00:00Does Deshaun Watson get your blood going?
00:01No.
00:02No, not in the slightest.
00:03I have zero interest in Deshaun Watson at all.
00:06None.
00:08I'm not even looking forward to watching him in training camp.
00:12Would you do the Chris Fedor and say you'd poke your eyes out?
00:14Although he said that in response to Shador, not necessarily Deshaun.
00:17He said that about Shador?
00:18Yeah, he said he'd rather poke his eyes out than watch Shador play football.
00:21So he'd rather watch Deshaun than Shador?
00:22That's the assumption there, yeah.
00:24Wow.
00:24I mean, I don't know.
00:25I didn't talk to him.
00:26I just saw the clip last week.
00:27Maybe the follow-up there was I'd also poke my eyes out of watching Deshaun.
00:31I feel the way you feel, though.
00:32I feel the opposite.
00:33I'd rather watch Dylan Gabriel than Deshaun.
00:37Oh, yeah.
00:38If you told me I could choose one or the other, and I think both would fail miserably.
00:44I'm not going to think that one would be a million times better than the other.
00:47I just feel very confident in the idea that Deshaun Watson's going to suck at this.
00:52Yeah, I'm not getting caught up.
00:53I see the videos that are being posted on social media, and good for him.
00:57And his people putting that stuff out there to show that he's working and all that, whatever.
01:02Put a defense on the field.
01:04Then I will judge whether or not Deshaun can play or not.
01:07I'm not getting hyped up over workout video.
01:10It's workout video season.
01:11That's where we're at in the offseason.
01:13It's vacation workout video season, and that's fine.
01:17I'm not going to get caught up in all that kind of stuff.
01:20I mean, I like that he's here.
01:22I think that's nice.
01:23Yeah, good for him.
01:24There's a seriousness.
01:25He's putting in the work.
01:26I mean, he's putting in the work.
01:27There's no question about that.
01:28For people that thought this was one big farce and wasn't actually a competition and was all just going to
01:33end up with some sort of, I don't know,
01:35some idea that Deshaun wasn't actually really going to ever try to get on the field, it's obviously disproven that.
01:41No, well, last year should have shut those people up because there was no reason for him to open up
01:47that practice window or try and get that practice window opened,
01:51and he basically fought for that, and so they did.
01:56They opened it, and obviously they shut him down after that.
02:00I respect that he's taking this very seriously.
02:01I respect that after the idea that he could just have his $230 million and after this season just kind
02:08of walk away and never be seen again and just kind of call it a football life,
02:12which, by the way, if I were him, that's probably what I would do.
02:14Maybe that's why I'm not a pro athlete.
02:16I would just take the $230 million, take all the scrutiny, and just give everyone the double bird and walk
02:21away and say,
02:22I'll see you guys on the other side, right?
02:24I'm going to go retire to Greece with my wife, and you'll never hear from me again.
02:28But he's not taking that route at all.
02:30In fact, this is kind of the scary part in thinking about this with Haslam and with Andrew Barry in
02:36general.
02:37He seems to feel like he can have a redemption story.
02:41He seems to feel like he can redeem this whole entire thing, and I guess, who am I to argue
02:46that he can't?
02:47I don't think it's going to happen, but if he thinks one season can be the snowball effect to all
02:53of a sudden having his whole entire football life rewritten,
02:57I guess I can respect that he's taking it serious and thinks it can happen.
03:00I just don't believe that it can.
03:02No, I don't think that he's going to return to the player that he was or that the Browns thought
03:07that they were going to be getting when they made that trade and gave him that insane contract.
03:12There's all sorts of quarterbacks, Darrell, that have rewritten their football life and have rewritten their stuff.
03:16After so many times, we in society, we do tend to forget largely.
03:21Now, Deshaun's story will never go away.
03:24That's such a big part of it.
03:25The same way Big Ben's story was such a big part of it.
03:27It's never going to go away.
03:29But there are guys like Jameis Winston, for instance, where it becomes a footnote and doesn't necessarily define them.
03:35But, I mean, it's been six years for this guy.
03:38He's played 19 games in six years.
03:41And I just don't, first of all, I don't think it's fair to Deshaun.
03:44And believe me, I'm the last person that's ever going to really defend him on anything.
03:49But in this case, I will because there has to be some fairness and some objectivity when it comes to
03:55this situation.
