00:00Let's head out to the Make It Right. Call Kyle Wright Hotline. No transition at all.
00:04No.
00:04And welcome in Lance Reisland, Cleveland.com, 92.3 The Fan.
00:08What's up, Coach?
00:10What's going on, guys? How are you today?
00:12Doing very well. How about yourself?
00:14Good, good.
00:14I'm hanging in there, absolutely. Good day. I mean, groundbreaking day, right?
00:18I don't know what that means, but that's what day it is.
00:21So it's where they're breaking ground in the new stadium, Coach.
00:24I mean, I know what it is. I still don't understand why it's a thing, I guess.
00:28Well, because they've got to break ground on it.
00:30They've got to pat each other on the back.
00:30I know they did it months ago, though.
00:32That's what we thought, too.
00:33No, that was a fake one.
00:35That was the warm-up.
00:35Yeah, they were just moving stuff around.
00:37This is when they're really breaking ground.
00:39We played preseason football for a reason, Coach.
00:41That was like their version of preseason football.
00:44Okay, that's fair.
00:46This is when the games count.
00:48So Nick wanted to yell at you in a way that I did yesterday,
00:51but he wanted to do it, I think, in a more intense version.
00:55I'm not sure.
00:55It got pretty intense with us anyway yesterday.
00:57No, I just don't know.
00:58So, Coach, why are you entertaining the idea that Deshaun Watson
01:03should be anywhere near the field for this year?
01:07The point being is that everything that's happened up to this point
01:10doesn't matter.
01:11I disagree.
01:12I disagree, too.
01:15As we discussed yesterday, I understand that.
01:18But here's the thing.
01:19When you bring a new guy in, those things matter.
01:21The injuries I will give you, there's an injury factor there.
01:24But if, you know, and JP was talking about, you know,
01:27some of the things with, like, agendas with those guys and politics,
01:31all those things, those things matter.
01:32If Munkin truly is in charge and he has more pool and is not a puppet like
01:36Kevin was or everybody thought he was or whatever you want to say,
01:40then he's going to play the best guy.
01:41Those are my words.
01:41That's why, yeah.
01:43And if you want to – and if you look at a quarterback situation right now,
01:48it means nothing.
01:49But to say he's in charge, to say that Deshaun is in front,
01:52that makes a ton of sense to me right now.
01:54It's early on.
01:55It's three practices.
01:56We haven't seen the meetings.
01:57We haven't seen the film breakdown.
01:59We have the film breakdowns when they're in the film room.
02:01We haven't seen any of that.
02:02And to say that a guy who has been in the league almost 10 years
02:05probably knows a little bit more because really the three practices
02:08meant nothing but the install mentally, that makes a lot of sense to me.
02:12That tells me they're kind of going about it right.
02:14There's going to be a lot of time to make plays.
02:15There's going to be a lot of time to decide who the number one quarterback is.
02:19But to say that he has no chance and we know exactly what we're going to get from him,
02:23I don't agree with that because all the things that happen.
02:26Now, injury-wise, I'm on board with.
02:28It's hard to stay healthy and he's had some injury issues.
02:30But we don't know if he's going to be any good.
02:31We have no idea.
02:33And with Munkin, maybe he will.
02:34Can we maybe look at the last six years and go,
02:36let's inform our opinions that he might just stink?
02:39Yeah.
02:40Sure, absolutely.
02:41And I think with health and an offense that fits more of his skill set,
02:47being able to make plays with guys in space,
02:50I think you can argue that he could have some success as well.
02:53I also, it really is not about Deshaun for me, to point it out.
02:57And I said that yesterday.
02:58It's about the best guy playing.
03:00And it's not about anything else than the best guy.
03:03And if it's Shador, great.
03:04If it's Deshaun, great.
03:06I want the guys who practice.
03:08And, you know, the argument is we know what we're going to get.
03:09I've heard everybody say, well, we know he's going to be really good in practice.
03:12We know he's going to be really good in seven-on-seven.
03:15That's where you decide stuff.
03:16In the NFL, you don't get to be a gamer.
03:18You've got to go out and practice well.
03:19And if that's the case, then that'll be the next step for Shador.
03:22He'll go out there because he seems like a pretty competitive kid,
03:24and he'll practice better.
03:26And once again, though, I thought he did a great job when he got his opportunity last year,
03:29and I look forward to seeing him doing that this year.
03:31If he can't beat Watson now, I want to win week one.
03:34I'm not worried about 2027.
03:35I'm not worried about week six.
03:36I'm worried about week one.
03:38And if Watson's the guy week one, I'm going with Watson.
03:40So here's what I want to ask you, because I thought a lot about this,
03:42and I genuinely want to lean on your expertise here, okay?
03:45Because you know this world.
03:46You're very good at this.
03:47I trust you.
03:49What I wasn't able to convey in the best of ways yesterday,
03:51although I thought I made a lot of good points,
03:53the idea that I'm going to do golf with you, okay?
