00:02It starts by explaining that the heroes are in an old industrial district.
00:08That's more effort on the writer's part than just leaving it as saying it's an abandoned building.
00:14Sonic takes the emerald and out of complete nowhere he guesses for no reason that this isn't the same person
00:20as the thief he dealt with earlier.
00:23Just because he's acting differently doesn't prove that.
00:27At first I assumed it was obvious, but in case anyone's wondering why I'm saying Soleil, it's pronounced Cirque du
00:34Soleil.
00:35It's stupid that Sonic thinks he has to introduce himself to Soleil.
00:39It's consistent with him having to introduce himself to Tangle, but this was stupid in Sonic Unleashed, too.
00:47After the average person got shown the Ark being prevented from crashing into the world,
00:51and then the president liked Sonic enough to get a photo of him and Shadow on his desk,
00:55most people would know who Sonic is on site.
00:58So no wonder Soleil already knows who Sonic is.
01:01That just makes it even more confusing that Tangle needed to be told she was looking at Sonic,
01:06and so that has to be why Sonic assumed he didn't know him.
01:12This guy's whole life was changed by him, and he's a part of a Sonic spotter community.
01:18So the story's trying to make it feel like more of a believable world.
01:23The story keeps trying to make you feel sorry for him by portraying him as embarrassed and socially awkward.
01:29Anyways, if the plot could actually start progressing and things could start actually happening, that'd be great.
01:35We already have Belle for a socially awkward character, and they've just shoved her into a corner to be unimportant
01:41forever.
01:42He's told to explain why he looks up to Sonic, even though that's self-explanatory,
01:47but for some reason he feels the need to give him his backstory.
01:51He's from a family of traveling acrobats, but he failed one time, so his parents lost respect for him,
01:57and he started watching videos of Sonic, who also does air tricks.
02:02At least the writer cared enough to establish this about a character instead of being lazy.
02:07But the fact that he's got a backstory is just another kick in the teeth,
02:11because you won't establish a real backstory for Surgeon Kit, who are much more popular,
02:16and the fact that he has a family that's still alive is proof that there's no excuse for Surgeon Kit
02:22not to have families.
02:23I started to think there was a mandate against literally anyone but Cream having family members who would be more
02:31important than just a background character for one issue,
02:35because somehow every new OC has never been established to have any surviving family members.
02:42Anyway, a while ago things started showing up under Soleil's bed that he didn't remember getting.
02:49He would have assumed that the mask is magically taking over his body to make him steal,
02:54because it's already a world with chaos emeralds, so he would have gotten rid of it.
03:00Somehow, instead of blaming the mask, his parents blamed the videos of Sonic, who was not a thief, known hero
03:07of the world,
03:08instead of thinking that he disassociates from a multiple personality disorder brought on by the trauma of public humiliation,
03:15because he's so much of a wimp, that that alone, along with his parents being overbearing, gave him PTSD to
03:23that degree.
03:24Somehow.
03:26It looks like his parents are the crazy ones for being impossibly stupid.
03:30I guess his parents have to be Eggman supporters, because they like really strong, inconsiderate authority,
03:37and they think of epathy as a sin for making people sympathize with the weak over the strong.
03:41So from their perspective, Sonic would be a bad person for being against him, and actual theft is also bad,
03:47so that's the only reason they'd think of Sonic as bad, and as a result of watching videos of him
03:51leading to something that's also bad.
03:54Soleil says where he's been to recently,
03:56and Tails says that he went to the same places where all of the emeralds disappeared.
04:02Tails assumes that he developed an alter ego from stress,
04:06even though the fact that he talked in a different way than normal with the mask on,
04:11and he complained about the mask last issue,
04:14makes it obvious that it could also be the mask's fault.
04:17Somehow, he doesn't mention the possibility that it could also be that the mask is magical.
04:24Sonic reassures him and says out of nowhere that he has a feeling this mystery has more shoes to drop
04:29on them,
04:30and yet he doesn't have a thought bubble proving that what he means is he doesn't trust his mask.
04:35So how does he think this?
04:37Why doesn't he just tell him to get rid of his mask?
04:40He says they'll figure it out together.
04:42But what is there to do?
