00:35Andrew Barry spoke on the Browns Radio Network before the game.
00:38Here's Andrew and all his conversation about this quarterback position.
00:44As we looked at the potential quarterback market, veteran, draft,
00:49and then just how we were positioned,
00:50we knew that there was some likelihood that we weren't going to make a significant,
00:54let's say, cash investment in the position
00:56or the opportunities to use a high pick at the position were going to be relatively limited.
01:02Secondly, we felt last year that the infrastructure was not conducive
01:07to that position playing consistent football.
01:10Quarterback certainly is the biggest driver of winning,
01:12but it's also the most interdependent position in sports.
01:15It's important to have the right environment around that player.
01:18And then the third piece of it is in the room right now, we have three really young guys.
01:22I think in the NFL, you see it time and time again that it is the longest developing position,
01:27and you want to make sure that they're in a healthy spot.
01:30But we understand that everyone wants to rush to judgment now, now, now, now, now.
01:35That's typically not how it works at the position.
01:37And we want to make sure just given how we were positioned
01:41and given what we thought would be available to us,
01:44our focus this offseason was really on the offensive infrastructure.
01:47And so it allows these guys to hopefully take a step
01:50and maximize the talent they do have
01:52and gives us a good honest assessment of how they'll play.
01:55Yeah, if you're any good, this would all sound good.
01:57But they're not any good, so it all sounds horrific
02:00because you're sitting there going, well, now, now, now, now, now.
02:02I don't know.
02:03Maybe you shouldn't have let the Charger bring in Deshaun Watson then.
02:05Maybe you should have let that simmer for a little bit longer.
02:07Maybe cooler heads should have prevailed back in 2021
02:10when you were also in charge.
02:12And you say it's one of the most interdependent positions out there.
02:15Well, who put the team around them together?
02:17I mean, I can only blame Paul DeBodesta for so much,
02:19or I can only scapegoat him for so much just because it's convenient for me.

02:26And if we say we can't do this, okay, then let's give you another seven years.

02:39We can't go spend a lot of money because we already have all this money
02:42spent to the guy that nobody wants to see and booze every time he goes out there.
02:45So they have that.
02:48That's 100% honest, definitely.
02:50But everything else, it's just like, well, where the hell was all this?
02:53They could – I mean, now, Kirk Cousins is only getting $13 million this year.

02:58It's because we all know what this year is about.

03:08And I'm even looking at it going, I knew what they were going to be

03:15and I'm not that good of an actor, and I'm not going to ham it up.
03:17Like, I can't – I find it very hard to believe I'm going to be
03:21firing brimstone in the month of October on a Monday.

03:26I mean, things happen in games where maybe I'm going to lose my mind,
03:30but I can't find myself red-faced, blowing facial blood vessels
03:34over this team in October.
03:36Certainly not by Thanksgiving.

03:39Like, I can't – I cannot – because if I do it, if I think that way,
03:45then I've talked myself into it every week.
03:47And I can't with this.
03:48Well, how many Browns fans were even – because there was great football.
03:52That was the torturous thing about it yesterday is I couldn't get off
03:57that game fast enough because the Bills game was amazing.
04:00The Bengals, you know, Baker game was amazing.
04:04The Saints game was amazing.
04:06They've got a young quarterback.
04:07You know, so all these other things were happening all by the buzzer,
04:12and it was like, what was the reason to stay dialed into the Browns game
04:16yesterday, especially when they kept bringing Deshaun out.
04:20You know, you were wondering, was there a chance that they were going to go
04:23to the backup?
04:24They were going to go to Shador.
04:25And he had the helmet on, too.
04:27So when Shador had the helmet on, I was like, all right, I kept peeking in.

04:53And offensively, you know, it looked pretty much like the Deshaun Watson

04:58In fact, I said I've seen him play way worse.
05:01So I wanted to see, like, hey, the receivers, but, you know,
05:05there wasn't going to be a chance because they weren't going to sustain
05:08drives.
05:09I guess I saw some good things out of KC with the exception of the fumble.
05:12Obviously, it was nice to see Boston get going.
05:15They couldn't really incorporate Harold Fannin into the offense,
05:17which surprised me.
05:19That's the one thing.
05:20If you've got a quarterback that can't throw the ball down the field,
05:22you should be able to at least hit a tight end for a safety valve situation.
05:27And they had no running game.
05:28And the offensive line, it was – it's what I expected an offensive line to look
05:32like when you have five new guys.
05:34There's something that Todd Munkin keeps saying that's bothering me.
05:36Daryl Ryder is going to join us at 822.
05:38I'm going to play that at 845.
05:40There's a reason for you to stick around that late because I'm going to tell
05:42you right now, there's something that just keeps bothering me and bothering
05:44me and bothering me, and I have to get it off my chest later on today.
05:47But I think that for a lot of folks, I mean, when you do hire an older head
05:53coach when he wasn't really a big prospect before this, and it's one game,
06:00I understand he has several chances.
06:02And my God, I hope that it's just all hot air by the end of it.
06:05But I think to a lot of fans, it just confirmed what they were thinking,
06:10that this season, I don't know what it's going to mean other than just getting
06:14to next offseason.
06:15And I don't want to put him in that David Culley category.
06:19It's insulting.
06:20It's insulting to the fans.
06:22But if I find out I have to by the end of the month or by the end of the
06:25year,
06:25I mean, we just have to face honesty here.
06:29And it's been so horrific to start things off.
06:32I know it can't get any worse.
06:33It's going to have to get better.

06:37I'm sitting here wondering what would another coach have been able to do

06:48Vegas does not think anything better about the Browns if Shador is starting.
06:51It's not about him as much as it is what he represents.
06:54Like, it's just a year to get to a year that you actually want to do well.

07:03That's what's so upsetting.
07:04Like, Houston is known as a good football team now.
07:07They had that year with David Culley where it was just like, you just exist.
07:10You open up the stadium.
07:12You bring people in.
07:13They watch the game.
07:15You're not good.
07:16They leave the game.
07:17That's the way it goes.
07:18And fewer and fewer people show up as the weeks go on.
07:20And then you move on from David Culley to somebody you actually want.
07:23Like, I don't want that to happen.
07:25But after I saw what I saw yesterday and we're already starting to go back on words
07:29and things don't look the way they used to, like, that's going to be upsetting for a Browns fan.
07:34And I just don't want to sit here and deny truth just because I like the guy.
07:38That's what I'm afraid.
07:39I'm nervous about that.
07:40Yeah, my thing is, though, like, the top of mind blame game yesterday,
07:45I didn't go to Munkin because I looked at the setup and I just think they're starting all young guys
07:55everywhere,
07:56a brand new offensive line, and Deshaun Watson.
08:00And then you lost Miles Garrett and Jim Schwartz.
08:02I dig.
08:02What coach is supposed to deal with that?
08:04I dig what you're laying down.
08:06I really do pick it up.
08:07I get that.
08:08And I think that they were wondering the same thing, and they went, well, you know,
08:11and probably Yudinski and Sheilhouse felt the same way that they did, going, well,
08:15you can't guarantee me any of this for the future, and we can't guarantee any of these guys coming out
08:21are going to be wonderful, which I will get to at 722 because it made me feel a little bit
08:25better
08:25even in a loss on Saturday night.
08:27So that is part of what concerns me here.
08:30I hate looking for new head coaches.
08:32I hate doing any of that stuff.
08:34And I don't want to do it again.
08:36I want the guy to have a chance, don't I?
