01:07So, as we talk about this, I want to play for you Cameron Wolfe, who was out here yesterday in
01:13Berea.
01:13I don't know if he's out here today, but he had this report after a conversation with Todd Munkin on
01:18the Browns' preseason quarterback plans.
01:21They're going to have their preseason games.
01:22Munkin told me that he's going to start one guy the first preseason game.
01:26The other will start the second preseason game.
01:28At that point, they will start to go upon the process of making the decision for the starter.
01:32They obviously want to have one for week one, but they are not in a rush to make this decision
01:37yet.
01:38But Sanders' late practices in the spring and early practices in the camp have certainly helped himself in a competition
01:44that looked early on it might go Deshaun's way.
01:47So, what's interesting about this is, so this just made sense.
01:51This made sense with how the Browns have handled trading off the ones and twos for the two starting quarterback
01:57candidates.
01:58And so, I didn't really think anything about it.

02:01No, it kind of is like, listen, I think Shador's taking the edge, but if Munkin wants to play this
02:07out, I guess I understand it.
02:08The last part just seemed kind of obvious.
02:10I think for myself and maybe some other people, we're looking at the idea of, oh, so they're going to
02:14rotate, continue to rotate off.
02:16One's going to get the first preseason game.
02:17One's going to get the second preseason game.
02:19And then the third is going to go to basically who's done the best job, which would imply that it
02:23would be telling you who the starter is somewhere after the second preseason game is done.

02:28Well, then Todd Munkin was asked about it earlier today.
02:32And he modified maybe what Cam Wolfe said yesterday.
02:36Cam took a little liberties with what our conversation was like.
02:40Basically, we talked about that the quarterbacks are going to play in the preseason.
02:45And obviously, if it's still a competition that time, why wouldn't you start one and start the other?
02:50And then we would go from there.
02:51That was really what the conversation was.
02:53He wasn't wrong in what we talked about, which you've all known that, that they're going to play in the
02:57preseason.
02:58And someone has to go out there for the first snap.
03:01Thus, they would be the one that starts.
03:02But at this point, we're so far from that that it's not really as important as what it kind of
03:08got made out to be.
03:10All right.
03:10So I hear Todd Munkin with a clarification.
03:15But maybe it's because I'm not the smartest guy in the world.
03:18What was the clarification, actually?
03:20No, it sounded like he was basically like he's telling you that Cam was right in everything that he said.
03:26And Cam took some liberties.
03:28Really, it's more of a media story than it is a Brown story.
03:30But what's the liberties?
03:31That's the thing I'm trying to figure out.

03:35The liberties part of it, I guess, is just the idea that he said something that he wasn't supposed to

03:41And that's maybe Munkin's way of acknowledging the idea that maybe Cam spoke and wasn't supposed to speak on it

03:48But then he tried saying, this is all things I've already told you guys.

03:52I haven't heard him lay it out that way.
03:54Maybe he has.
03:55I've listened to every press conference he's done as a Browns head coach.
03:58So maybe I missed it because sometimes, you know, AirPods cut in and out.

04:03But I haven't heard him lay it out that way.
04:06But I just found it interesting that he's actually getting after a media member and putting his name on it.
04:10Because clearly he cares about how this is being perceived right now.
04:13Yeah, and I mean, even, you know, I continue to hear the Browns kind of slow play this.
04:17You know, Todd Munkin there saying, you know, we're not there yet.
04:21I understand why they're playing the long game, just optically.
04:26Why they're out here saying, we're not there yet.
04:28And everybody's taking the bait and saying, well, they're not really grading.

