00:00Issue 86
00:02It starts with Sonic and Belle chasing Metal Sonic for kidnapping Sage, with Belle riding Motobud,
00:08who so far is about as endearing as the character's horse would be to me since that's all he does
00:14most of the time.
00:15But if he talked, the issues would take longer to go through.
00:19For no reason, Belle wastes her time reminding Sonic that he needs to rescue Sage.
00:24And then Sonic joins in on stating the obvious that anyone who didn't already know about would have found out
00:31later.
00:32Even though he glared at Tails for doing that in Sonic Adventure.
00:38At least in Sonic the Comic, it made a point of having Sonic not be the one doing this because
00:43he's supposed to be cool,
00:45so the other characters did that to make him look cooler.
00:49Here the Raider treats the audience like idiots and it doesn't benefit the story.
00:53They run into a place with a bunch of different paths and a gas trails from the room that isn't
00:59mentioned
00:59and they stopped being able to follow a robot that Sonic was close to two panels ago.
01:05And somehow a panel later he was so far away he was out of sight.
01:09And we never saw him use a fire boost to get ahead and there's no reason Sonic would have slowed
01:14down.
01:14I just have to assume it's magic.
01:18That the gas just magically made this possible.
01:22At that point you should have just had Sonic trip.
01:25Because occasionally people do trip when they run.
01:30Sonic explains that it's too echoey to tell which path to take.
01:34So good thing that got explained.
01:37Somehow I forgot Belle couldn't use her link with Metal Sonic.
01:41So Belle has to waste my time reiterating what we already know.
01:46Even if the writer was doing this for the sake of the extremely tiny amount of people who would have
01:50had this as his first issue,
01:52they wouldn't have been confused without knowing she could link with him.
01:57Recap for like two new readers should never be at the expense of the majority.
02:02They'll figure out what's going on.
02:05Why doesn't this former Archie writer do what Archie Sonic used to do?
02:10By putting most of the recapping into text boxes instead of breaking immersion.
02:15With the dialogue we've got these characters are just annoying.
02:19Belle says out of nowhere that her not being able to use a link with Metal Sonic is for the
02:24best
02:24because Sage was made by Eggman and so she'd be a bigger problem later if she got saved.
02:30True.
02:31It's smart of her to figure out.
02:33And people do look on the bright side sometimes to cope with things.
02:37But it feels forced to have her say this after she felt sorry for her.
02:42She's too empathetic for this to make sense.
02:46Of course, because this is IDW Sonic,
02:49he's naive enough to assume Sage won't become a bigger problem later on,
02:53even though he knows she's Eggman's heiress and looks up to him.
02:57Because he's a parody of the game Sonic.
03:01So, I have to assume that he trusts her because she's a little girl in appearance.
03:07The same was true for Sonic in Sonic Frontiers.
03:11But it still feels like a flanderization because we never saw him be this naive about her in the games.
03:18that he's just certain she'll become a good guy later.
03:22Sonic points out that he needed Metal Sonic's help to save the world, not get roboticized,
03:28and Sage got Eggman to care about someone.
03:31I'd think in a situation like this, he'd point out that Sage saved the world.
03:35Instead, he makes a much weaker point.
03:37A monster caring about one person is usually only going to benefit that one person,
03:44except when it leads them paying businesses for some gifts for him.
03:48Having one exception doesn't mean the rule is going to change.
03:54Because he obviously only likes her because she looks like a little girl, and he made her.
04:00To be fair, he's making an excellent point in his defense.
04:03If only that was all he ever said to defend giving his enemies second chances too much.
04:09When he needed Metal Sonic, he needed him so fast that if he had just been thrown into the ocean
04:14right away
04:14after he had been beaten in a fight, it would have taken too long to retrieve him.
04:19And while he only needed him because he fixed him, he didn't know that.
04:26But if he had imprisoned Sage in Sonic Frontiers, well he's got super speed,
04:31so it would only take a couple of seconds to retrieve her to get her help,
04:34unless the nearest jail was too far away.
04:36Or they were on Angel Island.
04:39So his logic is that he never noticed when a situation might happen
04:43where he needs one of his enemies' help right now,
04:45and it'd take too long for him to get him out of jail for it.
04:49And his former enemies have helped him so much.
04:53But he still let people do his citizens' rest of Ruff and Tumble.
