00:00Hi, I'm Rory Reid. Welcome to extra gear as always bringing you more brand new top gear exclusives tonight
00:06I talk f1 with uncle Eddie around the streets of Monaco and Chris Harris is waiting like a cold spring
00:12Ready to take something around our track. What have you got Chris?
00:15This is the car that was destroyed by the Vulcan in top gear
00:18We decided to take pity and give it another go around the top gear test track. That's nice of you
00:23and
00:24Comedians Ellis James and John Robbins are with us
00:30And I'll be showing you behind the scenes of my Tesla Model X film that thing's the future just like
00:36extra gear
00:45First things first I want to talk about this thing. I get look I was driving a family SUV and
00:51they give you a Vulcan
00:52What's going on? It's a matter of trust Rory. You'll get there. I promise you. All right, so we show
00:56me around man
00:57Let's just listen this up. Well first of all that alone that bonnet's worth more than your Model X look
01:01at that
01:01That's just carbon city. Tell me about that motor. Look where it's positioned. That's brilliant. It's quite it's quite far
01:06back
01:06It's like behind the front axle so that's front mid-engine for weight distribution look at that suspension there in
01:11boards
01:11I mean, it's artwork, isn't it? It's brilliant. You got some gold stuff down there as well. What's what's the
01:15gold about?
01:16Is that just blink? That's just anodized metal, isn't it?
01:18But it looks like gold and it's it's pornographic. It's carbon fiber. It's lovely bits. Why I think I've made
01:23a mistake with this
01:24Have a look at this guys. There's the suspension is kind of facing the wrong way. That's inboard suspension. It's
01:29pushrods
01:29It's like a Formula One car dude nice. It is beautiful. I love the way the wheels exposed as well
01:34on that
01:34It's awesome. It's gorgeous. One thing I don't like though, mate is the the exhaust
01:38Why why do they do that on racing cars?
01:40They put the exhaust right where you step out so you burn your leg because you have more pipe going
01:44out the back
01:44It's more weight make it shorter less weight. Stop being so miserable fair play fair play
01:50What are these lights about a aerodynamic?
01:53Why would you choose the one bit about the car that has nothing to do with aerodynamics everything else aerodynamics
01:57those they just look cool
01:58All right, cool. This wing it's like I know it's expensive, but is it does it got to be this
02:03big?
02:03Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa that will take
02:06350 kilograms of downforce at speed so you you could lie on it. I wouldn't suggest you do but you
02:10probably could all right cool
02:11So what are you driving this week? I am driving look at this
02:14A flat gray piece of beauty a V12 Vantage Aston Martin can't wait
02:25Now you're thinking this looks like a normal V8 Vantage, but it's not it's a V12 Vantage S and most
02:31importantly Aston Martin
02:32Thank you Aston Martin have fitted a seven-speed manual gearbox now to fit all those gears in
02:38They've had to do what they call a dog legs first. So that's a way and down away from you
02:43First gear which is a bit complicated because it means that second is where third should be and fourth is
02:47where I mean
02:48It's all the wrong way around
02:49We get used to pretty quickly that when you do well you have the delights of a six-litre
02:54Normally aspirated V12 engine with 563 horsepower and the thing that's doing that to the rear tires
03:02457 foot pounds of torque this car
03:05I think is an instant classic everyone wants manual transmissions at the moment because they're the best things to drive
03:10I love this car. It's only got a 295 rear tire so even in third gear look
03:16No speed at all. I'm just lighting the rears up and look at the balance. Feel the balance
03:22Special car. Really special car. Should you pay 139,000 pounds for one? Of course you should
03:30The first thing you should be doing with your 139,000 pounds
03:34How could you improve it? Well, you could make it have a little bit more traction
03:38But you couldn't make it much prettier could you because this shape is still one of the loveliest looking shapes
03:42on the marketplace
03:44And the gear shift well, I drove a development car a while ago
03:47I wasn't so sure about it, but right now. I think this is a really special car. Can you see
03:53how much fun I'm having?
