03 May - National Afternoon forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst
Transcript
00:00Hello there and welcome to your Met Office afternoon forecast and there's a change on the way over the next
00:07week.
00:08We've had quite a few weeks of warm, dry, settled weather over the weekend.
00:11It's changed and then through the week ahead we see more of a northerly airflow across the UK
00:17and it will bring temperatures down, particularly in the north, below average,
00:21and increasing the risk of some snow over the Scottish mountains as well.
00:25But for Sunday afternoon there'll be a lot of cloud across the UK, some bright or sunny spells at times,
00:32but also some areas of rain, one in particular across north and eastern parts of England here.
00:38It's quite persistent with a cool northeasterly breeze, another area of sherry rain close to parts of southwest England and
00:45Wales as well.
00:46But in between some bright spells developing, one or two showers,
00:50and then if we zoom into southern parts of England and Wales as we move through the afternoon,
00:55the increasing risk of some heavy showers and thunderstorms developing,
00:59particularly parts of north Devon, south Wales, across the M4 towards London as well.
01:06One or two of these showers could be on the thundery side as well and may just cause one or
01:10two problems.
01:11But elsewhere, generally staying rather cloudy and temperatures a little disappointing in the north,
01:18particularly northern Scotland, single-figure temperatures here.
01:21But towards any brighter spells, 15 degrees across parts of Northern Ireland and northwest England,
01:27northeast England struggling to reach 10 or 11 degrees with that cloud and breeze coming off the North Sea.
01:33But in the south, in the sunshine, feeling quite humid, 17 to 20 degrees,
01:38and that could trigger those thundery showers,
01:40which could continue through into the evening time across southern parts of England and Wales.
01:45The shattery rain across northeast England should start to ease as we head overnight
01:49and another band of rain moving in across the far north of Scotland.
01:54The wind's just increasing a little here.
01:56But overall, a lot of cloud tonight, some mist, some hill fog and drizzle in places,
02:01and this will keep temperatures up for most towns and cities between 7 and 10 degrees.
02:06Some colder air across northern Scotland could see under any clear spells here a touch of frost in the countryside.
02:12But it does mean some sunny spells first thing across parts of Scotland,
02:16though blusty showers across parts of Orkney and Shetland, some longer spells of rain here too.
02:21Elsewhere, a lot of cloud through Bank Holiday Monday,
02:24but there'll be some brighter sunny spells that develop at times,
02:27and again across southern parts of England and Wales where the sunshine breaks through,
02:32the clouds will bubble up, and we could see some heavy showers developing,
02:36some thunderstorms as well.
02:38So it could make some tricky travelling conditions as we move through the day here.
02:42Temperatures around 18 or 19 degrees elsewhere.
02:46The mid-teens for most of us, so feeling warmer across northern parts of England
02:50where it has been chilly today.
02:51But some cold air across Shetland here.
02:54Maximum temperatures around 5 or 6 degrees.
02:57As we move through into the evening time,
03:00showers should slowly start to ease across the southern half of England and Wales,
03:05but become a bit more widespread across parts of Scotland,
03:08and the colder air here starting to filter a little further south.
03:13And then looking at the picture as we go through the rest of the week,
03:16that northerly airstream increasing the risk of some wintry showers across parts of Scotland.
03:21A mixed picture for most of us.
03:23Weather systems nearby giving the risk of some rain at times,
03:26but there will be spells of sunshine there too.