04:57To be fair, it's not like either of them showed any powers that would be necessary in a life-threatening
05:02situation.
05:03He could just tell Tails to invent a stink bomb gadget and always keep it in his shoe,
05:08so he'd never need Ruff's help.
05:10Thankfully he reassures her right away.
05:12And somehow Belle needs to take a pause like she's confused about being told Sage is her sister.
05:19He says fixing Metal Sonic isn't the craziest idea out there,
05:23and it's cathartic that he's clearing his throat and looking away like he's embarrassed.
05:27But he's also confused, since in his mind he was proven right about having Tails fix him,
05:33since he just said he needed his help afterwards.
05:36So why doesn't he just explain that?
05:39Still, it was so unlikely that he would've needed it,
05:42that it was still crazy because he didn't tell Tails to reprogram him to be good, too.
05:47So it's frustrating that he still hasn't figured that out,
05:51even after happily watching Tails reprogram some badniks.
05:55So if the badniks looked like him, only then would he object because it's brainwashing.
06:00Because of the words he said, Belle says maybe she can link with Sage.
06:06She wouldn't say maybe.
06:08Because she already found out she could.
06:10She would've done this earlier.
06:13Somehow Sage only thought there was a small chance of her thinking to do something that she already did in
06:18front of her,
06:19even though there was no reason to think Belle was stupid.
06:23Belle gets taken over, and Sage wants her to guide Sonic to Sage's location.
06:27Even though Sonic trusts Sage not to replace Eggman or something,
06:32he still says this better be temporary.
06:35After some pointless dialogue,
06:38eventually Belle says she knows the way and tells the motorbud to go faster.
06:43There aren't any steers on the motorbud, so how does she steer it?
06:48They end up seeing a creative-looking monster.
06:52Eventually, Sonic spin-datches Metal Sonic,
06:55and Belle runs up to the buttons of a control panel she never saw before and says turn off and
07:01starts typing.
07:02I think she'd just have to press the Windows key and then use the mouse to click on the shutoff
07:07option.
07:08Why would it be on a screen that'd let her change its code to turn it off?
07:14Eventually, Sonic stupidly warns a robot who can react at the speed of sound that he should be watching out
07:20for motorbud,
07:20but thankfully it cuts Metal Sonic's foot just in time.
07:24Sonic attacks Metal Sonic and Sage tells him to reboot,
07:28and somehow now he's got the free will to take the control device off him.
07:33It could have easily been written that Sonic's spin-dash damaged the control device.
07:39After padding, Sage tells Metal Sonic to find the one who kidnapped her.
07:43I like that she interrupted Sonic when he was stupidly blaming him for always being a jerk when he knows
07:49he doesn't have free will.
07:52Then he taunts him too.
07:54It's annoying because he's only evil because he was programmed to be and he doesn't have free will,
07:59and in this story he hasn't done anything wrong by choice.
08:05So I don't find cruelty against him to be deserved.
08:09Belle asks Sage how she's feeling, and she says she has some corruption.
08:14I think she meant emotionally feeling, because she clearly didn't get hurt.
08:19So how did she get corrupted and misinterpreted?
08:22And way too many panels get weighted on the heroes planning to leave and taking off.
08:28The villain has the superhuman power to run while holding a heavy object strapped to his back.
08:34Couldn't he teleport Sonic to another room or teleport himself earlier?
08:39Why is he just running away now?
08:42Well, maybe he didn't have the ability to teleport.
08:47The story had me assume he could do anything because of all the other stuff he could do.
08:52Didn't Sonic get teleported to another room earlier because he opened up the coffin?
08:58So it's no wonder I thought he could teleport because he could just apply that teleportation magic or gadget to
09:05himself.
09:07I should have to just assume he ran out of magic.
09:10Because it's hardly ever the case in Sonic that any magical abilities have a limited amount of energy aside from
09:15Silver's hover.
09:16He went from really intimidating to looking like a wimp by running away.
09:22For no reason he stops in front of Sonic instead of putting his fist up to ram into him.
09:27It looks impressive to see him swing a coffin above him.
09:30I never saw that being used as a weapon before.
09:34He smacks it into the ground releasing fog and eventually Sage says it's impairing their senses.
09:40Sonic and Metal Sonic see a giant in front of them and they effortlessly spin dash it a bunch of
09:45times without having to get hurt once.