03:54Look at the slide ability
03:56Yes, yes, yes
03:59I think he likes it a little bit of drool coming out of his mouth now
04:03I spent four days in New York for this week's Tesla film with the full top gear crew and enough
04:08kit to make a Hollywood blockbuster
04:10But they left me with a little tiny camcorder to film a video diary. Let's take a look
04:20Welcome to New York City
04:24This is Central Park
04:29Today I am testing the brand new Tesla Model X
04:36There she is
04:38Hello director John
04:40I'm busted
04:41What I'm trying to do is minimize the profile of the suckers on the window
04:46We're doing so much driving
04:48What I don't want to do is see these from the tracking car
04:51Yeah, we had a beautiful rig beautiful shorts set up, but you could see three big limpets and it's like
04:58Not ideal, not ideal
05:01Oh, oh, oh, I'm sorry
05:05Sorry, I've just ruined ruined exactly what you're doing there. My bad
05:09I just wanted to show how cool the doors were
05:12All right, I'm shutting it again
05:17Dan the cameraman
05:19Right, this is the tracking vehicle
05:20Yes
05:21What's going on in here?
05:22Put the camera in there
05:23This is the little monitor that I'll use
05:26To see because it's kind of uncomfortable to look at through the viewfinder
05:30So we have this monitor and you can sit in there
05:33It's more comfortable
05:34But you've got the hi-hat
05:36And you've got these connections here
05:39Keep it all sturdy
05:40So keep it all sturdy with the ratchet straps
05:42So the key point is to make this really
05:46Hang on
05:48You can go anywhere
06:04We are here at Warwick Airfield where we're going to do something pretty special
06:11We are going to do a quarter mile drag race to see what will win the tesla model x
06:19Or a Hellcat
06:23I know for a fact that this car has a secret weapon called ludicrous mode
06:29Big moment rory is now entering ludicrous mode
06:33To see what this baby can do
06:35Ludicrous mode is already engaged
06:36I'm looking forward to burning that thing off the line
06:39Well not burning, just efficiently destroying it
06:43I'm in launch mode, I'm in 700 horsepower
06:45I got a red key and I'm ready to rock
06:48Electrons baby, watch this
06:50Three, two, one!
07:04What were you saying?
07:05Hellcat who?
07:10This is lunch
07:13Pizza in the back of a Suburban
07:16Andrew, can we go? Tom, can we go?
07:19You ready? Cool, I'm ready.
07:22Are we going to make it happen? It's going to happen.
07:38We've made it, so we did our helicopter tracking
07:41because we couldn't really miss that slot of recording
07:44and then we had to hot foot it to a Tesla supercharger.
07:48We've got it all plugged in now, it's charging
07:50and this should give us around 80% of juice
07:52in about 30 minutes or so.
07:56So yeah, Tesla superchargers, the system works.
08:04I love the town, I love the people, but I love that car.
08:09Now, earlier on we saw Eddie enjoy a luxury train journey
08:12down to Venice, but I had the chance to meet him
08:14in the luxury of Monaco in a classic E-type.
08:29Mr. Jordan.
08:31That's me.
08:32Mr. Jordan, we are cruising around in this bright yellow Jaguar E-type.
08:37This is a hell of a way to get around Monaco, isn't it?
08:40What is this?
08:41This is a 1972?
08:4372, the last of the Mark IIs.
08:47It's a 4.2 and it was one of the last ones before the V12s came in
08:52and the V12s didn't quite gather up the excitement that the V8 did.
09:00Everyone knows you as a team boss, but what I didn't realise was
09:03you were actually a driver as well when you were, you know, a little bit younger.
09:06I never got into any kind of a competition car until I was into my 20s, 22, 23.
09:13Tried to go to Formula 3 and Formula 2 but didn't proceed because I wasn't good enough.
09:19Let's back up a second.
09:20I read a magazine interview where someone asked you who would be the fastest around the track
09:25and you reckon that you'd be quicker than me.
09:28And now you're telling me that you don't think you were good enough as a racer.
09:31But I don't think you're very good either.
09:33Are you serious?
09:34I think you're rubbish, personally.
09:36Trust me.
09:37I think you'd have a fight on your hands.
09:42So now we're rolling up to the start and finish line.
09:44Start and finish line.
09:45If ever there is the most important qualifying, it's always here.
09:49Always in Monaco.
09:51Because pole position is God.
09:53Do you know the cars that start at the back cannot see the lights?
09:57So they've got to go when they see the cars in front of them.
10:00They rely on other people.
10:01They have to rely on other people because there's no way of being able to get the signal back to
10:05them in time.
10:06So, right, you're sitting here.
10:07Your heart rate is sky high.
10:09You nail it.
10:10You get a decent start.
10:12What are you thinking?
10:13It's a very short run up to the first corner.
10:16This is Sandoval.
10:17So, as a team boss, I'd be saying, be clean through the first corner.
