00:00Issue 84
00:02Surprisingly, the story starts with showing what Belle's been up to and establishing that people actually came up to her
00:09for help despite her looking like a robot.
00:12So the comic's trusting us to figure out on her own that this makes sense because news of her working
00:18at the restoration would have spread so everyone knows about her.
00:22It would have felt natural right away if we had been told that earlier.
00:27Instead, it was never established that anyone but the small amount of people she works around trust her and we
00:32didn't see any of those people tell others about her and she wasn't caught on camera doing anything heroic.
00:39It makes sense if they posted about her on social media and so word spread about her.
00:48It's just that we weren't told about that.
00:52Maybe it would have felt more satisfying narratively if we had seen her try to earn the trust of the
01:00people she went to and succeeded.
01:03Someone calls his daughter Sweetie and reassures her so that's nice.
01:09And the artist bothered to come up with a creative design for Motobud.
01:14He thanks her for fixing a doll.
01:17I'd care more if she was established to have fixed something useful and important.
01:23She's nice enough to reject any reward.
01:26And then Eggman takes control of her body and has got real tension but wasn't mean spirited enough to have
01:32her hurt anyone.
01:34And somehow she's still able to talk despite that requiring her mouth to be able to move.
01:41She shouldn't have needed to tell Motobud to shock her to get him to do it.
01:46Apparently she was smart enough to have already thought up a way to get back to normal if this happened.
01:53What took Eggman so long to try to do this to her?
01:57There's no way he would have waited so long.
02:00It should have said he was too busy.
02:04And because of a Deus Ex Machina she magically gets freed from his control just from being shocked.
02:11Even if it was that a stirring part of her got wrecked from it and that freed her.
02:16That wouldn't be all that got damaged and she would have just removed it a long time ago to avoid
02:21this.
02:22And you'd think she would be suffering from the damage afterwards.
02:27Of course Eggman explains that why he was able to do this was that the data she exchanged with Metal
02:33Sonic made her prone to his control.
02:36Apparently he's been able to directly control robots from far away for a while.
02:41Even though that'd only be something he'd bother with for this because he would have to personally focus on controlling
02:47that one robot and he wouldn't get anything out of that.
02:51Because that one robot isn't nearly as likely to win as a huge mecha he'd be fighting Sonic with.
02:58She says she asks Tails to scan her and he found his Trojan code.
03:04He wouldn't quarantine it because apparently the guy who made a fake Chaos Emerald is too stupid to do that.
03:12Or to delete it by simply highlighting the code with a mouse and pressing the backspace key.
03:19Even though he was able to help Omega.
03:22This is all to make her look good because she got to come up with the idea that Motobud could
03:27override her motor functions until he gives up on it.
03:31Somehow she decides to tell him to try asking nicely even though she has no reason to think he wants
03:36her for any reason she'd be okay with.
03:39Eggman reveals that Metal Sonic's gone missing along with supplies so he needs a unique link between them to regain
03:45control of them.
03:47I thought the reason he was able to get control of her through Metal Sonic was because he could control
03:52any robot ever from afar.
03:55So he could control Metal Sonic from afar.
03:59Instead it looked like he only put that feature into Metal Sonic.
04:02Which makes sense for him because he's the robot who betrayed him.
04:07And if he was able to control any robot of his from afar, which would be pointless to program into
04:12most of the robots, he would have done this to Omega.
04:16So now it looks like he's an idiot for not doing that to Omega a while ago.
04:20Maybe he shouldn't have established he could do this.
04:23Again, Belle cares about Metal Sonic being in trouble because he's a fellow robot made by Eggman.
04:28So she agrees to help but only if she gets to bring Sonic.
04:32It's sort of character referred to smirk at Eggman.
04:36It comes off as preferential treatment from Evan Stanley because she wants her character to look cool.
04:41But she'd just be looking serious because she wishes Eggman wasn't evil.
04:46And what she's capable of doing is already cool.
04:50Eggman agrees because he's got no other choice but to tell her what she wants to hear to get her
04:55to help.
04:55So Belle got to triumph over Eggman.
04:59That doesn't sound believable out of context.
05:03Well, he is a jerk so it is karma in universe.
05:06And she's doing this with the power of her mind which is actually consistent with her character.
05:11He gets to feel better by telling himself that Sonic would have shown up anyways.
05:16Which would only be true if Tails had a way to track her down to wherever he took her.
05:20That would explain how Vector tracked her down.
05:23He sends her Metal Sonic to the last known location.
05:27Eggman gets ridden to compliment someone who just wounded his ego by one-upping her.
05:32I guess from the logic that he made her so he's proud of himself for making her so smart even
05:37though it backfired on him.
05:39But this isn't how he reacted to Metal Sonic having the forethought and being cunning enough to lock him in
05:44a room because he always loses.
