00:00Rick and Morty 2023 issue 12. The story starts with Morty narrating in a way that states the
00:08obvious and us getting to see a whole bunch of panels with time skips between them where we see
00:12that Noelle became a student in Morty's school and convinced the normal golden fold to take
00:18custody of her off screen and Morty decided to go to film school. So are we gonna find out that
00:26she has any kind of trouble in life because she doesn't have a real social security number
00:31because she's actually supposed to be in this universe? I guess not because it's a happy
00:37montage. So I guess there's a real Noelle in this universe and she just gets mistaken for her
00:44whole life. And there's one panel where he has to save her from an alien. So it's too bad that
00:50wasn't explained because that would have been an interesting story. Eventually we get to see
00:56them get married and Beth holding their baby while Jerry's nice enough to bring them cookies.
01:01I really hate that he's still looking like this. I really didn't expect that. I thought
01:07if Beth was in character she would have nagged Rick into turning him back to normal by now.
01:13There's an episode in season 9 that proves that they could have just transferred his soul into
01:20another body. Because that's what Morty and Rick must have had to do. We see someone near him die but
01:26after some padding we see that Noelle's still alive and listening to him complaining about getting
01:30fired. I like that Morty got a job making technology. I like that he tried to take after his grandpa
01:39showing that he's smarter than you think. And it was sort of a positive influence on him too.
01:44She tries to reassure him and says she'll destroy a factory while she's still got some of her uncle's
01:50technology with her. So that looks cool. Though it'd be out of character if she didn't plan to get
01:55everyone out of the factory first. But that's fair to assume. As for her wanting to do this in a
02:01pathetic attempt to destroy capitalism all on her own that doesn't change anything because it doesn't
02:06change a bunch of people's minds. That's believable because some people change a lot in 80 years.
02:13Since Morty's still naive he says some of the people he worked for are nice like that matters.
02:19And when she makes a good point he says that his grandpa was still really able to do stuff at
02:2485.
02:25Even though he was a cyborg full of nanobots and that's why he's athletic.
02:30He reminisces about one of the crazy things that happened because of Rick for a while and it turns out
02:35he
02:35mentions this all the time so she's smart enough to figure out that he misses adventures and invites
02:40them to watch her destroy a factory. She has Morty look at the great planet through a telescope
02:46that they had to pay for and he sees that it's all math and must be a magical telescope for
02:53how good
02:54it is at showing them stuff. Why would her uncle be on oxygen if he was able to invent a
02:59portal gun?
03:01I know he prefers math but it's just stupid to only invent a few things because of that. So he
03:07didn't
03:07think the cyborg guy's robotized himself even though Rick did? He looks bored. Won't they have stolen Rick's
03:14cloning technology by now? And there's no way that in the future you would only have to pay such a
03:21tiny
03:22amount of money to activate the telescope. Morty hopes Rick's still alive and after a bunch of
03:28boring dialogue which at some point has Noel want to selfishly stick Morty with babysitting someone
03:33awful to him. To be fair she'd be a Mary Sue if she was never a selfish bitch at any
03:39point and at least
03:40this is rare but I'm so caught off guard that she'd put him through this. I just have to assume
03:46she
03:47justifies it as she had a hard childhood so she gets to be selfish sometimes. It turns out his
03:53granddaughter Itchy is actually really smart. She even plans on experimenting on a rat to see if it
03:59can die of the embarrassment that she deals with every day and we never get to find out why she
04:04would
04:04ever be embarrassed and why she thinks she can't just google this to find out. And it distinguishes
04:10her from Rick that she does deal with embarrassment every day while Rick's actually cool and was popular
04:16when he went to high school. Who would name their kid Itchy? So I guess we're supposed to assume that
04:22one of their kids is a terrible parent. Morty points out that he thinks she shouldn't be embarrassed all
04:29the time and takes until now to figure out that she's doing lethal experiments on animals. She somehow
04:35figures out from her sending a snake after a rat for no reason that she should never ask anyone out
04:40or
04:40leave the house. And she's also weird enough to call her mom mother. So she's mentally ill. Why doesn't
04:48she just look up this stuff instead of experimenting? Why doesn't she go to Wikipedia? She isn't impressed
04:57with him going on Rick's adventures that she isn't even sure she believes in because she thinks he was
05:02dead weight on them even though she would have been told how he contributed on them. There would definitely
05:08be a bunch of evidence of Rick being around. Like Rick still would have had a bunch of stuff in
05:15his
05:16garage. He could have shown it to her. Weren't there be some photographic evidence of him being with Rick?
05:23I guess his lab had like a self-destruct feature after he's gone from it for long enough. After way
05:32too
05:33much boring dialogue something crashes in front of Morty and at least it is nice enough to warn him
05:38not to touch a hot UFO. Maybe he should know better. Predictably I finally get to see Rick again who
05:46talks
05:46too much boringly and somehow reveals that he believes in prophecies now when he didn't want to
05:52believe in magic. And it turns out Rick's a lot more of a cyborg now and doesn't look any older.