10:22You have to be sure that the wings stay on the car and you don't hit someone.
10:25You don't pick up a puncture.
10:29Rory, the thing about Monaco, the driver does not get a chance at any part of the lap to relax.
10:38Because there are corners coming so quickly.
10:42This is Casino Square, the Hotel de Paris.
10:45This is where you really, really need to be brave in a Formula One car.
10:49It's also a great place to go car spotting.
10:51I see McLarens, I see Ferraris and Astons.
10:59I would always say, never try to pass at the Fairmont corner, which used to be the Lowe's corner.
11:05And the reason is, just make sure you make your car as wide as possible so no one can dive
11:11up your inside or come around on your outside.
11:13Watch out, Eddie. Easy.
11:15Is the...
11:16Don't worry, you'll get white.
11:19I think we have the right of way anyway, Rory.
11:22Don't be giving my right of way away.
11:25So, now we're approaching the tunnel.
11:28So, the tunnel for me has always been a difficult place.
11:32It looks so easy on television.
11:34You're going through this at 180, 200 miles an hour.
11:38It is hard.
11:39You can't see the exit.
11:40Of course you can.
11:41And that is the problem.
11:43Mentally telling yourself to keep your foot absolutely buried in it.
11:47When the reality is, that you know anything goes wrong.
11:51And man, it's an almighty shot.
11:53Also, you've got natural light and then you've got the lights of the lights inside the tunnel.
11:58And this is where all of the people make mistakes.
12:03Especially towards the chicane here.
12:04I don't know why this is, but there is a movement in the ground here which drags you to the
12:09right-hand side.
12:09And you see so many cars, so many drivers being pulled into that guard rail.
12:18This is the back corner.
12:20And I think it's how you position the car here.
12:23You want to just have the car drifting.
12:25You naturally get a bit of oversteer here, so the back steps out ever so slightly.
12:31The all-important swimming pool.
12:34So fast.
12:35I think it's how the car enters the corner, balances, jumps on the brakes and then exits.
12:40Swimming pool, for me, is an awesome corner.
12:44So fast.
12:52Hey, he's an impersonator, how is that?
12:54We've got some company.
12:58I have to bear in mind.
12:59Ferraris are red.
13:00I like that red, actually.
13:01I like that red.
13:02I like that red.
13:03I think you're going to be walking home.
13:09Eddie, as we approach the start-finish straight, I think it's a great place to end.
13:13I really appreciate the fact you showed me around where you live, showed me a great car,
13:18and also how we should tackle this amazing circuit.
13:30Chris, what do you make of Monaco, honestly?
13:32You like it as a track?
13:33I like it as a track.
13:35Do you want my balance for you as a place?
13:36Yes.
13:36It's full of bad people doing bad things.
13:38It's a terrible place to drive.
13:40I'd get there, park the car, and use a moped.
13:42They all do that, actually.
13:43Eddie rides a bicycle pretty much everywhere.
13:45I like Monaco as a place, but not as a track, so we're kind of opposites on that.
13:48And you're wrong.
13:49Good.
13:50All right, let's talk news.
13:51Now, this made me stop and look.
13:53It's a Ferrari 458, but not as we know it.
13:56This was actually specially commissioned by someone to look slightly different to a normal
14:00Ferrari 458.
14:02Spot any differences there?
14:03Well, no, because obviously someone's gone to Marinello and said, can I have a Lotus Evora?
14:07Guys, can we have the Lotus Evora now, please?
14:10Oh, my goodness.
14:10So you spend several million quid, and you could have gone to Norfolk and just ordered one the same.
14:15Yeah, probably for a hundred grand or something ridiculous.
14:18I mean, look at the glass line.
14:19I would actually say, though, that's an improvement on the 458.
14:22That's a nicer-looking car.
14:24The Evora is a nicer-looking car than the 458.
14:26I've said it.
14:27We're gonna have to discuss that later.
14:29In fact, I can't compute that.
14:30Can we move on to the next news story?
14:32Well, I have a look at this.
14:33I know this is right up your street.
14:35It's basically a guy doing a prank in a Tesla.
14:37Let's just throw the clip.
14:39Where's the driver?
14:41Oh, there's no driver in that car.
14:43You in there?
14:46Nobody in the car.
14:49Dude, no joke.
14:51This is the future.
14:52There is nobody driving this Tesla on the interstate.
15:02Oh, hey, what's up?
15:05What?
15:07That's incredible.