05:46To be fair he didn't make Metal Sonic to be like a son to him.
05:50While Belle is like a daughter to him.
05:53So it's just a matter of old habits dying hard to justify this.
05:57Cubot says that when they find Metal Sonic they should make him attack the heroes and somehow thinks they won't
06:02see it coming after all their experience with him.
06:04For no reason he was made to be forgetful enough to forget they can't give him the command to attack.
06:11It's just as forced that he has a conscience saying that would be rude.
06:15Then why did he even consider making that plan against them?
06:20It's not like Eggman awards him by the plan.
06:24Eggman assumes Belle is going to try to cheat him again.
06:27She did make some other robots good so why wouldn't she do that to Metal Sonic?
06:33Couldn't she bring the thing that they used to make robots good and use it against Metal Sonic?
06:39Well I guess not because they would see it and smash it.
06:44And she's too stupid to just put that as a part of her.
06:49He says that whoever stole Metal Sonic could just undo her work.
06:54He wants to rely on someone that Sonic won't immediately see as a threat and so he releases Sage.
06:59Someone that only helped Sonic on an obviously temporary basis to kill a common enemy so he would immediately see
07:05her as a threat.
07:07There's no way he would think she wouldn't want to get Metal Sonic back.
07:11It's nice to see them hug her and call her little sis.
07:15But then she ruins it by not appreciating the hug.
07:18Even though she liked Eggman holding her hand and she thought of them as her brothers so she would appreciate
07:24effecturing from them too.
07:26Apparently outright hugs are too much because they restrict her movement.
07:31Even though you're also having her movement restricted by having her hand held.
07:36And she has super strength so she can just move back fast enough to conveniently get out of their grip.
07:42Eggman would give her super strength out of preferential treatment.
07:46It's just another thing that's confusing at first because that wasn't shown in the games.
07:50The writer somehow thinks anybody reading this needs to be told two stages.
07:56Eggman wouldn't tell her what she was designed for because she already knows.
08:01He tells her to retreat to safety immediately if the situation gets too dangerous.
08:05She somehow calls him sir instead of father like in the game.
08:09This is more like the Japanese script.
08:12Even though the first script written for Sonic Frontiers was in English and the characters are lip synced to English.
08:19Which obviously means that the English version of it is the canon one.
08:24And the entire point of Sage as a character is to do something new with Eggman by making him treat
08:28someone like a daughter.
08:30But she's still not calling him dad.
08:33He never got shown outright telling her it was okay so she would keep on the side of caution because
08:38she's always been cautious.
08:41But father's a synonym for dad.
08:43And it just seems like missing the point of her to half-ass using her.
08:47Not like I'd want her to make him out of character by being too much of a softy.
08:51It's just confusing because the whole point of this is to be like the games by continuing something from the
08:58games.
08:58So I'm confused that it's not being like the games even in a positive way.
09:03It turns out Sonic is sitting on something that's moving much slower than he would while sitting beside Belle.
09:08And that's because she wants to keep Motobud with her and he wouldn't be able to keep up with him
09:13if he ran while carrying her.
09:16I'm glad they came up with an actual use for Motobud.
09:19She thanks Sonic and apologizes in a sympathetically awkward way for this.
09:23It goes easy on her because he'd rather Metal be with the jerk he knows than when he doesn't.
09:29Which makes sense because he might find out what Metal does with Eggman after he does it.
09:33And even if he doesn't at least he knows what kinds of things he does with him.
09:36He doesn't explain that so it seems silly.
09:39Because either way Metal would be used to hurt innocent people and steal and there's no way that whoever took
09:44him would be a bigger threat than Eggman.
09:46That guy isn't in control of all of Eggman's stuff across the world and never will be.
09:52At least not for more than a day.
09:54I get to see Sonic getting startled and he sees Sage again who's called Ghost by Belle because of her
10:00appearance.
10:01This is a world where ghosts look a very specific way.
10:05So you'd think that anyone who knows about the concept of ghosts in this world would know they only look
10:11a certain way.
10:13There's some predictable dialogue that we wouldn't feel immersed in the situation without getting.
10:18Including us getting to see a new side of Belle because Sage being seen as a daughter to Eggman gets
10:23her jealous.
10:24And they bicker because Sage underestimated Belle's intelligence enough to think she didn't already know that her vehicle isn't equipped
10:31for the snowy terrain and weather.
10:32It cuts to a few hours later and Sonic hasn't frozen to death by now.
10:38The fact that he's allowed to wear his scarf makes it completely forced that he doesn't have any more winter
10:44clothes than that.
10:46Now I really wish he was outright explained that rings protect him from frostbite and he's getting them the whole
10:51time.
10:52But it's an obvious conclusion anyways from the games.
10:56At least this is a good story so far.
10:59It's keeping me mostly immersed in it.