03:56Because you're a golfer.
03:57I'm a golfer.
03:58A lot of people out there listening are golfers right now.
04:00Coach, there are a lot of golfers that on the driving range
04:03can absolutely stripe the ball.
04:05And then the moment they step up to when the actual game counts,
04:07when you're scoring and you're playing, you're 18,
04:10it's a completely different story.
04:11You've been there.
04:12I've been there, I'm sure, where you're like,
04:15I'm great on the range.
04:16I can't make it translate.
04:19What do the Browns do with the idea that I'm convinced Deshaun Watson's the
04:22football version of that?
04:23He is fantastic in practices.
04:25Always has been, always will be.
04:26He'll look like the better quarterback in these practices.
04:28The hard part he's having, something's not translating to the games.
04:32And whether that's mental, whether that's, you tell me what that is,
04:36but there's something that isn't clicking for Deshaun where he can look so
04:39awesome in these practices always, and then you get to the games,
04:43and all of a sudden his driver's slicing 200 yards to the right.
04:47Well, you know, obviously it depends on what course you're playing, right?
04:50So if you're playing an easy course, it's open.
04:51When you slice it, you get away with it.
04:53There's a lot of variables, right?
04:54And I think he's had a lot of variables, including himself.
04:56He has not played at the level he did.
04:58And whatever that is, I don't know.
05:00My initial camp, my initial thoughts on the first day,
05:02which mean absolutely nothing, but I thought he looked healthy.
05:05And that was my point with the first day.
05:06I thought he looked healthy and fit,
05:08which gives him a chance to be successful because he seems like he's in great
05:11shape.
05:12His footwork is very good.
05:13So was Shador's.
05:14They both looked really outstanding, in my opinion, fit-wise,
05:17and you can tell they've been working on their stuff.
05:19Now the translation, that makes a ton of sense, but that doesn't,
05:22that's assuming, you know, Munkin had been here for, if it was Kevin Stefanski,
05:27I would say, yeah, he's had, he's done this, been there.
05:30Munkin doesn't care about that.
05:31Munkin is simply saying, hey, I'm going to play the best guy right now.
05:35What has happened in the past does not matter.
05:37Now, if we get to the point where he's great in practice and can't carry it
05:40over to the game,
05:41then Shador's got to be right there with him in practice and saying, all right,
05:44even though Watson's been better in practice, so is Shador.
05:47Now we've got to make that move.
05:48And I think you go with the idea that Munkin's not looking back at all,
05:53and nor should I, I don't think he should.
05:55And you're right, you know, Nick, when you say, well, you know,
05:58you can form some opinions, I agree with that.
06:00There has been some injuries and there's been some play issues,
06:03but there's also been some offensive line issues.
06:05There's, once again, him as well, but there's been other variables and the line,
06:10the receivers, et cetera, all that kind of stuff, the coaching, the system,
06:13whatever it is, the idea of it's a new look,
06:16new offense gives him a chance because he's good at making plays.
06:20And this is what this offense is.
06:22It's a space, you know, it's a pace and space kind of offense.
06:25And I'm interested to see what he does, but I don't really care if it's him
06:28or, you know, Shador.
06:30I just want the best guy to play and hopefully they push each other.
06:35All right, Coach.
06:37How many wins do you think the Browns added this offseason?
06:42If they were a five-win team last year,
06:45how many wins ahead do you think they are right now?
06:48Well, this is, you know, you guys always ask me this question.
06:52It's a hard one for me because I think we can win them all.
06:54And I truly believe that.
06:55I know you guys know that with me now.
06:56I truly believe you can win them all.
06:57Do we always ask this question, Coach?
06:59Are we asking win-loss questions too much?
07:03No, no, I bring it up with the burger bets.
07:05That's my fault.
07:05I bring it up with the burger bets.
07:06I'm going to put that on me.
07:07Accountability, I like that.
07:08Yeah.
07:09That's a good burger, by the way, Coach.
07:11That was a top shelf.
07:12Of all the people that have paid off a burger,
07:14you delivered better than anyone.
07:16Well, I appreciate that.
07:17You got to own it when you lose, right?
07:19That's kind of my thing.
07:20So I owned it when I lost.
07:21Tell that to John Fanta.
07:23You're never seeing that burger.
07:24Never.
07:26So I would say this.
07:27I would say they've been – so defensively,
07:30there's a chance they take a step back, but not for long
07:32because everybody's older.
07:34Everybody's – and this Rutenberg guy, I love his mentality.
07:38He's a defensive coordinator.
07:39You can just tell he likes what he does.
07:41They're going to be fine because they've got great players on that side.
07:44And two of the guys are going to be older.
07:46Graham and Swester are going to be older.
07:47This is going to be a really good defense.
07:49So if they won five last year and they – obviously they have –
07:53I think they've doubled their wins.
07:54I think they go to ten wins.
07:55I really do.
07:56Because of the fact they have that fourth – they have the fourth-place schedule.
07:59They could have won seven – not they should have.