15:08But it does raise the issue that autonomous cars are gonna be everywhere.
15:12It also exposes an interesting point about the relationship we have with cars.
15:15We expect someone to be operating them.
15:18Because there shouldn't be someone operating them.
15:19I don't get it.
15:20I have to say it terrifies me.
15:21If you were driving along and saw no one driving the car, scary.
15:25Yeah.
15:25Now, apparently driverless cars will be tested on UK roads as early as next year, starting
15:30on small local roads and building up to motorways.
15:33And a research company has shown us how things will evolve with this interesting picture.
15:38So the picture on the left, that's today, hands on the wheel.
15:41By 2018, they reckon that you'll be able to take your hands off the wheel, but only for three
15:45minutes at a time.
15:46By 2021, you can have your hands in your lap.
15:49And by 2025, you can fall asleep completely at the wheel, but only doing 30 miles an hour.
15:56It's complete bunkum.
15:57Nonsense.
15:58No.
15:59All right.
15:59Now, the next thing is the most exciting overtaking move I've seen in a long time.
16:03Watch the video and keep your eyes out for this overtake.
16:08The driver's minding his own business.
16:11Suddenly.
16:12Oh, yes.
16:14Oh, yes.
16:16Oh, my Lord.
16:18Well, I say I don't like Monaco, but it would be more exciting in F1 if you could overtake
16:23like that.
16:23Can we play that back in slow motion again?
16:28How did he hold on to that?
16:30He should buy a lottery ticket immediately and go and meet the girl of his dreams, because
16:34how no one died in that, I don't know.
16:37Have you ever pulled a move like that?
16:39Never.
16:39And if I had, I'd boast about it for the rest of my life.
16:41It's the best overtake ever.
16:43All right.
16:44Well, let's get our guests out.
16:45Give it up for Ellis James and John Robbins.
16:49How are you?
16:50How are you?
16:51Good, guys.
16:52Good.
16:57Now, you guys perform as a double act.
17:00Well, we have a radio show together.
17:02Okay.
17:03Every Saturday afternoon on Radio X, and then we're going on tour this autumn of the two
17:07of us, because, yeah, it's the double act everyone wants to see, mate.
17:13Chris, you must have raced with partners.
17:15What's it like dealing with other people when you're in a car with them?
17:18Do you have to get on?
17:18I think it's the two-man dynamic, and it's kind of a very important thing, isn't it?
17:21And it's crucial.
17:22So I'm judging with you two.
17:24Are you the more dominant driver, John, or not?
17:27I would say we're both incredibly efficient drivers, because the thing is, when you're
17:33a kid, you know, you fantasize about the sort of cars you want, and then you get to 18,
17:39and you have to pay for petrol, and suddenly your sort of dream car rockets down to sort
17:44of the 1.4 diesel range.
17:47It's very difficult to get third-party fine and theft on a McLaren F1.
17:52We once drove back from a gig in Matlock to London, and Ellis' girlfriend had just learnt
17:58to drive, and it was in Ellis' golf, and he found that scenario so stressful that I had
18:05to sit in the passenger seat to sort of talk her through the journey home.
18:08Yeah.
18:08So you've got a golf right now.
18:10Big time, mate.
18:11Okay.
18:11That was a decent choice.
18:12Absolutely passionate about my Volkswagen Golf.
18:14There it is.
18:14Is that the beast?
18:15Yeah.
18:16Covered in devilish tree.
18:17Every time we have a guest on this show, it's covered in filth.
18:20Yeah.
18:21I must ask you, though.
18:22So you've got this.
18:22What's your dream car?
18:24A Volkswagen Passat Blue Motion.
18:26Sorry.
18:27Sorry.
18:28What I would give for a Volkswagen Passat Blue Motion, because it's funky.
18:32It's efficient.
18:33You're going to look great doing the school run.
18:35Oh, look at that.
18:36And the estate.
18:37You know that scene there, they just put the exhaust on, and suddenly that cloud cover
18:43just forms.
18:44That is extraordinary.
18:46So who's your dream woman?
18:47Anne Widdicombe?
18:48I don't know.
18:50She's defiant.
18:51How do you set the bar of aspirations so low in your life?
18:54What happened to you?
18:54Was there an event we don't know about?
18:55It's called sort of achievable ambition.
18:59If that was a Skoda Octavia, it would be within touching distance.
19:04You've been laughing, John.
19:05What's your car?
19:06What do you drive?
