12 March - National afternoon forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there. A wet and windy March day expected this Thursday, the 12th of March, as an active
00:07weather front crosses the UK from north-west to south-east. The Atlantic winds are fully
00:13in control at the moment. Low pressure near Iceland, this brisk west-to-southwesterly
00:18airflow. And here's the weather front as we begin the afternoon. Clearing Northern Ireland,
00:23but sticking around for a time across southern Scotland and northern England, pushing into
00:27north and west Wales as an active spell of heavy rain and gusty winds. Winds typically
00:34through southern Scotland and northern England, north Wales, low 50s miles an hour for some
00:40exposed spots, we're thinking mid to high 60s. And so wind warning in force, some disruption
00:47is likely. The winds also picking up across the south and south-east as the afternoon wears
00:52on, cloud thickening, outbreaks of rain on and off for many areas.
00:56Further north, Scotland and Northern Ireland turn brighter as the front clears through but
01:01with frequent showers following and temperatures dropping away, colder air returning and that
01:07means there'll be some sleet and snow in those showers over the hills of Scotland.
01:13Now overnight, here's the wet and windy weather. It pushes into the Midlands, parts of Wales
01:17and the south-west. Tricky conditions on the roads, I imagine, during the evening rush hour
01:21and then by the end of the night that's clearing the south-east of England. So several hours of wet
01:25and windy weather clearing through, some broken cloud following and frequent showers, especially
01:32for Scotland and Northern Ireland but those showers reaching Western England and Wales by
01:35dawn as well. A lively night with gusty winds, of course that means it's generally frost-free
01:41but with the colder air in place we're going to be seeing seat and snow showers certainly
01:45over the hills of Scotland and Northern Ireland and perhaps down to lower levels in places as
01:50well. And as a result there is a snow and ice warning in force for parts of central Scotland.
01:54That's where the highest risk of disruption is but there could be snow in other parts of Scotland
01:58and Northern Ireland by dawn as well. Like I say, most likely over hills and for central Scotland
02:0410 centimetres above 350 metres that could cause disruption. Apache centimetre or two possible
02:10at lower levels as well. Then the cold air lifts slightly through the day so snow more confined
02:16to hills by the afternoon. And frequent showers certainly with a mix of rain, seat and hail
02:22at lower levels, snow over hills and that extends into Northern England, much of Western England
02:27and Wales by the afternoon. Showers also pushing into the Midlands as well as the south-east but
02:32fewer here. Better chance of some sunny spells. However, it is going to feel colder across all parts
02:38compared with the last couple of days. Temperatures staying mostly below 10 Celsius and in some
02:43spots lingering around the mid-single figures at best. Colder than that over northern hills
02:48of course, especially where we've got snow cover. Brisk winds continuing and that wind
02:53will feel cold. That's switching to a north-westerly direction but easing a little on Friday night.
02:59The showers becoming fewer and further between also on Friday night, more confined to the north-west.
03:04So a drier start to Saturday with some bright weather, albeit with a cold feel and some icy patches
03:11in places. Much more as ever on our YouTube channel. Subscribe so you never miss an update. Bye-bye.