11:02Somehow Sonic thinks he would be able to convince Sage to let them stop the search for the night.
11:07Sage says his organic limits have become a liability even though she did predict this.
11:13It's just so she can be bickered with again.
11:16She insults the inside of the carriage for no apparent reason and at least gets called out on it a
11:21little before a loud noise happens to prevent an argument.
11:24They bore me talking too much about this and Sonic hopes it really isn't from an orc which is a
11:31nice reference to one of the gangs and he says ow but I don't get to see the impact anyways.
11:37He has to run away from some flying line within a blue blur.
11:42Real scary looking.
11:43And the carriage is knocked over and Belle wants to rescue Motobud from it and they find out it's Metal
11:49Sonic except he looks different which is creative and creepy.
11:54Belle can't link with him as he's politely letting them talk without hurting them for no reason.
12:01Sonic protects Belle and immediately figures out he should get his friends to safety first but then he somehow just
12:07stands there talking instead of doing it in seconds.
12:12And again the robot does nothing for no reason so the heroes could talk in safety instead of having to
12:17dodge attacks the whole time.
12:20That's convenient for preventing him from attacking Sage.
12:25Which would have raised the stakes in our mind.
12:28Sonic would be holding him back right now.
12:31Sage detects a cave network nearby because of satellite data.
12:36They're on a frozen lake that starts cracking under them which worries them as they're running into the cave.
12:43I think that was new.
12:45I feel like it's new to the Sonic franchise but Sonic was definitely on a frozen lake that started cracking
12:54under him in Ian Flynn's other M comic.
12:57Sonic and Belle both kick some big things hanging from the ceiling and it turns out Metal Sonic can't follow
13:04them into it.
13:06Sonic thanks her and says sorry because she's in pain from what she did.
13:10For once they get to see Sonic complain about Sage and not get along with her.
13:14He says that now they have time to think of a plan.
13:17She can't reach the Egg Connect this deep underground.
13:21Egg Connect's not that competent apparently.
13:25After padding, Sage sees multiple different ways to go and because she doesn't know where to go, Belle gets a
13:31chance to make fun of her again.
13:33I like that they got to do something new with her that's in character that doesn't just involve having her
13:37be as sympathetic as possible and morally perfect for once.
13:42After she calls Sonic out on telling her to shut up, she asks if he's going to replace her too.
13:47And naturally, since of course he wouldn't prefer her when he hates her, she realizes she was being unusually harsh
13:54and apologizes.
13:56He reassures her and puts his hand on her shoulder right away and she thanks him.
14:01He tries to reassure her that Sage isn't a replacement for her because her dynamic with Eggman was just an
14:06accident even though she still did end up being a replacement for her.
14:11Somehow Sage was too stupid to understand what's been going on and doesn't like his tone.
14:16Even though he's just got a happy tone.
14:18Why is one of the computer screens of the bad guys showing Surgeon Kit and why is Surgeon Tripping Kit?
14:24She's never been shown to be the type to bully him.
14:28To be fair, it would make sense that she turned against him if it's because she found out he rigged
14:32away for her to be a hero and she didn't appreciate that it was all fake and that he was
14:36risking her getting in trouble.
14:38Instead, I just have to assume this and it's more likely that she's only being written to act like this
14:42because she was a bully type even though she only acted like that towards Sonic and Starline for good reason
14:48and the only way she was rude to Kit was verbally.
14:51Why should I believe this is the case when there's so many other unanswered plot holes?
14:57The villain talks the same way as Clutch and Mimic and Starline.
15:01They all talk the same.
15:03Cliche, off-puttingly pretentious way.
15:06I like that one of the computer screens shows Amy still boxing for the sake of exercise like she did
15:12in Sonic Battle.
15:14But I questioned the logic of all the Sonic Battle references in this comic when most people hated that game.
15:22The only thing wonderful about it was that it had a hub world, but it was a hub world where
15:26you could walk to Angel Island for no reason.
15:30This issue by Evan Stanley and Ian Flynn had Sonic go with Bell to a snowy place to try to
15:37get back control of Metal Sonic for Eggman because Sonic's worried that he'd be made to do something even worse
15:42than what Eggman would do with him if he's working for someone new who works so under the radar that
15:47he didn't know anything he was doing besides the emerald thefts.
15:50Though I shouldn't have to just assume that's his logic.
15:53If that's not his logic, well so what if it's someone else making him work for him?
15:59He deals with people who aren't Eggman just as easily.
16:03It was actually fine to read.
16:06Most of the time I wasn't bored by it and it was interesting not only because of the premise but
16:11because it had Bell and Sage interacting and it got all that I could out of it.
16:16At least I think so.
16:18It's too bad that because of all of the padding the story ended without revealing who the villain was.
16:24Because I'm really impatient to learn that.
16:26It's too bad.
