00:00How are you guys doing? Welcome back to the Morning Roasted Podcast.
00:04This is your host Caleb Thompson and we're going to have a good one for you today.
00:07If you guys can excuse my voice, I make these early in the morning, but I want to make sure
00:12that I get these episodes out here
00:16so that you guys could start your morning off right.
00:19So I had to make sure that I make these early in the morning, so excuse the voice.
00:24This is before coffee. I'm making some now, but back to business.
00:30So today's episode is going to be time blocking versus task list.
00:35I recorded this yesterday. I actually didn't go through.
00:39We didn't get the audio, so let's go ahead and let's do it again.
00:44But I want to make sure that you guys understand the difference between time blocking versus task list
00:49and which one is the most important.
00:53Me, myself, I'm going to give you three talk points as I usually do.
00:57Sorry, I'm mumbling over my words, but I'm going to give you three talk points as I usually do
01:02just to stay on track of where we're headed with this episode.
01:06But time blocking versus task list, which really works.
01:13So first off, I want to tell you what time blocking is.
01:15Time blocking is this.
01:16Every hour of my day is blocked.
01:22Time blocking basically means that every hour of my day I have strategically set that hour aside
01:29to do some type of task or make some type of effort towards completing a goal.
01:35Just say if I wake up from 3 to 5 o'clock in the morning, that's the time I work
01:39out.
01:40That time is blocked.
01:42It's time blocked to working out 3 to 5.
01:44And in between that time, I do nothing else but working out.
01:47So that's time blocking.
01:48So task list, which people know is task list, is just like making a grocery store list.
01:53Or, you know, a grocery store list of things to do list, basically, of things you want to accomplish.
02:00So that's what time blocking is and that's what task lists are.
02:04But we want to know which one really works.
02:07So we want to know which one really works.
02:09So, you know, upon writing this, I came to the realization that they both work and I use both.
02:19So when I first started, I first started off, like, even being an entrepreneur, you really need to have some
02:25type of structure when it comes to your time.
02:27So, you know, that's a non-negotiable.
02:30It's a non-negotiable that you spend your time wisely.
02:33There will be a down time where you can, you know, you can chill, you can sit back, you can
02:38enjoy your day, maybe watch a movie.
02:41I don't really know too many entrepreneurs who watch movies like that.
02:44They're always moving, talking, having some type of connection.
02:48But there is whatever they do in their down time.
02:51There will be some down time for you guys to chill and relax, play golf, whatever you want to do.
02:56But this is what I believe.
03:02So I believe, I don't see, we want to know which one is the best, but I do not see
03:08time blocking and task lists as competitors.
03:10I see them as partners.
03:12So like I was saying before, so one thing that I've learned is that asking rather than time blocking and
03:17task lists are better.
03:19It basically misses a point.
03:20So you might be asking the wrong questions too.
03:22So it's, you know, when people ask this when they want to go into entrepreneurship or they just want to
03:29structure their life, all this depends on your life.
03:32You know, it really starts with you structuring your day and then you may pour into entrepreneurship.
03:38But you need to take these disciplines and apply them to your regular life every day.
03:43But time blocking tells you exactly when you're going to do something, when you're going to perform the, what time
03:52have you set aside to perform a certain, accomplish something that you have to do that day.
04:00So time blocking tells you when you're going to work, but your task list tells you what you're going to
04:06accomplish, what you're going to work on.
04:07So, uh, I look at them as a hybrid and I use a hybrid as well.
04:12Like I said, I started off doing task lists.
04:14I'll make a task list for the entire day and I'll go throughout the entire day.
04:17Uh, just get, cause I looked at it like just getting those small wins.
04:21Okay.
04:21I would make a task list for anything, you know, just to see that I'm accomplishing something.
04:28Like I'll put, you know, a clean, uh, clean apartment, uh, cook dinner, wash clothes, things like, things like that.
04:36You know what I mean?
04:37Uh, uh, marketing calendar, uh, uh, inventory rotation.
04:41And I didn't, I didn't have a specific time when I wanted to do it.
04:45So I just had one big task list for the entire day.
04:47So that's how I started off when I became an entrepreneur using those task lists.
04:51I've always heard like, um, like, uh, you know, like my mom used to tell me like, you know, when
04:58you go into a grocery store, when you go into a grocery store, what you want to do is you
05:02want to create a list.
05:04Because if you don't create a list, then when you go into the store, then you just, you know, you're
05:07going to be buying stuff with your eyes and with your stomach at that present moment.
05:11Then when you take it back home, you take it back home, you're going to be like, I don't know
05:15why I bought four boxes of food rollers.
05:16I probably just wanted some at the time.
05:18I don't know why I bought, you know, this or bought that.
05:21You know what I'm saying?
05:21And now you just bought all these, this random stuff and you didn't have a complete meal in mind.
05:26So that's the same thing about like with this, um, with a task list, you know what I mean?
