00:00Well on game day we have another partner Jeff blows me off I blow Jeff off and we bring in
00:05somebody way more knowledgeable than the two of us he is Tyvus Paul former Buckeye Bedford
00:11Hall of Famer not to mention uh various NFL jerseys across the league and right now Tyvus
00:17is on the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline hi Tyvus how are you
00:23you did that phenomenally you know how many times I looked over at that boy on Saturday
00:29and said that wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline oh I said it good job
00:35man he was all excited about hearing it for him well all right I haven't had a chance to talk
00:46to
00:46you and I think sometimes when I listen to the postgame show for you guys you tend to be the
00:50voice of reason not that Jeff isn't the voice of reason but I think oh yeah because I freak out
00:54on
00:54that show don't I I just think I think fans that sometimes you can you kind of calm folks down
01:01with a little bit of player reality so uh just give me your overall interpretation for anybody that
01:07didn't hear it uh after the game on Saturday yeah no I thought that Deshaun walked and went in there
01:12and I thought he looked good I thought he ran the offense really well thought the ball came out his
01:17hands really quickly um I thought that obviously you didn't like you didn't love the fumble that he
01:24had and only one play he had was when he tried to throw it I want to say it was
01:28Casey Concepcioni
01:29threw a little bit in the dirt there was only two passes that uh I didn't really love from him
01:35would love to see us push the ball down the field a little bit more I think that's what you
01:39got with
01:39your door when he came in he showed you he could push the ball down the field uh his bad
01:44plays was he
01:44had he fumbled the snap that was one uh had one batted pass and then he sailed the pick uh
01:51the
01:51little over the dig route or whatever outside of those three I thought that Shador showed a lot of
01:57growth from last year looked very comfortable in the pocket even when he was being blitzed
02:01bought himself some time didn't retreat or anything like that got the ball out down the field
02:06for some explosive plays um defensively wise I thought the ones was good Michael Coach Jr. was the
02:13highlight of the day uh Jeff knows how I feel about him um outside of that the twos and threes
02:21got a lot
02:21of work to do do you think Deshaun executed Tyvis what he was being asked to or do you think
02:28that was
02:29just what he's physically and maybe maybe scheme wise capable of doing right now I think that the
02:36first 15 plays were scripted I think that he did a great job of hitting the drive starters getting things
02:42going trying to catch a rhythm and you know one of your ideas what completions equals uh confidence
02:46you know you the more you complete the more confidence you get this is a guy who hasn't
02:50played in two years so I think he's just trying to get himself into the groove of things uh ultimately
02:56I think it'll be interesting to see how he does in Buffalo um being that if he will push the
03:00ball
03:01down the field because he won't have the first 15 plays scripted um so he'll be coming in and trying
03:06to do his own thing get his own rhythm going um it was I was watching some highlights of seeing
03:10it
03:11was a couple of downfield throws that he could have taken but he kind of didn't pull the trigger
03:15on him um so I love to see him make improvements on that for the next game uh let's talk
03:21about depth
03:22and I know we talked about this before the game too secondary depth is uh going to be really
03:27interesting you guys are a little banged up obviously it seems like they got to go out and get some
03:31help there but um just your thoughts on that yeah I mean that we've been saying this for like two
03:37years two three years now they need some depth in the secondary you know if the starters is good but
03:42if one of those guys get hurt it's gonna be a little people's gonna be nervous for that next guy
03:46jogging in the game um like I said Michael Coates had two really good plays the PBU was really good
03:52and the interception was good I think he operated out of that nickel position so that really doesn't help
03:56you know for the outside guys um outside there yeah it was a whole lot of nothing there um so
04:02they got to figure that out um like I said just when I when I was talking to Jeff about
04:06it after the
04:07game what I was telling him was you know it just it seems like it's a bunch of guys that
04:13aren't knowledgeable of football of what's going on and what I mean by that is I mean like
04:17you know when you're a young guy out there you're worried about trying to get your assignment you
04:22worried about what you have you know and you don't really necessarily take a look at the offense
04:27to see what they look like they're doing what did my coach tell me about these certain formations
04:32what's this offensive coordinator's tendencies in certain situations you know you don't think
04:36about those things you're just worried about making sure that you got your assignment right
04:40and I think we got to get past that um because I feel like you know some of the stuff
04:45right now is
04:46just vanilla playing Jane offense and I feel like we should be able to see what's about to happen
04:51and have a good idea for it I just feel like we're not there and I just I think that
04:54that's
04:55just because guys haven't played a lot of football uh in this league Tyvis Powell joining us you hear
05:00him on the Browns Radio Network Andy pregame with me on postgame Jared Verst spoke today Tyvis that guy
05:06he said I I'm really disrespectful to my teammates at practice I love the energy this guy's brought to
05:15the team what what have you thought of him so far as a member of the Browns I think I
05:19understand
05:20exactly why Andrew Barry made it a requirement that he's in that that that trade you know I think
05:25that Miles is a great talent and he's one of one he's obviously a walking hall of famer um but
05:31I
05:31don't know how Miles was in a locker room when you listen to this guy talk he's the vocal leader
05:35that
05:36you wanted Miles to one day be you know he's that guy that can get guys going he can uh
05:41get up and
05:42motivate an entire defense and things like that he's being really good for these young guys you know
05:47getting Spencer Fano ready to go by starting fights with him and going at him every day in
05:51practice to let him know like hey you know I'm one of the best in this league you get you're
05:56not
05:56gonna see too many people better than me so if you can stop me you should be good in this
06:00league you
06:00know and I think that he's done a great job of just getting guys ready to go um and putting