04:33Absolutely.
04:34Guys, they grade everything.
04:36That's what good organizations do.
04:38They grade how people do the sprinkler system after practice.
04:41And so the idea that there isn't an early favorite, a week into camp now, a week plus into camp,
04:46that's not how this works.
04:48The idea that they're like, we're going to withhold judgment till installs.
04:51It's not how it works.
04:53Why did he get so mad about the optics of him laying out a plan that he's already said he
04:57said publicly?
04:58Like, why is he so concerned about that?
05:00Because I don't think he wants to give anybody in this locker room, specifically the quarterbacks, a feeling that this
05:07is close to decided.
05:09Or is this where he gets mad at the last part that you picked up on, the idea that Cam
05:13said he thought that Shador Sanders wasn't the lead on this?
05:16Because if you're just going to lay out the plan with Munkin and say you talked to Munkin, are you
05:20giving the impression that Munkin believes that Shador Sanders is the leader in the clubhouse right now?

05:24Maybe that's where he got a little upset.
05:25I think Todd is very smart.
05:27And I think Todd knows that every little thing that is said out there is going to be picked up
05:33by the guys in the locker room.
05:34And if Deshaun's already struggling with confidence, which I really like people like, I don't know if it's, you know,
05:39I don't know if it's, you know, like pointing to their head or somewhere else.
05:42And it's like, guys, if he's a step slow and he looks unconfident, there's no other place it could be
05:46than the head.
05:47Which I would tell you that if Munkin speaking to the media or Munkin speaking to Cameron Wolfe behind the
05:53scenes is enough to just completely derail Deshaun.
05:55And it might be based off of what we see with his mentality.
05:59But I'd tell you that he's beyond cooked.
06:01Well, no, correct.
06:02But if you're Todd Munkin, you don't just give up on a player because you think they're cooked.
06:06Deshaun still might end up having to be a useful part of this.
06:09You might get to a point this season where you've got to rely on him.
06:12And so you don't want anything to kind of sow the seeds of discontent or just further whatever funk Deshaun
06:19has appeared to be.
06:20If he doesn't get the starting job, though, even if you need him later on, the message has been sent
06:23loud and clear.
06:25Well, I think, again, that's why the message was not rebuked necessarily because it was a very gentle, ah, took
06:31some liberties.
06:32He didn't seem pissed about it.
06:33He just seemed like, I want to clarify it.
06:35I mean, he said it by name, which is just something that they don't typically do, even if asked by
06:40Cam Rolfe, said this on the NFL Network.
06:43It was an odd positioning of him.
06:45I think Todd is just a different guy.
06:47I think we're so conditioned to the non-answer to this, you know, Ivy League coaching operation.
06:53Yeah, Stefanski would have shut it down immediately.
06:55Stefanski wouldn't even acknowledge that he even talked to NFL Network yesterday.
06:58So I think Todd actually pretty decently walked the line of pushing back on a report that maybe something out
07:05of that he didn't want out there,
07:07while also looking at this and going, all right, I'm not going to completely blast the guy.
07:12Well, but there's also then, the implication here is that Munkin clearly has a plan for how he wants to
07:16do this.
07:17Is he going to stay stubborn with that plan if it becomes obvious that Deshaun is not up to task,
07:22like it was obvious yesterday that he's not up to task?
07:24It seems like this is his plan.
07:26He's not going to really move off of it.
07:27The other reason why it's nice to see Deshaun do this is I can already see the narrative emerging that
07:35if Shador is adequate and Deshaun Watson fumbles this job,
07:39there are going to be people, Lima, there are going to be people who just say, well, did Shador really
07:45win the job or did Deshaun lose it?
07:48So I'm glad to see Deshaun's actually playing well today.
07:52Yeah, I mean, it's going to be at least, now we have a fight, you know, it really kind of
07:57felt like after yesterday,
07:58Shador was just going to continue to run away with this, and then by next week, it wouldn't be a,
08:02hey, this is a quarterback competition,
08:04it's going to be a countdown to getting Shador ready for week one.
08:07If Deshaun puts together some of these days, it can all flip on a dime.
08:11I don't think it will.
08:12I think this is a good day for Deshaun, but it can change awfully quickly.
08:15The one thing people kept saying out of the past couple practices, Nick,
08:18is the idea that he's making the right decisions, and I argued that with Coach Riz, for instance,
08:25but like he said, he's making the right decisions, he's just late on actually getting the ball there,
08:29and it's taking him too long.
08:31Well, processing can get sped up.
08:32You can work on that.
08:34I just don't know that you can work on that overnight and all of a sudden see the dividends.