08:01They could have won games last year with special teams in offense
08:04if they had just a little bit.
08:06And you're going to see – for me, you're going to see complementary football.
08:08And what complementary football allows this defense to do is be elite
08:11because they're going to have some leads maybe.
08:14And then they could turn it loose.
08:15And they don't have to make all the plays.
08:17And part of being in the league defense is that you have two other phases
08:20that don't cost you.
08:21They don't have to be dominant, but they can't cost you.
08:23And that's what I think the offense and special teams did last year.
08:26They cost that defense.
08:27So I'll say with that schedule, I'm going to say they double it.
08:30I'm going to say they go – I'm going to say ten wins.
08:32All right.
08:32So add you to the list.
08:33Emery Hunt at ten wins.
08:35Mack at 12.
08:37Coach Riz at ten.
08:38You need to get him on a burger bet
08:41because you already got Mack snaked into a good burger bet here.
08:44Ten can happen.
08:45What I loved about 12, I would take a burger bet with 12 wins
08:48with any team in the league that anybody mentions.
08:51That's the thing about 12.
08:52The Buffalo Bills?
08:52Yeah.
08:53If you want a burger bet on the Bills winning 12 games,
08:56I'll take that right now.
08:57Literally any team you mention, I'll take a 12-game burger bet on.
09:02Ten game, different story.
09:03Coach?
09:04Anyway.
09:04Coach, and that sound about the right price for you?
09:07I want you guys to burger bet.
09:09I don't want a burger bet.
09:10All right.
09:11Sounds like you want a burger bet.
09:12Coach, we've had a lot of discussion this week.
09:14I didn't get to ask you anything about this yesterday.
09:15The people that think that Fano is maybe not a left tackle
09:20and was drafted to be a left tackle but can't play left tackle
09:23or won't be able to play left tackle at the next level,
09:25what would you say to those people?
09:28Well, you know, he ran 4-9-1.
09:30And as impressive as some of these 4-2 guys, 4-3 guys,
09:33I would argue at 311 pounds, 4-9-1 is one of the most impressive things you can do.
09:37That big body running at 4-9-1, that's incredibly impressive.
09:41So his feet are really, really good.
09:43And I would say this.
09:44As a unit, you want those guys to be an elite unit.
09:48Now, obviously, if you take them that high to get back your whatever the value,
09:52what everybody talks about, which I don't really understand,
09:55you know, obviously take them with the ninth pick.
09:57You need that left tackle.
09:58But if he had to move inside and be a 10-year starter and maybe an all-pro two or
10:03three times
10:04and just a really good football player, I think you'd take that.
10:06Obviously, they've got to answer those questions at left tackle.
10:09I think he can play left tackle because, first of all, the arm length,
10:12he's about one quarter of an inch short.
10:15It's not like he's got, you know, he's not T-Rex.
10:16He's got long enough arms, and his feet make up for it
10:20because he's a guy that will be able to cut off the corner with his feet.
10:24And if you watch him on film, the reason he doesn't get beat most of the time
10:28is because he's beating the defensive end there.
10:30So, obviously, he'll have his moments where he's got to work,
10:34especially on the strength, but in terms of guys beating him around the corner,
10:38I don't think it's going to happen because of that.
10:39Now, what will hurt him is the speed to power, which guys like Miles will give him,
10:44these NFL guys will give him.
10:45That will be a learning curve for him for sure.
10:48But this is a guy with really light feet, and for me, it's all about movement.
10:51If you can move that left tackle, you've got a chance to be pretty successful on Sundays.
10:55All right, friend, we appreciate you.
10:58Didn't really get the fight that I wanted to
11:00because I think JP and I both wanted that fight a little bit,
11:03but I still appreciate you.
11:05I want you to know that.
11:06Well, what about, you know, I want you to think about,
11:09you owe me a burger bet, so think about the number.
11:11No, I don't owe you a burger bet.
11:14Hey, listen, you don't, I mean, I owned my part, right?
11:17You've got to give that back to me, don't you?
11:19You've got a burger bet with me and you're lost.
11:21That doesn't mean I owe you a rematch.
11:23Burger bets come to Nick.
11:24Nick doesn't go to burger bets.
11:26That is true.
11:27That's fair.
11:28They've got to speak to Nick.
11:30He really uses that feeling he has in his loins.
11:32Is that what you say?
11:33Yeah, my loin feeling.
11:34And then, like, once that gets just kind of, like,
11:36once it activates, then all of a sudden he knows.
11:39Starts to hum.
11:40He knows, like, oh, that's a burger bet.
11:42That's so a burger bet.
11:45Loin activation is the key for the burger bet.
11:47That's right.
11:47You got it.
11:48Exactly.
11:48Just activate my loins, coach.
11:50Okay?
11:51I appreciate you.
11:52Yeah, got it.
11:53I appreciate you guys a ton, man.
11:55Thank you, coach.
11:56Bye-bye.
11:56He wants to go so bad.