19:06A Skoda Fabia 1.4 diesel.
19:09Right.
19:11Holding the moral high ground there.
19:13It's an O4 plate, which amongst Fabia enthusiasts is seen as the golden era of the fab.
19:19It does a smooth 64 to the gallon extra urban.
19:23I feel my life ebbing away here.
19:24I really can.
19:25Can I just ask?
19:26Do you guys leave the real-time MPG thing on the computer and monitor it the whole time?
19:31Absolutely.
19:32Of course, yeah.
19:32You've got to remember, when you're a stand-up comic, you could be doing 25,000, 30,000 miles a
19:37year.
19:37I've done 300,000 miles just driving for comedy stand-up around the country.
19:42And at that level, the difference between 50 and 52 miles per gallon, that could be as much as 40
19:48pounds.
19:51I can actually hear the adenoids in your voice now.
19:54So, how far does it go?
19:55Do you draft trucks to get in the slipstream?
19:57Keep it light.
19:59Red diesel would be illegal.
20:02I'm from a rural area.
20:03Never overtake uphill.
20:04Never brake.
20:05Always foot off.
20:07Yeah.
20:07What about tyre pressures and tyre treads?
20:09Obviously, if you get tyre pressures up, you're going to get a better MPG.
20:11Like any normal person, you check your tyre pressures on a daily basis.
20:15Yeah.
20:15I like that.
20:16And often, the shortest route is not the most economical.
20:19This guy.
20:21So, you seem to have an obsession with economy.
20:24Have you got a favourite motorway services?
20:26I've got a top three, mate.
20:28Yeah?
20:28T-Bay Northbound.
20:29Oh, yeah.
20:30T-Bay Southbound.
20:31Gloucester Gate.
20:32Gloucester Gate.
20:33I'll give you that one.
20:34Organic everything.
20:34They're all run by the same company.
20:35Why?
20:36What's so special about those?
20:38Because they are the only independent motorway services in the country.
20:42You can buy organic beer.
20:43Why should you be able to buy organic beer at the service station?
20:45Yes, that is a good one.
20:46Their range of beer at Gloucester Gate is insane.
20:49I went there and I was so excited, I recorded my reaction on my phone,
20:53which made it to the local paper, the Gloucester Echo,
20:57and their headline was,
20:59DJ like services.
21:03Ellis, this is your history of cars, okay?
21:05It's listed here.
21:06You had a Ford Fiesta Kingfisher,
21:08and I've described it as always smelling of Scotched egg.
21:11Yeah.
21:11Please elaborate.
21:12Rainwater would come in,
21:13and then when rainwater dries in a car,
21:15it smells of Scotch egg.
21:17But it was a 1991 Ford Fiesta Kingfisher,
21:20shared it with my mum.
21:22It was known by my friends as the Scotch Edmobile.
21:26It says you also had a Vauxhall Nova in 1991,
21:30and a Ford Fiesta diesel,
21:32and the notes are nicked in Cardiff next to both of these.
21:35Is that where you acquired the vehicles?
21:37Yes.
21:37By stealing them?
21:38No, no, I used to live in quite a rough part of Cardiff,
21:40so the Kingfisher wallop's gone.
21:43The Vauxhall Nova, bang, it's been pinched.
21:45We're starting to see a picture of why he doesn't like nice cars now,
21:47because they're just getting nicked.
21:48Because, yeah, I had like a framed picture of a Ferrari F40s,
21:51a little sort of kid when I was 10.
21:53But then once you've got to actually get places and insure them,
21:57your ambitions become far more achievable.
21:59When I was a kid, I had posters of the McLaren F1,
22:03I had the TVR Griffith,
22:06but my dream car was actually a Sierra RS Cosworth.
22:10Nice.
22:11Oh, hello.
22:12Look at that.
22:13Look at that.
22:14Look at that.
22:14And I remember vividly, as a 13-year-old,
22:18Performance Car Magazine voted for their top 10 cars of the 80s,
22:22and that got beaten by the Peugeot 205 by one point,
22:27and I was livid.
22:28My PE teacher had one,
22:30so it was sort of within your world, whereas...
22:33A PE teacher?
22:34What was he doing?
22:34Selling cocaine at work?
22:40Really?
22:41On that note...
22:42Yeah.
22:43I think it's time to end.
22:44That's it for us.
22:45Big thanks to Ellis James and John Robbins.
22:48Chris and I will be back next week with more Top Gear exclusives.
22:51Thank you and good night.