03:56Do I think he's going to be any good this year?
03:58No.
03:58Would I rather watch Dylan Gabriel play than him?
04:00Absolutely.
04:01And we know how much I enjoy watching Dylan Gabriel play football.
04:04Not at all.
04:06I'd rather start Taylon Green than I think Dylan Gabriel.
04:09Oh, Coach Riz is not going to like that comment.
04:11But to be fair to Deshaun, I don't think it's realistic to just expect that this guy is going to
04:17be able to be the same player.
04:18And I think that there are some people that are trying to, including the Cleveland Browns,
04:23that are trying to talk themselves into, oh, this guy is going to come back and he's going to be
04:28good enough to help us win some games.
04:31And he's going to be electrifying at times.
04:34And I just, I have no expectation.
04:36Here's what I remember.
04:38Here's my last real football memory of Deshaun Watson.
04:43Okay.
04:43It was the joint practice against the Minnesota Vikings.
04:46All right.
04:47They couldn't even line up correctly.
04:49All right.
04:50And Deshaun had one of the worst practices you'll ever see by a quarterback.
04:54Okay.
04:55Yeah.
04:55And the other side of that, that was the MJ Emerson joint practice session where MJ, there's a lot that
05:00happened with Justin Jefferson.
05:01Right.
05:01But everyone in Minnesota left being like, who's this MJ Emerson guy?
05:04He's awesome.
05:05Yeah.
05:05So, like, that's my, that's the lasting image there, right?
05:09Because, again, he wasn't being actually sacked or in risk of being touched or whatever.
05:13And that was just a disaster.
05:15And, unfortunately, that basically told us what was about to happen, which, by the way, happened, right, in those first
05:24six and a half games before he got hurt.
05:26Right.
05:27So, I have no expectation that Deshaun Watson's going to do anything for the Browns this year.
05:32If he does, okay, great.
05:34And a lot of this, I imagine, is based off of, obviously, what you've seen in the past.
05:37But a lot of this is being based off of what you've seen already, right?
05:40Is that correct?
05:41Yeah.
05:41It's been six years since this guy has done anything.
05:43I mean, in practices.
05:44Yeah.
05:44I mean, like, the things that I, while I'm on the air talking to everybody here, you're out of the
05:48practices and you're seeing things.
05:50It's Jekyll and Hyde.
05:51One minute, he makes a brilliant throw.
05:52I'm like, ooh, this guy's still got it.
05:54And then he kills a worm just throwing a dump-off screen pass.
06:00So, yeah, I mean, he'll hit a guy in the hands 30 yards down the field and then miss a
06:05guy by five yards.
06:06Like, it's just, it's consistently inconsistent with this guy right now.
06:10And it's part of the reason why this whole quarterback thing isn't settled going into training camp.
06:15And I don't think it's going to be settled, probably, until after that joint practice with the Bills.
06:19Was it August 20th, I believe it's going to be?
06:21Like, we're going to have five weeks of this, I think, at least, of this training camp competition because neither
06:30one of these guys has really separated or distinguished themselves on a level where, like, yeah, that's the guy.
06:36So, but, yeah, I just, I want to be fair to Deshaun here, too, and just be like, yeah, I'm
06:41not going to hype people up about this guy, that he's going to come back and he's going to, you
06:45know, work miracles after playing 19 games over six years.
06:49I just don't think, I just don't think it's realistic.
06:51Yeah, no, I'm with you.
06:52The fact that he's, look, the fact that he got himself back on the field, respect for that.
06:56The fact that he's taken this seriously and he's put in the work and all that, respect, okay?
07:01That he's not just cashed the check and, you know, gone off into retirement or whatever.
07:05Okay, I respect all of that.
07:07There, no one, I don't think anyone has accused Deshaun Watson of a lack of effort or a lack of,
07:14I don't know, trying or however you want to define that, right?
07:18Or putting in the work.
07:19No one has accused him of not doing that, right?
07:22Yeah.
07:23So, and I think that that's important, but that doesn't, just because he's put in the work and he's still
07:28putting in the work, again, the Instagram videos, he's over in Berea doing stuff.
07:31What do you make of those Instagram videos?
07:32Nothing, because it's on air and it doesn't matter.
07:36Great, fantastic.
07:37I knew you wouldn't be a fan, that's all.
07:38I just, I knew that.
07:39Yeah, I just, I don't care about workout videos other than just kind of like taking attendance.
