00:11722 Zach Jackson gonna join us on the show oh he's gonna be a lot of fun I'm sure also
00:16at 922
00:17Miles Simmons everybody from Pro Football Talk used to be working with the Rams I'll ask him
00:21about Jared Verse and the excitement there I'm sure I'm gonna be getting killed by some of the
00:24people on the internet as Joey did post a video of me say yeah maybe Jared Verse ends up being
00:29the
00:29best best pass rusher in the division by the end of the season I wouldn't say is currently but maybe
00:3817 weeks is a long year to amass a lot of sacks took mile 17 to get number 23
00:46I'm not gonna put an asterisk next to it just because he ain't here anymore I'll tell you that
00:49right now I told you I'd play this for you here we go this is uh this is Jim Schwartz
00:55the first of the
00:56former Cleveland people who came out of the woodwork yesterday to talk about Cleveland sports
01:00Jim Schwartz on the Ryan Ripken show breaking his silence Jim why'd you leave the Browns made a
01:08change at head coach they passed over me with all the success that we had and the ability that to
01:15develop players our best players had their best years and that was the decision they made they
01:20wanted to go with an offensive guy they chose Todd I'm fine with that they can make decisions that
01:25that they want to make they can't expect me to stay on board for that anybody that's in any business
01:31you get passed over for a promotion when you've done a really really good job in your job it's time
01:36to go Todd deserved his own guy a forced marriage isn't going to work in the NFL having command of
01:42the players and having command in the locker room all those things are extremely important I didn't feel
01:47like I could do my job after getting passed over for the head coaching job put me in a tough
01:52position
01:52hey we want you to listen to this guy but we didn't want to make him the head coach I
01:57made the decision
01:57to resign as a result we weren't one of the best defenses in three years we were the best defense
02:02in three years the decision they made that's their decision but to expect me to stay and to be me
02:09be
02:09on board for that that's just a tough situation and it wouldn't have been good for me and it wouldn't
02:13have been good for Todd so it was best for him to get his own guy in there as opposed
02:17to just having
02:18an arranged marriage and maybe having some players more loyal to me than him I'd never been around
02:24that before that all went into decision I wasn't upset about it I was disappointed about it my
02:29experience told me that wasn't going to be a situation that was going to work at Jim Schwartz
02:34on the Ryan Ripken show I have a lot of thoughts on it what's yours I think it kind of
02:38played out
02:39exactly like we had anticipated at the start of it this is before anybody knew what was going on I
02:46Jimmy Haslam was openly talking about you know Jim Schwartz and we weren't sure what the move
02:51was going to be from Jim Schwartz and this is the the same arrangement we always knew was never going
02:55to be feasible like they were never going to be able to work together not because he doesn't like
02:59Todd Munkin yeah but just because I think he basically said like if you if you want me and you
03:04want our defense back got him to hire me as a head coach you get you don't get me at
03:08all I think that
03:09was always the case and you know people were splitting camps on whether they thought that was
03:15juvenile whether that was being a being a poor sport on somebody that doesn't get the job
03:19but I think he probably said you either get me as the head coach like that was part of the
03:24part of
03:25the pitch like he was being seriously considered for the head coach and he said you either take me
03:31or I'm out and he thought that was his leverage and I think maybe the Browns called his bluff and
03:36he
03:36said no I got enough money I don't I can get hired again as defensive coordinator there's there's
03:40another part to it too like I I don't know what was in the agreement in that contract like what
03:46is
03:46what is a breach of contract could he be trying could he be trying to do a George Costanza over
03:51time like I wish they would have let him out of the contract because he would have just got a
03:55job
03:55with somebody else and he'd be quiet right he wouldn't be openly talking about because now I'm on
04:00alert can I explain something now I'm on alert because I already saw some of the stuff over the
04:04last couple days after the miles trade of well now just do we have to worry about Todd Munkin being
04:09a
04:09one-and-done guy like that Benjamin Albright guy said think of David Cully and well that's the