04:44All he can do to stop any further thefts would be teach his parents to have him restrained at night,
04:49which they would have started after the first time,
04:52or just get rid of the mask.
04:55Also, since his parents knew about the thefts,
04:58why didn't they just take his emeralds to Sonic?
05:01I understand them not taking the other stolen stuff to the police station,
05:04because they wouldn't want to be accused of being the thief,
05:07or knowing the thief,
05:09because it doesn't sound like a likely story to say they just found them,
05:13and they wouldn't want to get their kid in trouble.
05:16It goes without saying there is a police station in the city,
05:19because Ruff and Tumble were arrested and put in prison in this comic,
05:23and it's a world with modern technology in it.
05:27The wall gets blown up because Shadow and Rouge caught up to them,
05:31or catching up to them.
05:34Wait, Shadow can teleport and is just as fast as Sonic,
05:38but he's taking a while to catch up with Sonic?
05:41Sonic didn't have that much of a head start.
05:44In fact, Shadow had the head start because he started walking away from the last place he was in
05:49first while Sonic was just standing there talking to Tails.
05:54Anyway, the story gets weird because some jesters that have black eyes instead of eyeballs
05:59who are his parents tell him to hand him the phone and tell him off for running away from the
06:04circus.
06:05Even though his parents themselves took him out of the circus act.
06:11So apparently this means Soleil lied about them taking him out of the circus act.
06:16Or this is completely stupid.
06:19Because they expected him to magically know that when they took him out of the circus act,
06:25he was supposed to go against them.
06:29Even though they're really strict.
06:31Their dialogue is so stilted.
06:34The black eyes is desperately trying to force them to still look creepy despite their silly gesture outfits.
06:41At least this is new.
06:44His phone gets damaged and Sonic runs past them to pick up the phone and tells him off.
06:51And these people are yet another example of organic beings who are somehow delusional enough to think they could take
06:57Sonic in a fight despite how fast he is.
07:00They don't explain right away that they have the kinds of magical abilities that would make them a match in
07:05a fight with him either.
07:06Like a force field. Or at least super speed.
07:10And while he would want to show some mercy to organic beings, it would put them through more suffering to
07:15make their fight last longer than a few seconds.
07:18So it would be relatively merciful to just end it instantly.
07:21So this isn't about compassion on his part for them.
07:25Or their kid.
07:26By that logic he wouldn't even hurt them at all.
07:29So stop making Sonic fight people.
07:32You don't have to write this.
07:33There should be a rule against this.
07:35Because the writers don't have the common sense not to do it.
07:38I really hate that the story is just forcing Sonic and Tails to just stand there letting these goofballs talk
07:44for five hours instead of running away carrying the kid.
07:47To be fair, I get them not wanting to hurt them in front of their kid.
07:51But that excuse doesn't work because Sonic could just instantly pick Soleil up, run away, and set him down and
07:57come back in a second to beat them up.
07:59Assuming he even considers it necessary to beat them up.
08:03Because it really wouldn't be at that point.
08:06Tails gets condescendingly called Child.
08:10I guess just for his association with Sonic.
08:13To be fair, how is anyone supposed to know Tails helped save the world in SE2 or Heroes?
08:18Assuming Sonic bragged about his own adventures to people, he would only talk about himself because it's about bragging about
08:24himself.
08:25Obviously he bragged in the games too, like all throughout Sonic Forces, so he would brag.
08:30And again, the only reason they wouldn't respect Tails for his association with Sonic alone would be that they already
08:38hated Sonic for fighting Eggman.
08:41There's a blue tux bubble meaning that he's magically having his voice altered.
08:45And Soleil reveals that he put on the mask again that turned him back into Lunar.
08:50I assume the stress made him unable to resist the magic of the mask tempting him to put it on.
08:56So why did he take so long to put on the mask?
08:59And then it turns out Shadow and Rouge are far away from Sonic and the city above, walking at the
09:04speed of molasses for no reason.
09:08And Shadow is asking what they're looking for here because for no reason she hadn't already told him.
09:14Why isn't Shadow running while carrying Rouge?
09:18He must have been running before to get here, so why did he stop running?
09:22He can't get tired from running when his whole superpower is being able to run really fast,
09:27which would burn through a lethal amount of calories right away without magical energy to run off of instead.