06:06a lot
06:06of faith and confidence in the rest of that defense you know so I think that he's been what the
06:11Browns kind of needed in that locker room for right now uh Tybus I mean you did a pretty good
06:17tour around the NFL when you played how many I'm just trying to think off the top of my head
06:20did you run into any first year head coaches in the NFL um I think when I got to San
06:28Fran I believe
06:29that was Kyle Shanahan's first year was Kyle's first year in San Francisco 2017 yeah that would have been
06:36if it was then he was one yeah I knew that so the bigger question is is what what do
06:42first year
06:42head coaches what don't they know you know what I'm saying like when you've got an experienced head
06:49coach there's a difference isn't there or is there not you tell me you know better than I mean
06:55yeah I mean you because the first year you spent a lot of the first year trying to set the
07:00culture
07:01you're trying to find the guys that fit what you're looking for right and you you have to deal
07:06with the the last coaching staff's guys and how they ran things so you got to try to break guys
07:12of
07:12that habit and get them to see things the way you wanted to be seen that to me is what
07:17year one is
07:18all about is getting guys to buy into what you're selling because it's hard to it's hard for guys
07:24especially guys that seen success in the NFL to just drop what they know and just go off of what
07:30you're saying you know because they feel like they got it I got it I've been in this league for
07:34years I know what to do to get ready you know so it's a lot of that going on for
07:39that first year
07:39and until you go out there and go into battle and show that you're putting these guys in the right
07:44position to succeed it's going to be you're going to fight that uphill battle all year long
07:49Tyvis I would think Todd Munkin has something that could certainly be an advantage for him and that
07:55is that he is a first-time NFL head coach and other teams probably don't know what his
08:00what his ultimate offense might look like they can look at the Baltimore stuff and everything else
08:04but in this situation they don't know so how do you put together a preseason game plan
08:10that can give you the opportunity to evaluate your own players while not giving up too much of what
08:17you might be doing once it starts counting for real I think that what you do is you try to
08:23that's
08:23why practice is so important because you try to do everything you can to get those game like
08:28situations so you can see how guys respond when you get to the game you know that's just football
08:33that's just seeing how good of a football player you are you know just fundamentally sound because
08:38there won't be any gimmicks or anything like that in the middle of those games because they don't want
08:43to show their playbook so that's why like this Thursday when they go joint practice against
08:47Buffalo that's why it's a big day you know everybody's worried about the quarterbacks but there's
08:51other guys that's also looking at this as their Super Bowl you know because this is their only chance to
08:56really show showcase that they can get things done against other NFL teams so I think that that's
09:02kind of how you got to navigate this practice putting them in in situations that you want to see
09:07how they handle those situations and you hope that guys is giving you 110 percent uh Tyvus give me what
09:14you really like give me give me a couple positives from Saturday and I mean I thought you're pretty
09:19positive right out of the gate but things that fans should be excited about even though sometimes it
09:24looks a little murky I think that you should be excited about the wide receiver core I think that
09:30with uh bond um Boston Concepcion and even sprinkle Judy in there I know Harold Fanner dropped the ball
09:37but I think that you got four legitimate playmakers right there that can make that can do some things
09:42that can stretch the field and that's an ask that's part of the offense that we haven't seen
09:46in quite some years you know Amari Cooper was the last great receiver that we had that really
09:51made a difference in game I think you got those four guys that can absolutely take over a game at
09:57any
09:57given moment um so that's one thing to be excited about I thought the offensive line was okay in the
10:02passing attack what I need to worry what I was worried about was the run game uh you you think
10:07against the twos you get a lot more push there and I didn't see that uh on the defensive side
10:12of the
10:12ball I think that they're pretty solidified there um you just hope that you know we haven't seen a lot
10:18of Carson Swessinger we haven't seen a lot of we haven't seen Malik Collins and Mike Hall's been
10:22missing but when we seen those guys early on they seem like they were right where they left off you
10:27know the last time we seen them they all were very productive so you hope that you continue to get
10:31that and that defense for them not to have Miles Hart Miles Hart excuse me Miles Garrett and uh Jim
10:38Schwartz it still looks like a really good defense uh hopefully don't know what Dale Pitt went out
10:43with hopefully it wasn't nothing too serious how do you make sure Quinchon Judkins gets an amazing
10:50amount of touches while still getting Dylan Sampson enough where he can impact the game
10:56I think that that right there goes off the flow of the game you know you got to look at
11:00your
11:00offensive line and see what they're getting done if they're getting a push you know obviously you
11:03ride Quinchon's shoulders on that one you let him do his thing because that's that's where he thrives at
11:08if they're not getting that much of a push and it's getting kind of stalemated on that
11:12offensive line then you insert a Dylan Sampson in there you know that kind of you know you said
11:16you run those screens and things like that that slows a defensive line down because they can't
11:21be so aggressive so I think it's just about playing the game you know if they're if you see
11:25your offensive line starting to struggle throw a screen pass in there not at not at D line is
11:29thinking about screens anytime Dylan Sampson's in the game now you can run the ball and maybe catch
11:34them off guard and stuff like that so I think it's just about mixing and matching that the whole
11:38entire game and seeing how that offensive line is responding to that defensive line that they're
11:42going against Tyvus let's do it again on Saturday I will see you on the pregame show and then of
11:47course we'll always hear you on the postgame show uh on the Browns Radio Network right here on 92.3
11:51the fan thank you Tyvus I appreciate you guys go Bucks thanks buddy talk to you late oh number one
