeralds were caught in the Chaos Control when Eggman was.
00:34And it's odd that Chris is talking all hopefully about the possibility of Sonic getting back home.
00:40That's the exact opposite of foreshadowing.
00:43Though he could have changed his mind.
00:46We see that a Chaos Emerald was found by a construction crane.
00:49And at least when the President wants Sonic and his friends captured for no reason.
00:53He listens to Agent Flipsey over here when he tells him that it'd be smarter to just monitor Sonic's activities.
01:00Then he says that he's dispatching an undercover agent to monitor Chris.
01:05I guess the reason they know Chris is even involved with the heroes at all is because he was seen
01:09on the convenient close-up on the camera footage with Tails in his plane last episode.
01:14Chris finds out that his teacher was forced to retire.
01:17And he got replaced by an inexplicably sinister looking government spy who...
01:22I guess he had a teaching degree?
01:24Because otherwise why would he be allowed to be a teacher just like that?
01:28He tells Chris that it's a privilege for him to meet the son of such distinguished parents and shakes his
01:33hand.
01:35This is much more boring than how Sonic F does it where he just gives him a whole bunch of
01:39cruel insults out of nowhere and scares Chris into running away from him.
01:42But it is a lot more realistic to have him act like a normal teacher.
01:46Government agent or not.
01:48Anyways, contact with the construction crane makes the worker lose control of it.
01:52I don't know why.
01:54Archie also had this common theme where Chaos Energy is just a complete dick.
01:58And here, the Chaos Emerald is such a jerk that it for no reason makes the construction crane go crazy
02:03and makes people run scared.
02:05It's even said that the crane has a mind of its own.
02:08So is that literal?
02:10Does the Emerald infuse things with life like the life Emerald in AOSCH?
02:15Scarlet does a report on what happened with the duel and she says the Emerald appears to be radiating an
02:20invincible, highly charged energy.
02:24And the static on the TV report is a direct result of the Emerald's power.
02:28So that's how she knows why it's radiating invisible energy.
02:32I was about to make fun of it because it's invisible.
02:35So how would they ever get the idea, aside from the crane being taken over, that it's radiating energy?
02:40Cream decides to tell Sonic about the report, because otherwise the plot wouldn't go anywhere.
02:45And Eggman uses the report to find out where the Emerald is.
02:48Well, at least one of Eggman's robot sidekicks having a boring, monotone robot voice is a lot less ear-grading
02:54than the scratching grounder impersonations from Sonic F.
02:57But I'd rather listen to those.
03:00An Eggman using cards and slots to choose which robot to use for the episode is whimsical and charming.
03:07But still, logically that would mean he'd choose the wrong robot for the situation and it'd fuck him over.
03:13You'd think not every robot in the reel would be a good choice for every situation.
03:18Like, what if he needs a drilling machine and picks a flying machine?
03:22I guess he doesn't actually plan to use it in situations where he only needs a specific machine.
03:27Then he'd just choose that machine to begin with.
03:31The heroes go on a plane in a plan to find the Emerald.
03:34Unfortunately, Sonic is apart from them and runs around on his own, because naturally he should be able to find
03:39the Emerald faster.
03:41Never mind.
03:42He jumps way too high to make sense, because I guess that's Sonic X Sonic's superpower,
03:46and decides to waste precious time waiting for Tails and Amy.
03:50Why?
03:51Isn't he supposed to be an aloof ally?
03:53Instead, he stupidly wastes time standing on a high place when he could have found the Emerald by now.
04:01He can run at the speed of sound.
04:02Why can't he just find the Emerald immediately by checking every construction site?
04:06This plot would be over in two seconds.
04:09Instead, a lot of time is wasted, and then Chris sees Eggman's purple plane in the window.
04:15Chris just says he's gotta do something, which is a lot less funny than the pathetic excuse he gave in
04:20Sonic F.
04:22Realistically, no teacher would put up with that excuse to leave.
04:26Really? He didn't even ask to go to the bathroom?
04:28But this teacher just wants to spy on him, so he does so, leaving a bunch of students unsupervised in
04:34the process.
04:35Sonic jumps across a couple roofs, and just now decides to look for the Emerald, just because he sees the
04:40plane!
04:41There really is a lot of wasted time.
04:44Finally, Sonic sees that Eggman's gotten involved.
04:47He's running remarkably slow here, you'd think it'd be a blur right now.
04:51Eggman spots him jumping around the rooftops of skyscrapers for no reason, when he'd obviously cover a lot more distance
04:57running along the ground.
04:59And Eggman decides to send the flying robots up to Sonic.
05:02One of them hits away Sonic in the sky and starts juggling him to humiliate him.
05:07Here, it's taken seriously with the music.
05:09But it was a lot funnier in Sonic F. with the comical circus music.
05:14Here, it's just violins and trumpets.
05:17Sonic can't even catch the ring Amy threw at him, and he falls away.
05:21And Tails and Amy waste precious time talking to each other, instead of Tails immediately flying the plane down to
05:27try to catch Sonic.
05:29Sonic really would be better off having a backpack for the ring like in Sad AM.
05:33And it could even be a different looking one.
05:36But instead, he relies on his friends.
05:39Chris finds the Emerald before Eggman.
05:41I'm surprised Chris didn't hear Eggman.
05:43I thought Eggman was talking right in front of him.
