00:00Sonic X Episode 78
00:04After pointless recap reminding him of the last episode,
00:08it shows Lucas, the villain of that story, realizing he was wrong to act the way he used to,
00:13and Earthaya immediately forgives him for all of the destruction he caused
00:18because she's just that nice, which is very lucky for him.
00:22But nobody wanted to see the monstrously evil villain of the third season get forgiven
00:28just because he suddenly became good out of nowhere, uncharacteristically, somehow.
00:36And Cosmo takes her sweet time reassuring her friends that they've been good friends
00:41and the seeds of her species are going to spread through the galaxy to find places to grow.
00:48They could have done this better by showing a flash forward to the future at the end of the episode
00:53where we would see adult Cedrians walking around in other places.
01:01Eggman says they've got to get out of here because they might end up dying
01:05because of the Planet Egg's letting out all of its energy.
01:09Sonic tries to use Chaos Control to save them,
01:12and Shadow knocks him away and says he's doing it instead
01:16because he doesn't want it to hurt himself.
01:19And he still sounds like he's making fun of him,
01:22which can't be justified by him wanting to feel less awkward about being soft.
01:28At first it looks like nothing happens but them disappearing.
01:32Them disappearing would mean they also teleported away.
01:36And the writer wastes our time trying to make us think Shadow's gone forever.
01:41And it's explained that time got frozen.
01:44The music does most of the heavy lifting of trying to make it sad
01:48when Tails is crying because Cosmo's gone.
01:51So it's really just some music that makes me feel bad for him.
01:54Since Tails' voice is so bad that it's harder to take it seriously.
02:00Like I said before, Sonic's a horrible friend for not hugging him or anything here.
02:06Even Game Sonic would at least do something.
02:10He looks like there's something wrong with his brain for this.
02:14There's a lot of padding in this episode.
02:17Like Chris narrating that the hero stopped to take a vacation
02:20instead of him rushing home as fast as possible
02:23even though his family and friends would have been worried about him the whole time.
02:27Because as usual, he's selfish.
02:30You know, that reflects poorly on people other than Chris too
02:34because they also should have realized that his family is worried about him.
02:39Knuckles says the Master Emerald should be restored once its power is.
02:44He says a goofy, on-the-nose chant telling it to be restored now
02:49and it doesn't.
02:51He says that because it helped save the galaxy, it needs time to heal.
02:57While in SA1, all he had to do was put all of the Emerald Shards back together
03:03and it immediately was put back to normal.
03:07Why make the Emeralds more pathetic than the rest of the franchise?
03:12To be fair, it's not a plot hole because the show just explained that it takes time to heal
03:17because it did something it never got a chance to do in the games.
03:20So we don't know for sure if it's a downgrade.
03:25Chris says he can make a house for himself
03:27and the story keeps wasting my time with Knuckles encouraging him that it's easy to do.
03:33He gets the idea out of nowhere that Chris wants to build a home here.
03:38And even though he sounds upset, he suddenly turns out to be fine with the idea.
03:43Which is nicer than him being an anti-social grump
03:46wanting nobody to be on his island, even his own friends, like 90W.
03:51And Chris is his friend.
03:54Then the story wastes time reminding us of the obvious that Rouge misses Shadow,
03:59even though he's a jerk.
04:01And Eggman makes fun of her by pointing that out.
04:04And somehow Rouge figures out magically that Eggman knows where Shadow is,
04:10but doesn't beat him up so she can try to find him here.
04:14The only way Eggman would know where Shadow is would be if he found him.
04:18I guess she's assuming that he isn't hurt.
04:22The only way that he would be here.
04:25So she's assuming that he doesn't reunite with them because he's a jerk.
04:31Cosmo sends a reassuring message to Sonic to tell Tails to look at any trees or sky,
04:36even though the sky isn't plants, because that's where she is.
04:42Why didn't she send it to Tails instead?
04:45Grass is everywhere, so he could have been on some grass to get talked to.
04:50It's easy to assume Tails was inside, so she couldn't have talked to him because he was inside literally the
04:57whole time.
04:58My point is, it still would have felt a lot better if she had talked to Tails.
05:04And eventually, Chris gets a note saying it's a one-way ticket home because that's Eggman's sense of humor.
05:10He shows him a ship that'll instantly send him home, and he wants to be able to go back using
05:15it.
