16 March - National afternoon forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hello.
00:01Many places can look forward to some warm spring sunshine later this week, but that's
00:06not so much the case through Monday.
00:08We have a lot of cloud arriving, thickening from the west as a warm front moves in and
00:14crosses the country.
00:15And it's across the west, more especially the north-west of the UK, where we'll see
00:18the most persistent and heaviest rain associated with this warm front.
00:22So Western England, much of the north and west of Wales, Northern Ireland seeing a damp
00:26afternoon, but the heaviest rain, Western Scotland and then into central Scotland as the warm
00:32front moves through.
00:33Either way, it's cloudy for many parts of the UK.
00:36Brightest skies in the far south-east, clinging on to some sunny spells, and for Shetland as
00:41well, one or two showers here.
00:43But otherwise, largely cloudy skies, a keen breeze that is strengthening through the day, but
00:49it's coming from a mild direction, so it's going to give temperatures widely in the double
00:54figures, 12 or 13 Celsius, the highs towards the south and south-west.
00:59Some spots of rain in the south, especially over western hills, but the more persistent
01:04rain continues to move across Scotland, moving through Orkney and Shetland overnight and then
01:11becoming more confined to the far north-west.
01:13In the north-west, it's going to become increasingly windy with coastal gales developing by the early
01:20part of Tuesday.
01:21And with this strong south-westerly wind not only stirring the air up, but importing mild
01:26air from the south-west, it is going to be a cloudy but mild start to Tuesday, so generally
01:32frost-free.
01:33A lot of cloud cover, however, and that cloud thick and low covering western and northern
01:37hills continuing to give some spots of rain and drizzle.
01:40But actually, for many places, it is a drier start to Tuesday.
01:44Even a brighter start, increasingly across parts of England and Wales, the cloud becoming
01:49more broken as we go through the morning and afternoon.
01:53Pretty large gaps in the cloud developing by later in the afternoon across England and
01:57Wales.
01:58Plenty of sunshine as the wind switch to more of a southerly direction.
02:02But it stays cloudy for Scotland and Northern Ireland, windy as well, and we've got further
02:08spells of rain moving in, increasingly heavy.
02:10So not great for St. Patrick's Day, but that unsettled weather courtesy of a weather front
02:17that is pushing into the north-west and lingering throughout Tuesday.
02:21Stark contrast to parts of the Midlands, the east and south-east of England, where, with
02:27the increasingly sunny skies, it will feel fairly warm, 14-15 Celsius.
02:32Not quite as warm as it's going to get on Wednesday, however, nor quite as sunny.
02:37Because this front across Scotland and Northern Ireland is going to gradually sink south-east
02:43and weaken as high pressure builds towards the south-east.
02:47And by the time we get to Wednesday, that high, and a slight change in wind direction
02:52to more of a south-easterly will bring plenty of sunny skies across the southern half of
02:57the UK.
02:57Brighter skies for Scotland and Northern Ireland increasingly as well, although the weak weather
03:02front is trapped at this stage across Northern Ireland and Southern Scotland, continuing to
03:06bring thicker clouds and spots of rain.
03:09But you can see how it is generally drier elsewhere, with plenty of sunshine and in that warm wind,
03:1618 Celsius generally across parts of England and Wales, but in some spots 19 or even 20 Celsius
03:24is possible.
03:25Very pleasant afternoon indeed in the warmer spring sunshine.
03:29And more of that to come into Thursday, a decent spell of sunshine coming up later this week.
03:36We've just got the cloud and those outbreaks of rain on Monday and Tuesday.