09:33When did he start panting after a level or after running after Sonic for a while?
09:38Every time I come back to this comic, I want to just go through the story, but I can't do
09:41that without being lazy
09:43because I keep getting my immersion ruined by writing that it's so blatantly forced,
09:47I wouldn't even have to try to think about it to realize how unnatural its plot progression is.
09:52Because the story already primed to me to feel like Shadow and Rouge are catching up to Sonic,
09:56and using every ability at their disposal.
09:58So it's immediately confusing that they're now contradicting that because if they did show up right away,
10:04the villains would have even less of an excuse for not getting an instant trouncing.
10:08It's not impossible for them to have magical abilities that means they could put up a good fight,
10:12but the writer should have immediately established that to not instantly provoke cynicism,
10:16because the norm is that organic beings aren't super fast and capable of producing force fields,
10:22and Rough and Topple and Mimic failed to be like that.
10:25If these jesters did that right away and kept themselves protected,
10:29the heroes wouldn't be able to do anything against them as they just ram into them with force fields kept
10:33around them.
10:34Anyways, Rouge has way too much to say here.
10:38It's funny that the writer thinks I'm gonna be interested in spending all this time reading all this
10:42after I was just in a dramatic precursor to a fight scene.
10:46Talk about destroying the pacing and mood whiplash in one go.
10:50Rouge is just here to get something to drink from a cafe and then join in a fight when the
10:54opportunity presents itself.
10:57Why would she ever want to wait?
10:59She's not a coward, and she's got Shadow with her.
11:03Surprisingly, Shadow decides to take off anyway.
11:06Because he's not gonna be out of character, but she is.
11:10Why would he waste time telling her off for so long when he thinks there could be a fight for
11:13the emeralds going on now?
11:15I'd rather just say this is ridiculous and run away right away.
11:20It'd save me the wasted time and be more in character for someone who's not talkative when he doesn't have
11:25to be.
11:26And Rouge calls them stubborn hypocritically.
11:29She was a hypocrite in essay 2 too, but since when did she shy away from fights and prefer to
11:33go to a restaurant than take a jewel from a thief?
11:37Just have Rouge get grabbed by a robot from behind if you want to keep her out of the story
11:41so bad.
11:42If the idea is that it'd be too easy for Sonic if they both get to back him up, why
11:48wouldn't it be Shadow's Cup out of the fight instead of the weaker one?
11:52Better yet, why doesn't she get distracted by another jewel she could steal?
11:57Then one of the jesters who's surprisingly keeping up with Sonic wastes the time calling the names of each jester
12:03he wants help from, even though he doesn't have to because who else would they be giving this order to?
12:08It never explained why Sonic's so fast, so these guys being just as fast is just as plausible and is
12:15necessary to explain why he wouldn't instantly knock them all out.
12:19It makes just as much sense as Amy being fast.
12:23Some other jesters somehow got ahead of Sonic despite him having a head start in the race and being ahead
12:29of them all in it.
12:31So they're all faster than Sonic.
12:34Well that's preferential treatment.
12:37But you could say the same thing about Shadow and it would be stupid to call him a bad character
12:42of thriving powers if Sonic doesn't.
12:44I kinda wish Sonic was rinsed outright confirmed that they're faster than him by remarking their speed all impressed so
12:51people wouldn't be as confused that normal seeming people rendering his speed useless as an advantage like it's nothing and
12:58feel like it's unintentionally implied and bad writing.
13:02Instead it's treated like it's nothing even though we've only seen hedgehogs in the games be this best.
13:09Tails tells Sonic to go while he fights them.
13:12Why are they attacking the heroes instead of letting Sonic compliment Tails?
13:17He calls Tails Bud and I get to see Tails reference the fact that he's been bullied before.
13:22Though it could just be a meta reference to it since he only says he's seen a lot of bullies.
13:28Which could also refer to people who didn't bully him.
13:31Sonic runs past them to recklessly leave Tails to take on people who are outnumbering him.
13:37He could always fly away.
13:39Why does Sonic call to lay they when talking to his parents after he's heard his voice and seen what
13:45he really looked like and wasn't told to talk like this by him?
