17 May - National Morning Forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst
Transcript
00:00Hello, good morning and welcome to your latest forecast from the Met Office.
00:05It's going to remain changeable over the next few days.
00:08The good news is we've lost that cold Arctic northerly air,
00:11but we've replaced it with a westerly airstream.
00:15So this will bring weather systems in from the Atlantic showers,
00:18some longer spells of rain, and then Monday night into Tuesday,
00:21some stronger winds as well.
00:23But the good news after that is that high pressure starts to build in
00:27from the middle of next week onwards.
00:29Winds turn southerly and those temperatures start to rise.
00:33So for today, we've got a mixture of sunny spells and showers across the country,
00:37showers most frequent across the western half of the UK.
00:41Some of these will be heavy at times, the risk of some hail and thunder,
00:44perhaps some gusty winds as well for Northern Ireland and Southwest Scotland.
00:48Some longer spells of rain possible for Orkney and Shetland.
00:52But in between today, there will be some spells of sunshine,
00:56some lengthy spells of sunshine across parts of Wales, the Midlands,
00:59into parts of Yorkshire as well.
01:00East Anglia perhaps seeing some hazy spells of sunshine,
01:03but also the risk of some showers here too.
01:06And with the winds coming in from the west and southwest,
01:09just lifting temperatures a little higher than recent days.
01:1113, 14 Celsius for Scotland, Northern Ireland,
01:1515 to 18 Celsius for England and Wales.
01:18A little fresh in the west where the showers are most frequent.
01:20And then into the evening time, those frequent heavy showers will expand their way across the whole of the UK,
01:27merging during the early hours to give some longer spells of heavy rain for parts of England and Wales.
01:33Some colder air digging back in across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland overnight.
01:37So a touch of frost possible here in the countryside.
01:41But over England and Wales, enough cloud cover and rain to keep temperatures up around 6 or 7 Celsius.
01:48So a mixed start to Monday here.
01:50Spells of showery rain pushing eastwards across the country.
01:54Brighter chilly start for Northern Ireland and Scotland.
01:57But the cloud increasing here as we move through the day.
02:00Some showers for Scotland.
02:01Showers also breaking out in the warm spells of sunshine for Eastern England and Southern England.
02:07Some of these could be on the heavy side.
02:09And the next weather system approaching the far west,
02:12bringing some stronger winds and rain for later on in the afternoon and evening.
02:17Temperatures in the sunshine, 16, 17 Celsius, possibly locally 18 across Southern England.
02:23And the mid-teens further north, just still chilly across Northern Scotland, around 11 to 13 Celsius.
02:29Into the evening time, that rain spreads across the rest of the UK, increasing winds for a time too.
02:35That will slowly clear through Tuesday morning to leave then a blustery day of sunshine and showers.
02:41But from Wednesday onwards, high pressure starts to build in, reduces the amount of showers,
02:46increases the amount of sunshine and southerly winds bring some warmer air too.
02:50And temperatures lifting towards the mid-twenties come Thursday,
02:54perhaps a little higher by Friday into the bank holiday weekend as well.
02:59More to come on that over the coming days.
03:03See you again soon.