05:32Uh, same thing with, without having a task list and with having the task, uh, uh, with having a time
05:39block, but no task list, you know what I'm saying?
05:41You know, you have to do something, you know, you have to go grocery shopping, but you have no, uh,
05:46no clear cut, uh, uh, uh, idea of exactly what you knew doing that time.
05:53So, but the most productive system isn't choosing one over the other time blocking, uh, time blocking the task list
05:59is using both of them together.
06:00So what I do is I assign a purpose, uh, a purpose to every time block, like we just, uh,
06:08discussed.
06:08So I realized that simply blocking two hours of my calendar isn't enough.
06:12So you basically need to, uh, need a clear objective, uh, for that time.
06:17So when I block time for marketing, sales, let's say finance, creative work, uh, let's say into the time I've
06:26already reserved, but this helps me to like stay focused.
06:30That's what I say focused because I know exactly what success looks like before the day begins.
06:35And I asked someone, man, I know exactly what success look like, looks like before the day begins.
06:40And why I say that is like, uh, anything that I need to do for the rest of the week,
06:45it's already been planned out.
06:46It's already been written down.
06:48You know what I mean?
06:49And some people don't even have, have, you know, certain things that they need to do for it for today.
06:53And that's not, and I'm not, I'm not, I'm not saying anything like that, but what I am saying is
06:57this, you need to start.
06:59If you need to do something as small as feed the dog, write it down, write it down and knock
07:04it off the list.
07:05So you can have a list of 10 things that you need to do.
07:08It'd be very small things, things that you probably do every day anyways.
07:13And then what you'll do is what it does is it tricks the brain into, uh, it rewires the brain
07:19that helps you to have a visual.
07:21Not only a visual where you'll be able to see it, but it helps your brain to get used to
07:26winning.
07:26And so when you make those small task lists, let's say, man, I don't care if it's a man, uh,
07:32uh, start with stuff you already do.
07:34Brush my teeth, uh, brush my teeth, uh, fold my clothes, clean my house, uh, uh, take a shower, uh,
07:42work out or watch the news.
07:44I don't care what, I don't care what it is, but start off with those small, uh, the small everyday
07:49tasks and write a list.
07:51And when you write a list and you start to check those things off of the list, uh, which are
07:55things that you already normally do, what is, what it does is it starts to rewire your brain to get
08:00used to winning and used to accomplishing things.
08:03So, uh, where it becomes like a flow state.
08:05So, uh, and you have to start with small things.
08:08Don't put, you know, uh, uh, you're trying to check, uh, get $200 million off your list.
08:14No, it's not going to happen.
08:16Uh, uh, well, anything can happen, man.
08:19I'm not going to say it like that, but you need to be working towards something in order for it
08:23to happen.
08:23You don't know why it's just going to knock on your door and give you $200 million, but you need
08:27to be, uh, you need to have some type of value that you bring into the world that the world
08:31needs to make it.
08:32Where, where that you will have that frequency, where that type of money will be able to meet you on
08:37that type of frequency.
08:39That's all money is.
08:40Money is frequency.
08:41That's all, all it is.
08:42It's money is fake.
08:44Really.
08:44It's not really a real, a real thing.
08:47It's just energy.
08:48You know, you want something bad to happen to you?
08:50You gotta just stay in the low frequency and think about it all day or not without thinking about it.
08:55You know what I'm saying?
08:55You want to think about, you thinking about love, you know what I'm saying?
08:59You can attract a partner, attract someone, you know, and you can also.
09:02Subtract people that will be obsessed with you.
09:04So you have to be careful about where you, uh, direct your energy towards.
09:10Even thinking about, uh, uh, having a spouse or something like that, man.
09:14If you don't direct your energy specifically towards exactly what you want and what type of thing you want, that
09:20energy is just out there.
09:22You know what I mean?
09:22It's out there.
09:23It's around you.
09:24It's in your oil.
09:24Anybody can grab it.
09:26You know what I mean?
09:26And, and, and, you know, it costs people to be obsessive, obsessed with you by you just, uh, uh, you
09:33know, you know what I mean?
09:35But, uh, yeah, be careful, man.
09:37Where you put your time, energy, and attention.
09:40And, uh, and just continue to, uh, move forward.
09:44So, like I said, man, this, uh, helps me to stay focused.
09:47Because I know exactly what success looks like, man.
09:50Even with the podcast, these podcasts, there are episodes that's already six months ahead.
09:55So, um, six months ahead from now, I already have every episode ready for the next six months.
10:04I didn't just start.
10:04I know exactly what success looks like.
10:06I know exactly what I need to do for the day, uh, do for the week before the week even
10:10starts.
10:10So, talk point number three is I use a hybrid, uh, system to increase focus and reduce stress.
10:18So, I found out that the hybrid approach, which we just discussed, which is basically taking time blocking,
10:24taking that set amount of time, and, and adding, integrating, uh, task lists to make sure that you use that
10:31time more efficient
10:32and make sure that you can get the, uh, greatest, uh, level of result.