13:49There's no way he would assume he has to talk like this.
13:53It's a weird thing to assume.
13:56Well there's plenty of bad dialogue in this comic.
13:59So I'm just trying to assume that this is more bad dialogue because the writers are incompetent.
14:05It doesn't mean anything.
14:08If it was really meant to mean anything, well too bad because nothing is actually canon unless it's in the
14:16source material itself.
14:18Internet canon isn't canon because you can say whatever you want on social media.
14:24And he also just assumes these two are Soleil's parents when they look the same as the others for no
14:29reason.
14:31I guess maybe they have minute differences.
14:34He's not really gonna care about that.
14:38He gets away from them just fine but I can't really tell why they stopped being able to keep running
14:43because they didn't see anything impact them.
14:45I have to assume one tripped on the stone and the right one got spin jumped.
14:50What's the point of a fight if you're not seeing the impact?
14:54Sonic then does the Sonic says lecture that was done to coconuts unironically all over again with just as little
15:01nuance with an organic being so it's even dumber.
15:06He wouldn't lecture him on running away without a plan.
15:09He'd tell him the obvious plan.
15:11To just tell the cops his parents broke his phone and he wants to live with foster parents instead.
15:16I'm not saying that you should stay in a situation that's hurting you.
15:21But you should stay in a situation that's hurting you.
15:24How is he so stupid?
15:27He compliments him on the wall jumping and says he's gotta show his parents that.
15:31And he's immediately able to remove the mask convinced to humor him.
15:36And the bridge they're standing on collapses and Sonic spin dashes to wall jump off a bunch of rocks to
15:42get to him.
15:43And then he imitates it precisely.
15:46That was easy for a non-playable character.
15:49It's nice but I had no reason to actually like this character beyond thinking the bare minimum of great writing
15:56by giving him a backstory.
15:57So I'm just taken out of it by the preferential treatment of him having a spin dash already.
16:03Maybe if he had more than one personality trait.
16:07Eventually Sonic compliments him and because he didn't do something that his parents already knew as an acrobatic move.
16:13They aren't impressed.
16:15Somehow seeing his parents not respecting him again doesn't cause him to go back to being lunar.
16:22And instead he goes on a long predictable boring speech in favor of him doing whatever he wants instead.
16:28Surprisingly his mom sides with him even though she's just as bad as him.
16:33As proven by her having no problem with his phone being broken.
16:38There could have been foreshadowing that established her having an actual character of her own because there was a thought
16:44bubble where she had a problem with it.
16:47This is so confusing and out of nowhere that I don't care about the sentimental drivel.
16:53It already established there are monsters so I should have any respect for this.
16:58It feels like a rushed happy ending to a storyline like this.
17:02We didn't know anything about these two.
17:05Now I just have to assume the father is only rushing to humor his mom when supporting him because he
17:10doesn't want a divorce.
17:13I don't give a shit that these two look goofy and act goofy.
17:17That doesn't change the fact that they're abusive parents.
17:21So it is really disappointing that they didn't get beaten up.
17:25They were supposed to have a fight.
17:27And somehow they both think to say the same two things at once despite not being on the same wavelength
17:33with each other earlier.
17:35Shadow shows up damaging the bridge because he landed on it so hard.
17:40And he talks right away so that no one can explain things to him in time.
17:44So he goes after the emeralds but Sonic saves away from him and inexplicably the jesters with Tails who were
17:50nothing but pure evil had agreed to go with Tails back to Sonic.
17:56Again there wasn't any foreshadowing to them not being monsters because there wasn't any indication that they thought it was
18:03a line too far to damage his phone.
18:07It's not like this would have felt any more natural by actually seeing what they said to each other because
18:11either way they were still selfish and fanatical enough to act threateningly towards someone for wanting to quit a job
18:17and not care that his phone was damaged.
18:20No amount of extra screen time on people like that would have made this believable.
18:26Sonic's hanging off to the edge of a bridge with his other hand holding his sleighs over an ocean.
18:31Aside from the setting this is like when he and Percival were in this position.
18:35Shadow wall jumps and somehow in all the time Tails is taking to make the plan he wasn't fast enough
18:41to get to him before the jesters could form a bridge to bring him to Tails.