05:58Even though he
05:59lived to like 85 still wanting to have a lot of organicness in his body. So why would he change
06:08his mind? Old people don't tend to change their minds. He also has a creative looking design. It's
06:15sweet to see him say he missed Rick who hugs him from behind. It's even better that Rick admits you
06:21it's a dick to him. Then he takes too long blathering again and somehow doesn't guess anywhere close to
06:28what year it is. Itchy asks how he didn't burn up in the atmosphere before getting here. Obviously
06:34he doesn't have real skin. He's just a robot who looks organic. Why does Rick look annoyed when he
06:42likes her? It's kind of sweet that he does but I hope she gets less annoying. After some more
06:48unnecessary dialogue we finally get told what the space shake is made of and like when he first mentioned
06:54it in this issue. I'm glad he found out that the real space shake was on earth and he's gonna
06:59actually
06:59earn getting it. He says all of the enemies he ever had are behind that door even though he should
07:06assume most of them are dead and Rick Prime is. He uses a robot arm to punch his way in
07:12and they see
07:13Jerry looking normal and on the same side as Rick's enemies. It's not explained that it's the evil Jerry
07:21from the previous comic book and it's not explained why it would have gone back to normal. That's pretty
07:28unacceptable. It turns out Rick was only lured here by a space shake and there's some more boring
07:34dialogue and the art tries as hard as it can to ruin the fight scene every step of the way
07:40by showing
07:40the main characters almost in monochrome and only showing someone get hit in actually cathartic way once.
07:48What's the point? It was cool that Ichi let some rats out in as Wolverine claws. There's just only so
07:56cool she can be when she's named after Ichi from Ichi and Scratchy. Before we know it they're drinking
08:04the shake. That was anticlimactic. There wasn't any real point in pretending that all of Rick's enemies
08:11came here at once. It's just empty fan service that thinks you have worse standards than you do.
08:17If someone wanted to see a character again he'd want to see him talk. Then Rick gets told long-windedly
08:24that Morty got trapped in a time crystal and Rick doesn't follow him into the portal he goes into
08:30for no reason at all. Instead they both stay still. He says he doesn't have a body to fight anymore
08:36even
08:37though he fought earlier. But then it's competent enough to form a body. So he was too arrogant to
08:42think he needed to do that until now. Then Rick goes on a long boring monologue breaking the fourth
08:48wall like he does in the show unfortunately. And it's the worst it ever is here. We get it. The
08:54comic's ending. We knew that. There's still more Rick and Morty comics outside of the specific comic book
08:59series so this means nothing. At one point he says these enemies of his were from the comic series
09:05before now but that doesn't make any sense because the comic book before this one ended with the
09:10universe being destroyed with Rick and Morty in it. So he should have explained he prevented that
09:15because without that I'm just too confused to appreciate the cameos. Rick and Morty died at the
09:23same time in that episode of the show and that's why they got sent to the afterlife together. So that
09:31would have happened to him. Morty got saved by itchy diving into the most annoying enemy Rick ever
09:37had causing him to drop him. And that's it. So that was anticlimactic as it immediately cuts
09:45down being saved by a blacksmith. I thought the point of Morty being put in a time crystal was that
09:51it was going to be a reset button to bring Morty back to the same age. I know it doesn't
09:56make much
09:57sense but I guess I thought it would make meta sense. Instead he's still an old man and got replaced
10:03by itchy because I guess he doesn't think he can be a good assistant on adventures anymore. I mean he
10:09could always just send his soul into a young clone of his. The show makes it pretty clear that Rick
10:16actually prefers Morty's company even though he respects Summer more. So the same would apply to
10:25itchy. He respects her but he wouldn't be as emotionally attached to her because she wouldn't
10:30have the same caring easily forgiving personality as him. It cuts 80 years later where it turns out
10:38itchy's taking her granddaughter on an adventure with her to the Megaseed planet the first episode
10:44and explains that the Megaseed trees here are the result of people keeping the Megaseeds in use too long.
10:50Maybe this might have been explained in the show. I've only seen the first episode of the show twice.
10:56The story ends there with the cycle continuing anew. Well aside from there being some boring dialogue
11:02sometimes and anti-climaxes, the stuff that kept happening in the story was nice enough to give me
11:07a positive impression of it. I'm surprised that not only did Noel get to date Morty for a while but
11:13actually grew old with him. And I also thought it was cool that he had a granddaughter like Rick.
11:19But she was wasted potential because she had none of the redeeming personality traits of him and the
11:24only thing that set her apart was confusing and annoying. I'm also surprised the story didn't end
11:31by pushing the reset button and instead it had a happy ending to the point where Morty liked getting
11:36to reunite with Rick. Since I doubt the show is going to have an ending like this, if it doesn't
11:41then this
11:42will serve as showing us what the ending to the franchise would actually look like. Though I don't
11:46think Noel would be a part of the canon ending because the comics contradict the source material.
11:51It showed Diane being alive in a universe outside of the central finite curve when we're supposed to
11:59believe that Diane was gotten rid of in all of the universes somehow. But the show Morty could have
12:09gotten together with someone else or a founder with a portal gun. Still, there was no excuse for not
12:15having the fight scene with Rick's enemies last longer and have more than one instance of an
12:20actually cathartic impact with one of them because they could have cut down on padding to make room for
12:25it. And the overuse of time skiffs made things feel rushed towards the end. It didn't give it the impact

12:32to make me think of both of those ones I was looking for.
12:33And I didn't give Finky Riverside expert on time side if you thought it'd be different...