07:44Great to see Harold Fanny Jr. is working with him.
07:46Great.
07:46That means that Harold's healthy and fantastic.
07:49We'll see him all at training camp.
07:50But the reality is, is that to have any expectation that Deshaun is going to be able to elevate or
07:59salvage the upcoming season, I just, I don't think it's fair.
08:02I don't think it's realistic.
08:03I'm not expecting it.
08:05One, one bit.
08:07And, you know, anything he does is gravy at this point, because I think it's a sunk cost.
08:13Here's what Field Yates on ESPN had to say about the Browns and this competition.
08:16This is the truest quarterback competition in the NFL.
08:20What I mean by that is, whoever performs best in training camp should be the week one starter.
08:24There are other quarterback competitions where if you have a young quarterback and he narrowly outperforms the veteran quarterback in
08:31training camp, I still would lean on the veteran early in the season to alleviate some of the pressure on
08:37a young player.
08:37And Cleveland, whether it's Shador Sanders, Deshaun Watson, maybe even Dylan Gabriel, whichever one performs best in training camp should
08:44be on the field for that opening week.
08:46Oh, I couldn't disagree more with Field Yates in that last sentiment there.
08:50Ty does not go to the veteran in this instance because the veteran is on the final year of his
08:55deal.
08:55In this instance, the tie goes to Shador and should always go to Shador.
08:59The guy that could be on the roster next year and the guy that if you give 17 games, you
09:03can actually find out if he could be something as far as an answer is concerned.
09:07Now, he's got to show that he can be.
09:09That's still on Shador to display that, but I know I strongly disagree with Field Yates on that one.
09:15I think most quarterback races, he's right.
09:17Most quarterback races, you give it to the veteran and you go from there.
09:20Not in this one.
09:22Yeah, and this is what I always say about quarterback competitions.
09:26If you have to have a quarterback competition, you don't have a quarterback.
09:31And unfortunately, we've done so many of these here in Cleveland that it's just like, am I excited?
09:37No, I'm not excited about that.
09:38This is like the 20th one I've covered.
09:41Like, this is just...
09:43Oh, yeah, that's the power rankings we need.
09:45Yeah, I mean, it's just...
09:46Your favorite quarterback competition.
09:48Just absolutely does nothing.
09:49You got a doctorate in quarterback competitions.
09:52Yeah, it just...
09:53Well, is he quarterback competitions?
09:54Not necessarily even like good ones.
09:56And look, I have a PhD in bad quarterback play.
10:00I know what it looks like because that's all I've seen.
10:04Some are wondering, does that make it hard to diagnose good quarterback play, Daryl?
10:07Trust me, I have a feeling when I see a good quarterback play, I'm going to know it.
10:11Hold on, and I don't mean to make this anything against you guys and the people that cover the Browns.
10:15It's just you guys have gone through so much bad football, and I do think it is one of those
10:18things.
10:19I think Lima first pointed this out, and I've always agreed with it.
10:21Although his first practice here, Deshaun's first practice here was mesmerizing.
10:25It was, I'm not going to lie.
10:27And I remember that, and it looked great.
10:28It did.
10:28It was like the greatest practice I've ever seen.
10:31But because we've been hampered by such bad quarterback play for so long...
10:34I was like, ooh, ball made it 40 yards down the field without being dropped, and it was a tight
10:39spiral.
10:39When you make like a 25-yard over-the-middle pass, we lose our minds.
10:43I know.
10:43When you make normal passes that NFL teams see all the time, we lose our minds.
10:48Jonathan, when Eric Mangini was the coach, the lead note in my practice notebook was the fact that they scored
10:55one touchdown in a drill.
10:57Like, they actually scored a touchdown in a drill.
11:00Yeah, it's tough.
11:01Okay?
11:01Yeah.
11:02That's where I come from.
11:04Yeah, that's tough.
11:05Okay?
11:07I'm going to put your good quarterback skill up against a lot of people here.
11:10You know how to do bad quarterbacks.
11:12You think I'm joking and being facetious?
11:13You know how to diagnose bad quarterbacks.
11:14I don't know.
11:14Corrales in here looking at me like I'm outside of my mind.
11:17No, I'm not joking with you.
11:18I think he's just hungry.
11:20They scored one touchdown in a practice, and that was the lead note.
11:24No, I'm not joking with you.