08:40Again, it is in the Browns' best interest that all of their four quarterbacks end up having positive camps
08:48because I do think that's only going to make that offense come together quickly
08:52when you finally do name your starter.
08:54Like, it's funny to me when people talk about earning it and not earning it,
08:57and they're not out here.
08:59Say what you want about Deshaun.
09:00Again, I'm over the Deshaun thing.
09:02I can't say that enough.
09:04I want to make sure I'm not moving off that.
09:06But, like, yeah, Deshaun pushing Shador is good for Shador,
09:10and I think it's good for the competitiveness in what Munkin's,
09:14the tone Munkin's trying to set with his team.
09:16Well, and this is why Munkin's going to take this to at least pass that second preseason game
09:20is that idea that he's waiting for Deshaun to have a day like today,
09:24and then you see what happens.
09:25And, by the way, day's not over yet.
09:26He could still fumble this.
09:27But, like, have a day like today.
09:29You feeling the heat a little bit?
09:30He should be feeling the heat a little bit if we're being honest.
09:33He's the one that's got to start compounding days together
09:35and has to start making it less of a Shador is winning all these days to,
09:39oh, my gosh, Deshaun is doing this back-to-back-to-back days.
09:42Let's stack some days so we can have a real competition here.

10:17if the other person just falls flat on their face, though.

10:23I think we're missing out on the fact that Shador has looked fine.
10:27Listen, nobody is more prepared to give Shador his flowers
10:30and say, great job, you won the competition,
10:32you've earned this, you've done this the right way,
10:34and on and on the list goes.
10:35But if it had continued like it had yesterday into today
10:38and for the next two weeks where Deshaun looked like
10:41he just wasn't even a passable quarterback,
10:44then it would have been a lot more about how Deshaun did not have it,
10:47wasn't prepared, didn't have anything to begin with,
10:50and it was about Shador just grabbing it.
10:52So I want to be clear here.
10:54I believe you're correct,
10:56and I do believe that there are a lot of people
10:58who the only way any one of these quarterbacks
11:00is going to get any modicum of credit from them
11:04is if they just go out there and look like Joe Montana circa 1988.
11:09But I look at it and I go, you know, again,
11:12I do think that Shador is going to get more credit,
11:14or whoever wins the job.
11:16I don't just want to make it Deshaun.
11:17Whoever wins the job is going to get more credit in that locker room.
11:20The, oh, Deshaun lost it feels very like a sports talk angle to me
11:25instead of how these guys think.
11:27I mean, biggest glow-up from the quarterback room in this class so far
11:29is Dylan Gabriel.

11:31You know, like we talk about people that have raised their stock,
11:33actually raised value in this camp so far.
11:36Shador's done some nice things,
11:37and he's obviously winning the battle between him and Deshaun Watson.
11:40Dylan Gabriel, oddly enough,
11:42is the one that people are lining up to give their credit to.
11:44But even that's like a media thing.
11:45Like, we just completely wrote Dylan off.
11:48Dylan's having some good moments in practice,
11:52mostly against second, third, and fourth stringers.

11:55So it's like, it's just so, you know, this is,
11:58I think there are a lot of people who are very telling
12:01with how they feel about any of these quarterbacks
12:05just based on how they're going to kind of spin this thing.
12:08As of right now, like, Shador, guys,
12:11I was told Shador was the worst quarterback in the NFL last year
12:14and that he's unplayable.
12:16And yet, I'm hearing the word adequate.
12:19I'm hearing good enough.
12:21Solid is the word I keep hearing.