18:45Oh right the jesters are faster than Sonic.
18:49Shadow at least gets to explain that the emeralds won't be safe until he has it, somehow not commenting in
18:55awe about someone being faster than him.
18:58And Sonic doesn't explain that the emeralds aren't going to be taken again because he talks some sense into Soleil.
19:04It'd make sense if someone was paranoid as Shadow not to believe it'd be that easy.
19:09So I guess Sonic thought he wouldn't trust Soleil anyway so why bother convincing him.
19:13But he also doesn't just humor someone as selfish and unreasonable as him right here and avoid getting himself hurt.
19:20And I just have to assume it's because since Tails is his friend he really wants them to have the
19:24emerald to power stuff.
19:26All I get to see of their fight is them spin dashing into each other once.
19:31Rouge takes the emerald and stupidly draws attention to herself from anyone who might disapprove by telling everyone about it.
19:39Shadow lets her take it because he prefers her having it over him.
19:44Out of nowhere the incredibly stubborn Sonic who is fighting someone over the right for Tails to keep the emerald
19:50that he could go super with later because he's got an attitude.
19:53Just calmly decides to stop fighting for the emerald.
19:57If the writer knows this is anticlimactic there's no excuse for writing him like this anyways.
20:03Rouge could have kept Sonic busy while Shadow warped away with it.
20:05If she's supposed to be used to silently running away with jewels because she hasn't gotten put in prison yet.
20:13Her just doing that would have had it be believable that Sonic lost the emerald.
20:18It turns out there's a giant mecca of Eggmans under the ocean all along.
20:21And that ends the story.
20:23This issue by Evan Stanley felt like a bafflingly crappy resolution because of how forced and anticlimactic this whole thing
20:31is.
20:32Shadow and Rouge were forced by the writer to magically not catch up with Sonic and to split up.
20:37And after all the build up to a whole issue of fighting there was barely any.
20:42I didn't get to enjoy seeing anybody get hit and hating it even once.
20:47And the only person that was hit was Shadow and Sonic one time and neither of them seemed to mind
20:53because they were in a ball form.
20:55It was better than I thought because it established that all the jesters are all faster than Sonic.
21:01Which isn't impossible.
21:04But it should have been commented on by Sonic and Shadow and thought bubbles.
21:08Because it's so rare for someone to be so fast.
21:12So it might feel like preferential treatment to the point of immersion breaking because they're so lucky.
21:19And Soleil just wanted to run away from Sonic.
21:22Which explains why he doesn't instantly knock them all out with rapid fire attacks.
21:27Because Sonic only cares about catching up with Soleil.
21:31I thought it would be another infuriating fight where the heroes stay in one small area and let their enemies
21:36talk for no reason when Sonic could end in seconds.
21:39But instead Sonic prevented the people who were faster than him from catching up with him.
21:44At least it was a surprise and creative.
21:47But I just had a cocked eyebrow at the end of it because of the unnecessary, unearned, sappy redemption of
21:52abusive parents after Sonic gave a dangerous lecture that you should never run away from abusive parents.
21:59Somehow the story goes from establishing that his parents were abusive enough to break his phone without remorse.
22:05To magically being nice and supportive to end the storyline without even getting to fight anyone first.
22:11They didn't get enough scenes to establish that they actually love Soleil enough to stop being jerks to him because
22:15they don't spend most of their time with the main characters.
22:18So we only just met them and there's no way the main characters would be with them.
22:22Or if they did it'd feel like forced padding.
22:25And then as soon as we'd see the phone get broken we would hate them even more for turning out
22:29to be abusive anyway because it'd feel forced.
22:31And then we'd be even less supportive in understanding of their redemption.
22:35The issue should have shown them buying him a new phone.
22:38They do nothing to make up for this.
22:40I don't have extremely low standards.
22:43So I'm not forgiving them for this.
22:46And somehow Sonic magically goes from wanting the Emerald enough to fight Shadow over it to calmly letting him get
22:51away with it just because someone weaker than him came to back him up.
22:55If you're gonna have Shadow fight Sonic you're supposed to give us the catharsis of them hitting each other a
23:00bunch of times and looking in pain from the attacks.
23:02There thank you guys now.
23:02So let's go ahead and sit.