09:48Which makes sense since they're so fast.
09:51So I would have been confused if they did get attacked.
09:55And we knew they had plot armor anyways.
09:58It's just that with the monster meant to be as scary looking as this.
10:02The first people he was faced with should have been Belle on her own.
10:05Because she isn't as overpowered in a fight.
10:08And her lack of plot armor compared to gang characters.
10:11Would cause attention to actually hold.
10:14Plus this isn't that interesting because it just reminds me of Chaos.
10:20Sonic says enough smoke and mirrors.
10:23And I look forward to actually learning about the villains soon.
10:26So apparently he assumes that this is someone he already knows.
10:30Who is trying to hide his identity from him.
10:33Instead of assuming that this villain was smart enough to hide his identity so he wouldn't get discovered and get
10:41in trouble.
10:42He just thinks this because most of the villains he encountered were stupid enough to think that they would succeed.
10:48And so it's fine to show their faces all the time.
10:51But this guy's clearly been intelligent.
10:54He could have easily just thought that this was how he looked.
10:58If he did think this was someone he already knew.
11:01There's only two people he would assume it is.
11:04One of which he doesn't think is alive.
11:06And the other of which is never seen without Surge Round.
11:11You'd think he would think this is Kitsunami because of the whole controlling a bunch of water thing.
11:17But you could also think that Starline because he's the one who invented the water pack in the first place.
11:24And since when does Kitsunami do any engineering?
11:27But he was completely certain he would never see Starline again.
11:31So he would just say it's Kitsunami.
11:34Eventually the monster disappears.
11:36And they all end up on the snow outside.
11:39If it could disappear, why didn't it disappear a lot earlier instead of him running away?
11:45All Sonic had to do was spin dash it a bunch.
11:47It didn't even do anything so there was nothing to look at that was interesting in the whole fight besides
11:51the way he looked.
11:53Sonic wonders what he was saying.
11:56And Belle's thankful to be here and he says they've won.
12:00So he only got his memory erased of what he was just saying.
12:04It's like he was brainwashed into forgetting what just happened.
12:08Which would make sense if the hypno glove was used on him.
12:12But that was thrown in the incinerator.
12:14Why didn't he erase their memories of the entire experience they had with him at that point?
12:19Idiot.
12:20I guess he thought if he brainwashed him into wanting to help him later too.
12:25People would figure out it with him.
12:29Or someone associated with him.
12:31Somehow Belle says she left Emeraldsville to get away from this sort of thing.
12:36Huh?
12:37What does she mean?
12:39It doesn't help that all of the villagers have only one thing to distinguish themselves at best.
12:44And the ones that don't all blend together.
12:46So all I remember Emeraldsville for is that Lanlin said it sucked without explaining why.
12:51So now I just have to assume what she means is it's getting attacked by badniks weirdly often.
12:58Also, if Sonic can be brainwashed and have his memory of something erased.
13:03I sure hope it's revealed that it happened to Sage too.
13:07And it's taken advantage of.
13:09So that's what the corruption was.
13:11Because otherwise.
13:13It would make no sense to have her in the tube.
13:15And not use anything on her.
13:17It would make no sense to have her in the tube.
13:19And not brainwashed her.
13:21Sage pointlessly states the obvious for a while along with Sonic.
13:25Eventually she says Belle has Trojan remote access programming in her.
13:29So she deletes it for Eggman's sake.
13:32The comic gives me such a low opinion of the intelligence of the characters.
13:35That I didn't expect for her to have the common sense to do this.
13:39Good.
13:39It's also that I never got told she could delete stuff in robots.
13:43Just control them like the Iron Queen.
13:46Belle says she could leave the system link between them.
13:49So she could chat with her.
13:51Because they consider each other family.
13:53It was sweet to see how she smiled at this.
13:56After some padding dialogue.
13:58Sonic reassures her with some info that she has to already know.
14:01That his friends could fix the wagon.
14:04Why is she calling a caravan a wagon?
14:06Tails shows up in the plane.
14:08And Amy happens to show up with them.
14:11There's some more pointless dialogue in panels.
14:14Where all that matters is we see Amy pulling a rope to get the caravan back up.
14:19While her friends are pushing it on the other side.
14:22The story wastes my time with a fake out.