04:14exact that's the exact situation I'm trying to avoid I'm not just trying to hire guys for a one
04:20year thing and then just get rid of them and then find another guy yeah I get it that it
04:24worked with
04:24D'Amico Ryans I get that it's working right now but I don't want to go through that I don't
04:29think
04:29the Texans wanted they shouldn't have wanted to go through that that's part of the reason I like the
04:33Texans because it's just ass backwards they fall into things um I don't want to do that I want
04:37Todd Munkin to work for as long as he possibly can and if it comes to a natural end then
04:42it comes
04:42to a natural end I I hope the Browns are feeling the same way but as time goes on you
04:48don't think
04:48this team's going to be that great I don't think this team's going to be that great after miles is
04:52gone probably a five-win team which isn't great if they're a five-win football team and he keeps
04:58talking now all of a sudden we're answering to all this stuff and it's in the media because if he
05:02if
05:03Jim Schwartz just keeps saying because he doesn't care he's got more money than God that's why he's
05:08doing these interviews and maybe he is trying to get out of a contract even though the football
05:11season's about to start so it's not like he's going to go find another job but hell he could
05:15be looking Vrabel wise and just go well I could be on as a consultant somewhere if I really wanted
05:20to
05:20but I'm free to go and look around he's got nothing to lose when a man hasn't really nothing to
05:27lose
05:27he's old enough where he doesn't care about money that concerns me so Jim Schwartz wants to give an
05:31interview now and that's it fine but if you're the fans don't need him popping up in my life if
05:36the Browns are going through a struggling season yeah but if you're the fans after hearing that and
05:41this is exactly it's exactly what we had talked about you know the minute we knew that he wasn't
05:46going to be here we're like yeah I mean you wouldn't even want him here if he didn't if if
05:51he
05:51didn't feel you know comfortable with the arrangement yes so after hearing Jim Schwartz do you think fans
05:58are like screw that guy or fans like yeah actually that makes sense why would you want him here oh
06:03I
06:03do I think it makes sense I what his reasoning is like I'm not he's not even really ripping the
06:08organization he's explaining his his point I just don't want this to turn into some mess that every
06:13other week he's popping up on some show honestly he probably can't believe he didn't get the job I'm
06:18sure he can't I'm sure he can't believe he didn't get the job he's like I I was the one
06:22coach in town
06:23where everybody was proud of the work I was doing and this is how you repay me like you had
06:29a chance
06:30to hire me and these are egotistical proud men let's call it what it is and I'm sure he can't
06:34believe it uh I but what the way he described it I don't want to paint him out to be
06:39a villain I
06:40think it's natural I when when they selected Todd Munkin you can go back and check the tapes I said
06:45that's got to be we got to be done with Jim Schwartz you can't put these guys together you did
06:49the talent
06:50with the with the Bears the 85 Bears the talent was too good and they were somehow able to make
06:55that work a lot of these times this turns into an unmitigated disaster and you can't do that to
07:00this football team so I can't have the ghost of Jim Schwartz hanging around and I couldn't have Jim
07:05Schwartz around so I kind of wish they would have just let him out of his contract he could have
07:09been a coach somewhere else not to mention what would it have been like I know this is kind of
07:12attacking his his professionality on this which maybe is not fair because we don't know how he would
07:18have reacted probably isn't fair at all but we speculate it's what we do on the radio um can you
07:23imagine what it would have been like if they hired Todd Munkin and the offense is still dreadful and
07:28the defense is still awesome how do you think Jim Schwartz you don't think he's kind of walking around
07:33going hey you had a chance hire me and it just and now he's got to do a weekly press
07:38conference
07:38and it undermines the head coach I think Jim understands exactly what it would do and so I think Jim
07:43what Jim is telling you is the way it should work and I probably think he's probably he's got to
07:47be
07:48upset that he doesn't have a chance to coach anywhere right now because he's technically
07:51still under contract but let me ask you an unfair question right before do you think the clock is
07:56running on Todd Munkin I do yeah can you explain that to me in five minutes
08:00absolutely
08:00absolutely