05:16It isn't explained, but it's easy to assume he wants to get rid of him so he wouldn't be a
05:20threat to him anymore.
05:22The whole time, I'm just thinking that if Eggman was in character, he'd have the spaceship explode with him in
05:28it.
05:29And since Chris is a genius who's talking about building a house here, he wouldn't risk going in there.
05:36But then they'd all force him in there and close the door anyways.
05:40So, it should have been written that he thought that.
05:44I can only try to explain this mercy from him as he respects him for being another gadgeteer genius.
05:52And maybe he projects enough of himself onto Chris that he thinks he's going to turn out just like him.
06:01I mean, he did notice Chris's selfishness in an earlier episode, after all.
06:06I shamed him for it.
06:07So, he respects him for being a genius, but that doesn't stop him from trying to kill Tails in Sonic
06:12Adventure and so on.
06:15He reveals the arbitrary rule that he can only return home if he leaves within three minutes.
06:21And Chris was lucky he even got to come here because of his timing.
06:25Again, it's always a bad idea to introduce luck to his story because it just makes it less believable that
06:33things turned out the way they did for nothing.
06:37And somehow Eggman's not complaining about his own assistants cheerfully saying goodbye and crying because they just got to be
06:43friends even though he'd know he'd want to fight against Eggman if he started causing trouble again.
06:49Chris gets to see Sonic one more time because creator's pet.
06:53Sonic just happened to be running nearby instead of having to run any other direction.
06:59And the story wastes time until the end.
07:01Instead of showing Eggman looking forward to doing evil again, it should have shown him immediately causing trouble again.
07:08And even then, it makes no sense that he'd go back to being evil if he's nice enough to send
07:13Chris home instead of kill him just because it's the right thing to do.
07:17To be fair, he could think that him taking over the world would be the right thing to do because
07:23he would run it well, but it portrays him as being sadistic.
07:28It's clear what the narrative thinks of Eggman.
07:31This episode by Kyoko Yoshimura is mostly a waste of time where the heroes are down about not having Shadow
07:39and Cosmo around anymore,
07:40with Sonic somehow being as useless for emotional support as Eggman would.
07:45And Chris gets sent home by Eggman, even though if he was in character, he'd just kill him.
07:50And if you want to make him nicer, you've got to commit to it by making him stop doing evil
07:55stuff that he'd never do if he'd do this for him.
07:59That would make a way for other villains to have time to shine and be interesting because it's so rare.
08:04Instead, he apparently still wants to fight people.
08:08It's another continuity, so it makes sense for it to not be exactly like the Source Materials universe.
08:14This just doesn't make sense even in this one.
08:16It should have had Chris make the thing that sent him home instead.
08:20Or had the robots throw Chris into the spaceship.
08:24So he's not an idiot for going in.
08:27It should have explained that Eggman thinks Chris is going to turn out like him because of the selfishness in
08:34him.
08:35And it should have had him start remembering his loved ones back home and missing them.
08:39Which would make it feel even more justified that he went home.
08:42And hint to the audience that Eggman's wrong that he's going to turn out as selfish as him.
08:48It's safe to assume that's why he came home, but it wouldn't be so confusing if we saw him remember
08:53them instead of spending the whole episode not thinking about them.
08:57And even happily planning to make a house there.
09:01Bottom line is, this was kind of boring and slow-paced filler with no action.
09:05With nothing that makes the Sonic series good besides what the characters look like.
09:10And they mostly only look like the characters anyways instead of having moments where they act in ways we really
09:15associate with them.
09:17I took so long to review this because the episode wasn't on the playlist of Sonic X episodes to review.
09:22So I assumed nobody outside of Japan got to see it because there was no excuse for it not being
09:28a part of the playlist.
09:29And so I didn't think to check anywhere else.
09:32Apparently it was on YouTube after all.
09:35And the only point of me talking about it was for completionism's sake because I already pointed out all of
09:39the problems with it in the last episode's review.
09:42I had other things to complain about, but looking back on it, I feel like I was able to explain
09:48away those plot holes.
09:49I didn't think to reveal who wrote most of the episodes of the show when I was reviewing it.
09:57Most of the show was written by the same few people.
10:00The writer of this episode, Masahiko Shireishi, and Hiro Masaki, and Chinatsu Hojo, and Yoshio Orasawa.
10:16Those were the last season.
10:19Yeah, mostly just those, but they all write the same way anyways.