14:24Because Eggman's shades have some threatening green and white light come out of them.
14:28When talking to Sage.
14:29And then he looks around and asks if she's sure she's fine.
14:32And she thanks him.
14:33While Orbit and Q-Bot hear him.
14:35Because they're hiding behind something.
14:37I like that he said that.
14:38But I'll never think it's in character.
14:41The appeal is that it's not like him.
14:43And this is a pleasant surprise.
14:45So the appeal is it's being creative.
14:48But it makes no sense.
14:51Why would someone who's been as evil as him find a little girl so cute that he would care about
14:59her?
15:00He was fine with trying to kill Tails.
15:03What was the point of making him look like he was plotting against her?
15:07Only a cynical minority of people would have thought he would have hurt her or something for no reason.
15:12Because the comic so far has been faithful to him being weirdly sentimental with her for someone who's been nothing
15:17but a monster the whole series.
15:20His saving Tails once doesn't mean anything.
15:23Because he could have done it because he wanted him alive to roboticize later.
15:26Since he had a roboticizer in that game.
15:29He also could have been planning to tell her to get ready to go after the heroes controlling a giant
15:33mecha while he does the same.
15:35Not even that happens.
15:37I guess the reason he asks her if she's sure she's okay instead of just examining her is that he's
15:43lazy and wants an excuse not to examine her.
15:46Idiot.
15:46This panel should have been the last one on the issue and been followed up with by him telling her
15:51to go after Sonic.
15:53Instead he did a subversion that reminded us of how evil he was when he released the metal virus just
15:57to drag him back to the lingering effects of Sonic Boom's depiction of Eggman on the games.
16:04First off, only a minority of fans watched Sonic Boom so that's a stupid sample size to base messing with
16:10someone else's character on.
16:11And Eggman being a softy was forgivable in Sonic Boom because it was another universe.
16:17So there was less history of his we were already aware of to look at and see nothing but of
16:22being over the top evil.
16:25His getting attached to Sage only feels like it makes sense if you let yourself forget that having a kid
16:30doesn't guarantee someone's gonna care about him.
16:33In this issue by Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley, the heroes eventually find Sage and the villain so easily thanks
16:40to Sage that it was a pointless waste of time to have them not know where to go and start
16:44flabbering when she would have contacted her right away.
16:47And the villain just reminds me of Chaos and Kitsunami but does nothing.
16:52And Sonic and Metal have a boring fight with him while he fails to get even a single hit in
16:57even though he made a fake Sonic as fast as them.
17:00He warped them away.
17:02How convenient that he was too stupid to think to telephrag them with the rocks while he was at it.
17:08Since he warped them out of here.
17:11This was oddly merciful for a bad guy.
17:13If a boss fight did this we'd think that it meant he had good intentions and wasn't so bad after
17:19all.
17:19But the comic makes every character stupid so why should I assume it's not that?
17:24You'd think instead of making Sonic forget he saw who he was he would make him want to kill everybody
17:31around him.
17:32I came out of this especially disappointed because it ends without us finding out anything about the bad guy but
17:38how he looks and the things he has in common with Starline and Kitsunami.
17:44This story was mostly just boring dialogue where the characters looked lame for stating the obvious and then went to
17:50a boss arena.
17:51The fact that the beginning section would have logically been a lot shorter is especially frustrating because it could have
17:57been cut out to make a room for us getting told more about the bad guy.
18:01But instead it left his motives and identity a mystery to force the people only following this comic to see
18:07if its plot threads get resolved to keep reading to find out.
18:10We don't even find out his name. I think the writer is trying to leave obvious clues to find out
18:17if the fanbase wants Starline back.
18:19Which he would judge by the reaction to those obvious clues.
18:24It's just cowardly. Usually doesn't care what the fans and critics think and just writes whatever.
18:30It would make a lot more sense if Starline survived because he'd have to be suicidal not to inject himself
18:36with the same cybernetic metal virus that Surge had to survive anything.
18:42And it would make sense that he would give himself Kitsunami's powers while he was at it.
18:46But it's just capit
18:47And it'd be impossible!
18:48I've learned to have brent.
18:48But he would have to wait to find out why he is trying to register.
18:48And it's gonna be able to enter the list as the desires of KitsundCoastcom Airways into the system.
18:48Motions once a bullet, it's valuable?