05:46He dug it up.
05:47Chris wastes time staring at the Emerald for no reason, just to justify him getting it stolen from him.
05:52And he ends up holding on to the base of the Eggmobile taking along with him.
05:56Finally, the plane catches Sonic and gives him a ring, giving him the power to dive down and spin dashes
06:01right through the plane.
06:02What kind of formula is that where they take forever in a tense group of action scenes until finally the
06:08hero gets something that lets him win in one measly hit?
06:11He should earn his victories.
06:13At least he was made a joke before that point, so he's not too overpowered, but just barely.
06:18Chris struggles on the Eggmobile, climbing up it, being oddly more heroic than Sonic seems to be because it's very
06:24courageous and impressive that even a normal human kid like us would try to inconvenience Eggman in this kind of
06:29situation.
06:30He's not just being a kidnapping victim, he's actually trying to get the Emerald back.
06:35You'd think Eggman would have done a better job shaking him off right away, but whatever.
06:39He grabs Eggman's mustache and ends up falling with the Emerald.
06:43And somehow he starts falling headfirst, which you'd think would be a guaranteed death sentence for him.
06:48Chris's teacher opens up some pillows that were conveniently in his back seat, but Sonic saves him instead by merely
06:54catching him.
06:55Which is totally unrealistic.
06:58All that would do is kill him.
07:00It's not the fall into something that kills you, it's a sudden stop.
07:03And that would be a sudden stop.
07:05Wasn't he falling headfirst?
07:08The teacher arbitrarily says that it's good someone else is looking out for the kid, instead of being angry that
07:14Sonic stole Thunder like I expected.
07:16That's boring.
07:18Now come on, Chris would have been more likely to survive if they let Mr. Stewart save him instead.
07:23Instead they set up a Chekov's gunman just to have Sonic save him instead.
07:28Why is Chris trying to apologize for losing the Emerald when they got it back before Sonic would have ever
07:32noticed?
07:32He lost it for like a minute.
07:34Even if there was no excuse for him losing it.
07:37I don't like that he blushed when Sonic replied to him.
07:40And I liked it better in Sonic F when Sonic lampshaded that Chris saved the day while following his birth
07:45looking completely ridiculous.
07:47Wow, a lot of time was wasted at the end of the episode where music was playing and the heroes
07:52weren't saying anything.
07:53Who thought this was a good idea?
07:56Well, at least they let someone other than Sonic be useful for once.
08:00Eggman sent a flying plane to go get the Chaos Emerald when it got spotted in a construction site.
08:05Logic would dictate that the plot would be over in two seconds, because Sonic would run all around the city
08:09and find it himself.
08:11But instead, somehow he wastes a bunch of time jumping around the rooftops much slower than he would if he
08:16ran around the ground.
08:19So Eggman somehow manages to find the Emerald instead.
08:22I loved the twist where the Emerald took control of a construction crane with his mysterious energy.
08:27It's cool that they try to have unique lore with the Emeralds like that where they're kind of threatening.
08:32But either way, Sonic ends up getting humiliated by the flying planes because he was a complete idiot and stayed
08:36where they get at him.
08:38At least until he's given a ring, at which point he annihilates the plane just one hit because earning your
08:42victories is for chumps.
08:44I love that Chris got to be surprisingly useful by getting the Emerald, and even pulled Eggman's mustache in the
08:49process.
08:50But it was completely unrealistic that he survived landing in Sonic's arms.
08:54And after falling headfirst at that, when did he reorient himself again?
08:59It would have been slightly more logical if he survived because he fell into those pillows that Mr. Stewart conveniently
09:04thought to keep in the backseat of his car for this exact situation.
09:08But instead of them actually using the Chekhov's Gunman they set up, they just make Sonic do all the work.
09:13I say that after Tails gave him a ring, but when it comes to this episode, I feel like you
09:17could replace Tails with a backpack for Sonic's ring whenever it comes to ring-handing duties.
09:22And things would actually be a lot better, and make a lot more sense.
09:25It puts a lot at risk by just trusting his friends with the ring and hoping they'll give it to
09:29him successfully every time.
09:31It seems like while this story was entertaining to watch because of all the tension of Eggman's planes, there was
09:36a lot of wasted space.
09:37And the whole plot happened because characters were acting like idiots.
09:41Sonic had no excuse not to find the Emerald before Eggman could, because this is Sonic we're talking about.
09:46And Chris had no excuse to lose the Emerald to Eggman so easily.
09:50It would have made more sense if Eggman wasn't there when Chris found the Emerald, but instead he was, and
09:54Chris somehow did notice him.
09:55And got himself kidnapped.
09:58Eggman could have ambushed him with a robot instead and taken the Emerald that way.
10:02I also have to question where the American government would have the legal authority to replace a teacher with an
10:06agent to spy on a kid when there's no proof that the agent has a teaching degree.
10:11But this is Sonic X, not the real world, so maybe laws are just different over there.
10:16So far I'm not sure what to think about how Mr. Stewart's being portrayed, by the way.
10:20He's just a nice guy, not doing anything wrong, not even insulting Chris.
10:23I thought it was amusing how he's portrayed as ridiculously, unbelievably sinister in Sonic X for that reason.
10:29So far, let's see if we had an action came back.
10:30So let's go.
10:30Let's go.