10:36Uh, that actually works better.
10:38So, the hybrid approach basically gets restructured without making my day feel rigid, and I believe it can do the
10:43same for you.
10:44So, time blocking protects my priorities from distractions, while task lists, make sure nothing important is forgotten.
10:51I'm going to say that again.
10:53I'm going to say that again.
10:57Time blocking protects my priorities from distractions, while task lists, make sure nothing important gets forgotten.
11:05So, make sure that you listen to that.
11:07So, if, if, if one block runs too long, simply adjust it.
11:11Just go ahead and adjust, uh, the next block instead of feeling like my entire day has failed.
11:16Because sometimes, some of those time blocks are going to run over, especially when you have, uh, uh, more, uh,
11:22heavier things that's on your task list.
11:24So, things that are more of a priority, and they take a little bit longer.
11:26So, don't, don't, you don't, you do not, you do not have to execute the day perfectly.
11:33What you have to do is, you, sometimes you can drag through, through the day, and as long as you
11:38made it through the day, you didn't stop.
11:40So, you do not have to execute everything on your task list perfectly every single day.
11:45What you have to do is just show up and do what you can.
11:48You know, some days, sometimes I'll be 200%.
11:50Some days, I'll be 120.
11:53You know, some days, I'll be 110.
11:54So, you know what I'm saying?
11:55So, some days, you know, but you still have to get up.
11:59You still have to show up.
12:00You know what I mean?
12:01There's plenty of times where I've missed, uh, I missed a couple, uh, things.
12:05I missed, uh, inventory rotation.
12:07I think a couple of days where we rotate, we rotate all the products within our online stores.
12:12We either add a product or, uh, I go through it, check the, uh, the data that was collected from
12:18the visitors of the store.
12:19I see what product got the least views and what people are not interested in.
12:23I remove their product and I'll rotate and enter in another product.
12:27That's probably one of the best or the hottest products I research, what products are hot products.
12:32And then I will put that on the store and take away the one that has the least views, the
12:36least clicks, or the least purchases.
12:38So, uh, but, you know, there's plenty of times I miss stock rotation and other things that I have to
12:44come back and I have to do later.
12:45That doesn't mean that, you know, the day is over because I didn't accomplish what I wanted to accomplish.
12:50I accomplished a lot in other areas and we'll try to, we'll add it tomorrow.
12:53You know what I mean?
12:54So, don't get overwhelmed when things do not go your way.
12:56They just continue to move forward.
12:58Uh, that is the name of the game.
13:00So, productivity, productivity, productivity isn't about doing more.
13:06It's about intentionally scheduling your time and giving every block a clear mission.
13:12Every, every, every hour of your time needs to have a clear mission.
13:15You know what I mean?
13:16It needs to have a clear mission of what you're trying to do or what you're trying to accomplish in
13:19a positive sense.
13:20You know, what you're trying to do and what you're trying to accomplish in a positive sense.
13:23You know, a lot of people, you know, a lot of individuals, entrepreneurs, you know, they don't get a lot
13:28done because they don't have any aim towards what they really want to accomplish.
13:35Like, you know, don't, don't tell me you want to, you want to start a business or a side, some
13:41type of side hustle or something that you want to do.
13:43But you, all of your time is going towards nothing that has to do with that.
13:48You know what I mean?
13:49All of your time is going towards nothing that has to do with that.
13:52So, yeah, you have to make sure that you schedule your time to accomplish what you're trying to accomplish.
13:56Yeah, no, no, no one is going to do it for you.
13:58Don't think that, that one day you're going to wake up or you're going to do some special ritual and
14:04then you're just going to be the richest man in the world.
14:06You're going to have all the money in the world, but if you do not, you do not take the
14:10time, you do not take the time to really understand finance and how to invest those finances.
14:17What's the, what's the use of you becoming a millionaire, a multimillionaire, if you don't even have to not have
14:23possessed the knowledge that's needed to make sure that the wealth continues to move to the next generation.
14:28You get, just say you get $5 million, instead of you, if you don't have to understand how to invest
14:35the money, how to pass it down to the next generation, how to create a trust.
14:39You're just going to blow all the money and then your kids that come after you, they'll probably, you blew
14:43all the money and now they're stuck with a, they're stuck with paying for your funeral when you had all
14:49the money.
14:49You know, and they, they didn't get anything, you know what I'm saying?
14:52So, you know what I mean?
14:53You really want to be educated, you know, educated, that helps the money come in fast and we are financially
14:58educated.
14:58You're financially literate.
15:00It helps you to really understand that you have more options with your money and you can make your money
15:04work for you.
15:05So, uh, man, this is the More Nervous Podcast.
15:08It's the place to make your money smile the most.
15:10We'll catch you guys back here at 6, 6 a.m. Saturday, 6 a.m. Standard Time.
15:15Peace.
